Re: Shigeru Miyamoto Wants Nintendo To Be As Big As Disney, But Concerned Parents Are Making It Difficult

@k8sMum

Don't worry, I didn't think you were trying to get sympathy or anything and I appreciated your thoughts it's just stories like yours tend to make me feel empathetic so that was what I ended up focusing on.

You are right though, nothing wrong with playing games in public, people shouldn't judge others for it, and my wife and I should feel free to do it if want whether we are judged or not.

Thanks again and take care!☺️

Re: Shigeru Miyamoto Wants Nintendo To Be As Big As Disney, But Concerned Parents Are Making It Difficult

gokev13

@Dodger
Yes, there are reasons for parents to limit video games or even not want them in the house. When my son first got interested in video games he learned pretty quick that if he was throwing tantrums when losing or when it was time to turn it off that he wouldn't be playing again for awhile. Through that he managed to learn how to manage those strong feelings in better ways rather than lashing out at everyone around him.

One of my friends had to keep packing up his console and putting it away for awhile because he said every time his kids were allowed to play video games tempers flared and tantrums happened even when the kids had ample warnings that if there were problems the games would go away again.

Not sure if it was the video games themselves or the competitive nature of the games that seemed to bring out the worst in his kids but when playing sports the same kids seemed to have similar problems.

My son was playing Mario with his cousins recently and told me after that it was horrible because if they all died the cousins would get more and more angry at each other.

One positive influence video games taught me in life was how to handle difficult and frustrating situations with more patience. In my opinion if a video game is going to make you lose your cool you will probably have difficulty keeing it when it actually matters.

@Wavey84 @k8sMum
It is not just mom's but perhaps mom's get a bad rap because so often they are the ones doing the majority of the kid raising. Unfortunately, I can think of a number of sets of parents in my life where the mom has to constantly lay down the law but if the Dad is in charge it's more of an anything goes attitude. That being said I also know situations where it is opposite.

I have met a number of people who have a bad attitude towards video games and I really can't lump them into a group because there have been Mom's, Dad's, old, young, farmers, Urbanites, Religious and Atheists.

One friend of mine told me that they would never have a gaming system in her house. She told me she was watching her younger cousins at the time sit and play a Mario game they got for Christmas and in her words they were staring at the TV like zombies all afternoon. Her husband liked video games though but he submitted to his wife and went with it. After many years her attitude has obviously changed especially since recently she told me how nice it is that her husband and son can bond so well together playing a Mario game. Yes, and interestingly enough she was the one who started to bring video games into the house. She bought her husband a Wii (they had one before I even did) because she liked the active elements it brought to the table. Last year her husband asked me for information about the Switch because his wife asked him if they should get one. I don't think she plays much herself but I was impressed in how see slowly warmed up to them, even using them to educate her kids and stuff like that.

I do find that a lot of people I talk to who don't seem to like video games are ignorant of the wide range of experiences that video games can offer.

I am sorry for your loss K8sMum. I wish you all the best in your future!

Edit: Thanks for your comments though Wavey84. You are right that there can be such a double standard between what is okay and what isn't. My wife once complained that she wished she could bring the 3ds to a Doctor's appointment that she knew she was going to be waiting for awhile. When I asked her why she couldn't she told me that people judge a grown woman playing a 3ds in public differently than one just looking at her phone. I kind of get what she means, though, even though I have played video games in waiting rooms I usually just bring a book. Maybe the stigma is imagined but apparently both my wife and I feel judged when playing games in public.

Re: Shigeru Miyamoto Wants Nintendo To Be As Big As Disney, But Concerned Parents Are Making It Difficult

gokev13

As someone who has loved video games his whole life, I have to say that some attitudes towards gaming is strange to me. Here are some of my observances:

The idea that gaming is a waste of time is an opinion, not a fact. So much of what we as humans do can be viewed as a waste of time. For example, is learning to play the piano a more valuable activity than playing video games? Most parents I've talked to would rather have their kids practice piano for an hour than play video games for the same amount of time. Learning piano makes beautiful music, they can share their art with others, it grows their mind and so forth. That is true but if the piano player only plays songs others composed, hates playing in songs in front of people but they love playing the piano as a means of relaxing and recharging after a long day, mastering a song and then finding a new song to master. Sounds a lot like my gaming hobby. I see nothing wrong with the piano player in my example because the activity is enjoyed and helps bring them life after giving in so many other ways through the day. In the same way I wish my hobby wouldn't be looked at as a waste of time.

When video games get in the way of other things that are important than yes I see that as a problem but I believe this isn't a problem with video games themselves as anything can seem to get in the way of what's important. Working hard or spending a lot of time with friends is great, but not if you have a family at home that feels neglected. I have seen a lot of things tear families apart, I can't think of case I've seen that had video games at the root but I'm sure it probably happens.

When it comes down to it no matter what we do someone might come along and tell us we are wasting our time. Playing video games? Waste of time! Working hard to amass a ton of money? Waste of time? Being a stay at home parent? Waste of time! Being involved in a religion? Waste of time! I could go on and on, and I don't think any of these things are necessarily a waste of time but I have heard them all talked about as being such. I know someone who spends a lot of money and time on video games and related stuff and people look at that and think it is such a waste, and they could be right, that money and time could be used for all sorts of other things. What people who don't know this person always account for (mostly because they don't even know) is how much more money they give away to more noble purposes, how much time they actually spend volunteering, most of which is behind the scenes and you wouldn't even know it if you didn't look for it. Sure this person could give more money and time to these things if they didn't like video games, but their family is well cared for, the work they do is done well, if there family or friends need something they can count on them for help. So who cares if they play video games to unwind? You can tell a cook that they could feed more people if they didn't waste food and cooking times to feed themselves but that's ridiculous because we know if the cook doesn't feed themselves they will soon collapse and no one will get fed. If we don't spend time on activities that we enjoy and refresh us we will burn out.

I know someone else who spent their teen years under pressure to do their best at everything. They were well respected in the community for their intelligence, athletic ability, musical ability, as well as their personality among other things. She felt a lot of pressure to become a doctor or some other important profession but before becoming and adult the pressure broke her and she became severely depressed. She eventually had to learn more about herself and what she needed to do for herself on order to also serve others because a lot of what she did before was based on what she thought others expected of her. On the other side of depression she is an excellent, wife, mother and teacher now and she also knows the importance of recharging her batteries which sometimes now includes wasting her time playing video games.

I know I am often long winded on here so I am going to conclude but I could go on and on about this topic. In conclusion, video games are among the various activities that can make life more enjoyable. Love them or leave them.

Re: Anniversary: Feel Old Everyone, Donkey Kong Country Turns 25 Today

gokev13

So many memories with this great game. Anniversaries like this would be a perfect time to add the DKC games to SNES online and now that Nintendo isn't following a consistent release schedule they can do it right?

Maybe the announcement got delayed for some reason. It's okay Nintendo I can wait till the end of the day for these games.

Re: Deals: Get A Year Of Switch Online Family Membership For Under £25

gokev13

I have good download speeds but terrible upload speeds. Splatoon and Smash seem to work fine, Smash as long as it is only one on one anyways.

Mario Party and Super Mario Maker 2 lag terribly at my house but when visiting family that have higher upload speeds Mario Maker 2 multiplayer seems to work just fine for me.

Re: Deals: Get A Year Of Switch Online Family Membership For Under £25

gokev13

@Amrulez
I would love an actual confirmation to this, where did you hear it? All I have head is they aren't releasing games on a monthly schedule anymore. At first some people were being optimistic and thinking perhaps that would just mean that new games could just come whenever so maybe one in October but then 2 the first week of November and one more the last week of November etc. November is coming to a close and I have not heard or seen anything about what the plans are with the NES and SNES online since early September.

I would be happy if bigger batches were released at a time but without any confirmation as to what they are planning I am worried that having 3 new games every 6 months is just as likely a scenario.

Re: Pokémon Sword And Shield Is Japan's Fastest-Selling Switch Game

gokev13

I am glad it is doing well but I just cannot get into Pokemon anymore. I was super addicted when Red and Blue first came out and part of my would love to dive in again but I just cannot seem to get into it. Seems like Sword and Shield did some things right and some things wrong but it is Pokemon on the Switch so no surprise it is selling well.

When I played Xenoblade Chronicles on the Wii I remember thinking at some point that Pokemon would do well to reinvent itself into a similar system to Xenoblade Chronicles. The wild zone seems to be a step in that direction, and people seem to really enjoy the wild zone. I would love to see a Pokemon game with a more active battle system though, you control the trainer, your positioning sometimes affects how well your pokemon's moves work. The Pokemon auto attack but your positioning and timing of shouting out commands for special moves effects how effective the move is. Battles with other trainers are more straight forward and follow rules but fighting wild Pokemon and "the bad guys" are more of a fight for survival, as the trainer can take damage if up against a particularly aggressive Pokemon or bad guy but you can release more of your Pokemon at once in these cases because all rules are off.

You know, stuff like that. I really want a Pokemon game like this now!

Re: Nintendo Will "Continue To Enhance" Switch Online Content, To Encourage More Users To Try The Service

gokev13

@Dirty0814
Don't get me wrong, as of now the service is worth it for me as well. I played through each and every one of the NES games and my playtime was getting close to 200 hours by the time I was finished. I enjoyed finishing games I finished many times before and I discovered enjoyable games I have never had the privilege of playing. I also got a kick out of some of the more terrible ones that weren't great but still good for a laugh and thanks to save states/ rewind I didn't have to beat my head against the wall in frustration to get through the more terrible ones.

I get some of them are very replayable but I most likely will not want to replay most of them during the Switch's lifetime. For me the sweet spot was a couple of new ones a month. I would be fine of we got a few more by the end of the year but if all of the sudden we are only getting like a couple every 6 months or so then I feel that is to slow. Of course we may have a better idea how this will work in the next few months. It could be that Nintendo is planning on stopping more games at strategic times throughout the year, say during Nintendo Directs or something. "Take a look at this highlight real of 10 new games coming to NES/SNES online available now!" or something like that.

Re: Nintendo Will "Continue To Enhance" Switch Online Content, To Encourage More Users To Try The Service

gokev13

@Tandy255
I guess we will see what happens. I was fine with the rate things were being released on NES online even if others thought it was slow. For me few games a month was perfect since I played through each and every one of them, and finished all of them in August before the SNES games were dropped.

I'm still waiting for Startropics II, games from the Mother series, Super Mario RPG, The Donkey Kong Country games and more. There is a while ton of games I would be excited to see but I am not holding my breath for because of licensing such as the TMNT games. Plus I was hoping for Castlevania and Mega Man games but those are very unlikely as well since they have been released in collections recently. Everytime a collection is released I die a little inside because I know it won't be on the online service and I also know I probably won't buy it even though I want to play the games. There are just to many games vying for my time and money for me to spend on the collections but if they were released on the subscription service I would eventually play them because it is just so convenient.

Re: Nintendo Will "Continue To Enhance" Switch Online Content, To Encourage More Users To Try The Service

gokev13

@Dirty0814
I'm sure that games will get added as well, I am just concerned. Like I said, I will be playing the SNES games for awhile, but if I finish all of them before any new games get added, that's a red flag for me. If nothing get added for the rest of the year that's also a red flag. I'm happy to pay the fees for the old games alone but not so much if there isn't enough new content.

Re: Nintendo Will "Continue To Enhance" Switch Online Content, To Encourage More Users To Try The Service

gokev13

The fact that they are not updating the NES or SNES online apps regularly concerns me. I love the apps and I loved the consistency of new content even if it was just a little a month. Sure it will be awhile yet before I get through the SNES games but whenever Nintendo does these things it makes me nervous that they are already phasing out the idea. For instance, I feel like Amiibo should be going stronger, but none of the stores in my area even get new releases and it is increasingly rare for new games to implement them in any meaningful ways.

I'm just worried that instead of getting a lot more games and systems added to the service we will be getting less and less and then it will be gone. Sure it's only been October without new games added if you include SNES but NES hasn't had anything added since August.

Re: Here Are The Top Ten Best-Selling Nintendo Switch Games As Of September 2019

gokev13

Maybe they should just make Nintendo Kart. They already started breaking through that wall with Mario Kart 8 already. A Metroid themed track, Splatoon themed track, Pikmin themed track, Earthbound, Starfox, etc. As much as I love the Mario Kart tradition branching it out to more IP's would probably be awesome. Mario Kart 8 DLC already showed us what it could be like and it was great.

Re: New Study Says External Issues Are More Likely To Blame For Gaming Addiction, Not Gaming Itself

gokev13

@Kidfunkadelic83
That's right. I still remember when a friend questioned how I could spend over $60 on a video, and what a waste of money that was. I didn't bother arguing at the time because there is not much I am going to say to convince her it is a worthwhile investment but I do know I could have pointed out several things she would have dropped money on no questions asked that I would have considered a waste of money.

The game in question was Tactics Ogre:Knights of Lodis for Gameboy advance back in 2002. I knew if I didn't bye it then I would probably never see it in a store again. I got hours of entertainment and stress relief out of that game over the years plus since everything bit came with is in good condition I could probably make back everything I paid for it if I chose to sell it. All things considered I got an incredible deal.

Re: New Study Says External Issues Are More Likely To Blame For Gaming Addiction, Not Gaming Itself

gokev13

They say most addictions are a symptom of other factors, so no surprise here.

For me gaming is an activity that I can do that helps me process things that are stressing me out. It's an activity that, even though seems expensive, is actually relatively cheap when you compare it to some other hobbies people partake in. Video games are so multifaceted; there is music, visual art, stories, puzzles, competition, etc. Games can feel very rewarding but at a low risk since you aren't as likely to get serious injuries, or lose a ton of money because of a dumb mistake.

One of the main problems that people seem to have with gaming is that it is time that could have been spent better, but that is a statement that could be said to any activity people choose to do depending on the values of the person issuing the statement.

Re: Ring Fit Adventure Version 1.1.0 Adds New Online Features

gokev13

I am interested in this but I hope other applications for the ring come out through the Switches lifetime. I can see myself being more motivated to exercise through this but naturally that motivation will probably wain as the game is completed. Hopefully they can keep things coming to keep encouraging it's use.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (October 19th)

gokev13

I was playing through Super Mario Kart and feeling very rusty, having a hard time staying on making turns while staying on the track and getting first place in a lot of races. Unlocked 150cc and then everything clicked again, I guess that was the mode my brain had hardwired itself for because suddenly it all clicked again and I was drifting around those corners like a pro. Still a tad rusty but it was definitely the fun game I remembered again.

Re: Guide: Nintendo Switch Online - Every NES And SNES Game Available

gokev13

I greatly enjoy being able to play these old games. I was happy to see the NES collection grow even if a lot of people thought they were being added far to slowly. Now that they aren't releasing games on a schedule I am concerned that new games will start being few and far between. As it was I enjoyed starting a new month wondering what new games would be added. September was great with 20 SNES games coming but now it's October and miss the anticipation of learning what was going to be added. I know, I'm a little weird.

I don't know why they have seperate Japanese and North America NES games, just put all of them together without forcing us to make a separate account. At first I was baffled that an untranslated Puyo Puyo 2 was released on the NA SNES online but then I played it for hours and was glad it was there.

Re: New Theory Suggests Nintendo Has Tried To Prevent Switch Lite Stick Drift After All

gokev13

I'm sure this was said already but I doubt that all cases of Drift are caused by the same thing. I think this addresses the problem my joy-cons suffered because of the nature of drift I had, which seemed like a different beast to what the Switch Lite drift videos showed. That's also probably why some drift issues were fixed by recalibrating or using contact cleaner but mine was not.

My WiiU's right stick has a similar issue to what I've seen with the light where sometimes after moving it seems to take a few seconds to register that the stick is back in the nuetral position. This issue although annoying at times did not really impact my play performance, especially since it was like the stick was still being tilted lightly and any movement that happened was slow and brief. The joy-con drifting was extreme, usually in one direction, happened a lot randomly and would cause a lot of annoyance and needless problems during gameplay.

If course since "drift" is a problem, everyone likes to lump any similar problem into the "drift" category when it may not be as extreme or caused by the same fault. When the Switch first came out, drift didn't seem to be as prevelent but a lot of people were having disconnecting issues, because of that when my joy-con first started drifting I originally thought it was because of a weak connection. Kind of like it was getting mixed or confused signals. That was maybe 8-10 months after I bought my Switch. Little did I know it was a separate issue that people weren't talking about as much yet.

Re: Pilotwings - 16-bit Flight Simulation, The Nintendo Way

gokev13

I played a lot of Pilotwings back in the day. It will always hold a special place in my heart. Of course between actually trying to get the license there was also a lot of messing around to. Trying to land the plane on one of the small side roads, popping all the grey bubbles on the ground with the rocketbelt, landing on the moving pad to play the penguin diving bonus game during skydiving, and of course seeing how late you could open the parachute while still landing safely. Good times!

Re: Review: Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition - A Gift That Keeps On Giving

gokev13

I am looking forward to getting this but not sure when it will be. I'm not even close to finishing Fire Emblem yet, at least I don't think I am. Working my way through Celeste, I wanted to complete everything in that game but I learned about golden strawberries recently so ... probably won't be getting all of those.

Either way, so many games to play and more coming out. I feel like I am letting so many good games just pass by as well, but I refuse to let Dragon Quest XI pass me by. It will be mine.

Re: Feature: 10 Of The Worst Nintendo Game Covers Ever

gokev13

Karnaaj Rally was clearly meant to be a joke. They made up a mock cover with that horrible picture of Ted from the last Christmas party and then unveiled it in front of everyone had a few laughs said it was a joke (much to Ted's relief).

However the laughter quickly turned to horror when they unveiled the actually cover and realized that there was some some kind of mixup, and now every single game was going to have that picture plastered on it.

Poor Ted was mortified.

Re: Poll: Is Your Switch Lite Suffering From Joy-Con Drift?

gokev13

@Old_Man_Nintendo

I have had three of my four joy-cons experience some major drift. At this point I feel like the forth is a matter of time. The two left ones that drifted both happened within the warranty period, the right drifting stick was a couple years after launch.

I don't feel like I am rough on my controllers, and I have taught my kids to be the same. I know the drift issue has to do with wear but I have not had issues like this with my other Nintendo controllers (and the old ones still work fine when I play them) so the joy-cons seem to wear out a lot faster than other controllers.

It's great that you and others have never had problems and hopefully you never do, but for those of us who have problems I really don't think you can chalk every case up to user abuse. Perhaps you take the utmost care of your joy-cons and perhaps that is why you've never had problems. Perhaps you are just lucky. Either way, I don't think you can paint everyone having issues with the same brush.

Re: Uh-Oh, We've Got Our First Reported Case Of Drift On The Switch Lite

gokev13

The drift I've experienced happens without input. The joy- stick is in the nuetral position can stay in the nuetral position and the drifting can start automatically without any user input.

I did have a similar problem to this with my WiiU gamepad. Sometimes if I was pressing a direction and then let the stick snap back to neutral it would then register another direction until I jiggled it again. It definitely didn't cause the same problems that the joy-con drift causes me and even though I can make it happen on my WiiU it never caused any problems in game other than a character moving a few seconds after I wanted to stop. With joy-con drift it seems to happen whether you are even using the joy stick or not.

Re: Uh-Oh, We've Got Our First Reported Case Of Drift On The Switch Lite

gokev13

@JayJ
I do believe the joy-con drift is a widespread problem. I have four joy-cons and I have had to send three of them in for repair. Two left and one right. I imagine my forth one is just a matter of time however. I was just talking with a friend on Sunday who also has problems with one of their joy-cons. I'm not saying it is going to happen to everyone but it is clear to me that you really don't have to go far to find someone experiencing the issue.

Recalibrating does nothing, but it can make some games hard to play. I really noticed it in Mario Maker 2 because I would be trying to make a level with the touch screen while fighting a Mario that would constantly start drifting away, moving the screen away from my workzone in the process. Usually if you jiggle the stick again it would go back to a neutral position but you could set the switch down not touching anything and before long Mario would start moving on his own again.

It is irritating and can make games that require precision like Mutant Mudds difficult because you never knew when a neutral joy stick would register up causing your jetpack to hyper jump you into an obstacle.

I've had a lot of Nintendo controllers and have only had minor problems with them. I take good care of my electronics as well. For me having three out of four controllers having an issue like this is a problem, and I personally know other switch owners having the same problem. It's not great.
(Still love the Switch though).

Re: Review: Super Mario World - Phenomenal Platforming Perfection

gokev13

Looking forward to playing this again. Of course my system of playing through the SNES online games starting from the bottom left and going right is biting me in the foot right now.

Don't get me wrong, I didn't hate Super Soccer, and I spent way more time playing Puyo Puyo 2 than I thought I would but getting through my second sports game in a row while classics like Super Mario World hang above my head is kind of torture (even if Super Tennis is actually kind of fun) Oh well, delayed gratification right?

Re: Hardware Review: Nintendo Switch Lite - Half A Switch, But That's More Than Enough For Some

gokev13

I would consider getting one of these but I don't like how since I downloaded Mario Maker 2 that only my account would be able to use it on both switches. I can understand not being able to play the downloaded version on both Switches at the same time but I bought the game for my family, and the Switches would be for the family so my family should enjoy the benefit of having multiple switches but as it stands my son would only be able to play Mario Maker 2 on the primary switch unless I buy his own copy.

I know people would take advantage of being able to fo this and I get why it is the way it is but I still don't like it and it seriously is the main reason I don't feel like buying a multiple Switches.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (September 7th)

gokev13

Started the SNES games, started on the bottom left and will work my way through them all in order. Puyo Puyo 2 was the first one and I didn't think I would be playing it to long before moving on but I keep trying to get the special boss and falling short. Somehow I have played it far to late two nights in a row not realizing how late it was. I wish I knew Japan s b cause the characters are so wacky looking I want know what they are saying, oh well it's still fun. I think I will try one more time playing through on very hard and maybe that will help me meet the requirements of getting the special boss but if not perhaps I will move on. I still need to get back to Fire Emblem and Celeste.

Re: SNES Games Are Officially Headed To Switch Online, And 20 Titles Release Tomorrow

gokev13

Come on Nintendo! How dare you after I finally finished all the NES games offered. How am I supposed to find time to play my backlog now? I cannot believe Nintendo did this to me!

Seriously though, this is awesome and I am excited for tomorrow even if I don't think I will be able to play them until Friday. The thing is SNES games are going to get a less complaints than the NES ones because game developers learned a lot about game design by then and there are a lot less garbage games on the SNES.

This is so great!

Re: Review: Astral Chain - Platinum's Best Game Ever? You'd Better Believe It

gokev13

Well if the game is as entertaining as this comment section, it should be very good indeed.

I probably won't play it though. I usually don't play Platinum's games, mostly because I have a long list of other games I want to spend time and money on and even though I am often interested in their games I just never get around to them.

Re: Reminder: Two More NES Games Hit The Switch, Plus Another Special Version Of Gradius

gokev13

Played a bit of Kung Fu Heroes last night, it's alright but not great, probably be better with a friend but I will still play through.

I've sunk a large number of hours into the NES online service, playing through all the games. Having save states and the rewind feature really help me appreciate some if these games more because even if I don't like the game at first I can still play through it without beating my head against the wall and experience the whole thing. It's kind of nice because you can examine them more like you would examine a work of art than you would a hard crappy game that you can barely get past the first level.
