I can see this being helpful for some people but as other people have stated you should be able to change the island representative among a few other things.
My sister in-law is a classic case of having to endure annoyance due to some of these restrictions. She got into Animal Crossing after watching her 7 year old son play it for awhile. So she started a character on his island and has been playing it regularly for over half a year now. Of course her son is the island resident but didn't care about progressing much so she ended up having to play his file to keep progress going in addition to her file. Her son also called the island "cool" which is a slight irritation to her especially since it starts with lower case. It would be nice to edit things like names especially since when she started playing she used a lower case letters to start her name because she didn't realize how to change to upper case. She asked me what it would take to start her own island but unfortunately she basically would have to but the game and a new switch again to do plus start over from scratch, which after playing for a few months seems rather annoying.
In conclusion I think in a game like Animal Crossing you should be able to make those kinds of adjustments especially since it relies heavily on real time. Switching Island residents seems like a must in a lot of families because it seems so common for the initial player to get tired of it while a spouse or parent becomes the main player. You should be able to change your islands name even if there is a penalty like it costs bells or something because after playing for months and customizing the crap out of your island you may have come up with a better name but your stuck with something your 7 year old came up with who doesn't even play it anymore. Now with being able to transfer a resident to a new island, those who were playing for months and putting a town of work into their current island will have to decide wether it is worth it to basically start an island from scratch.
I've been playing this game and so far I am really enjoying it. I like solving puzzles so I have been enjoying the ring battles so far, to the extent that I haven't really gotten fatigued by fighting normal enemies like I do in most RPG's, of course maybe by the end I will be tired of it. Of course the variety and quality of the rest of the game really helps it shine as well.
I like listening to the Final Fantasy: Distant Worlds soundtrack while working for a mix of relaxing and heart pumping songs. Also I often listen to Lara6683 while working. She can play songs from some of my favourite video games on piano extremely well. I often enjoy having her youtube channel playing in the background while working. Good stuff.
I'm usually playing handheld individually but the ability to have it on the TV for multiplayer or even if my kids just want to watch me play something is very important. Plus if I am alone in the house and have some free time I will go on the TV as well. The idea that Nintendo should just focus on the Switch Lite seems like a terrible strategy.
@TG16_IS_BAE Oh I see what you mean now. I'm not super concerned about it at the moment just a little wary and confused I guess. I bought 3d All-Stars and I kind of get why that was a limited release. I am not sure why Mario 35 is limited but maybe they are planning on expanding the concept in an actual retail release or something and this is more of a demo. I am really not sure why a localized NES game is a limited release especially since it seems to fit better on the NES Online service. I am still considering getting it though.
I probably play mine mostly handheld but come on. I still enjoy playing on the TV when I can and multiplayer games need a TV and detachable controllers. Plus, clearly people still be the regular Switch even though the Switch lite has been out for a year, I think the regular Switch is still out selling the Switch lite.
Plus don't give Nintendo any ideas right now. "Introducing the new Switch Pro, you can get this or the regular Switch at stores until March 31."
@TG16_IS_BAE I doubt there will be a major change to the eshop, perhaps the limited to March 31 trend has more to do with it being their year end or something.
I also doubt there will be a new console coming out soon except for maybe an upgraded Switch that can play better games but still play the existing library of games available in retail and the eshop. I could be wrong though. It happens from time to time.
Unless I misunderstood your comment it sounds like you haven't bought a Switch? I think my Switch has gotten the most use out of any of the Nintendo consoles I have owned due to a large and excellent library of games and the convenience it brings to the table. All things considered the Switch has been my favorite Nintendo console so far and that is even with the joy-con issues that I have had. Still, I doubt I would convince you to buy one if you haven't been convinced by now.
I'm starting to get a little concerned about this limited time only stuff. I'm assuming that it is on the eshop so why not keep it there? Are they planning on adding some if these to the online service a year after takedown or something? I just don't get it.
@nocdaes I think if the level pool was limited to what the remaining players picked that might help with shortening the length of rounds since the better players probably would be picking harder levels putting the pressure on as the round progresses. Though that system would have cons as well. I do tend to focus on getting the warp zones to give a better chance of my level showing up but it rarely seems to work.
I win pretty consistently, but my main goal is to keep unlocking levels, which I find the level I pick hardly shows up.
I agree with those who say some matches are too long. Yes, eventually time starts ticking down extremely fast eventually forcing someone to lose but in my opinion that could start happening sooner. Perhaps even during the final five, getting faster with each elimination. Still a very fun game though.
Went to my local Walmart and asked if I could get a game out of the display case, the employee looked at me and asked, "Mario?" I asked her how she knew and she said it was just the theme so far for the day. That was only an hour or so after they opened. They still had a lot in their case and the cashier said they had another unopened box with them in it so sounds like Nintendo didn't short on supply this time.
Yesterday I saw the headline to this article but I didn't open it. Went and picked up a copy and then when I opened it up I laughed because I knew exactly what the article was about.
I might just try my luck at a physical store but I am not holding my breath. I will probably end up getting digital at some point if I can't find a physical copy. No reason to buy from scalpers at this point.
@Maulbert I know I could buy those collections but at this point I would rather spend money on the online service and having more options than buying a bunch of collections and separate games. It just seems more convenient to me.
I really wish we would see Mega man, Disney games, Ninja Turtles, Castlevania, Enix, and Square Soft, but I doubt these will come for a number of reasons. Hopefully the rest of the Donkey Kong Country games come soon at least .
There are a few I am surprised we haven't seen yet like anything from the Mother series, and Startropics II.
11/12 I could not for the life of me remember what year was Luigi's 30th birthday. To be fair I am not great with dates and often have to think about it a little when telling people my age.
You know, it would be rather nice if you could grow DIY material trees with the shiny spots. I wished on a ton of stars one meteor shower and only got one cancer fragment and the next chance I got it already moved on to Leo fragments. Now I want to he able to grow these kinds of things. It would also be nice to grow rusted parts and gold nuggets.
It's a good thing that they are porting WiiU games even though I am not interested in buying the ones I already own. If I didn't get this during the Mario Kart 8 promotion back in the day I would be super excited.
These surprise announcements are fine but I wonder if there will be a Direct in September as they have been doing for a few years. I'm guessing that Paper Mario and Pikmin 3 were going to be announced at E3 along with the games during that mini direct.
It's getting frustrating not knowing what's coming with all the rumors of Pikmin 4, Metroid Prime Trilogy, Mario Anniversary Collection, and so forth. Are the going to release more Switch online condoles soon to keep people renewing their subscriptions? I really hope they have been working on getting a September Direct ready.
I said 2019 but I didn't play the game right. I have been loving the Switch so far and I feel that Nintendo has released some of the best entries for a lot of their IPs on the Switch. 2019 may not have had my favorite releases of all time but they still had some solid releases plus most things the released in previous years for the Switch are still readily available in stores and on the eshop, but you couldn't get everything in 2018 that you can in 2019 😉. I would have picked 2020 if the year was already over but for all I know by the end of 2020 Nintendo will suddenly close their doors. Unlikely but I can't commit to saying it's the best year yet.
Also a lot of my all time favorite games were on the super Nintendo and suddenly I could play a lot of them on the Switch in 2019 so that also was a main reason I picked that year.
@TheCatCountry I can relate with that perfectionism. My main goal with the game is to collect all the stamps on the Nook Miles phone app. I've just had to come to grips with the fact that I am going to have to pick and choose activities. Some of the newer things like swimming gets neglected and I played for a good chunk today and never even tried out dreaming yet.
@TheCatCountry I haven't actually gotten to the point of burnout yet, in the past I usually play Animal Crossing games roughly a bit everyday for about a year and then move on. I think I will be playing this one a lot more than others because usually by this time I can play 15 minutes most days just to check on everything, but I find myself turning on New Horizons and not even being able to finish everything I wanted to accomplish each day, and more keeps stuff keeps coming.
@johnvboy Yes, being able to customize every aspect of your island was a huge addition and is a great improvement from past games. My wife and I play the game everyday and we still haven't got the island exactly how we want, mostly because new stuff keeps coming to distract us.
@Sunflower Hopefully the updates just keep coming. I'm looking forward to seeing what comes next.
I actually like how the game adds more stuff as time goes on. I mean I was pretty happy with it before the updates but the fact that they just keep adding stuff is great, it keeps it fresh. Keep in mind they game was already delayed once before it's release date and it most likely would have come later if they were trying to put all this stuff in before they released it.
Just as long as the story doesn't involve Mega Man getting thrown back in time to present day where he has to befriend a lovable human and they will have to overcome there differences and learn to work together to defeat Dr. Wiley.
I was hopeful for the Mario Anniversary rumors but when it was supposed to be announced in a direct July 20 I was just going to wait and see, when F-zero was also rumored to be announced I actually became way more skeptical. When I saw a direct did happen on the 20th I was excited and them quickly noticed it was a third party mini direct and my heart sank. Now this. What a whirlwind of emotions and now I don't know what to believe anymore.
Someone had leaked last week that Nintendo was doing a Direct on Monday and they were going to announce the 35th anniversary 3d Mario game during it so when I saw that there was actually a Direct today but that it was a 3rd party mini one it was all around disappointing.
It's a shame that the battles don't have a lot of point again. The puzzle aspect of the battles does look fun to me and I wish they leaned a bit more into it, making it a story driven puzzle game. Each enemy can be a unique puzzle, defeating the enemy removes them from the map permanently, scatter a bunch of hidden enemies/puzzles throughout the world. After defeating the enemy you can replay that puzzle by going to a special house in Toad town that shows which puzzles you have found and which ones you figured out the solution to and then you could replay the ones you flopped to figure out the solution, getting rewards for solving all puzzles in an area (solving the puzzle would in this case involve lining up the enemies in the right way and defeating them without taking damage, boss puzzles could be solved in a minimum number of moves or something). I wouldn't care if the reward was as superficial as getting little stars by each puzzle or filling a trophy case or something. This setup would be enough for me to want to and enjoy fighting enemies throughout the whole game without getting fatigued with it.
This game is looking good and I hope it is without having a baffling decision that ruins the game. I did play Color Splash and found a lot to enjoy but I also felt the battle system was lacking. It was enjoyable at first but I agree with the people who say it didn't serve much point. It wasn't terrible in my eyes and there was some reward but the boss battles specifically were annoying since they were unbeatable without the one right card. I found that very frustrating because you would get to the boss, lose because you didn't have the right thing, try to figure out what thing it could possibly be, waste time getting that thing, and then losing again if your idea of what thing would work didn't work. It would have been a lot different if you could still beat the boss without the right thing as long as you has careful planning and built up a good deck and stuff. The right thing would just make the boss easier to beat.
I am excited to see what Origami King does with battles. Hopefully it is engaging and fun and rewarding. I don't so much care if it's different as long as it is fun.
I am disappointed with clubhouse games and I haven't even bought it. I was very interested in getting this and even more so after trying out the guest pass. I imagined having fun playing this with my kids, wife, nieces and nephews. I really enjoyed the games on the guest pass and I saw it was getting good reviews.
Before I went ahead and bought it I discovered that you could only play a couple of games local 4-player which really made me lose interest. I get a lot of the games are two plyer to begin with and I would have expected that but I cannot fathom why you wouldn't be able to play games like bowling, darts, golf, Yahtzee with four players locally just to name a few.
Same with the card games, sure they have the problem of being able to see each other's cards but my brother used to play a poker game on the Intelivision back in the day and that game had a work around where the cards showed the back until the player pressed a button to flip them over. The other player just had to close there eyes when you were looking at your cards. Sure there was peaking band cheating but the option to be able to play those card games with 4 players in the same room on one Switch would still be welcome.
This should have been cleaning a good game to get to enjoy with friends and family together but for some reason they limited local multiplayer a lot more than necessary.
I've been playing through Breath if Fire lately. I have a soft spot for 16 bit RPG's and Breath of Fire and Breath of Fire II were two games I salivated over as a kid but never got to play during that era, so I still have some nostalgia for them but the first one especially has some moments that require a lot of patience. It's not difficult and it had a lot of interesting ideas for that time but the pacing is just weird.
I tried the photoshoot last night and found I actually enjoyed it. I wasn't really a fan of Harvey's island because it just seemed pointless but having a goal involved with the opportunity to get more furniture made it feel fun. Plus sounds like you can mess around and make funny photos and still get rewarded. I hope there are more photoshoot events in the future.
These videos are great! I wonder if it would be possible to recreate the scene where Ben, Ron, and Chris are together after they all got food poisoning. Or some of Andy's shoe shining scenes with Kyle might be good. Actually the more I think the more excellent scenes come to my mind. I really should rewatch that show.
I for one enjoy when Nintendo Life does articles like this one. I never thought about if the N64 library could fit on Switch cartridge but now that I know, I can marvel at how technology has changed in my life time. Honestly though I probably don't read even half of the articles posted, but I usually check daily and click on the few that I am interested in. I don't really get why people get so bent out of shape about the articles they don't care for.
I wouldn't be surprised if the Metroid Prime Trilogy was originally planned as part of an E3 surprise release perhaps even coinciding with a trailer for Metroid Prime 4. However even if they did plan to release it at that time it is still up in the air whether it still would be released on time or delayed.
I still play it every day but I have been playing Animal Crossing games since the GameCube so I understand how to pace myself. Some days I play very minimal, just do a few basics, and sometimes I play longer working on a project or catching in season critters I haven't caught yet. I will probably play it pretty much everyday for about a year and that's when I feel like I don't need to play anymore. I suppose it might depend on how they update it.
Well I didn't vote for any of these. Of course that's because I didn't feel like it, but now I can't complain about the order since I didn't participate. So much regret.
@MysteryCupofJoe Yah, I commented on here before I noticed there was an actual video, the battle system looks promising and I am open to new ideas as long as they are fun and engaging.
I enjoyed Colour Splash but I do wish the battle system was better. I would have even been fine with the card system but it should have been implemented differently in my opinion. Also, bosses should have been beatable without bringing a specific thing card, just harder to beat.
I'm looking forward to learning more about this new Paper Mario game though. The trailer looked pretty good.
I don't really like rating games but I managed to find enjoyment out if every NES game on hear, even the ones I really didn't care for. Last one I played was Silius, and it was pretty fun.
@Phostachio In Wild World you even had to live in the same house which I am sure was probably due to technical limitations. My girlfriend and I still managed to enjoy the game together. Now here we are with playing an Animal Crossing game with our kids.
Again there can be a lot of real world benefits to sharing a game like this together.
I told my kids it was one island per console and made sure I played first since I suspected first player would make decisions similar to New Leaf. It has literally not been a problem at all in my family. In fact it is nice to work together toward a common goal in a game. We're slowly building a network of other family and friends with their own islands that we can visit, trade with, share turnip prices, etc.
Sure one island per Switch is probably partly to sell more Switches and copies of the game but I think there is more to the decision than just that. There are definite real world positives to sharing a virtual world. If I were reviewing the game myself I would rate it pretty high and the "one island per Switch issue" would be mentioned along with the potential problems and benefits but since it hasn't ruined my enjoyment of the game (in some cases it has enhanced it) it probably wouldn't negatively affect the score I would give it. Still I recognize it is a big problem for some.
For me Animal Crossing is really about the journey not the destination. I love how if played without time travelling it teaches you to patiently wait for things to progress as opposed to Harvest Moon or Stardew Valley which you can keep progressing for however long you keep playing (I also love HM and Stardew Valley).
My son keeps talking about wanting to time travel though but I forbid it since it would affect everyone else in the family. Yes that means that we sometimes let him play at later times than normal so he can catch nighttime critters and stuff like that but honestly I think the concept of delayed gratification is important. Being forced to wait for what you want instead of forcing what you want to happen when you want it is an important skill.
I read his article a couple days ago. Some of his wording reminded me of conversations I had with my classmates in elementary school. I just found he came off as immature. I'm not saying he didn't raise some valid points for why he doesn't enjoy the game but he made statements about respecting people who like the game and then insulted them by basically calling fans of the game babies. I don't respect that very much. Makes him come across as two-faced. He was probably just doing it for comedic effect though, so it doesn't really bother me. I personally love the game.
I prefer the way they did this holiday to having to find the time on what would normally be a busy holiday for me to play Animal Crossing on the actual Bunny Day, let alone try to collect a ton of eggs and prizes on during the day (especially when everyone else in my family wants to do the same thing). I admit it was starting to get old for me as well but felt like I could easily ignore most eggs so I didn't care to much. Perhaps it would have been better if you only had a week to collect eggs and recipes rather than since April 1st.
Apparently I still missed a recipe and as of yet I haven't had time to figure out what it was.
I am curious what the other events will be like I liked the Fishing tournament and managed to snag a bronze trophy. Do the points keep totaling for every tournament? I feel like the gold trophy would be difficult to get for me if they don't.

I think I will be playing this one a lot more than others because usually by this time I can play 15 minutes most days just to check on everything, but I find myself turning on New Horizons and not even being able to finish everything I wanted to accomplish each day, and more keeps stuff keeps coming.
@johnvboy
Yes, being able to customize every aspect of your island was a huge addition and is a great improvement from past games. My wife and I play the game everyday and we still haven't got the island exactly how we want, mostly because new stuff keeps coming to distract us.
@Sunflower
Hopefully the updates just keep coming. I'm looking forward to seeing what comes next.
Re: Animal Crossing: New Horizons Update 1.4.0 Patch Notes - Save Data Backup, Fireworks, Dreaming And More
I actually like how the game adds more stuff as time goes on. I mean I was pretty happy with it before the updates but the fact that they just keep adding stuff is great, it keeps it fresh. Keep in mind they game was already delayed once before it's release date and it most likely would have come later if they were trying to put all this stuff in before they released it.
Re: Mega Man's Live-Action Movie Still Happening, Expect Big News Soon
Just as long as the story doesn't involve Mega Man getting thrown back in time to present day where he has to befriend a lovable human and they will have to overcome there differences and learn to work together to defeat Dr. Wiley.
Re: It Looks Like That F-Zero Twitter Account Is Fake
I was hopeful for the Mario Anniversary rumors but when it was supposed to be announced in a direct July 20 I was just going to wait and see, when F-zero was also rumored to be announced I actually became way more skeptical. When I saw a direct did happen on the 20th I was excited and them quickly noticed it was a third party mini direct and my heart sank. Now this. What a whirlwind of emotions and now I don't know what to believe anymore.
Re: Poll: Did The Nintendo Direct Mini: Partners Showcase Meet Your Expectations?
Someone had leaked last week that Nintendo was doing a Direct on Monday and they were going to announce the 35th anniversary 3d Mario game during it so when I saw that there was actually a Direct today but that it was a 3rd party mini one it was all around disappointing.
An actual Direct would be nice sometime.
Re: Review: Paper Mario: The Origami King - A Puzzling Battle System Can't Kill This Funny Adventure
Re: Can You Name These Switch Games From Their Menu Icons?
I got 7. I guess I don't pay attention to a lot of the games on the eShop, but to be fair, there is a ton.
Re: Paper Mario: The Origami King Features A Seamless Open World And "Huge Maps"
Re: Japanese Charts: Animal Crossing Keeps Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics From Top Spot
Re: Feature: Every Nintendo Switch Online SNES Game Ranked
I've been playing through Breath if Fire lately. I have a soft spot for 16 bit RPG's and Breath of Fire and Breath of Fire II were two games I salivated over as a kid but never got to play during that era, so I still have some nostalgia for them but the first one especially has some moments that require a lot of patience. It's not difficult and it had a lot of interesting ideas for that time but the pacing is just weird.
Re: Random: Not All Animal Crossing Players Are Having Happy Wedding Seasons
I tried the photoshoot last night and found I actually enjoyed it. I wasn't really a fan of Harvey's island because it just seemed pointless but having a goal involved with the opportunity to get more furniture made it feel fun. Plus sounds like you can mess around and make funny photos and still get rewarded. I hope there are more photoshoot events in the future.
Re: Random: Animal Crossing Player Expertly Recreates Parks And Recreation Scene
Re: Random: Every Nintendo 64 Game Ever Released Would Fit Onto A Single Switch Cartridge
Re: Swedish Retailer Updates Its Listing For Metroid Prime Trilogy On Switch, Says It's Arriving Next Month
I wouldn't be surprised if the Metroid Prime Trilogy was originally planned as part of an E3 surprise release perhaps even coinciding with a trailer for Metroid Prime 4. However even if they did plan to release it at that time it is still up in the air whether it still would be released on time or delayed.
Re: Talking Point: Are You Suffering From Animal Crossing: New Horizons Fatigue?
I still play it every day but I have been playing Animal Crossing games since the GameCube so I understand how to pace myself. Some days I play very minimal, just do a few basics, and sometimes I play longer working on a project or catching in season critters I haven't caught yet. I will probably play it pretty much everyday for about a year and that's when I feel like I don't need to play anymore. I suppose it might depend on how they update it.
Re: Feature: Every Nintendo Switch Online NES Game Ranked
Well I didn't vote for any of these. Of course that's because I didn't feel like it, but now I can't complain about the order since I didn't participate. So much regret.
Re: Gallery: Paper Mario: The Origami King - 20 Gorgeous Screenshots And Box Art Revealed
@MysteryCupofJoe
Yah, I commented on here before I noticed there was an actual video, the battle system looks promising and I am open to new ideas as long as they are fun and engaging.
Re: Poll: Rate Your Favourite Nintendo Switch Online NES Games
I don't really like rating games but I managed to find enjoyment out if every NES game on hear, even the ones I really didn't care for. Last one I played was Silius, and it was pretty fun.
I feel like we are due for an update though.
Re: Gallery: Paper Mario: The Origami King - 20 Gorgeous Screenshots And Box Art Revealed
Hmmm...I can't tell what the battle system is like from the pictures. Hopefully they went back to a more traditional system.
Re: One Month Later, Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ Review-Bombing Is Only Getting Worse
@Phostachio
In Wild World you even had to live in the same house which I am sure was probably due to technical limitations. My girlfriend and I still managed to enjoy the game together. Now here we are with playing an Animal Crossing game with our kids.
Again there can be a lot of real world benefits to sharing a game like this together.
Re: One Month Later, Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ Review-Bombing Is Only Getting Worse
Re: Poll: Is It Cool To Time Travel In Animal Crossing: New Horizons?
Re: Random: Animal Crossing: New Horizons Is "Dumb" And "For Children" Says Business Insider Column
Re: Bravely Default Producer Apologises For End Layer On 3DS, Says It Didn't Live Up To Expectations
I loved both Bravely Default games, and I'm a little confused like a lot of people on here about the need for an apology.
I haven't tried the demo yet for Bravely Default II. Not sure when I will get around to it.
Re: Reminder: Today Is Bunny Day In Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Re: Animal Crossing Villagers Are Now Referencing Brewster, Is A Coffee Shop Update Imminent?
For some strange reason I enjoy having a daily coffee in Animal Crossing so Brewster would definitely be welcome.
