Re: Random: Pokémon In Unreal Engine Looks Like Skyrim

@Yorumi For-profit companies typically aspire to make (and not lose) money - Nintendo and the Pokémon Company included. Spending more money to make Pokémon games look better won’t translate to more sales, and they aren’t just going to throw away money like that. They spent ~$25 million on SwSh, and spending I don’t know, ~$40 million (total) or so to make it look better is essentially flushing $15 million down the drain since it equates to roughly 0 extra sales. It isn’t about making a great game, it’s about making money. Simple as that. I wish it weren’t true, but unfortunately, it is.

Okay, honestly, I strongly dislike the European cover art. The first time I saw it I'm sure I said "gross" out loud. Night and day difference in terms of likability in my mind. Link's pose is extremely awkward, and his body just looks out of proportion with itself. And what's with the out of focus bird blob at the top right? The oversaturated colors are just ugly. It's really, really bad in my opinion. I never comment on these Box Art Brawl articles, but I couldn't just stand by and say nothing this time, hahaha..

For what its worth, here's some hot takes:

Recommend:

Hotline Miami

Everything about this is amazing

Carrion

Controls are a joy
You 100% do not need a map

Ape Out

Hotline Miami is similar but better in every way
Still a great game

Gato Roboto

Nice and tight little Metroid-like

Reigns

Simple yet cool game to relax and kill time
Better suited to mobile
Cheaper on mobile

Don't recommend:

Katana Zero

Overrated story (tries too hard to be cool)
Frustrating/inconsistent mechanics

Talos Principle

Puzzles are not nearly as fun as say Portal, QUBE, or Antichamber
Didn't come even close to finishing it so it could get better?

@Ambassador_Kong I agree, as mentioned above, I was just pointing out the irony of a rushed to market Mario game when that’s Miyamoto’s most famous quote.

Since you and a couple people pointed that out though, I was thinking about what that quote really means, and I believe it does still stand to a certain degree. Generally speaking, game review scores are not typically updated after the initial review is published. I know some sites will update reviews for popular games when they have changed significantly over time, but a lot of games don't get that second chance. This collection has been getting generally stellar reviews despite it's shortcomings, so it probably doesn't really apply here, but the concept does connect with many games out there that have fixed the issues mentioned in their reviews. Of course, its really that the game's legacy remains "bad forever" rather than the game itself in these scenarios, but still, I think it's worth consideration.

@RiasGremory Delay it so there aren’t any issues to begin with - add some control configuration options, get it running at 60fps, widescreen throughout, etc. That's not unreasonable.

This had the potential to be the best video game compilation maybe ever, but instead it’s an 8/10

Imagine Neil Armstrong touching his toe to the moon surface and turning around like “We did it, let’s go home boys!”

It’s still cool, but pretty anticlimactic

It’s supposed to be part of a celebration for one of the biggest IPs in the world and they kinda just phoned it in.

Let’s say I go to a restaurant, and order the soup, and it’s REALLY good, so it costs $60. I’m eating it and man, it’s delicious, but it’s not hot, it’s just room temperature. My experience is going to suffer, and I have the right to complain about it. This restaurant is famous for this soup, and it’s considered some of the best soup ever made. Eating it cold is not going to kill me, or probably hurt me in any way, and yeah the soup is still good - it’s not like it changed the way the soup tastes, not really - but it kinda weirded me out and gives me pause about returning to the restaurant in the future. I’m a bit disappointed with this soup.

When I complain to the chef (or write a bad review), I expect him/her to fix it - it’s not that big of a deal, but I paid good money for that soup.

What I don’t expect is for other people in the restaurant to say, “you should be thankful you got soup at all” or, “I’d like to see you make better soup” or, “your soup isn’t hot because the chef had to get it out to you faster” or, “there are bigger problems in the world besides the temperature of your soup.” Those kind of responses are absurd.

@eRaz0r Speaking of back in the SNES days, look at how much love they put into the original Super Mario All-Stars. They completely remade and updated 4 whole games, including one that never previously was available in North America. I was definitely never expecting the new collection to be 4 completely remade games, obviously that is a lot to ask (in 2020 especially), but I would have appreciated each game at 1080p, widescreen, 60fps, and multiple/adjustable/accessible control setups.

The collection doesn't suck, don't get me wrong, it just deserved more love than it got.

@Snakesglowcaps You may be right. To be clear, I don't think any of the complaints against this game collection are a big deal whatsoever. However, I would much rather see Mario get the respect he deserves, even if that means the game comes out next year. As several people pointed out, if they're going to make the same amount of money regardless how much effort they put in, why put in more effort? And that makes sense in the short run, but in the long run, quality will only continue to decrease. In 20 years, I don't want to see Mario where Sonic is today.
