One year ago, Nintendo officially released Mario Kart Tour on Android and IOS mobile devices around the world.
To celebrate the game's first anniversary, Nintendo will be hosting a special tour, appropriately named "1st Anniversary Tour" and will show a preview of it at a later date.
Can you believe it's been one year since #MarioKartTour was released? Thank you for playing! To commemorate the anniversary, the next tour will be called the 1st Anniversary Tour. We'll show a preview of it at a later time.
It's got us wondering though - are you still playing this mobile entry on a regular basis a year after it's release? Pick one of the many options in the poll below and share your experiences so far in the comments section.

I've never played it and have no desire to play it.
I don't play mobile games I insist on proper hardware.
Uninstalled it after about 20 minutes.
Play it everyday
I stopped playing within an hour of starting it, awful game
I had fun with it for the first two months of release. After seeing how unforgiving the game was with its micro-transactions, plus the fact that you always needed the brand new stuff to even get good scores, I abandoned ship and never looked back. Stuff like Dixie Kong and the SNES racers made it slightly tempting to go back, but it still didn’t make me want to open the app. Basically, I like the game at its core, as it plays like a mobile Mario Kart game. But with how you constantly need rubies to get anywhere in the game, it starts to become a waste of time and money. There’s many other Nintendo games to be entertained by that don’t require that sort of predatory mindset.
I still play it sometimes, but it's impossible to reach a certain rank. They obviously require premium characters and karts to rack up those scores.
...but it passes the time on train, back when I did that everyday. These days I'd rather play MK8D if I'm at home.
I almost never play this, and I've loved Mario Kart since the SNES days.
Fire Emblem Heroes on the other hand - I've played that literally every day since it launched.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe until the next mainline entry, or Crash Team Racing if I want something different in the karting genre. Stopped bothering with freemium games years ago so this never got a look from me.
Played it for a few minutes when it first released, didn't like it and when I tried re-installing it to see if it improved at all recently, it kept giving an error message so guess it doesn't like me either.
I still play it regularly. I too despise the microtransactions and just wish Nintendo never took this route. But I learned to just ignore it and have fun with what I have. I never spent a cent on this game and I don't intend to. If I can get a good score with the characters I have fine, if I can't it's fine too. MKT, while not better than the latest MK, brought some good stuff to the table: characters that had never appeared in a MK game (Monty Mole, Hammer Bro, Pauline etc), characters that haven't appeared in a long time (Diddy Kong), and finally the twist and reverse tracks, which are much better than the mirror tracks in the standard games.
I don't play any phone games. I tried to a couple of Galaxy S whatever generations ago and for some reason hated every minute of it. Surprised me too because obviously I'm a video game player but on a phone I hated the experience oh so much.
I get error messages every time I try to play. Kinda pathetic.
I never touched it. I'm not fond of mobile games and this one features all the elements about mobile gaming that I dislike. A shame really as I love Mario Kart. At least there's still Mario Kart 8 to play on the go though.
My daughter, who was 4 at the time of release, really enjoyed it.
Now though she just plays the real thing on her Switch and hasn’t looked back.
My son and I gave it, maybe, 30mins. It wasn’t bad, just not as good as the real thing (or any other game we own).
I haven’t spent a penny on this game. You don’t always need the special ruby players to compete. Every week if your winning, they give you 40 to 50 rubies.
Here’s my score so far on this tour
post image online
Play it every day, never spent a penny on it and just won Sunshine Mario, this game just keeps giving! Current player level 105.
I have it on my phone and I enjoy the game, but I have some issues with the game since I'm f2p.
The biggest issue is how hard it is to get Rubies so you can do a multi summon off a pipe.
With Dragon Ball Legends and Fire Emblem Heroes, I can at least play enough in-game events and missions to earn enough in-game currency to get some summons in.
With Mario Kart Tour, I can't do that, and many of the in-game rewards are locked behind that stupid pass.
So, when I do play mobile phone games, I just play Dragon Ball Legends or Fire Emblem Heroes.
At least those games let me earn enough as a f2p player to summon off banners or unlock characters who are f2p through events that can't be found on banners.
The PvP might have been a good aspect, but it feels tacked on. Fire Emblem Heroes has rewards for playing PvP, and Dragon Ball Legends has rewards, as well as Chrono Crystals to the players who place in the top 20K.
Mario Kart? Nothing is given for playing PvP.
But with all that said, I do think the game plays well, the roster is really good with tons of Mario characters(if you can pull them), and I like the remixed courses.
Some QoL improvements, and maybe a way to earn Rubies for f2p players would help out.
Downloaded it to see what it was like out of curiosity.
Uninstalled it after about 60 seconds.
Lol absolutely not. Not fun, not addictive, cash grab, battery hog
The phone version were so bad that i completed one track, and uninstalled it forever.
Why play MK WT when you have Mario Kart 8?
Stopped playing after a few weeks, when the grinding became too steep and obvious.
It’s a good game, doesn’t force me to pay a dime either because it gives away so many rubies and coins
I only play it with my brother online. It's the only Nintendo game we can play online together because he's too cheap to buy a Switch...
I tried once out of curiosity and uninstalled it right away. Utterly pointless when owning MK8 on Switch
I dont support cashgrab games
I just started to play it last week, to complete the MyNintendo Missions, so that I could get the Super Mario Bros Collectors Pin Set. I officially completed all 6 Missions (1. Visit the Super Mario website.. 2. Take the Super Mario Quiz.. 3. Download the "This is My Mario" image.. 4. Play a song from the Super Mario Music Player on the website.. 5. Play the Super Mario Kart Tour in Mario Kart Tour.. 6. Buy Super Mario 3D All-Stars). I've completed all 6, so now I get the Super Mario Bros Collectible Pin Set.. https://i.postimg.cc/MT5wWypS/RGJCWAk.jpg
I stopped playing halfway through the demo
I'ma be honest with you, I forgot about this game until this month's direct.
I love mk7 & mk8, but I couldn't get into mario kart tour.
Didn't last a day on my phone. Was hugely disappointed and not liky to ever try it again
Games on the go that suck up your phone data? No thanks.
I wanted to try out the game again to see how the widescreen worked and to play in the Super Mario Kart Tour, but they stopped supporting all of the tablets and the phone I own.
Never played, why game on phone when console is much better
I've played 2 phone games on Android. One was a point and click puzzle game and was pretty cool. The other was the FE one (and I don't even like the mainline series) and I did it for platinum coins so I could get those Nintendo posters. Was worth it, but I stopped playing not long after.
I stopped playing about a day after release. This isn't the Mario Kart experience I love. And the spending mechanics put me off a lot.
Been playing it everyday since launch. It's a far cry from the console games, but it's all the new Mario Kart I have for now, until MK9 comes along.
Yes all thought it crashes after one race and start a new race.
The L.A corse my phone plays al the levels apart from any L.A levels .
Never touched it and I never will.
Installed it, realized it was just a worse mario kart with gacha elements, stopped playing. A few months later got annoyed by the game bugging me with notifications so I uninstalled it.
Never played it. I hear it's not that good though...
I love the comments here.
My turn
Why play this when you can play crazy taxi
I play it almost daily, I really like this game. This is the most fun I've had in Mario Kart in forever!
Never tried it. I'm fine with console Mario Kart and I've got a ton of games I still need to get through. Maybe when I have the time,. I'll check it out
I didn't get it at launch but I stopped playing it after a few weeks of getting it. Felt quite lacklustre and soulless. Unlike other MK's, I didn't feel the pull to get back and play it. I actually tried to like it.
Didn't like portrait mode, but I believe it recently went landscape. It's not enough to make me play it again.
But I'm not really much of a phone gamer. The only things I've stuck with are Motorsport Manager and Golf Clash.
@everynowandben
I loved Fire Emblem Heroes for a solid year, but then it got so monotonous. Same for Pokemon Go, but I did reinstall that one and have been enjoying it. Mario Kart Tour and that Mario run one didn't last very long on my phone. Nor did COD Mobile. So I guess I'm not a mobile gamer
why are you asking this when you know very well that the majority of the users here are Nintendo Elitists that cannot stand that people is having fun with something they consider "inferior" or "too mainstream"?
I just log in to get the bonuses. I think the last pipe gave me DK as a character so I am pretty happy. I just don't like using my finger as a control.
Praying that they are not counting this as this generations MK. But it is almost looking like it
I stop playing when I got touch screen drift, yep it even transfers over to ios to.
Mobile games in my opinion is awful
Holy flurcking shnit! Where is Mario Kart 9!😵
No ofcourse not. Miss me with that cashgrab *****.
I play Mario Kart Tour pretty regularly. I do spend money on it from time to time whenever I have a little cash to spare. Not a lot though. I do like the fact that they have an insane roster of drivers, karts and flyers. Some of the tracks are fun and unique.
But the bots that you race against are extremely brutal! How do I have a frenzy and bots are passing me? Or I can have a Mega Mushroom, hit somebody, and it just bumps them to the side instead of causing them to wipe out? And bots recover from crashes way too quickly and are extremely quick. Not to mention green shells are deadly accurate! Way more than a red shell. And don’t even get me started on how your Kart is somehow magnetically drawn to every banana or bomb on the course. And drifting can be hit or miss most of the time.
Rubies can be difficult to come by. And coins can be difficult to come by as well for those more expensive items (like high end tickets). And it sucks that Nintendo requires you to have the new, introductory items for the week to even do well in the new course. I just have to pray that my older characters, karts and flyers, that I’ve upgraded from previous cups, are included in the top shelf for the new track.
Here’s how I’m doing on this week’s cup:

@Plasmamonkey your smashing it. Really great score.
I've never even touched it. The only mobile game I play is Pokemon Go.
Haven't really played it since I got a Switch Lite in June.
Sure, I play it sometimes between online races in CTR.
Played it for about 4 hours. That was enough.
Playing no longer. Never had a problem with the freemium nature, and the touchscreen controls in this case proved at least more manageable than I had ever envisioned them to be, but the content updates eventually left me lacking motivation to grind new cups - other mobile freemiums kinda spoiled me with a variety of characters in the roster, and in the wake of MK8 with its Links and Inkgirls I admittedly expected more than multiple alternate outfits out the gate (although Daisy was always fun to race with).
Compared with the still quite imperfect nature of touchscreen steering in a driving game, it cooled me down and I needed space for other stuff to try on the mobile front. Including, if my memory serves me right, Fire Emblem Heroes back then - itself no stranger to alternate outfits, but still gloriously BURIED in characters and recurrently adding new faces to this day.
Where's the "stopped playing a day after it released" option
Of all the mobile games Nintendo has released, this is the one I've spent the least time with. It becomes boring and repetitive to quickly.
Where's the 'I couldn't be bothered to download it' option.
There are so many Mario Kart games already in my collection that don't have the mobile trappings that when I get the urge to play Mario Kart, I have plenty to choose from.
Wheres the "I forgot this exsited" option? But if they add this much content to a future mk9 without the microtransactions it could be the best one yet.
I never touched it. Mobile games are a such a turn off for me.
I deleted that trash after 1 race.
1 race was all it took, then I deleted it pissed off that I wasted 300mb or whatever it was to play it.
I was really into it when it released, i had all the rare characters and pretty much played all day. However, after a month i stopped playing regularly and uninstalled it.
I reinstalled it in the beggining of the month because i liked the retro mario character, and since than I'm playing regularly. Not as much as i did back in the release, but i sure am back at it
If you're a fan of mobile games, I can see where people would like it and that's cool. For me personally, I've been with the series since the SNES original and I tried to give it a chance but I found it to be infuriatingly bad and an embarrassment to the brand. I don't mind that it exists but the problem is if it has an effects on the franchise as a whole going forward. My biggest fear is what this means for other franchises like Zelda if they get a similar treatment. Hopefully these will remain a casual outlier to their respective series and not impact mainstream entries.
I was one of the beta testers. I didn't love it but it was fine enough that I was willing to give it a chance when it launched. I was immediately repulsed by the oversaturation of gacha / mobile monetization mechanics, and on my first pull of the pipe I was stuck with the racer I dislike the most: Toadette. I deleted the app immediately and only reinstalled it earlier this month to fulfill the requirement for a set of Super Mario 3D All-Stars pins, which of course I did not get because they ran out of stock.
Overall I have nothing positive to say about Mario Kart Tour, and in fact I hate it for continuing to get new content, tracks, racers, etc. while Mario Kart 8 Deluxe remains stagnant three years after release.
Looked into it for a couple of rounds out of curiosity and deleted it after that.
Typical mobile game nonsense. Heavy focus on FOMO and aggressive monetization.
As always, had potential as a nice time-waster game if it was handled as such and not as the usual whale milking scheme
Oh well, as long as people are willing to sink money into it before it inevitably goes the way of the dodo, more power to them ¯(ツ)/¯
I played it for about 15 minutes when taking a huge dump on the toilet, but then I realized I could have been playing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe instead.
I played for a bit and got charged too which I wasn’t expecting and that put me right off.
I played for 10 seconds, before the game tried getting me to buy an overpriced item for 40 USD! I could buy Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 for that amount of money, this game is trash
Sadly I am still playing. Trying to crack the top 1000
Just downloaded it as part of the “Mario Missions” for that exclusive pin set (pointless actually.....). I hesitated the past year as part of my protest against games with micro transactions, fearing it would be hard to control.
But I actually don’t regret it. The game is fun! Enjoying the “unique levels to the game angle” that reflect cities. Just adding to the race track lore of Mario Kart!
By the way, those transactions are very expensive. Would rather play full price like I did for Super Mario Run. But just play the game for free....don’t fall into that trap, folks.
I played it long enough to realize it's completely ruined by being clogged to the gills with micro-payments and pay-to-play time gating nonsense, same as the Dr. Mario game.
"It's Been One Year Since Mario Kart Tour Was Released, Are You Still Playing It?"
lol no why would anyone be still playing that pointless trash? People are paying a $5 fee each month just to earn free gems lol....that's all that game is...smh.
Downloaded it, never opened the app.
No interest. I tried AC Pocket Camp and it sucked. Mario Run was decently designed but also boring. Fire Emblem I tried a few times but it was crap compared to the real games which I have accessible on handhelds.
Never have, never will. And the same goes for any mobile game regardless of what franchise it may be tied to.
I left because I got tired of waiting for LIVE h2h (or pvp) racing. Is that a thing now? If so, I'll come back.
Still playing this fun game, yes, the gatcha is horrible in this business and the control, well, dtill some awful, but the game is fun, and really challenging, cpu players are very hard, more that last entries of Mario Kart
@AGSTROS months ago that multiplayer online and local is available...
Installed it day 1 - hated the controls - uninstalled - never touched this stupid game again
Not gonna lie, I forgot this game existed lol
No. The game is trash.
I started from week 1 and got lucky a few times. I can't win rank cups a lot (It does happen.) but the game is made so its perfectly doable to clear the important stuff, hoard rubies and then splurge on the cup you REALLY want!
The continously bring new courses, which they reverse, remix, fill with tricks etc.
So it's mindless fun for someone who doesn't need to have everything or be the absolute best. Can't wait to play all the old tour courses next week!!
I don't like that you can't buying it in Belgium
The same for Ninjala.
No, playing on Smartphones is just no fun, even with a proper Controller.
I stopped after a week.
I downloaded it when landscape mode was introduced, I played it for like a minute and just kinda stopped
Nah Nintendo mobile games suck.
I think I tried once only. I've never experienced a mobile game that didn't end up turning me off. Dr Mario World probably held my attention for the longest of any mobile game, but eventually the grinding became too much.
No I played for 3 hours on launch day and all it did was make me want to play a console Mario Kart
Definitely not. Maybe played it for a couple of days? Couldn’t do it anymore. Trash. It’s a BEAUTIFUL game, but it’s trash.
@AcridSkull I too uninstalled it after about 20 minutes. What a garbage fest of a game. I honestly can't fathom why anyone would touch this when literally any other Mario Kart or racing game or... game of any genre... or books and TV exist.
I think I put in about 30min play time. Then uninstalled it 🤷♂️
If it was a different pay model, it would be pretty impressive. But it's the diminishing returns slow transition to addiction model. It works in the mobile space for some people, but... nope.
That said, Mario Run tried the pay model. It was actually a very interesting game, but priced badly, AND a failure in the market overall.
What I wonder is if these mobile games are doing the job of keeping the IP fresh in people's minds, making some money from people who like that type of "$ might make it fun, or at least let you see a sliver more" model.
If they make most gamers just want to play the true games these are based on, they are doing their job. I would just love to see some survey results or data on that.
If not, I'd rather see Nintendo pursue other places to keep their IP on people's minds: amusement parks, movies, TV shows, and other entertainment.
I played it recently because I thought I needed to in order to get the 35th Anniversary Pin Set! Little did I know that it wasn't required, Amazon would be late with my game, and Nintendo would do what Nintendo does and make a very limited amount, leading to scalpers online selling pin sets for $100-$250!
Go Nintendo Go!
I can't even reinstall it. I get the same error every time I launch it. So I gave up after trying to play again for the mario event
I play fairly regularly. I haven't spent any money on it, though, and when I play it's just because I'm bored at work
@DK-Fan Most folks aren't Ninty fanboys so they don't like when games are released to milk their wallets with microtransactions. Nintendo doesn't get a pass from everyone for being greedy scumbags just because they are Nintendo.
This game is fundamentally unplayable, in my opinion. It’s drowning in steep microtransactions, and the base control scheme is wonky and unmanageable. The only thing I like about it is the character roster, and I hope future console Mario Kart games borrow that page from Tour, but absolutely nothing else.
I can guarantee that 90% of people whining about the game did not play it recently.
@1UP_MARIO Same here, I still am enjoying playing it to this day!
@Mhayes111387 I haven't spent a single penny on the game and I still am enjoying playing it!
@dings I also haven't spent money on the game but I still am enjoying playing it whenever i'm bored.
@eRaz0r Same I hate the developers for making this game.
Stopped playing the game some time ago. It's Mario Kart in name only now.
