Re: Best Sonic Games Of All Time

@CallingSonicSpeed My true score for that game (on GameFAQs) is 7/10. I typically rank games on NL relative to whatever else is on the poll or list at the time. PokΓ©mon S&S provided me with over 100 hours of fun, and I greatly prefer the DLC concept over a third version. I also appreciated the QoL improvements to the formula. S&S is a breezy and frictionless, yet charming and engaging title. It has flaws, such as sub-par graphics, and the dexit situation, but it was fun from start to finish. Have you ever actually played it? Are there thoughts behind your opinions?

I hate to say it, but, they're all bad. I'm sorry, but it's true. I've played at least half of these and beaten around 1/3 of them. Just last year, I was finally able to take off my nostalgia goggles, and realize that none of the Sonic are games are actually good or fun. Level design is meh at it's peak, the stories are nonsense in the worst possible way, the characters are all awful, the game mechanics are shallow (and often broken), and most importantly, 90% of the gameplay just doesn't feel good. Simply put, Sonic games are bad - not just the new ones - all of them. Instead of wading through a cesspool of mediocrity based on nostalgia, I recommend playing games that are actually enjoyable.

I've been waiting for a sale on Strife: Veteran Edition and it finally happened. I wanted it on Switch for that wonderful gyro aiming Switch is known for, and it was worth the wait. I'm only about 1/4 of the way through it, but this game was clearly ahead of its time (originally released in 1996), and extremely interesting as a fan of FPS/RPGs and immersive sims. Can't wait to play more!

Link's Awakening DX
Pokemon Crystal
Zelda Oracle of Ages/Seasons
Game & Watch Gallery 2/3

Caution - Hot takes below:

Pokemon Yellow is better than Red/Blue, but gen one is overrated anyway.

How come Pokemon Pinball is always missing the battery cover?

I played a bit of that leaked version of Pokemon Picross - seemed like a winner, but I have a LOT of other picross games to get through first.

DKL3 (J) is pretty okay, but DKL2 is still better.

SMB Deluxe has great extras, but that shrunken screen size is deal-breakingly small and off-putting.

Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble is difficult to play without a screen mod, so I installed an IPS screen on my GBC. ...Probably wasn't worth it.

There's a bootleg Fire Emblem game that's a bit bananas, but halfway decent for what it is. However, it's only partially fan translated, which kills a fair amount of the appeal for me. Also it's prettttty clunky on top of already being difficult.

Shantae is gorgeous, but not especially fun relative to it's vastly superior sequels.

I never really got into Wario Land 3 since I thought WL2 was only okay. I prefer the gameplay of the original and VB, even compared to WL4 and Shake It.

I keep meaning to play RE Gaiden and Daikatana, but haven't yet.

5 seems a bit harsh, although I'd still only give it a 6. If you like both horror and walking sims, I would recommend giving it a go when it goes on sale, but I wouldn't pay more than $10 for it. I might be in the minority with this opinion, but I prefer LoF2 over Amnesia 2 and Soma. This game does some neat stuff sometimes - it definitely has some cool moments. In the end, if you didn't like the first one, this will definitely not win you over, as it is worse overall in my opinion.

Re: Talking Point: When Was The Last Time A Game Cracked Your Top Five?

@Classic603 That's totally fair. While I know I'm not alone in loving the original, without a doubt some of that love comes from the time and place.

If you decide to replay it, just remind yourself that it came out almost 30 years ago, and in 1993, it felt like a miracle to play something so big, and so epic on the playground at recess, or in the car on the ride home from school.

Re: Talking Point: When Was The Last Time A Game Cracked Your Top Five?

@Classic603 I loved the art style, and having extra buttons was a nice QoL improvement, but overall I felt like the remake didn't quite capture the charm and magic of the original.

Maybe it's nostalgia goggles to be honest. I played it as a kid way back when it first came out, and previous to that I had never played anything beyond the scope of SMB and Tetris, so it not only opened me up a new genre, but it sort of redefined what games could even be in my young mind.

I also feel like there is/was something special about how the original felt like pushed beyond the limitations of the hardware which made it feel bigger than possible. Of course with vastly superior hardware, any remake just isn't going to be able to match that feeling, and it lost a part of what made the original so special.

Additionally, I was beyond hyped for the remake when it was announced - I couldn't believe it was actually happening - and so maybe my expectations were ultimately just too high.

I still enjoyed the remake, but it's probably not even in my top 75 whereas the original is possibly my favorite - can't decide beyond the 9 or 10 games I listed.

I'm curious if you have feelings on the topic as well, or if you were just asking. Please share if you do πŸ˜ƒ

Re: Soapbox: Be Happy, This Is The True Golden Age Of Gaming

"Back in my day, we had physical manuals and all the content was on the disc. Not a micro transaction in sight! We had to walk to FuncoLand uphill both ways, and trade in our SNES cartridges for pennies just to get an N64. And when we got home from renting Mario Kart at BlockBuster, we gathered around the 24" CRT in the living room with 8' extention cables and we liked it! Scanlines and all! In my day, games were hard as nails, and we'd leave the NES on all night if we had to. We had that game for the weekend and we played it whether we liked it or not! The only 'day one patch' I ever heard of was for my eye from sitting too close to the TV playing GoldenEye splitscreen deathmatch after school. Now get off my lawn, ya whippersnapper!"

So many of these comments just sound like rambling grandpa cliches πŸ˜‚

Re: Soapbox: Game Genres Are Broken

everynowandben

Genres labels are great for efficiently communicating generalities, but typically breakdown quickly when we look closer and really start analyzing. The biggest problem with genres is that people don't even agree on definitions, and effective communication is over before it begins.

Edit: I feel like I want to respond to almost every comment so far, and on second thought, I'm just going to let it go and stop myself here
