Mobile game Mario Kart Tour is a decent new way to play the iconic series on your smart device, but even with its newly improved control layout, some players just can't be doing with its touchscreen interface.
If you've grown up playing Mario Kart on your favourite consoles we guess this is pretty understandable, but what if you could use a more traditional controller setup to enjoy the game? Well, YouTube user Did It Work? has done exactly that, hooking up a Wii Nunchuk to play the game in style.
If you remember our recent article about using a SNES Mouse to play Super Mario Run, you'll realise that the video below is from the very same person. Just like before, getting a Nunchuk to work with an iPhone isn't as straightforward as you might think, with specialist adaptors being needed that can not only connect a Nunchuk to your phone, but also offer full mouse mode support.
With all this in place, Did It Work? channel owner Niles Mitchell is able to use the Nunchuk's control stick to steer the karts and navigate the game's menus, all while using the Z button to select options and use items. Check it out in the video below (gameplay starts at around the 2:20 mark).
We'd take a controller over a phone screen any day, but what about you? Would you play Mario Kart Tour more if you could somehow use a Joy-Con to steer? Are you happy enough playing on your phone as standard? Let us know in the comments.

I'll think about it...
Interesting. The only changes I tend to make to this game are to play it with a Switch Pro Controller, no microtransactions, with 3 other people in the room playing on the same screen (preferably a TV) and when it looks and plays exactly like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. When I make those minor adjustments, this game is amazing.
@AJDarkstar PS4 controllers are amazing on phones give it a try!
@JohnnyC So what you're saying is, if it looks, feels and plays like mario kart 8 deluxe, you will think about it? Why not just play mario kart 8 deluxe?
I feel like a better method would be to put your phone down, and play any other Mario Kart game.
MK Tour is okay, but it doesn't compare to the real deal.
@AZD1222 That's usually what I'm inspired to do whenever I see an article about Mario Kart Tour.
That's kinda neat, but... na.
It drives me nuts they made an entire mario kart and haven't made anything new for the switch console.
Although it works a little. Mario kart tour is much better with your fingers
The lengths people go to be able to use some form of controller for their phones...it's almost as if full touch isn't great for gaming or something...
I tried MK Tour only because of the Mario 3D Allstars mission and I gotta say it’s a shame they focused on this rather than making MK 9 because Tour doesn’t look that bad and the courses are nice but the horrible controls just kills it... not to mention the micro transactions
@JohnnyC Mario Kart 8 is awesome. The 2 players split screen is awesome, but with 3 or 4 players on same screen, the frame rates are so low that you better off playing a slide show. It is disgusting.
But... Mario Kart cellphone edition manage to be even worse.
That is interesting but it doesn't make me want to play it again though
@abdias Erm... it plays at a solid 30FPS in four-player? Your slide shows are faster than your movies?
@abdias Erm... it's really not like playing a slideshow. I'd suggest taking either your Switch or your TV to be repaired if that's your experience. I play it single-player, 3-player and 4-player quite often with my family and it's great entertainment in any of those modes.
I guess there wasn't already enough shovelware compatible with Wii controls.
I'd rather just play crash team racing or fast rmx on switch
If there's anything I like less than mobile touch-screen controls, it's the Wii Remote.
@AZD1222 I think because MK8 is pretty dried up by now and Tour gets all the updates and stuff is happening there.
But I don't want to play on my phone. So whatever.
@abdias not sure what your talking about, I usually play 3p mario kart 8 and it plays fine.
I wish Mario Kart Tour supported gamepads, glad they implemented landscape mode at least.
