An amateur video game developer known as Dopply on Twitter has released reimagined remakes of the 1993 Phillips CD-i action-adventure games Link: The Faces of Evil and Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon.
The games were created in Game Maker over four years and feature the original assets. Here's a bit more insight:
"I developed these over the course of 4 years in Game Maker as an exercise to teach myself game development and fulfill an in-joke between friends. As an amateur effort, the programming got a little rough, but hey, it works, and I learned a ton in the process."
While these are "not 1:1 remakes", Dopply believes they "capture the spirit" of the original games. There are also some modern features - like widescreen mode, remastered mode (for less frustrating play), subtitles, improved sprites, unlockables, and apparently more.
Due to the "nature" of these games, this is the final version and there are no plans to release future updates. In related news, Zelda fans think they might have spotted a Link CD-i reference in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity.

Can't wait for the Switch version
Never thought I'd check these games out, but now I might. Should be hilarious!
Shame he used the original assets, now that it’s been reported on then it’ll be taken down. That’s the problem with fan games and remakes, any recognition means your work will inevitably catch the attention of the suits.
The greatest contribution of these games has been YTP. They nearly eclipse the source material from that weird a$$ DKC cartoon.
I have watched one of my favorite Youtubers play all the Zelda CDI games and I have to say that I don't think I will ever be giving these games a chance, remastered or not. They sure are fun to watch someone else play though!
Nintendo, please buy these versions and/or hire the developer to further fine tune these, then release them on Switch, please..
Those games were a joke. All the animation looked like ms paint and there was almost no gameplay as the cdi didn't use a traditional controller. It's sad that Nintendo gave up the rights and these incompetent companies didn't capitalize on one of the best licensing deals in history. Good riddance.
Well that's pretty cool.
@nessisonett He's smarter than that. By already releasing them for download--I literally have it on my PC now--it's out there and that genie can never be put back in the bottle. Also, he's not charging for it so there's little Nintendo can really do anyway, other than ask him to stop. But, since he's not doing any more updates anyway, he's basically won this little battle. The game is online, anyone that truly wants to play it will be able to--once it's on the Internet it's pretty much there forever--and that's end of that, regardless of what Nintendo says or does now.
Wonder what’s mentally harder - suffering through play of one of the CD-I games.... or making them in the first place? Anyone know if the dev team is still alive? They may have suffered spontaneous human combustion during development process.
I'm impressed he stuck with this for 4 years. If I ever stuck with any of my games for that long I'd probably have created some pretty great games by now. The current game I'm working on is all art assets for now, which I'm actually enjoying rather than the way I normally do it where I try to do everything at once and usually just hid a dead end and some point and then stop working on the game anymore, and I really hope I actually give it the time and attention it deserves to be realized as a full quality product. I'll probably ask someone else to do the programming and music though, because I'm a very meh programmer and don't have a clue about music. But let's see what comes of it....
I don't think Nintendo cares much for losing the CD-I market right now
Dopply is a name I haven't heard of in years. I remember when he and many others made YouTube Poops, good times.
@impurekind While he’s released it and nothing’s ever gone from the internet, the point remains that using the original assets gives Nintendo far, far more reason to take this down than if it just used the basic outline and was a remake from scratch. Of course, that would have taken longer than 4 years, especially in Game Maker.
@nessisonett Legally there's not much Nintendo can do if he's not selling/profiting from the work. He's just a fan that's using some Nintendo artwork to create a fun and entirely free/non-profit piece of fan art that he's sharing with his "pals". You can go cut out Mario's picture from wherever, stick it on a box, and give it to your pal too right now if you like--and Nintendo can't do diddly ****.
@impurekind Don’t get me wrong, I really don’t like the way Nintendo’s lawyers go about these things. I just don’t think he has a leg to stand on legally speaking when he has used copyrighted material and released it free of charge. The assets from the original game are still copyrighted.
@nessisonett Also, these games were made by Phillips, not Nintendo. About the the only thing Nintendo can claim copyright on is the characters which have resemblance to Link, Zelda and Ganon.
If Phillips cares enough to sue this guy, that would be a news story on its own.
And Nintendo threatening this guy would require Nintendo to acknowledge the CDi games existence.
Would you do that if you were Nintendo?
That sounds fun...thanks for telling how to download it BTW NL. Wouldn't want to hype up a project that I assume not even Nintendo will go after this time... @[email protected]
If this gets taken down it means it’s canon
@nessisonett The company who made the assets went belly up. Nintendo has no interest in even acknowledging its existence and philips definitely won’t care. I think it’s safe.
I’m only here for the memes and YouTube Poops.
Let's be honest, it was hilariously bad
"The games were created in Game Maker over four years..."
That's a lot of work and wasted time for a bad joke...
ThIs iS iLlEgAl, YoU kNoW...
@0blivion ^Like that?
This game always reminds me of the cartoon link, "excuuusssseeee me prinsess"" 🤣🤣
After that link never spoke again. Legend of zelda, The silent link.
So there's a chance for a PS5 version, right?
Well they can take it down, its already out there. Its good that everyone with a pc can now try these games. Actually they are kinda fun for few minutes with impressive graphics for the time like an arcade game. Good job
This is amazing, actually. The CD-i emulators are a massive pain to set up properly, so this might be my one actual option to play these. Greatly appreciated.
Smart of him to use the one property that Nintendo doesn't actually want to publicly acknowledge.
Unnecessary cease and desist in 5,4,3..
@Crockin Unnecessary complaining about Nintendo striking down piracy in 7,6,5.. Oh wait, they are already here.
I think I may be the only person who likeS Wand of Gamelon as I bought a Phillips cdI several years back to play Wand and the Laserdisc FMV games (and went through the hassle of fixing the timekeeper battery)
I do wonder how many commenters have actually played the games. CDi pad was basically a Snes pad minus shoulder buttons. Wand played just like Legend of Makai an obscure arcade game. Paint shop cut scenes where so bad they where good and game could be finished in 10 minutes in speed runs.
I played Wand far more then any of these current Switch shovelware that are constantly on these buy one for 99p got another 3 free.
Would Nintendo ban this? Probably not because it’s a cdi game and Nintendo would want nothing to do with the game
This is a great example of how all developers making free fan projects should go about things: Create your work until the point that it's basically complete, release it online so everyone that wants to access it can, then announce it and let them all know about it so they can in fact get to it, and then, regardless of what Nintendo does or does not do, whether it has any actual legal claim or not, it's already too late for Nintendo to put that genie back in the bottle.
Look, if you're trying to steal Nintendo's copyrighted work and profit from it then I say all power to Nintendo in protecting its legal rights. But if you're just making a free fan game and don't intend to profit from it at all, I say all power to the creators of this fan work and their rights to create such art and share it with others to enjoy too.
@Gwynbleidd Here's someone who gets it.
I'm...honestly considering downloading these. It'll likely be the only reliable/close way I can play these....erm...unique pieces of gaming history.
I downloaded these the second I found out. I loved these games back in the day - and I still do!
Yes, the animation isn’t the best, the voice acting is pretty bad, and the boss battles are a joke, but they are rather unique takes on the Zelda franchise. There are still some staples of the series in the game - requiring certain items for levels/bosses/enemies.
In fact, these remasters really do wonders for the game. No more slow gameplay and terrible input lag. Plus the remastered mode add some great Quality of Life changes that make the game feel so much better to play.
I recommend trying these games out, if you have never played them. This is the best way to do it. I mean, we are talking free here.
Not great Zelda games compared to Nintendo’s work, but still fun in their own way.
@nessisonett well the assets are owned by philips interactive media and animation magic, and i think philips doesnt give f##k about the remake so... ¯\(ツ)/¯
Downloading now - Can't wait to check these out!
Inb4 Nintendo Ninjas arrive using their Diemsie-no-jutsu! (DMCA Technique)
@doctorhino There's probably not one person that will disagree but obviously just being a Zelda means it is going to be talked about forever. Even if it's just in the reference of worst Zelda game ever, or plain nostalgia for a vintage video game system. I can't imagine there is a more talked about game from that platform, but haven't bothered to research it either.
@KingBowser86 EXACTLY. “MuH Boi, thiS PeAce is wHaT alL tRuE wArRiOrS sTRiVe fOr!”
@sanderev you just posted cringe
I hope they port these exclusively for the PS5.
@Dpullam lemme guess PBG?
I had these as a kid and loved them. Kids are stupid.
@PickledKong64 You are right!
Remember: if Nintendo DMCAs this, they basically admit that the CD-i games are canon.
@tseliot cdi is also famous for its library of porn games. The 3DO had its fair share as well, probably the last 2 consoles to have official full nudity games made by companies like playboy and vivid.
@Bizaster PeanutButterGamer! He is my favorite!
I HOPE HE MAKES LOTS OF SPAGHETTI
@Bizaster I'm actually one of those crazy people made a YTP based on the CDi games 😂 Good times!
@Shadow_Dancer Did we play the same system and games??
"The CDi gamepad was almost exactly the same as the SNES controller, minus the shoulder buttons" 😂 Yeah, it's only missing the most important and influential aspect of that particular controller 😂 Like, in all seriousness, the CDi gamepad is literally almost nothing like an SNES controller. It doesn't even have a start and select button, giving it fewer buttons than the NES. If anything, it was more akin to a Genesis controller, but even that is something of a stretch.
I've played the Zelda games (the side scrolling ones anyway), and they are horrible. Not even taking into considecutscene, legendarily awful cutscenes, collision detection was just a totally frustrating nightmare.
I hilariously remember needing to stab things people and rupees interact with them/pick them up. It was just a matter of horrible game design. The aforementioned lack of buttons made it so that there was basically one action button and that in order to open up the in game subscreen menu to select an item to use, you had to crouch + use the action button, which was beyond frustrating.
The constantly running out of items (combined with rooms that would turn pitch black without lamp oil) made it even worse, bordering on unplayable.
To be fair, I never played the one with a top-down view and I've heard that one is quite a bit better, so...I won't judge that one.
@Dpullam could you share a link? I wanna watch it from a good YouTuber as well. Cheers!
Just got trough Faces of Evil Remastered yesterday. The games aren't total disasters and actually an interesting part of the gaming history. While not amazing, I'd still give it a 6/10 on a good day. Worth preserving (well, at least in the remastered form, there's an option to play it like the original too).
@sportvater Yep! This is my first time sharing a link! Hope it works!
https://youtu.be/ZKOzqw83RVo
@Bizaster Very much agreed! I always get a chuckle out of his videos plus, he is more knowledgeable than he seems!
Whew, two less things I have to do then! Congrats, Dopply!
That said, I'd still love to see official remakes and/or ports of the CD-I games. There's also no reason why the events and characters from the CD-I games can't be folded into canon. There's already multiple time-lines, heroes, and lands.
@OstianOwl may have already happened.
And just like that, the links to download are gone. Looks like I've missed the window.
Besides the awful cutscenes/voice acting... i always thought these games looked really great for the time. The character sprites and scenery all looks like they were painted giving it a nice art style.
