Re: Hardware Review: Famicom Classic Mini

I did end up getting this instead of an NES Mini for Christmas, and I'm really glad I did! Awesome, I love this thing, looks so cool and I actually have no issue with the controllers on this (and you get two built-in).

Re: Nintendo Files Trademark Application For Eternal Darkness

dronesplitter

I'm fully expecting this to be on the Switch Virtual Console. Of course, I still own it for Gamecube and just played it the other day a lot, so I won't necessarily buy it ASAP when it hits VC. Still, for new fans, it will be wonderful to see this gem resurface and have a chance to shine once again.

Best way to describe ED - it's a tribute to the writings of HP Lovecraft and a very well done one, too. It isn't full of jump scares (though it slips in one or two, so watch out), rather the game relies on a psychologically captivating narrative, all the more unnerving as you progress through the mystery Alex is tasked to unravel. Her story quickly turns into a reliving of the horrific stories of individuals bound to the tome of Eternal Darkness, each driven nearer to the brink of insanity or in some cases to their untimely ends.

I agree that the stretching is bad, but believe it or not there are some weird newbies out there that actually love stretching old games to wide ratios. I have been dumbfounded by this myself, but at least that small group will be elated, lol.

Re: Eurogamer Report Suggests Nintendo Switch GPU Runs 60 Percent Slower When Undocked

dronesplitter

People who say they don't care because they will run it primarily docked anyway...that misses the point of this thing considering the handheld mode of it is what must shine for anyone who can weigh options and see that PS4 will beat it for value (yes, there's the first party loyalty part to think of, but then again Nintendo totally dropped the ball and bailed on Wii U, gave 3DS far better nods and quality for the money invested, etc. - that's not being loyal to their console fans so don't let them do it to you again).

Of course Japan will buy it, but that's a given. For the rest of us, this thing better have well developed third party games that have equal performance in handheld mode or it will be a low seller overall. I don't even trust that Nintendo isn't going to put out a true 3DS successor in a couple more years, leaving the Switch forgotten already if it isn't a giant day one hit.

Re: Soapbox: Nintendo, the NES Mini and Ongoing Stock Problems

dronesplitter

Because these are so cheap, overproducing by a little wouldn't have been a big issue. They should have taken the risk, as selling more of these and meeting the demand would probably help them out when they start pushing Switch with TV advertisements. Instead, people will just say "nope, not fighting the scalpers for another Nintendo, and it's not even Christmas..."

Re: AM2R And Pokémon Uranium Nominations Revoked At 2016 Game Awards

dronesplitter

Nintendo must be very salty about AM2R, still. Best Metroid game since Super on SNES, and a fan made it with just pure passion, not marketing buzz and hopes of easy profit. If you neglect your own IP, the fans won't suddenly give up on it like you did, they will take the reigns. I fully support AM2R, and the team that made it were not looking to profit from it, so it was an opportunity for Nintendo to embrace their fans for once rather than see them as mindless consumers to scold and shove back into their little box. Sega has worked with fans to promote Sonic - so stop punishing your most loyal supporters, Nintendo. There was no threat to Nintendo's right to copyright here, they just can't stand to be upstaged.

Re: Poll: The Wii U is Four Years Old, But What Is Its Legacy?

dronesplitter

I had to pick the gamepad as my favorite and least favorite. Why? Because a few games made it seem cool, like how they handled some of the games in Nintendo Land, ZombiU, and Wind Waker's quick inventory and maps. Had the video been higher resolution, the London Tour Bus and other sightseeing apps could have been amazing (but why not just make them free, like on MyNintendo?)

Unfortunately, the gamepad was a big negative overall. For every good thing it accomplished, it also seemed to turn off third party devs and even Nintendo would usually whiff on incorporating it intelligently into their games. I also hate that I can't change system settings or play stuff like NES Remix without the darn thing.

Re: eBay Reports an Average NES Mini Sale Price of Over $200

dronesplitter

@WilliamCalley Of course, that's exactly it. No need to purchase an extra for your buddies/uncle/sister/whoever. After getting a week (at most) from your NES Mini, you'll go back to your iPad and the Mini will go to that time capsule called the back of the closet, only to be found and enjoyed when some kid in 2070 unearths it and figures out how to make it work with his holographics head implant. Again, a few minutes later, he'll move on.

Total guess, but...odds are 90% of the NES Minis bought here on the 11th have been opened once, played, then the lucky day-one buyer saw dollar signs from the hysteria and decided to cash in like the scalpers and listed it as NEW NEVER OPENED SUPER RARE TOY on ebay.

After the hype has fizzled, these things will be treated like cheap junk by many people.

Re: Poll: Retro Delights and Stock Shortages - What Are Your Thoughts on the NES Mini Launch?

dronesplitter

@Phin68 I know that people tend to equate "found on the internet" to be the same as "available anywhere," but the truth is these games are not so easy to find.

For people that have a history of using shady, illegal sites to get warez and romz? Yeah, easy for them to find, but a lot of those people are bored with NES and SNES games, as they've had them for years and they are blasé about retro gaming now.

For everyone else, some of the games on the NES Mini were previously only easy to play by owning a real NES system and finding an old cartridge somewhere, like ebay or in the flea markets. There's also the fact that Nintendo is producing the original NES controller to play these, giving eager gamers that are just now falling in love with retro gaming the perfect storm of nostlagia.

Re: Limited Stock Brings Out the Inevitable NES Mini Scalpers

dronesplitter

There was a ton of buzz about this thing. Nintendo is just in over their heads (making amiibo, consoles, 3ds, 2ds, nes mini) and I think they like the extra publicity a shortage gives their products.

Everyone actually knew this thing would sell like hotcakes, even Nintendo, they just aren't going to meet demand in the first shipment because it's their SOP these days.

Re: Limited Stock Brings Out the Inevitable NES Mini Scalpers

dronesplitter

Unless Nintendo is beyond stupid, they will make more of these and the second/third shipments could be large enough to satisfy the ones that couldn't get it today.

My gamestop only got 5 apparently, but life goes on. These aren't even new games, it's not a limited edition system, and they are making profit off of each one they make, so just be patient.

Buying from a scalper is the worst possible thing to do!!!

Re: Feature: NES Mini Classics - Final Fantasy

dronesplitter

I'm rather jealous that Japan gets FFIII. Sure, the original is a solid choice and I'm happy it's on the NES Mini, but III is like comparing Super Mario World to the original NES Super Mario Bros. in every way except graphically, I guess. In terms of gameplay, FFIII is the best NES FF game and with SNES graphics, would be better than IV, IMO.

Oh well, Square never localized III (they did that 3D remake), so we get the original. FFII could be totally forgotten, wouldn't bother me, heh.

If you want to know why this series was so amazing, though, I think we need to give Nasir his credit, the guy was a genius at programming it
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nasir_Gebelli

Nintendo passed the guy up, big mistake.

Re: Small My Nintendo Reward Discounts Arrive in North America

dronesplitter

When you are using as much as 70 gold coins, why isn't the discount like 75% or, even better, a free game? Nintendo didn't think this thing through. I currently have received far more from this with just the free platinum stuff than my gold, which will likely expire with me getting nothing at all with gold.

Re: Rumour: Nintendo Switch Game Cards Limited To 16GB Size

dronesplitter

I sincerely hope the rumor got it wrong and that's the minimum size most big devs will use at launch, while others will want double that.

They could also start compressing stuff some, which I believe on PS3 some games didn't bother with compressing a lot of content to get it to fit since they had a ton of space anyway.

Point is, this won't be an upperbound.

Re: Poll: Nintendo Switch Delivers Single Screen Gaming - Will You Miss the Dual Screen Concept?

dronesplitter

Here's what Nintendo might be thinking:

Switch goes to one screen so that it can be the hybrid it needs to be (think taking the old GBA single screen but making it console-like in power and software, docks for regular HDTV play, and the portable aspect is there but not necessarily a huge focus)

Then, after a few years, Nintendo releases a new dual-screen device that is a 3DS successor. It will have glasses free 3D screen, lower touchscreen, obviously a resolution bump, can play a limited number of games directly from your Switch library without needing to pay again, and be cheaper than a Switch with much better battery life and a return to STREETPASS!

I know, it sounds weird...because that's not exactly a unified front for their devs to condense it all down to one platform, which was according to some the point of a hybrid. However, Nintendo likes to make money from the hardware and they can do that with this strategy as long as they are smart and improve how well all of this integrates across devices.

They will need to stagger hardware releases by a few years so that no one feels like owning one prevents them from seeing the value in owning the other (or some will just not care about the nicer specs of a home console and stick with buying handhelds, so expect the dual-screen handheld to do better in sales most likely).

You know, what I described isn't too far off from a rundown of what Wii U and 3DS were, lol. Of course, you had to buy everything separately back then, while the new way would unify the experience to the satisfaction of fans.

Re: Nintendo Switch Will Be a Single-Screen Experience

dronesplitter

I think Nintendo devs got tired of trying to make a second screen work like they were supposed to on Wii U. They have essentially admitted the gimmick was bad. Just look at what Aonuma said: "We realized that having something on the GamePad and looking back and forth between the TV screen and the GamePad actually disrupts the gameplay, and the concentration that the game player may be experiencing. You have your car’s GPS system on your dash. If you had it down in your lap, you’re going to get into an accident!”
