Re: The Legend of Zelda Custom Chess Set Now Available

dronesplitter

Call me crazy, but I don't like this set. I'd prefer for the pieces to be less character based anyway. I like armos as rook, though. I guess I really need both sides to use the same design for the same piece or else it bothers me to see it as different designs like this (king and queens can be unique, of course).

I guess this isn't something you'd really use for serious play, but then I don't collect sets just for display. I'd actually use it if I bought it.

Re: Review: Vaccine (Wii U eShop)

They should probably update the game to address some of these concerns and also consider a seed value you could put in to always get a certain layout in the game, that would be great to test out values and find a favorite setup to consistently play.

Re: PETA Calls Out Nintendo Over Inaccurate Portrayal Of Milking In 1-2-Switch

*Disclaimer:
No cows were harmed in the making of 1-2-Switch.

I suggest PETA keep putting pressure on government regulatory systems that can actually change these horrid practices in the industry and stop attacking a completely unrelated company. Seriously, we get you want attention, but sending off a letter like this still makes you out to be a jackass, and that's certainly counterproductive to getting a desire for change out there without making enemies doing it. Enemies that could have been allies.

Re: Guide: How to Farm Dragon Parts in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

dronesplitter

I just think Nintendo isn't one to straight up copy, so making the divine beasts not only look like the colossi but also play out exactly the same as a boss, well...

That would have been more disappointing than what we got since SotC on PS2 already beat them to the punch forever ago.

BotW's overworld is where they excelled where that game couldn't deliver.

Re: Random: What Happens When A Guardian And Stone Talus Upset Each Other In Zelda: Breath Of The Wild?

dronesplitter

I wonder if, kind of like the chicken swarm going after the last thing to damage it, the enemies like Talus also decide their target based on who damaged it last rather than just "always target Link" and if so, I only wish this had been a thing in some way to solve a puzzle in the game. Kind of reminds me of Eternal Darkness which had a way to make two monsters fight with a spell the game gave you. I know that Moblins can pick up Bokoblins, and bokoblins are often seen attacking the wildlife in this game, so it really sounds like they wanted the AI in the game to feel WILD.

Re: Feature: What Happens When you Play Breath of the Wild as a Multiplayer Game?

dronesplitter

I went into my bunker and enjoyed BotW completely on my own. I didn't want to do the gossip swap about game mechanics, because this was my experience and, for better or worse, I needed to do it in solitude to fully enjoy myself. Now I've seen the credits and done all main quests, now I will read around and absorb the plethora of small tips I somehow missed. That's fine, but as for the main adventure, I didn't want that to be influenced by how others were playing. It made for an unforgettable Zelda experience and I'm happy with it.

Re: Video: Digital Foundry Tackles Zelda: Breath of the Wild on Nintendo Switch vs. Wii U

dronesplitter

To quote the article,
"On balance, based on video and audio quality, the Switch version is the one to buy. But it's the narrowest of victories, with resolution the key differentiating factor. The improvements are surprisingly minor given the gulf in potential system power comparing the Wii U to a docked Switch"

If you're not sold on buying a Switch yet, the Wii U version is just fine, so buy it

@H_Hunter If they are like me, they are so blown away that the massive world in this game isn't just there to pad the game as a way to boast about its size, the world is the game, and so frame drops in a couple of isolated areas or intense weather (which I haven't experienced yet, just some rain) is easy to forgive. You can't start out in a direction in this game without quickly finding a quest of some kind to absorb all of your attention. The controls are perfect as well. Hard to gripe about some frame drops and not recommend this masterpiece.

Lest we forget, Ocarina of Time had a horrible framerate, and it has a higher critical rating to this day.

Re: Video: Digital Foundry Tackles Zelda: Breath of the Wild on Nintendo Switch vs. Wii U

dronesplitter

I'm playing it on Wii U, picked it up from the midnight release at my Gamestop, and I mostly play on my Bravia in my room. I tried switching to the Wii U gamepad off-tv mode and found the game a little hard to enjoy. The intense colors became a bit flat and dull looking, plus the world wasn't this massive bigger than life experience anymore, it was too small that way, so I'm back to the Bravia exclusively.

I haven't tried it on Switch but the performance (other than some bad drops in my first town) is fine on Wii U. Nintendo did a fine job optimizing this for both platforms, I'd say, because they did not want to deal with accusations of dropping the ball on purpose to sell a new system. Thanks, Ninty.

Re: The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Is Officially One Of The Best Games Of All Time

dronesplitter

@Einherjar
Yeah, like I said, I'd be surprised if it wasn't all handcrafted, but then I look at this game, then look over at Wind Waker, and I say to myself - Zelda is in far better hands with these younger devs who seem to have mastered the open world and all of the demands that go with it. I don't want to just keep praising this game so much until I have finished it completely, but it's hard to contain my initial reactions.

Re: The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Is Officially One Of The Best Games Of All Time

dronesplitter

So far, and this is going to sound like a cliche, but I'm BLOWN AWAY by this game. Nintendo may not be able to top this for a few more decades. They delivered a map that is not only impossibly huge, like add up all the 3D Zeldas that came before it and it wouldn't come close, but there's a ton of stuff to do! I have to wonder how people could make such a detailed map and keep track of all the stuff they put in this game, was there any procedural generation used? It sure doesn't feel like it, as the map has a ton of personality behind it. I was worried I'd get bored with a huge map, but all of that fear was gone after about an hour or two of exploring.

Oh, and I'm playing this game blind, baby. No guide will spoil this masterpiece, let me tell you. I really recommend all adults not depend on a guide with this game, you'll be glad you didn't ruin the experience by looking up where to go and where certain weapons or equipment can be found early.

Re: Review: 1-2-Switch (Switch)

dronesplitter

Just imagine how awful this launch would be without Zelda. You'd have people forcing a smile as they tell their friends how in love they are with Mime School for Misfits, I mean 1-2-Switch.

Re: Bill Trinen on the Addition of DLC to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

dronesplitter

Except they have things like a hard mode and map feature locked up with the real extra content (new story) so it's a cheap tactic to take stuff that could/should have been in the base game and use it to lure you into slapping an extra $19.99 down to get the full experience.

If the hard mode turns out to be something rather major like remixed content and not something like a mirror mode with double damage, then I'll feel at least a little bit better about paying extra for it, perhaps still slightly irked, though. DLC is just a horrible precedent to set for a series like Zelda, so I'm naturally very against it.

Re: Retro: This Is Why We Should Probably Be Glad Nintendo Stuck With Carts For The N64

dronesplitter

Well, we do have virtual console now thankfully. As for N64 having cartridges, you admit in the article that this hurt the platform at the time, so presumably some games never got made for N64 and/or moved to Playstation which meant that work now suffers from the disc rot problem for collectors, heh. Kind of a catch-22, really, as carts were clearly bad for developers at that time in the industry compared to working with CD - so praising that choice now is merely a small consolation.

I realize, though, that VC doesn't cover literally all games for that console since only a small number see a release, and that's a shame. All this said, if the devs would just make sure they keep their source code safe, we'd always have ports as an option to get games released again, assuming those games were considered successes, which is why only some make the cut for VC...

Some software gets priority, just like preserving that Van Gogh is far more important (most would say) than making sure little Joey's diary about summer camp is never lost, you know? Them's the breaks.

Re: Talking Point: Lack of Nintendo Switch Details Close to Launch Made Wobbly Cam 'Leaks' Inevitable

dronesplitter

Pre-launch jitters, sigh, oh well, I don't buy at launch, but even if I were I wouldn't be getting this impatient over "I wonder what the eshop looks like, gosh."

Watch the jitters just melt away once people settle down to some Zelda BotW and enjoy. You know, I'm probably just old fashioned, but Nintendo is just showing some overconfidence that the product will more than satisfy their fans here - hence they aren't focused on tucking people in until March 3rd.

Re: Nintendo Confirms Expansion Pass DLC for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

dronesplitter

@MasterWario Total speculation, but the map feature could have to do with making the game easier in a way that they don't want normal players to access. Like, for instance, it could be a feature that reveals enemy camps on the map and put markers for other useful finds as well (crafting materials or the like). Or it could be something less cheat like, I guess, we just can't say right now.

Re: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Screenshot Confirms Returning Character

dronesplitter

Nice to hear Beedle is in BotW! He's the odd but lovable entrepreneur, or maybe he's actually a stalker, we'll eventually find out.

I've been avoiding reading much at all about BotW so that the game can be mostly fresh to me, but I'm glad I clicked on this article. I'm just so impressed with how great they made Hyrule look this time, it's truly gorgeous. I'm so hyped to finally play this game.

The main enemies seem so technically advanced, making one wonder if they are simply guarding these ancient structures or are they something else. This time, they seem a bit alien to the environment, I dunno.
