Another fresh detail from the IGN Portugal interview with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild producer Eiji Aonuma has been published, and it's one that's sure to be of interest to completionists.
When asked if there would be any alternate endings in the title, Aonuma replied -
Yes there is an alternate ending, there is a certain criteria you have to fulfil to see it. Essentially, you do some specific things and you'll see a different ending.
This wouldn't be the first time a Zelda game would have an alternate ending, as The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask had a different credits sequence based on your collection of masks, while Spirit Tracks' closing sequence would have subtle differences based on how you answered Zelda questions towards the end; also, Link's Awakening would feature a changed ending if you didn't die a single time throughout your playthrough.
IGN Portugal's full interview with Eiji Aonuma will be going live soon, and we'll report on any details that we find here. In the meantime let us know how excited you are about Breath of the Wild in the comments - it's not far off now.

But... but... the timeline... is it branching off again?! (JK I don't care that much.)
Great, another timeline split.
"Yes there is an alternate ending, there is a certain criteria you have to fulfil to see it. Essentially, you do some specific things and you'll see a different ending."
You have to own every Zelda SCamiibo? All 15 of them.
Jesus Christ, NintendoLife, wasn't this confirmed like 2 days ago? How late can you be
Man every article that is released about this game just gets me more excited! Roll on Wii U release because I am so ready to delve into this epic world and see what adventures I can have with Link!
I wonder if this is like a True Ending because normally the Hero would do everything needed in these kind of narratives...
Ah..ah...ah... The biggest Zelda ever made and I'll also have to play it at least twice to see everything...
Let me say my goodbye to 2017, I doubt I'll have time for experience much of it >_>;;;
Can't wait, first play-through blind, second play-through with a guide for the alternate ending. Is replayability a word?
Hm... similar with FF X-2 too.
Bad Ending, Sad Ending, Good Ending & Perfect Ending (True Ending).
I'm wondering if this is related to the possibility of just rushing straight to Ganon. If you fight the final boss as quickly as possible you get one ending, but to get the best ending you have to complete all the dungeons and follow the story.
Is this a Link's Awakening type of alt ending, where you see a gull and Malon in the sky, or is this an SMT type of alt ending, where something completely different happens? ...Maybe a teaser for Zelda taking up the Master Sword and starring in the NS exclusive Zelda game?
@SLIGEACH_EIRE That 8-bit Link Amiibo is going to haunt people in their dreams.
"Scrunch... Scrunch... Scrunch..."
The dark figure lurches closer to your room... It enters...
"Scrunch... Scrunch... Scrunch..."
The figure slides closer... It approaches your bedside, your body unmovable...
"Scrunch... Scrunch... SCLURCH!!!"
The figure looms over you... It's horrible visage comes into view... It is... A GIANT 8-BIT LINK AMIIBO...!!!
"SCLREEEEEEEECH!!!!!"
You awake, sweating profusely... You notice a certain dampness beneath you...
When u fight Ganon and die u will see zelda cry and run and say it was all for nothing! Than reggie pops up and destroy ganon. - the End -
@PlywoodStick The only way to protect yourself is to use an 8-bit Mario amiibo from the Anniversary.
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask had a different credits sequence based on your collection of masks
Wait, really?! I always collect every mask, bottle and Heart Container before taking on the final boss. Maybe I should do an any% run for a change...
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I'm gonna own them anyways, but I doubt that's what will unlock the alt. ending.
@The-Chosen-one

@BakaKnight: I feel your pain. I always try to 100% mainline Zelda entries, and with Breath's size I know I'll be spending quite awhile on the first play through. A second play through may have to wait a little while.
Though if there's a Hero mode/second quest, I would have ended up playing the game again regardless.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
The Wolf Link amiibo at least can be used for Animal Crossing New Leaf Welcome Amiibo to unlock Wolf Link.
@The-Chosen-one
Mr. Reggie is the Savior. He's probably stronger than Link. XD
Huh... This game just keeps getting bigger and bigger. I wonder how long the race to finish it first in the world upon launch will take. At least a few days, right?
"Hey, want to screw the timeline yourself? Now you can!"
@PlywoodStick The amiibo should have made the ReDead scream!
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Thankfully I have 6 of them
I could see some ending like Ghosts n' Goblins and Super Ghouls n' Ghosts.
Cool!
As long as the ending grants us an option to play through the game again with Japanese audio and English subtitles I'll be okay with that.. butttt IT SHOULD BE AN OPTION REGARDLESS!!
@Grawlog I would personally be ok with another timeline split though.
Cool! Would be another first for the series.
Wait... an alternate ending in an RPG???? OMG THE UNIVERSE IS GOING TO COLLAPSE WITH SHOCK!!!
-Cough- So, Breath of the Wild is getting a common mechanic in most modern RPGs? The developer usually just choses which ending is canon... causes no problem with timelines at all.
@amyr0se
If I haven't seen it, it's news to me!
(Seriously, thanks for posting NintendoLife as I only come here for game news. Get it sooner? even better
@PtM or maybe unlock that bathing scene again at different angles, maybe then we'll see... the leg-end of Zelda!, a lass, what a legendary feet that would be...
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Actually I heard you just need the two Samus amiibo. Aonuma probably figured somebody should do something with the franchise.
Here people are wondering about the green tunic, I'm here thinking how cool will the next iteration of the Goron and Zora tunic will look
Another timeline? Another split?!
It doesn't have to split any timeline, as most games that have different endings just pick one as the official version and run with it anyway. I'm very happy to see alternate endings in my Zelda, it was needed, IMO. That and VOICE ACTING.
The timeline is already jacked up. So if its indeed something that splits the timeline, its just par for the course.
Though I bet its a scene that has no real bearing on the timeline.
Isn't this old news? It's already been said you can run straight to ganon without doing a large portion of the story. If skipping the story gave you the same ending I'd be very suprised.
@allav866 in Majora's mask (i've done it four time ) each mask give you a piece of the ending that show you what appened to the npc that are involved with the masks. If you don't collect all masks you will get a shorter ending. If you fail to save termina and wait for the forth day you will see the bad ending where the moon fall destroing everithing.
For the alternative endings I think that one will lead to Twilight Princess timeline with Ganondorf sealed in the twilight realm and the other to Wind Waker timeline where the king had to seal Hyrule under the sea to stop Ganon.
@Dpishere Same, and I'm glad I'm not the only one on the wii u wagon. Also, from one Okami fan to another, nice icon.
Hmmm, could we finally be seeing a resolution for both split timelines? Can't wait to play this game.
@Frosty_09 Here, let me help you with that:

I'm sure it's a completionist thing...finishing a quest affects the ending somehow, something like that. Can't help but think there's an ending for defeating Ganon early, too.
@The-Chosen-one
Actually, yours is the alternate ending and the actual ending is...
Link dies at the hands of Ganon...screen fades to black...a mysterious figure walks into the basement of Hyrule Castle...walking to a sword, pulls it out of its pedestal...
The figure turns around...'My Body...Is Ready'...'I must destroy Ganon...with..... ....The NEW ...Master Sword!'
to be continued....

@Ed_Fairway Nah I am interested in the Switch but the Wii U version is more than good enough for me. As for Okami yeah I easily rate that game as one of my personal favorite games ever and if you haven't played Okamiden on the DS I highly recommend you do so. Shame we never got a Wii U sequel because the series would have been a perfect fit for the console.
It won't screw with the timeline, they'll probably announce which one is the canon ending.
Though, this gives me a reason to replay the game. Probably I'll do my first playthrough in English and the second one in (latin) Spanish.
I guess it's to get you to actually play the game, instead of heading straight to Ganon with a wooden stick.
@AlexSora89 What a coincidence! I literally just finished Neon Genesis Evangelion a few days ago.
On topic: This "alternate ending" basically confirms ANOTHER split in the timeline, doesn't it? Oh great. Here comes more theories.......
I hope people don't get to excited for this. It will probably be some background detail in the credits instead of something super huge.
This game is a 34 game launch line-up in one! Now combine that with on the go capabilities.
@Senpai_Bruh
The ending implied by the comment I replied to was so Gainax-level weird I thought an appropriate GIF was in order, and which ending is famous for being infamously weird? Cue the clapping scene from Evangelion.
Also, don't put theories and video games in the same sentence, thank you - the concept of gaming theories always brings to my mind Matthew Patrick and his obnoxious "nyah nyah Mario is mental" theory he always brings up.
Both endings will be canon they will probably just include some extra scenes.
@AlexSora89 Trust me. I was cringing the whole time I was typing that sentence.
@Senpai_Bruh

Me too.
@Frosty_09 Sure, no problem. Type the following (except remove all the spaces to make it work)

I don't really care about alternate endings, but it's a step in the right direction. One thing that puts me off Zelda is the lack of any post-game content (Hero Mode doesn't count as far as I'm concerned, since it doesn't advance the story or add new content). Even bringing back Master Quest would be cool.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE If so I'm all set in having each of these amiibo (well at least come March 3). But I seriously doubt that would be the case. But this should be cool, I can't recall any other Zelda games that have offered multiple endings.
@World Who knows, perhaps this could be added later. It really seems like they had to rush to meet the launch deadline. I'm fine as long as the main game plays well for now.
@Nico07 Yeah, I hear that. It looks like the main game is loaded up with stuff to do anyway, so it could be that getting to the end might be satisfying enough on its own!
While I personally think that BotW is already within a new timeline branch, this could either be seen as confirming that they're open to additional timeline splits, or could just be irrelevant.
The former would make a lot of sense... Ganon/Ganondorf has been killed in each established timeline now, and there's only so many times they can resurrect him without getting repetitive... but by adding new timelines where he hasn't been killed they make it far easier for him to return in future games.
The latter I'm thinking would be if the 'alternate ending' is just more of an extended ending... not changing the overall outcome (and therefore not splitting the timeline), but acting as a reward for those who fulfilled the required criteria.
Why can't there be an ending where Link gets to caress Zelda? A hero needs a happy ending too ya know. Also didn't The Adventure of Link has two endings? If you "Game Over," Ganon returns.

@Frosty_09 Much obliged, and no problem concerning the speed of your reply. I wasn't too quick to respond to you either, so we're even...
