Re: Unreal Engine GoldenEye 007 Tech Demo Gains The Approval Of Game's Designer

@ChromXsome It's the N64 game. You could play as Oddjob in the multiplayer only but he couldn't throw his hat. This game was followed by Perfect Dark, a new IP but very Bond-like and, IMO, a major improvement on the solid foundation that this game provided. They're both great, love them both, but PD had the better guns and enemies. I also rather enjoyed a futuristic setting involving aliens, but that may not suit some people.

Great game! The optional bosses are hard to find but worth it, totally worth it to beat them all. They're all really cool and probably better designed than the last boss depending on how you feel about the last boss fight (I feel that fight is more about style over substance, so not that satisfying to figure out and execute). A couple of the optional bosses feel like colossi from Shadow of the Colossus.

I honestly wasn't expecting the temporary removal. I have to applaud the dev for trying to fix something after it came to their attention it was a problem. Good for them, I like that move (though I also have no interest in the game itself, sorry).

Re: M2's Porting of Gunstar Heroes To 3DS Was Almost In Vain

The SEGA 3D Classics are a big part of what made the 3DS the best handheld ever, IMO. I really hope the sales were pretty good, although they apparently weren't good enough for us to get 3D Power Drift and Maze Walker in NA. It also seems they have closed up shop on making another batch...

I will enjoy all of the ones that made it over here, they are all amazing and I encourage everyone on the fence to go ahead and buy a few of the best so that you won't waver anymore on getting these. 3D Out Run, 3D Sonic 2, 3D Gunstar Heroes, and 3D Shinobi III are my top picks as gateway games to buying them all.

Re: BOXBOY! is Getting a Sequel

dronesplitter

I bought BOXBOY! recently during the holiday sales. Pretty great little game that actually pushes you pretty hard near the end with the puzzles (if you want to get the collectibles). I hope the sequel does some cool stuff to keep it all fresh, and I would love to see the graphics add some color in cool ways.

Re: 'Brain Training' Games Aren't All They're Cracked Up to be

The Nintendo games basically just said "see this? this is your brain on brain training, it's really active!" but they never said that would benefit you, like by stopping dementia. So, yeah, if Lumosity ever said something like that, they were making a medical claim of efficacy and that's something which can get you in major trouble.

I'm still keeping up with you, RK, though I may not buy everything you put out. So, yeah, I'm a fan and wish you guys well, but remasters are just hard to get excited about (especially on a handheld where the quality of remaster is usually not as great as when you see it done for console games).

Re: Review: Gunslugs 2 (3DS eShop)

dronesplitter

I ended up buying it while on sale and I find this to be a poorly made game. It seems made to appeal to mindless gamers, like a shallow, mobile contra/metal slug ripoff that throws enemies onto the screen that you just shoot...you have a life bar because there's no way to really avoid taking damage, there's too much crap happening for much planning. The levels all feel about the same with only the boss battles to break up that monotony. The graphics are also pretty poor, IMO. 5/10 at best, don't pay more than $1 and it will give you an hour of mindless shooting.

Re: Accusations of Plagiarism Directed at Popular Super Mario Maker Level Creator

dronesplitter

Not that surprising. Whatever gets certain creators popular, I'm sure they feel pressured to keep producing levels with good ideas. Look, unless you're just naturally prolific, you will hit a wall on good ideas after making some levels. Personally, I would never just play a level and steal their good work - it wouldn't fit with my standards. I'm not pressured by stars or popularity at all, so that's nice.

It is just a game...if anyone is making money streaming these, they should work out something with who they are getting ideas from if they don't want to be revealed to be frauds. Anyway, I suggest people go back to just having fun with this and not turn it into something scummy.

Re: Code Of Princess And Yumi's Odd Odyssey Studio Agatsuma Is No More

dronesplitter

I just know that I thoroughly enjoyed Yumi's Odd Odyssey after I gave it a real chance. It was a game that had trouble convincing me at first, but the more time I put into it, the more I saw how fun it can be. It's like a 2D Zelda game that focuses on Link using only his hookshot to solve levels and defeat enemies, and it should be played by more people. It also has an old school Nintendo hard difficulty to some of the levels (most aren't bad once you're used to the controls, but there are a few that needed a redesign to be reasonable for modern gamers to not rage quit them).

I just hope that somehow there will one day be more of those games. I just barely got into the series and now the current publishing company for it is gone

Re: Review: The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes (3DS)

Dang, 6/10...the demo had me really enjoying it, far more than expected. Seemed like at minimum a 7/10 (again, only speaking from my time with the demo). I see this is going to be one of those games where everyone gives it a second look and admits they were wrong to call it just "not bad" when it's actually very good, at least in time.

Re: Climate "Not Healthy" For Dedicated Handheld Games Consoles, Says Sony's Shuhei Yoshida

@Tiredman A large percentage of those added in to the mix, in my opinion, may not be reachable beyond casual style games. Nintendo can throw them a bone once in a while, if they want, but as a core gamer that wants far more involved gaming experiences I would hate to see that become the focus of Nintendo's gaming development. If that does happen, they will be embracing the fickle nature of casual gamers and throwing away the loyalty of hardcore fans. I hope they maintain a good balance but they seem a bit too tempted by the kind of numbers a popular casual game can bring in.

I won't care if they decide to have a finger in both pies (since my view is that there's really two pies to consider, core and casual) as long as one doesn't get all of the focus shifted exclusively over to it in the name of maximizing profits. After all, with more profit to realize there's no reason not to have both sides covered (that is until they feel one is dead to them completely, kind of like Sony is trying to say they see things now for dedicated handhelds - they're calling it dead when there's still demand for it).

Nintendo putting out their new mobile stuff, they better be careful. They may be luring people the other way, actually. Some may decide that whatever phone version of Zelda they get is enough for them and they don't need a more highly produced game like the old days. This would mean pushing people over from core to casual (which if that means more profit for Nintendo since the games are cheaper to make, this might actually take over their business model entirely). If that way of thinking really does catch on enough with all demographics of gamers, the type of mobile gaming I grew up with just won't appear profitable enough to invest in.

It's more than just the device you play on, though, it's the kind of games tops devs are working on that really dictates what we can play, and I'm not jumping on the casual train, ever.

Re: Climate "Not Healthy" For Dedicated Handheld Games Consoles, Says Sony's Shuhei Yoshida

dronesplitter

There's more options in general for gaming now, so it's no surprise the pie is getting smaller for those that were used to having a large piece all to themselves. New contenders are taking part of that share but from a gamer's perspective, this is all actually pretty great in theory. Competition is healthy as long as people help inform each other not to buy the crappy microtransaction stuff and think they're getting something good because they haven't been exposed to the real stuff.

Right now, kids are getting a taste of gaming with tablets and iphones, but a lot of them don't know how much better gaming can be once they try what Nintendo or Sony could offer them. You have to continue to fight to get your product out there and not let the glut of low quality games on the market outshine everyone else. You also shouldn't take the attitude of "can't beat'em so join'em" when the battle isn't even over. Sony is throwing in the towel too darn soon, sadly.
