@ECMIM I'm loving these, they are wonderful games each and every one. Thunder Blade has actually got me hooked more than Galaxy Force II, probably because I don't have to worry about running out of energy during a run, hahah. Based on my short time with them, I can easily see how playing these in the arcade left an indelible impression on people, as well as the amount of praise they all get even now from fans is substantial.
Reading the review again, though, these criticisms feel like they are just falling back on what gamers feel is the conventional wisdom regarding these arcade games and how they have been historically remembered more than giving it a fair shake. Why no mention of the boring story for Out Run? Or how the controls can be just as frustrating in Galaxy Force II?
Bottom line from me and then I say no more, this game has the same quality if not more put into it from M2 and the source material, IMO, is a great arcade experience you'll put hours into perfecting. I'm playing these Sega arcade games for the first time with the 3DS releases, by the way
@vonseux I realize you weren't referencing my post (and may not have read my post) but the 10 minutes is a decent estimate of a complete run, I think. I have a full run of Thunder Blade saved to a replay already (default difficulty, 3 star difficulty and 3 lives) and it's 9 minutes and maybe 20 seconds, IIRC. My full run of Out Run in my best replay (high score of 30,380,840) is only 6 minutes and 4 seconds.
Of course, it took a few hours of practice to do that Thunder Blade full run (hours for Out Run as well) and I had to use a credit in the 4th stage so it wasn't a single credit clear (that 4th stage in Thunder Blade is like the trench run of the death star, lol).
I've only seen just a small bit of the Special mode in this so far but it feels like a new game to me in a lot of ways and the entirely new section added to the game that was made exclusively for this release is a great reason to own this port.
Donjwolf already said what I think a lot of were thinking here as fans, and I agree with his sentiments wholeheartedly.
Did you know a full run through one of Out Run's routes is only about 6 minutes including the small part at the end and when you input your initials (and yet I've logged...about 15 hours since I bought it on my 3DS, wow). Thunder Blade has closer to 10 minutes for a full run, but, no, there aren't branching paths like Out Run which admittedly was a great feature but not necessarily enough to say that Out Run is worth $6 and Thunder Blade is not. Content really isn't the issue at all, it's whether or not you can enjoy the basic gameplay as much to keep at getting those high scores. A lot of gamers could make the "mistake" of buying one of these arcade conversions, playing once or twice, and then complaining that they were ripped off for only getting 30 minutes. In truth, these classic titles can provide an endless amount of fun for those that care to play them with the perfect run in mind - which you'll never actually do but you may get close to it and surprise yourself.
I bought this before the review but decided to see what NL thought of it and it's just as much fun as most of the arcade games that are part of these 3D classics releases, don't let this score make you think otherwise.
Also, the gyro controls are a novelty that I actually really enjoy. While I don't care to play with the gimmick of having the moving cabinet in view, I do think that moving the 3DS to fly through these stages at full speed is a great experience (not necessarily for your best score runs, but for when you're just having fun). Out Run should have included the gryo option as well but sadly didn't.
This game is a blast, check it out. 8.5/10 if you were curious how I'd score it, not that the score should matter much but this 6/10 here is not really consistent with giving Out Run a 9/10 (same reviewer too).
Second RGC game is better but this one is great as well. Star Prince is a lot better than Gun Duel and is the best game in this assuming you can enjoy a good shmup. I actually beat the RPG in the first Retro Game Challenge but it's mostly nothing but a very long grind (true to life for that era).
The challenge a day mode in RGC2 is a wonderful idea, I still play it daily because of that.
The Nightmare difficulty, which I unlocked yesterday for beating Hard, kind of hilariously makes the difficulty feel like Mario again because on that mode you have only one heart, so you can only take two hits before you have to redo the level. Hey, it does the job well, that's for sure. It's much more challenging that way and Bloo Kid 2 really seems built around encouraging you to come back and play some more instead of moving on.
You also unlock a boss rush and time attack mode when you finish the game once. Boss Rush is nice enough but the bosses do not (that I can tell) have any kind of secrets to beat them faster. They all share the same formula of avoiding the boss's attacks for a bit, then the boss will offer a way to damage him. You damage the boss three times and you win, that's it, move on to the next. If only the bosses had something about them, some cool secret unique to each to beat them faster that was a lot harder for the player to achieve, then I wouldn't mind each sharing the same basic formula but this isn't the case.
Bottom line, though, this game works well and I've fully enjoyed my time with it although I had to warm up to it in the beginning. Comparing this to when I purchased Jett Rocket II - what can I say, this game is actually fun and the level design trumps anything you would find in JRII. Nintendo Life happens to have both games at a 7/10 but Bloo Kid 2 is far better, IMO.
@ToneDeath I agree that it looks that way but after playing it I feel that the gameplay is better than just a copy. It does its own thing in a lot of ways, it just happens to borrow a lot graphically that makes you, at first, look at it and think "well that's just a blatant rip-off!"
I've been loving the gameplay in this $4 eshop game, and I wouldn't dare play this on mobile with touch input. I imagine that would be awful and wouldn't do it justice. This game has a great flow and is built beautifully to test speedrunners. I say pick this up!
I had 80 coins and chose to give someone a free grill off code, so if they reduce the games down to 80 or less coins, I will...sort of hate myself, lol. I thought it was safe to assume Nintendo wouldn't pull this but now I don't know.
The 3D looks great, but don't bother turning the slider on until you are in control of Rayman. Also, might as well turn it off when you're at the end of the level. This game doesn't seem to be able to maintain the great 3D whenever it shows a cutscene or puts a dialog box up. Ugh, why did this port have to feel this lazy, it was right there on the edge of being a solid port but no they had to rush it near the end or whatever excuse there is, leaving parts of it looking and playing great while the cutscenes and sound effects are botched. The frame rate can be buttery smooth in places, unstable elsewhere.
@Farpun I totally agree that these are the definitive releases of these games to date because the Super Scaler technology seems made to be presented in stereoscopic 3D. M2 didn't just include the great 3D, though, they deliver in every possible way on these ports. I have bought many of them, not all, but if we ever get a physical compilation here in North America I'm buying it!
@polivar4 didn't see this until just now but there's a lot of code doors in this game and I don't know if they ever have the same code, most seem randomly generated and you will need an upgrade to your prepper pad to get the right code. I think the final door you need the code for in the palace is always 6407, but I'm guessing you're stuck on a much earlier door so that won't help much, sorry.
Until these extra streetpass games are 99 cents each, I won't be getting any. The old ones should be heavily discounted by now but Nintendo doesn't do discounts usually so I'm sure I'll just never get to try them. Not complaining, just wish that Nintendo would understand that $1 from 1000 people sure beats $5 from 100.
I would consider DK64 but I'm not a fan of the collectathon nature of it. If only they would put it at a cheaper price for the first day, just to persuade people on the fence to just impulsively buy VC games when they first come out, sort of like how they made the Wii classics only $10 at first.
This game is worth picking up, don't write it off. If you can get it for about $15, you'll find the game is easily worth that for the generally fun levels and gameplay. The 3D is amazing looking and with practice you will thoroughly enjoy the modern Sonic gameplay (learn the fastest route, have fun perfecting it).
It's not the best Sonic game I've played and it's rather short, but it still gets the Sonic gameplay right as far as I'm concerned. The missions unlock extras but they are hard to unlock without play coins, which is the dumbest choice the devs made.
I like that they are getting around loading issues with options like this but it's painfully obvious that Nintendo should have included a bigger internal drive. I love that it's easy to use an external drive but a 100gb internal could have made this easier on everyone, I think. I don't like the idea that I have to carry around this giant dongle attached to my console, I'd rather they find a way to include that on the inside (but I've heard Wii U has a fast disc read rate? at least there's that).
@SirQuincealot Yes, you surely don't have the time mechanic yet that has to do with seeing the future in battles. In general, you will find that battles get a lot more interesting once you're a bit further into the game. That said, though, I never finished this on Wii because I was getting bogged down with sidequests. My fault, though, and I'll eventually complete it on Wii U.
Got this for $5 and I'm enjoying it quite a bit! This is coming from someone that owns Kid Icarus Uprising and found that game to be okay but a little hard to control with stylus (but fun and also a shooter that uses the stylus setup like this).
Zombie Panic DX doesn't need you to rotate the camera or anything so it's a lot easier to play and the levels/enemies are what make this game a delight. It's just a very whimsical zombie game that lets you blow up a lot of stuff, no more and no less. For $5, I couldn't be happier with it. A 6/10 is not a fair score at all if you ask me. I would rate this about an 8/10 for overall fun and a good difficulty. There's nothing wrong with a game expecting you to replay some to get better and the arcade mode seems like a great way to practice those levels that kicked your butt in story mode. Also, you can pick up health and continues from destroying stuff, usually enemies that go by pretty quickly in the background.
I'm gonna go back to shooting zombie Santa and his elves now, see ya.
I might get this. The price is good and if it has a lot of levels...the review being so harsh is off-putting enough that I'm going to research it some more.
@Fandabidozi That's a little crazy to me, but that's how things are in the gaming world sometimes. Like, for me, I wouldn't have bought a Wii U without the promise of a new mainline Zelda game for it that's going to be open world. While there are some games for Wii U that others could call a must have, that's pretty much all I'm interested in along with DK Tropical Freeze. I'm sure someone would find that opinion on that system's library as weird as I find it weird to only get a 3DS for pokemon.
I just disagree with you there, then. It's a must play still because the Raid mode is different enough on 3DS, plus there's the gyro aiming and 3D to account for that the later ports don't completely cover.
@Kingrat, Revelations started as a 3DS game. You act like it was ported later, when in fact it was built for 3DS. I still consider it a must play for the system as the gyro aiming is great and you can't get that on the ports.
What's up with the spin jumping to attack Mother Brain? You have a diagonal aim, use that, lol.
The 3D in this was only minor, the real thing would be much nicer. I noticed there wasn't any depth to how the background layer looks when walking in Crateria (they would make that look pushed back if they ever do this). Also, something felt weird about the way the door was supposed to look when fighting Ridley, but I could have looked at it wrong since I was doing the eye method on my PC.
1. Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
2. Mario Golf: World Tour
3. Mario Kart 7
4. Resident Evil Revelations
5. Shin Megami Tensei IV
6. Super Mario 3D Land
7. Super Smash Bros. for 3DS
8. Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
9. Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D
10. Theatrhythm Final Fantasy Curtain Call
*Order is only dictated by the order in the voting list, not ordered by quality
If I buy this, and I might, I'll likely get it for Wii U. Doesn't seem like a game that 3D graphics would enhance enough and if I want a portable aspect, Wii U tablet has that covered.
I guess if there was one thing that disappointed me, it was that this game didn't try new stuff with Clive's gun. No new powerups? Heck, I barely felt that the gun powerups, with the same types as before, factored in to the gameplay as much as I remember it from the first game.
I bought this and completed it today. I had a lot of fun but boy was it shorter than I thought it would be. I was hoping for some kind of final planet to unlock to extend the game more (maybe make extreme use of your abilities in this world, like the ghost levels in Mutant Mudds) but it was over in less than three hours. It's a short but sweet experience and I'm glad I waited for the sale.
That homepass thing people do is far more convenient than this exploit but I suppose if you have the patience this is still a decent way to finish a puzzle if you aren't likely to streetpass often.
I still haven't bought Curtain Call. I'm just waiting to find these games cheaper as I'm not dying for them like some people (though they are good for what they are).
I'll only state that this new IP isn't the kind of game I play so that's why I probably won't be buying it. I reject the idea that no new IP will happen if people don't buy this, rather they might choose a different genre next time, which would be good if you're like me and do not typically enjoy turn-based strategy. This selling well will likely mean a sequel in the same genre so...
I'm glad this embraces a low price because it definitely looks good at $2.99. As long as it's at least 2-3 hours of content for the average player, that would be a good value.
Even those games you mentioned don't technically force you, you just have to launch the game without the wifi switch on, I believe. I haven't updated SSB since after the first update since I was tired of my replays not being compatible. I sacrifice the online gameplay, of course.
The only glitches I've experienced were the ones I wanted to happen. So far, this game is super stable as is. If a patch happens for North America, I'll just avoid downloading it.

If I buy this, and I might, I'll likely get it for Wii U. Doesn't seem like a game that 3D graphics would enhance enough and if I want a portable aspect, Wii U tablet has that covered.
Re: Review: Gunman Clive 2 (3DS eShop)
I guess if there was one thing that disappointed me, it was that this game didn't try new stuff with Clive's gun. No new powerups? Heck, I barely felt that the gun powerups, with the same types as before, factored in to the gameplay as much as I remember it from the first game.
Re: Review: Gunman Clive 2 (3DS eShop)
How anyone expected this to be bad, I can't conceive.
Re: Review: Xeodrifter (3DS eShop)
I bought this and completed it today. I had a lot of fun but boy was it shorter than I thought it would be. I was hoping for some kind of final planet to unlock to extend the game more (maybe make extreme use of your abilities in this world, like the ghost levels in Mutant Mudds) but it was over in less than three hours. It's a short but sweet experience and I'm glad I waited for the sale.
Re: Video: This Harmless Exploit Will Help You Grab All Those StreetPass Puzzle Pieces
That homepass thing people do is far more convenient than this exploit but I suppose if you have the patience this is still a decent way to finish a puzzle if you aren't likely to streetpass often.
Re: All Theatrhythm Dragon Quest DLC Set to be Free
I still haven't bought Curtain Call. I'm just waiting to find these games cheaper as I'm not dying for them like some people (though they are good for what they are).
Re: Review: Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. (3DS)
Re: 50 Pinch Barrage!! Offers Many Ways To Die, And It's Coming To The North American 3DS eShop This Week
I'm glad this embraces a low price because it definitely looks good at $2.99. As long as it's at least 2-3 hours of content for the average player, that would be a good value.
Re: Review: Rage Of The Gladiator (3DS eShop)
Hate that you can't see the crowd of people in this version. Why was that left out?
Re: Weirdness: eBay Trolls amiibo Fans With Gold Mario Tweet
For those smart enough to not buy from scalpers, just ignore it as you should. Anyone that likes throwing money away, opportunity knocks!
Re: Site News: A New Readership Survey Has Appeared
Finished it up - interesting questions.
Re: Majora’s Mask 3D Patch Irons Out Honey & Darling Glitch
Even those games you mentioned don't technically force you, you just have to launch the game without the wifi switch on, I believe. I haven't updated SSB since after the first update since I was tired of my replays not being compatible. I sacrifice the online gameplay, of course.
Re: Majora’s Mask 3D Patch Irons Out Honey & Darling Glitch
The only glitches I've experienced were the ones I wanted to happen. So far, this game is super stable as is. If a patch happens for North America, I'll just avoid downloading it.

Where's Zombi U 2?
