Last week, Nintendo’s Senior Managing Executive Officer Shinya Takahashi revealed development of Metroid Prime 4 had been restarted. The game was apparently not up to the required standards and Nintendo has now appointed Retro Studios to take control of the project. The downside of this is the delay, with the game unlikely to arrive anytime soon.
If you’re still not particularly happy about this decision to start over, our lovely video producer Alex Olney has uploaded a new clip explaining why you should in fact be pleased about Metroid Prime 4’s development being scrapped and restarted.
While this is likely to be the most devastating announcement Nintendo will make this year, we think the decision will ultimately result in a better quality game. Alex also believes it will prevent another game like Metroid: Other M being released and could result in an enhanced port of Metroid Prime Trilogy.
Watch our video above and tell us in the comments how you feel about Metroid Prime 4 development starting over.

Ok but in the thumbnail you look like you're going to die.
But wasn't Other M actually pretty good, despite how everyone acts like it was a dumpster fire?
@Fiyaball forgetting that voice acting are we?
At least Other M had someone with STYLE!

@Fiyaball Don’t listen to all the band wagoners, I’m a crazy Metroid fan and absolutely loved other M. Sorry Samus isn’t a silent bad butt. Oh no! She actually has emotions! I was actually able to relate to Samus and what she was going through, the game had good graphics, a great mystery, and I really liked the controls and all the cutscenes. The Ridley boss fight in the game is one of my favorite boss fights of all time. The voice acting is really not that bad.
@Lizuka First Person Adventure 😛
@SimplyCinnamon53 @DockEllisD @Fiyaball I enjoyed Other M, as well. The story was fun, and I thought it was interesting to visually see some history of Samus fleshed out. And those Ridley fights were good, even more so to me than the fight at the end of Prime 1
I think MP4 will end up doing a Breath of the Wild and be a cross generation release.
@OorWullie potentially. Funny to think that the next Zelda game is further developed then Metroid Prime 4, yet Metroid is all we can think about.
Call me hopeful, but I don’t see Metroid Prime 4 releasing after mid 2022. Based on the previous releases, new installments in the Prime series take about 2-3 years to complete. If some of the assets from the previous build are used, I would expect MP4 during fall or holiday 2021. Not too far away, but still reasonable.
Nintendo Life thought process:
“Huh... been slow news-wise this year.”
“Hmmm... Last week’s Metroid news seems to have upset some people.”
“Ooh... Let’s stick the obnoxious goofy guy in a twelve minute video and let him mumble some jargon for a bit.”
Nintendo Life readers:
“Man, sucks Metroid Prime 4 got delayed and there’s still no good Nintendo news this year.”
“LOL Alex. What a goof.”
Wait... Switch got a 7.0 update?!!?
***Checks Update***
Yep, still nothing majorly out of the norm from Nintendo yet this year.
@Zach777 Metroid news is still buzzing everywhere, and everyone’s commenting on it. At least Alex is entertaining to watch 😁
@SimplyCinnamon53 It's good that you enjoy the game, but you can't ignore the glaring faults that the game has. Just to name several, the game is notorious for going against any previous portrayal of Samus to the point of it not contextually making any sense. Her inner-monologue is riddled with self-doubt and a need for authoritative input to make decisions (this makes her seem weak, which doesn't at all fit her bounty hunter persona). To coincide with this, she rigidly follows orders to the point of only using her abilities when given permission. She also has severe panic attacks when dealing with a certain someone, which has never been implied with any of her other encounters with him. In addition to that, the controls are clunky with movement assigned to the directional pad as well as missiles requiring immediate IR input while restricting movement.
I would also consider myself a big fan of the Metroid franchise but didn't enjoy Other M after playing through the entire game - being a fan has no real implication for enjoyment in this instance. There's a reason that it is the game that is credited for causing the lack of Metroid games for all these years. It's ok to enjoy playing it, but there's no denying that the game is severely flawed.
@Level_Up
Agreed. I think he’s a riot.
I’d like to friend him on Switch and play him online sometime and see how he does.
only comment i made is anyone who got hyped for the game this year just doesnt pay attention to nintendo they never showed a single piece of artwork or any info besides hey we are making this. with that said i knew something was wrong with development for that one reason
Yeah, sucks that we wont get to play it for several years, but you have to appreciate Nintendo's QA. After the negative reception Other M and Federation Force got, Ninty wants to make sure Prime 4 is quality. Even outside Nintendo, look at the overhyped, disappointments like Fallout 76 and Mass Effect Andromeda, both games that either needed to be overhauled or more time in the oven.
As for why Retro wasnt working on Prime 4 to begin with? Im in the camp that believes Retro has been working on that rumored Star Fox GP game which is wrapping up development now. Just some speculation though.
Nintendo Life gave Metroid Other M 9/10
The reason people don't like Other M is the same as Skyward Sword. People fear what they hardly understand.
@Fiyaball as someone who put five hours into other M a year ago......no
@AlienX both games have a similar strain of incompetence, but I Iike Skyward Sword....other M is a beautiful display of the inept.
Other M is the only Metroid I played to 100%.
Other M is the only Metroid I've beaten more than one time (3).
Other M had many flaws, but it also had unique gameplay. The switch from isometric to first person was wonderful.
I enjoyed MP3, I'll buy an HD Trilogy, but I'd rather have something new and interesting then yet another, more of the same, over and over, why not yet again, first person sci fi space shooter.
Other M looked good on paper, but just didn't translate in practice. Was nice to not be in first person all the doggone time.
@Level_Up Actually I think we'll see a new Zelda game this year.
Based on Breath of the Wild, but more like Majora's Mask.
@Toshiro_Baloney nintendo didnt screw it up that was namco that messed it up reason why nintendo decided to go to retro studios to start prime 4 from scratch.
@PrincessBowsette That's not what's said in their video. Kensuke Tanabe and Nintendo's development team are both mentioned specifically.
I'm all for it. Pre-ordered back when Amazon used to actually reward pre-orders from Prime members with a discount
"It was a chunky monkey. I can't show you a picture of it."
-Alex
I’m happy Retro is involved with Metroid Prime 4, but I doubt MP4 had any risk of turning out like Other M, it’s a Prime game, they have a unique style to them, even the lesser Prime games kept the style.
That being said, Other M was not a bad game (neither was Federation Force for that matter), it was quite enjoyable actually, it did some awesome things the Prime games never could. It’s fast action style was sweet as.
It definitely had its faults, yeah the story was mediocre, but I had no problem with it, even “that scene” wasn’t a big deal. It could have made some more sense had it not been right after Super Metroid.
If it based on the manga, it could have made more sense, something they could still do.
But its controls were my biggest complaint, flicking the Wii motion to first person to shoot missiles was a pain.
But let’s not forget, this site gave Other M a 9/10 and Federation Force an 8/10 at the time. I feel both are a solid 7/10, but both still deserve to be called Metroid.
I’d still love to see a new Metroid game, in a similar 3rd person, action style gameplay, something Bayonetta or Vanquish like, what I’m trying to say is “get Platinum to make a Metroid game”.
Sorry But I liked other M
Rather than scrap the original build of Metroid Prime 4, they should have reskinned it as a Star Fox game. That franchise seems like the dumping ground for projects that Nintendo doesn't know what to do with and Star Fox fans seem to love literally anything you give them.
@JackEatsSparrows
Yeah other m was brilliant. A great control scheme and the level structure was a nice alternative to prime. Plus anything is better than those awful bounty hunters in prime 3. That purple one kept calling Samus 'Sammy' or something. Plus that default 'American' fleet commander, straight out of Halo but none of the warthog fun!
I'd take a trilogy for Prime one on the train!
Why the video? The reason was right there in the article's thumbnail.

@Fiyaball Yep, i absolutely love it. Aside from everyoen screaming " ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh what have they done to Samuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuus blub blub blub " They were actually trying to do some really inovative things with the game and it was meant to be a reflection back to the original famicom title. If people hadn't of cried so much i beleive we would of had an actual full 2D game by now. Watch the Japanese commercial for the game and a much different story is told. I thin k it looks great, it's fast and fluid and i have no problem switching between the control schemes. The lack of an analogue control optionb was an oversight but again if you watch the japanese commercial you will see the link for the D pad control.
@DenDen Yep me too, fantastic game.
@B-Locks Rightly so. They obviously didn't realsie eight was a number back then.
Yes. With all the great action games releasing on the platform, what difference does ONE less do? .. .unless you're not into Pokemon and all that Fisher Price stuff. Then there's only Bayonetta 3 and Mortal Kombat. No great open world's, no great tech showcases. I feel like they've reached a point where they drip feed us overpriced indies and 3rd party games, like the Switch is on life support. But Metroid Prime 4 was a true star. A chance to see a fps exclusive to the Switch. A true chance to see the machine shine once more. And now? Now there's a sad wasteland of 8-bit graphics and a slew of anime stuff aimed at children and virgins...
we might get a new zelda before this game
Alex, I really like you, I think you're an awesome guy, but my god the comparisons you make are really stupid (I'm sorry to the administrator if this word is prohibited, I don't know).
Just because you don't like Other M or Federation Force doesn't mean they're rushed or broken. Neither Other M or FF were meant to be a MP game, each one had a different idea of gameplay, just because people want another MP game doesn't mean that every single 3D Metroid game has to be a first person shooter. Comparing a video game that wasn't woking at a development level to games that actually work in technical sense and are not broken, is completely loiuhgfdfgyuio.
I want the original Metroid Prime game so much on the Switch!
@graysoncharles 'ninja gaiden with an arm cannon'
That sounds awesome.
If it means a better quality product, then I'm all for it.
@Fiyaball I liked Other M and I had never heard of a mixed reception for this game, so I just checked metacritic... 79/100 is pretty good. I think it is just Alex's personal tastes
WOW... Love all the love Other M is receiving in this comment section.
I loved all Metroid games to date... ALL. My lowest ranked is Federation Force, but even that was fun with friends.
Now I wonder, how many of us liked Other M and how many hated it?
I think there are more that liked it right now
@BrettAwesome zzzz another one goes to the ignore list
Well, I genuinely think you should not be pleased Metroid prime 4 was crapped. No reason though, you just shouldn't.
You are pleased that Nintendo did not release a below standard game. But are pleased that they are releasing an old Metro game which will be below today's Switch standard, but at full price.
@Fiyaball plenty of games are. After FFXIII, perhaps one of the most fan-maligned flagship in its series, ended up being one of my favourites in practice, I treat such buzz as white noise - if not as an outright recommendation at times. And what I've glimpsed of Other M so far has actually got me more curious about the franchise and Samus herself than many other entries I've come across. Certainly hoping for a port, especially since I'm not holding my breath for any Win1/Dolphin combo in advance.
So sad... I think other M is fantastic. I like the old Metroid games and those on Gameboy and DS and Metroid Prime, but the other Metroid Prime games are not very good imo.
I guess I am just to old, I like the original Metroid games. The FPS Metroid isn't as fun. I am looking forward for Metroid Prime 4, I do like the first one so I hope it will be good.
gutted it got canned & we now have such a long wait till this is released. hoping for that prime trilogy HD to get a release to keep us tided over. never played otherM.
Oh piss off! Metroid Other M was not a bad game at all. Sure, not the best Metroid game ever, but way better than a lot of the Wii library at that time. It took a lot of risks, some of which paid off more than others but it certainly wasn't a bad game. In fact I'd go as far to say that it was better than Corruption.
Other M is my favourite metroid game.
Prevent another M 2? Why? It's my favorite. And yes, i have played them all.
If they could make the gameplay a little better and tone down the drama a bit, with the new graphics now on the switch and all that. It could be very interesting for me.
Other M almost killed the franchise so im happy Retro is taking over again. But what did Retro do in the last years if they weren't developing another game?
@Rhaoulos
The places I visit consider Other M a crime against mankind. Not even a mixed reception, everyone just hates it.
@fafonio
Yeah...I was just really looking forward to a more...say...contemporary AAA exclusive that caters a bit more to a wider audience. Now that Zelda, Mario and Mario Kart is out of the way, all of a sudden there's just not that much left, is there? Bayonetta with no release window. Saints Row with...nothing at all... I mean, if you're not into all the overly cartoony stuff, there's not much left
I can't watch the video above right now, but I have to say I actually quite liked Metroid: Other M. In fact, I completed it and I have yet to finish any of the Prime games... although I am almost through the first game and plan to finish MP3: Corruption if I can.
The Prime series is amazing and has a high bar set for it. Nintendo is definitely aware of this. Personally, I'm glad that they admitted that they're having problems with development.
I haven't played Other M, but that'll change before too long; I managed to pick up a new copy for cheap. I know the game can be polarizing, but I'm curious enough about it that I wish to play it and gain my own impressions.
@Sandro89 Let me guess... you live in North Korea and Kim Jong Un never managed to beat the game? Also look at the comments. I don't see many of your "everyone" who hates Other M. Also also, people who complain are known to be more vocal than other people.
My guess is people hate Other M because they were hoping for another Prime.
@AlienX People are afraid of change.
My brother hates BotW because he got his butt handed to him too many times and never managed to beat any boss. He now calls himself a TRUE Zelda fan and only like clones of ALTTP and Ocarina.
People who hate Other M probably feel very special and identify as "true Metroid fans"
Other M story was so painful and cringe worthy. The gameplay was ok.
And yes, it’s better to restart than release a crappy game. But if Nintendo made Metroid a higher priority, they wouldn’t be in this situation. It will almost be a decade since the last one.
Also, many are commending Nintendo for their honesty. But wasn’t it a few months ago they were saying that M4 development was proceeding well?
@Urameshi Samus really doesn’t act that differently, this is just the first time we’ve really seen her talk besides fusion.
Other M Spoilers!
As for Ridley that’s a fairly good argument, but if you take into account that apparently the Prime games don’t happen in other M’s timeline it makes more sense. Ridley killed her parents, she has fought him twice and left him for dead on an exploding planet and here he is again! I think I’d have a breakdown too. And she follows orders rigidly because that’s how it works in the military. She wants to be allowed to stay on the station so she follows orders. I can see how the controls wouldn’t be for everyone though.
The thing that bothers me most about it, is that it will ultimately be developed for future hardware in mind since the delay will have to be so long, instead of the SWITCH for which it was promised and therefor will hurt sales of the game because a segment of the market will put off buying it to get it with the next hardware iteration. I worry that this will hurt momentum for the system a bit as well. Metroid was huge for me. My hype for the system was because of it to a huge degree.
There's no silver lining here IMO. This move HURTS the franchise and is a disservice for the game. They have put the franchise in a bit of jeopardy.
I think assurances that the game is coming for the SWITCH and with the SWITCH in mind is in order.
@purpleibby
Yeah I wish they would sell off the franchise. I think it would find a bigger fan base on other systems. It will be a decade between M4 and M5. That’s ridiculous for fans, but when lazy ports print money, why should Nintendo care ?
Metroid was the only title announced for the near future that I was really excited for on Switch.
@Lizuka I thought Other M was ok. Game play a bit too on rails, and the pointing at the screen function really took me out of the experience. My biggest problem though was the portrayal of Samus. They turned her from a badass to a teen drama, sounding needy and weak.
@WOLF13 Yes, Reggie said it just after E3, due to the absence of any Metroid Prime 4 news at the show:
"Rest assured, Metroid Prime 4 is still in development and proceeding well."
The first part was true, at least...
@OorWullie that was my exact thought as well. I see this game coming at the end of the switch lifespan, maybe even being a launch title for the next console.
@King-K-Rool Damn, I missed Reggie saying that! Dang Ninty!
Over the years my opinion of Metroid: Other M has lowered, but it is not a rushed game and is still a decent Metroid game. Comparing it to the Prime Trilogy, I would definitely rank Other M over Echoes and maybe even Corruption.
@Fiyaball
I also thought OTHER M was pretty good. A solid 7/10. I really liked the action focused gameplay. and when you switch to pointer controls by flicking the remote at the screen it goes into slow motion so you can get your bearings. You can also do a quick dodge while in first person. I like games that utilize a system's controllers in unique ways and this game did that. My only gripe is that the main campaign is way too short.
Another for: Other:M was good! The first person controls were frightful, and the story was iffy at times, but still a fun experience that I, like this website (once upon a time, evidently), would recommend. There was one ‘spot-the-clue’ part early on that nearly had me give up, but once you start earning power-ups and abilities (like all Metroids), the games really shines.
