Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (16th August)

charliecarrot

@tgt Demon's Souls is great, and I hope you end up getting into it!

If you do, I recommend trying out Dark Souls. The remastered version is on Switch and PS4. It's easily one of my favorite games ever, taking everything good about Demon's Souls and putting it in a world that feels connected (with shortcuts to both new and previously visited discoverable, giving it a metroidvania type feel). No other FromSoft game has matched the magic of the world of Dark Souls for me.

Re: Feature: 32 Games We're Dying To See On Switch 2

charliecarrot

You can already play every final fantasy from the first up to XII (minus XI, which is an MMO), so why not:

  • Final Fantasy XIII: Trilogy - one day they'll remaster and rerelease this trilogy, and everyone will go "you know it wasn't as bad as everyone says!". XIII still had a true party system, and the battle mechanics with paradigm shifts was certainly fresh and unique. Every battle (after the first few chapters) requires strategy and prep. I still stand by it being one of the best battle systems, though I think a combination of XII's gambits and XIII's paradigm shifts would be the ideal combat system. The story is actually really good and doesn't actually require reading the compendium to understand like many claim.
  • Final Fantasy XV - a bit incomplete with how they put important story into a movie and DLC, but a new release could include all of that (much like the royal edition includes the DLC at least). It's really a fun romp through an open world with a lovable group of guys. Not exactly what many want from a final fantasy game, but what it did, it did really well!

It would be great to have an upgrade for Dark Souls Remastered since the switch version was the least performant and least "remastered" compared to the original of all the platforms it was released on.

Re: Opinion: It's Time To Get Rid Of Fall Damage

charliecarrot

Personally I'm tired of popular games coalescing to the point where they all have the same mechanics, same controls, same possible actions. I want things to be different, and I want unique experiences. There's almost nothing in any game that I think should be in every game. If a game designer's vision for a game necessitates a certain mechanic, then I hope they can achieve their vision!

Re: Best MicroSD Express Cards For Nintendo Switch 2

charliecarrot

I'm going to wait a while and rely on the internal storage until larger sizes are manufactured and (hopefully) prices decrease a little.

I have my Switch 1 SD card mostly filled up, and it's 1TB. I imagine games on the Switch 2 will be larger in size on average than Switch 1 games (especially 3rd party titles).

I mean I added a 2TB m.2 SSD to my PS5 and we still regularly have to delete games in order to install more. It's not fun!

Re: Nintendo: Switch 2's Launch Titles Are "Sort Of" Genre- And Franchise-Defining

charliecarrot

@FishyS Everyone looks for different things, of course. For me, I've been kinda bored by Mario Kart. I've played every game since 64, and they really started to feel all kinda samey.

Mario Kart World on the other hand... Idk, something about having a sense of "place" really appeals to me. All I want to do is drive from one end of the world to another. I really like when games make you feel like you're somewhere.

Maybe hard to explain, but it's exactly what I loved about Wii Sports Resort - every game took place in a location on Wuhu Island, and you could see the other locations in the background. The flyover let you explore and uncover things. I love that they brought the island back for Wii Fit Plus and Pilotwings Resort because it was a character I had fallen in love with.

I also loved just wandering around Hyrule in BotW, seeing places off in the distance and going there to explore. The journey was the reward (and the occasional korok seed just a nice bonus).

I see the point about it being like other racing games that have a similar overworld, but the difference for me is that Mario Kart isn't Need For Speed - it's a Mario game made by Nintendo, so it's full of charm and character, not just some generic world.

Re: Switch 2 Game-Key Cards Aren't Tied To Nintendo Accounts

charliecarrot

It's better than a code in a box in some ways (but not by much) and worse in others.

Once the online serves are down and you can no longer download the game, it's effectively a worthless piece of plastic/e-waste.

But it's a worthless piece of plastic that has to be in interested into your console in order to play the game, unlike a digital download code.

Re: Switch 2 GameChat Choppy Frame Rate Explained By Nintendo

charliecarrot

It makes sense to me. I didn't even question it. You don't need high framerate footage of someone else's game in a tiny box on your screen. You get the information you need out of 15fps or whatever, saving processing power and network usage.

Though I hope if you do a full-screen screenshare, it lets you view it at a higher framerate.

Re: Nintendo Understands Switch Owners May Not Be "Ready To Jump To Switch 2"

charliecarrot

Well yeah. I already own my Switch. And I have about 50 games on it that I've never played (or only played a little).

I still haven't given TOTK, Metroid Dread, Mario Wonder, or any of the Switch Pokemon games a fair shake yet (hell I'm still working through my DS and 3DS backlog). I don't exactly need a new console just to play Mario Kart, especially when people will still be playing that for years to come.

That being said, I do WANT the new shiny console and I'll probably pick one up. But I don't need it, and most people will be happy with their Switch 1 for a while.

Re: Nintendo Confirms US Price For 'Switch 2 Welcome Tour'

charliecarrot

This is such a weird move. This could've been a piece of software that endeared people to the console and got them familiar with it. Everyone would've tried it out if it was preinstalled. I don't know a single person who would pay for it.

I will because I love Nintendo and quirky stuff like this. Most people won't know it exists.

Re: Talking Point: Zelda: Wind Waker Is On Switch 2 - Do You Still Want A WW:HD Port?

charliecarrot

It's unfortunate that it probably won't happen now. Nintendo doesn't like releasing competing versions of the same game on the same console. WW GCN will get people to buy the NSO Expansion Pack. WW HD might take away from that (or vice versa - why buy the remake if you have a NSO subscription?)

Link's Awakening was such a massive visual change that the existence of the GB version on NSO probably didn't affect the sales of the remake. WW and WW HD aren't so distinct.

Re: Best Xenoblade Chronicles Games Of All Time

charliecarrot

Xenoblade 1: DE on switch is a masterpiece!

I try to recommend anyone I can to try it out. Combat in these games is odd if you're used to traditional JRPGs or action games, but once it clicks, it's super fun. The story, music, and world is sublime.

Re: Nintendo Appears To Have Given Its Game Cases A Makeover On Switch 2

charliecarrot

I'm holding out hope that they look better in person because I do not like these renders at all.

Something about the giant red forehead with the tiny switch 2 logo, and the way the red banner bleeds into the red plastic along the side of the case... It takes the focus away from the game art, and kinda makes it look asymmetrical. Compared to Switch 1 cases which were translucent and didn't have much to take your eyes away from the beautiful cover art.

Re: First Impressions: Nintendo Switch 2 'Wows' Most When You Go Back To Your Old Switch

charliecarrot

@KBuckley27 "Last-gen" is a weird concept here. Switch is last gen, but it struggled with some of its own 1st party games! PS4 was last gen, and it far out out powered the Switch and its 2015 tablet specs.

So sure, all of these upgraded games could've easily run on most last gen consoles, but not the Switch. Switch 2 will give developers a lot more breathing room instead of having to heavily optimize to get stunning looking games.

Re: Bravely Default Is Finally Freed From Its 3DS Prison, Coming To Switch 2 At Launch

charliecarrot

Why why why is it a game key? I know that game could fit on a cartridge, easy. I thought the game key thing would be for huge games that require installs on other systems.

Also, it was my impression that game installs on PS5 and Xbox are mostly due to limitations of optical disc read speeds? Much faster to read from an SSD than a Blu-ray. That shouldn't be a problem with the fancy new Switch 2 game cards, right?

Re: Nintendo Expects You To Pay For Its Switch 2 "Welcome Tour" User Guide

charliecarrot

This should be a pack in. Reminds me of a boring, manual version of Astro's Playroom on PS5. That also showed off all the new PS5 controller features, but it was a super cute platformer with stunning visuals and memorable music.

This is a virtual manual. This should be free. Especially if the goal is to get new players acquainted with the new features. What a weird decision.

Re: Nintendo Drops Teaser Video For The Switch 2's 'C' Button

charliecarrot

I think it would be wild and super unlikely for a dedicated button in a prominent place on the main controller to be the "connect with your 8 year-old console" button.

I mean, Nintendo has made some outlandish choices in the past, but I'll be shocked if that's what the C button actually does. Maybe that's one of the possibilities and it's a more general purpose "connect" button like others have pointed out.

But using your old switch as a Wii U style gamepad is so niche and wouldn't end up being used for anything except to play the handful of Wii U games that didn't get a switch port already, and maybe to play DS/3DS virtual console. Both of those use cases are too niche for a dedicated button, and little to no developers are going to make games that utilize a feature if it requires consumers to own a completely different console.

Re: Capcom Unveils Monster Hunter Wilds, Coming In 2025

charliecarrot

So excited for this! As someone who's played Monster Hunter since the PSP games, I'm super pumped to see something that looks new again. I'm hoping it takes more cues from World's focus on ecology and habitat - that was something that really drew me back into the series, and in my opinion, breathed fresh life into it after countless releases that were barely distinct from MHFU. I loved the mobility of Rise, but that game sacrificed a lot of the environmental world building that made World so special.

Odd to me that this wasn't announced for switch when the graphics don't look super improved compared to Rise (although I'm sure the number of monsters on screen at once is very resource intensive).
