Re: Nintendo Download: 2nd October (North America)

charliecarrot

My physical copy of Final Fantasy Tactics arrives tomorrow, but I downloaded a digital version on a different system so I could start playing. It has a really cozy PS1 feel to it, while having fully-voiced dialog with writing that transcends most other RPGs out there. It's truly a gem and I'm glad we have a modern version available.

Re: Super Mario Galaxy 1 + 2 Day One Update Out Now, Here Are The Full Patch Notes

charliecarrot

@The_Nintendo_Pedant That's generally how software development goes. There's always something else that can be updated or fixed or adjusted. They had a business-set deadline to get the software onto physical carts, and whatever patches they wanted to add probably didn't justify delaying the game (and maybe they discovered it after the deadline). QA is imperfect, and 100% test coverage is a lie. The ability to patch games over the internet after release is a good thing, actually.

This is my daily life with software releases. There's never a point where tradeoffs aren't made, and it was either delay the game, add a little update that people can download in 20 seconds, or just not patch it.

Re: ICYMI: Switch 2 Mouse Mode Is Supported In Super Mario Galaxy 1 + 2, But There's A Catch

charliecarrot

@Pillowpants ...or it's a fun way to play through the game in an interactive way with your partner or family member

I often get non-gamer friends to play Mario games, and the 2nd player mode is a great way for me to make it a little easier for them and stay involved while they work their way through it. To me it makes the most sense that the core gamer controls the 2P pointer for the casual/non-gamer who's actually enjoying the main game.

Re: Round Up: The Reviews Are In For Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 On Switch

charliecarrot

Was there this much complaining about price when Skyward Sword HD was released? That's still $60 new. What about Twilight Princess HD? I don't remember near as much contention around the price for those games. But 2 of the most highly reviewed games ever (both in the metacritic top 5 of all time) are released at a lower price for each, and everyone's suddenly concerned about the price? I really don't get it.

Re: Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade Director Highlights The Speed Problem With Switch 2 Game Cards

charliecarrot

Honestly, for games like this, you're better off owning the PS5 versions anyway. It's nice to offer a way for Switch 2 owners to play, but at the end of the day it's going to be a compromised version, and if you want to physical media for longevity and ownership, the PS5 discs give you that for an uncompromised version of the game.

I'd be a lot more upset if major first party exclusives are released as game key cards. But this is just a port of a game intended for more powerful hardware, so I don't really care either way on this one.

Re: Review: Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition - An Excellent Port Of A Timeless Classic

charliecarrot

I'm always a bit puzzled how the comment sections are full of people bemoaning the lack of WotL content. They always use that word, "content", "less content", "lacking content".

Do y'all even know what was cut? It's a couple extra classes and some cameo characters.

I'm just not convinced those things are as important as everyone makes them out to be, especially since the added WotL content was done outside of the original creator's intent and vision.

Re: Videos: Square Enix Releases New Trailers For 'Octopath Traveler 0' And 'The Adventures Of Elliot'

charliecarrot

The Adventures of Elliot is looking really good. The trailers are what sold me because just going off screenshots and the title of the game, this is easily something I might have overlooked.

I'm almost a bit burnt out on the HD-2D style (at some point they all start to blend together in my mind), but I'm happy to see Square doing more original titles with a lower budget.

Still not in love with the name, but lots of games with silly or generic names end up being really good (see: Triangle Strategy, Bravely Default). Just glad they didn't reuse that generic title font again on this one.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (16th August)

charliecarrot

@tgt Demon's Souls is great, and I hope you end up getting into it!

If you do, I recommend trying out Dark Souls. The remastered version is on Switch and PS4. It's easily one of my favorite games ever, taking everything good about Demon's Souls and putting it in a world that feels connected (with shortcuts to both new and previously visited discoverable, giving it a metroidvania type feel). No other FromSoft game has matched the magic of the world of Dark Souls for me.

Re: Feature: 32 Games We're Dying To See On Switch 2

charliecarrot

You can already play every final fantasy from the first up to XII (minus XI, which is an MMO), so why not:

  • Final Fantasy XIII: Trilogy - one day they'll remaster and rerelease this trilogy, and everyone will go "you know it wasn't as bad as everyone says!". XIII still had a true party system, and the battle mechanics with paradigm shifts was certainly fresh and unique. Every battle (after the first few chapters) requires strategy and prep. I still stand by it being one of the best battle systems, though I think a combination of XII's gambits and XIII's paradigm shifts would be the ideal combat system. The story is actually really good and doesn't actually require reading the compendium to understand like many claim.
  • Final Fantasy XV - a bit incomplete with how they put important story into a movie and DLC, but a new release could include all of that (much like the royal edition includes the DLC at least). It's really a fun romp through an open world with a lovable group of guys. Not exactly what many want from a final fantasy game, but what it did, it did really well!

It would be great to have an upgrade for Dark Souls Remastered since the switch version was the least performant and least "remastered" compared to the original of all the platforms it was released on.

Re: Opinion: It's Time To Get Rid Of Fall Damage

charliecarrot

Personally I'm tired of popular games coalescing to the point where they all have the same mechanics, same controls, same possible actions. I want things to be different, and I want unique experiences. There's almost nothing in any game that I think should be in every game. If a game designer's vision for a game necessitates a certain mechanic, then I hope they can achieve their vision!

Re: Best MicroSD Express Cards For Nintendo Switch 2

charliecarrot

I'm going to wait a while and rely on the internal storage until larger sizes are manufactured and (hopefully) prices decrease a little.

I have my Switch 1 SD card mostly filled up, and it's 1TB. I imagine games on the Switch 2 will be larger in size on average than Switch 1 games (especially 3rd party titles).

I mean I added a 2TB m.2 SSD to my PS5 and we still regularly have to delete games in order to install more. It's not fun!

Re: Nintendo: Switch 2's Launch Titles Are "Sort Of" Genre- And Franchise-Defining

charliecarrot

@FishyS Everyone looks for different things, of course. For me, I've been kinda bored by Mario Kart. I've played every game since 64, and they really started to feel all kinda samey.

Mario Kart World on the other hand... Idk, something about having a sense of "place" really appeals to me. All I want to do is drive from one end of the world to another. I really like when games make you feel like you're somewhere.

Maybe hard to explain, but it's exactly what I loved about Wii Sports Resort - every game took place in a location on Wuhu Island, and you could see the other locations in the background. The flyover let you explore and uncover things. I love that they brought the island back for Wii Fit Plus and Pilotwings Resort because it was a character I had fallen in love with.

I also loved just wandering around Hyrule in BotW, seeing places off in the distance and going there to explore. The journey was the reward (and the occasional korok seed just a nice bonus).

I see the point about it being like other racing games that have a similar overworld, but the difference for me is that Mario Kart isn't Need For Speed - it's a Mario game made by Nintendo, so it's full of charm and character, not just some generic world.

Re: Switch 2 Game-Key Cards Aren't Tied To Nintendo Accounts

charliecarrot

It's better than a code in a box in some ways (but not by much) and worse in others.

Once the online serves are down and you can no longer download the game, it's effectively a worthless piece of plastic/e-waste.

But it's a worthless piece of plastic that has to be in interested into your console in order to play the game, unlike a digital download code.

Re: Switch 2 GameChat Choppy Frame Rate Explained By Nintendo

charliecarrot

It makes sense to me. I didn't even question it. You don't need high framerate footage of someone else's game in a tiny box on your screen. You get the information you need out of 15fps or whatever, saving processing power and network usage.

Though I hope if you do a full-screen screenshare, it lets you view it at a higher framerate.

Re: Nintendo Understands Switch Owners May Not Be "Ready To Jump To Switch 2"

charliecarrot

Well yeah. I already own my Switch. And I have about 50 games on it that I've never played (or only played a little).

I still haven't given TOTK, Metroid Dread, Mario Wonder, or any of the Switch Pokemon games a fair shake yet (hell I'm still working through my DS and 3DS backlog). I don't exactly need a new console just to play Mario Kart, especially when people will still be playing that for years to come.

That being said, I do WANT the new shiny console and I'll probably pick one up. But I don't need it, and most people will be happy with their Switch 1 for a while.

Re: Nintendo Confirms US Price For 'Switch 2 Welcome Tour'

charliecarrot

This is such a weird move. This could've been a piece of software that endeared people to the console and got them familiar with it. Everyone would've tried it out if it was preinstalled. I don't know a single person who would pay for it.

I will because I love Nintendo and quirky stuff like this. Most people won't know it exists.

Re: Talking Point: Zelda: Wind Waker Is On Switch 2 - Do You Still Want A WW:HD Port?

charliecarrot

It's unfortunate that it probably won't happen now. Nintendo doesn't like releasing competing versions of the same game on the same console. WW GCN will get people to buy the NSO Expansion Pack. WW HD might take away from that (or vice versa - why buy the remake if you have a NSO subscription?)

Link's Awakening was such a massive visual change that the existence of the GB version on NSO probably didn't affect the sales of the remake. WW and WW HD aren't so distinct.

Re: Best Xenoblade Chronicles Games Of All Time

charliecarrot

Xenoblade 1: DE on switch is a masterpiece!

I try to recommend anyone I can to try it out. Combat in these games is odd if you're used to traditional JRPGs or action games, but once it clicks, it's super fun. The story, music, and world is sublime.
