People upset over this change have either forgotten or been totally unaware of the tons of balance adjustments made to the first game, or maybe they disagree with balance changes on principle.
@Oldstalk I haven't played Silksong yet myself, but I'm wondering if your Hollow Knight experience made it so you intuit the map and design more easily than you did on your first playthrough of Hollow Knight, so it feels more linear.
I pretty much always wait for sales, and DLC guarantees it. I’ll buy it in like, 3 years.
I was about to pull the trigger on Cult of the Lamb. Haven’t decided what to do about that. Dead Cells should be on its biggest sale ever in the near future.
Some of you guys are hopelessly idealistic. The standard has not been raised. Nintendo is not lowering its prices. Other indies aren’t likely to lower their prices. Good games regularly fail to be profitable. Survivorship bias is rife in the industry. No one would be talking about Silksong if it wasn’t the sequel of a famous game. FIFA makes a gazillion dollars. Nothing has changed, and that’s fine.
@Sabruka Yes. If both games were aiming to wander around in space, NMS is the winner, but Starfield was trying to be a first class RPG, which NMS fails miserably at.
@RadioDog me too. I’ve waited until now to buy Dead Cells, and I’m still kind of waiting for them to call it Dead Cells Complete, and a sale price. I’ll probably stop doing that when I’m 60 or so so I don’t run out the clock lol
How is this different from the stuff that’s already officially licensed from Nintendo? I mean you can already get stuffy’s, plastic play sets, and presumably lots of other stuff. I can see the quality on this looks higher, but is it really a strategy shift?
Mario and Wolfenstein are games appropriate for adults. But put some boobs on the screen and suddenly it’s only for teenage boys 🙄 People’s morality policing is so random.
@Fyrus92 I don’t think it matters too much. Someone up above mentioned fans exaggerating the importance of voice actors, and that sounds about right to me. It takes hundreds of people to make these games, and voice actors put in less work than the major majority of them.
@Dr_Corndog I don’t want to disappoint anyone, but there is no “Switch 2 situation” like one you’re implying. The situation is that it’s the most successful console launch in history, and there is one minor legal challenge in Brazil to a single practice, which will be at most amended by Nintendo if necessary.
@Goobplus “Anything with school in the title is at risk” sounds like just a random guess. We don’t know why Neptunia got pulled from Switch, only that it was due to “Nintendo guidelines,” and “school” isn’t even in the title. 100 Line had maybe two CGs blurred, which was minor enough that no one seems to care. Meanwhile, Ecchi Secrets and Hentai Girls After Party both released last month… correction: last week… so yeah — smut’s still clearly allowed.
@Goobplus considering Nitnendo had already allowed GalGun, Senran Kagura, Seven Pirates H and countless other titles, I don’t think they’re going to draw the line at cute anime girls with guns.
Is this the first free Switch 2 upgrade that wasn’t a launch-day update? I know a bunch of games got patches on day one, but this might be the first one rolling out after the fact.
Honestly, Dave the Diver doesn’t even need it. Fantastic game, but it basically has smartphone graphics and barely any loading—so I’m curious what they’ll actually improve.
@molkom I doubt they’re bots. There’s definitely a cavalcade of people waiting in the wings for any bad Nintendo news — eager to call the Switch 2 underpowered, claim it’s already losing third-party support, or declare the business model unsustainable. They’ve been unusually quiet since the successful launch (which I’m grateful for), but even a hint of bad news gets blown way out of proportion.
Clearly, publishers are just waiting for the market to stabilize. You can’t rush into something as volatile as everyone owning your potential product. Better to hold out for a more obscure platform with 12 users and a deep appreciation for ray tracing.
The important thing to remember is that the first Switch was an unpopular disaster, and if things keep going the way they have — which seems like a safe bet, given we’re almost 30 days into release — the Switch 2 will be an unpopular disaster too.
@SG2 Funny how taking time to defend a corporation is a waste, but moralizing on their behalf isn’t. Sticking up for the “little guy” isn’t automatically right, and listening to other perspectives doesn’t make someone a shill. None of us are changing the world with these comments, so maybe ease off the high horse.
@Misima my Switch had dropouts too, but it turned out that one of my TVs HDMI ports was fussy or maybe faulty. I just plugged it into the other port and dropouts went away. You could also try a different cable just to test it.
If people want to wait, fine: it is obviously true that the tech of next year will be better than the tech of this year But I already waited 7 years for the Switch 2; I’m not going to wait more. There will be more revisions after the next revision too, after all.
Glad I bought my Switch 2 day one because I am LOVING it. I don’t care to wait 1-2 years for minor rare niggles to be worked out. I had the original revision Switch 1, and this screen and performance is a massive step up.
@BuckStud I think all fan groups can be nuts, but I’ve noticed Sony fans are a bit crazier. Put another way: Sony fans spend more time thinking about Nintendo than Nintendo fans spend thinking about Sony.
@Jumwa Yeah, they've already moved the goalposts. I mean, they're not a hive mind (or are they?), but at first the launch would fail, and now it's "obvious" that the Switch would sell well to hardcore fans — but it won't continue to sell well a year from now.
The DF hate is wild. People are really stretching to paint them as biased—DF literally says “this is really good,” and somehow that’s proof of an anti-Nintendo agenda because it’s not pure hype? Come on. DF has consistently praised Nintendo when it’s earned. It’s like some people won’t accept anything short of full-throated, no-criticism gushing.
@Fiskern @abbyhitter A neat trick for reading these reviews is if you scroll up from the score past the pro and cons there are more words, like at least twice as many! Here are some of them:
“ Admittedly, that breadth of freedom does come at the cost of Fantasy Life's signature personality. The original game had just one line of exploration, rather than FLi's three, but that meant that it was much more fleshed out: the NPCs were dripping with character, the Lives had their own game-spanning plots, the areas were more distinct and self-contained, and there was just a lot more life in the world, partly because it didn't have a fast-travel system so you spent a lot more time in one area.”
@Dhaladog Try one of those screen protectors on Amazon that come with huge applicator trays to align and apply the protector like Spigen etc. I haven’t used one, but it seems like it should work. Also don’t worry too much, as in like a month you’ll forget it’s there anyhow.
@PinballBuzzbro Most of that isn’t evil, it’s just stuff you don’t like. And half of it’s hearsay or exaggerated. You’re mad about $80 games, not a moral crisis.
@jojobar Totally down to personal taste, but I’m with you. I bounced off RD2 pretty quick—it felt more like watching a movie than playing a game. Rockstar’s barely evolved their core gameplay since GTA3. I respect what they’ve pulled off, but comparing it to Nintendo is silly.
PC gaming ditched physical media like 20 years ago, and it’s doing just fine. Nintendo Switch games regularly hit digital prices comparable to Steam: yes, I’ve been tracking them for years. It usually takes longer because the games launch on Steam first, but if you can handle a bit of patience, the deals come. You’re welcome to yell into the void about quitting games when physical dies, but no one will notice. And I get it, that’s the point. I just want to reassure you: they really, truly won’t notice.
You are acting like Platinum just got hit by a meteor. A couple of well-known names left, cool. Every “visionary” was just some nobody until someone gave them a shot. You’ve all had coworkers who ended up being way better than expected, maybe even better than you. Talent doesn’t vanish when someone leaves; it just shifts. Plenty of amazing people are still at Platinum, and now they get a chance to be called “lead” and mythologized until they leave too. Relax.
Get this guys, I’ve been hearing about this console called PC and they’re planning on going all digital. Good luck with that, I say. It’ll probably be the end of gaming.
@kedireturns You’re giving the PS2 extra credit for succeeding despite its challenges, piracy, competition, format changes, but then dismissing the Switch’s success because of its own challenges like COVID, chip shortages, and no handheld competition. That’s not consistent. If context matters, it should matter for both. The Switch didn’t get a free ride, it thrived in a tough market with smart design and broad appeal. Like it or not, it’s matched, and arguably surpassed, the PS2’s legacy.
Wow, you guys are being so unfair to Palworld. It’s obvious the monster designs are totally inspired by ARK’s dinosaurs. And they clearly tried their best to avoid Pokémon comparisons—by not changing anything at all.
@Tott I don’t understand that either. It seems to me that Nintendo has enough checks and requirements on their own pre-orders that they could’ve let Canada in sooner. Maybe it’s not so easy though.
Pre-orders in Canada we’re supposed to open today. They pushed back the date to coincide with whatever the US date will be. The theory is they’re concerned US citizens will try to get the Canadian pre-orders and create a fiasco.
@Oracles_fanboi Oh no, how will we survive without eShop elevator music? Upscaled 4K, better hardware, backwards compatibility—but sure, let’s throw it all out because the store doesn’t play tunes. Totally reasonable take.
@Rhaoulos I feel like face recognition software has improved dramatically, so hopefully. Though sometimes they’re not properly trained on all skin colours.
I never got the OLED: still got the original Switch, and no joy-con drift, thankfully. The Switch 2 will be a day-one buy for me. If they release a revised model a couple years in, I’ll trade up. The Switch has been such a great console for me that I’m sure I’ll get my money’s worth either way.
@shoeses What exact ‘doom and gloom’ are you referring to? The fact is, a 25% tariff on Japan is being proposed, and Nintendo has already delayed the US pre-order rollout in response. That’s not speculation—that’s literally what’s happening.
Sure, there’s always a chance the final impact on pricing won’t be huge, but acting like it’s irrational to talk about it now doesn’t make much sense. This isn’t fearmongering—it’s just acknowledging that a policy like this could affect prices and release timing, and it already seems to be doing exactly that.
Planning to wait for price drops is fine. Pretending nothing’s going on isn’t.
