Re: Soapbox: Is Super Mario Odyssey the Best Mario Game Ever?

YoshiTails

I don't get the undiluted praise for Odyssey.

The level design is lackluster - there just isn't much craft or design to the levels. The Sand Kingdom in particular - all that open space and very letter clever nuance or structure.

I get that it's sandbox but for me once I got to 500 moons, I was done with it.

Mario 64 on the other hand, you wanted to get all 120 stars and some of the worlds were terrifically designed. There were still some dud levels and dud stars but overall I feel it's just a better designed experience.

With the possible exception of Donk City, I can't name a world in Odyssey that left a mark on me, that was special. Strangely, my most memorable aspect of the game was capturing and playing as the caterpillar in Lost Kingdom. Well that and the 2D Donkey Kong sequence in Donk City, that was pretty fabulous.

I disagree with the review. Massive fan of Banjo back in the day and it still holds up. The worlds in this are meandering and aimless - remember the zippy joy of running through the first world of Banjo Kazooie and getting all the jiggies? It was easy but also unbridled fun.

In Yooka Laylee, the Pagie challenges don't have much sense of flow - you wander around until you find a pagie in a cage and then complete a task that isn't always fun or natural.

Jiggies were never in cages - Banjo Kazooie had a more cohesive, buzzing confidence about it.

That's my impression so far - I think it's a 6 or 7 /10 at best.

Re: Super Mario Odyssey Is The Best Rated Game Of All Time

It's a fun game but far too easy - like "climb a tree — get a moon!"; "do a backflip - oh look another moon!"

You just trip over moons and it makes it far too passive an experience where you just ride along and don't think too much.

A fun ride but just not a patch on 64. I do love the homages though.

Sleeper by name, sleeper by nature - the reviewer took a full week after release to publish this review!

Anyway, I bought it cos I'm a sucker for anything cat related. It's relaxing and pleasant, a touch repetitive so a 7/10 I think.

Tried demo, feels like a blatant cash-in to me. Very simple, short levels. There's nothing wrong with it but it's not groundbreaking and probably get as much fun out of jetpack joyride.

Well in a sense you can call it a "swift decline", it feels more like a long, drawn out death, that started some time in 2015. The day the NX was announced was probably the beginning of the end and as a Nintendo fan this year has felt anything but swift!

Imagine if the Switch had been released instead of the Wii u. It would have been killer. Today with tablets less fresh, it feels like a risk. But a calculated one at least, Nintendo are determined to make a controller with a screen work - hopefully they shift at least 5 times more Switches than they did Wii Us.
