Re: New Videos Show How Fantasy Life i Has Been Beefed Up On Switch 2

Varkster

@Medic_alert Your whole argument is strange. The Switch 2 bolsters great visuals, this is coming from someone with a 4080 PC. I bought this game on the Switch and will upgrade on the Switch 2 because I love playing games away from my desk I spend a full day working at. You are undercutting a massive win for why most people would actually prefer the Switch version, and your counter for people getting excited over added features is "well it costs a lot to buy storage".

Yes. It costs a lot. We know. We're still excited for the game and the upgrade. What is the point of your argument? Do you just dislike people getting excited for something? Really seems like that's the real problem here.

Re: Nintendo Updates Switch 2 Backwards Compatibility List

Varkster

@johnedwin Send the third parties emails, I'm sure they'll assign a team to fix them.

The above is sarcasm, don't actually send emails.

These things take time, a lot of developers are focusing on new games for the console. I'm sure the majority of the games you own will run absolutely fine and if not they will get patched down the line, which is what this article is essentially saying.

Re: Round Up: The Reviews Are In For Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time

Varkster

@PeterTomlan86 The question mark just meant I didn't really expect the type of charm from this game, it honestly threw me a bit for a loop, I didn't think this sort of art style could have funny moments and heartfelt moments. It's surprising.

Can't really say much about the full picture where I'm at, judging by what I hear about the game it is very long and despite spending many hours so far, I don't think I got to the bigger moments yet.

I'd maybe watch a couple hours of the game just to see if you wanna spend the money on it. I was looking for something with a feel good, cozy atmosphere that isn't considered slop lately and I'm pretty happy with my choice.

Re: Round Up: The Reviews Are In For Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time

Varkster

Playing handheld on Switch, never played the first game.

Could not put the game down for many hours right off the bat. It has a charming story, some surprisingly funny moments and some surprisingly heartfelt moments I really didn't expect from a game like this?

The game oozes charm, also looks great and plays great on Switch, I have no idea why there are so many complaints. Yeah, the game runs at 30fps but it has been a stable 30 so far and I haven't noticed any insane compromises playing handheld.

Level 5 have already also announced they will be expanding the game with free content updates down the line and potentially also adding DLC, which is just excellent. They really needed the win, I'm happy to hear this game is overperforming.

Re: Randy Pitchford Defends Borderlands 4 Pricing Comment

Varkster

Nintendo have staff trained and bred for PR.

Randy's team unfortunately doesn't, he's not great at PR and it shows. He happens to be their representative, maybe he should let someone else on his team do this part of the job.

I understand people hate on him, but from his point of view I can understand a lot of the things he's trying to say. He wanted to create an ambitious game to surpass the mediocre third title, and they have also spiked up the budget.

Alongside this, instead of opting for a simple port to the Switch 2, they decided to build an entire version based on its architecture, which will no doubt be a showcase for the console. Guess what, that also means a significantly longer development period for this version of the game meaning a lot more money, yet again.

All of these are good things on paper, but when Randy starts speaking all of these positives imediately turn sour. Not only is the guy just not great at public appearances, but he is also notoriously despised by the crowds. All of this outrage is before we even have any confirmation that the game is $80. It's effectively outrage about a hypothetical at this point and another 'good' reason to dunk on Randy.

I personally hold nothing against him, but I do think he is doing way too much and needs to maybe walk away from this discussion to not further damage the upcoming game's reputation.

Re: Mario Kart World Was Originally In Development For Switch 1

Varkster

@Dinglehopper Don't see how, the game looks great and if anything the extended development time which is sitting at literally 8 years long would actually make a whole lot more sense for the asking price.

The people developing these games need to get paid, us internet dwellers seem to forget that these games are all made by people like us. 8 years of development time is an exceptionally long amount of time to work on a project and have no payoff.

I know this isn't the reason the game is priced higher, the game is priced higher because Nintendo decided to take lead on setting the standard following Sony doing it for the PS5. Also because Mario Kart is their biggest franchise. But let's be real, 8 years paying your staff to make a game is ridiculous, only a few franchises can afford this sort of gamble.

Re: Video: Check Out New Direct-Feed Gameplay Of Cyberpunk 2077 On Switch 2

Varkster

@Max_the_German There are comparisons floating around, I don't really need to argue my point as it's already pretty much proven fact. The Switch 2 in setting configuration holds up to the PS5 barring the resolution and framerate downgrade alongside some small decrease in population density.

There are many compromises on the PS4 version of the game which are not actually present in the Switch 2 version. There are also extremely high tech analyses out there by people who are more knowledgeable than DF who explain how the image quality is possible on something which in theory should be a much higher fraction less powerful than the current systems.

The evidence is there and all out on display, I felt the need to argue before but now I think anyone who actually wants to see what I'm talking about will, while others won't bother.

If you're unable to determine the differences between the PS4 and Switch 2 versions past the framerate and resolution, I'm not so sure you should be going on a graphics article and telling people what they should expect. It frames things you say as fact, which would be quite dishonest. This isn't me trying to be rude either, Googling a comparison will not take long so I'm sure you can figure these things out yourself if you're willing.

Edit: One note I forgot to mention, and this has been mentioned by others many times over before so it's kinda silly that I have to go over it again, this version of the game features the DLC which was outright not ported to the PS4/Xbox One versions of the game because CDPR deemed those systems not powerful enough to support the DLC, despite the large playerbase they had on those systems.

This isn't some sort of mind game, they said it how it was, Phantom Liberty is, in fact, a whole lot more demanding than the original game, playing it on a gaming rig with a frame count going will show this in the most populated areas. The fact that the Switch 2 version of the game supports the DLC as well should be quite telling.

Re: Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered Is Out Now, But Switch 2 Is Unconfirmed

Varkster

@UnbreakableAlex This comment is wrong on so many levels.

1. Oblivion (the original) released in 2005. Breath of the Wild released over a decade after.

2. Oblivion (the original) can be found on sale 90% of the time and purchased for a few bucks, the original Breath of the Wild is still sitting comfortably at $60.

3. Oblivion (remastered) is not going to include all DLC, in fact DLC packs are being released alongside it in a deluxe edition which costs above the base price.

4. As the user above has mentioned, you are more than welcome to pay the price for NSO which you get a heap of content with anyways and get the free upgrades if you already own the game.

I understand it's fun to spin your own nonsensical narrative out of Nintendo news, but please stop being disingenuous when making your arguments, at least try to be consistent.

Re: Cyberpunk 2077 Confirmed As The First Switch 2 Title To Use Nvidia's DLSS Upscaling

Varkster

@Medic_alert While I agree that here in particular DF may have been correct, DLSS could just have been added in a later build. CDPR made it a big point that the build was much older to highlight they have a much better result in the current version.

The rest of the complaints about DF are completely valid though. They have been on a strange rollercoaster since before the reveal to claim NS2 was not going to have X, Y and Z and now that it has all 3 of those things they are continuously making comparisons to the PS4 and claiming that this is just a "PS4 in your pocket", which, judging by literally every result and comparison we've seen, is completely disingenuous and untrue.

Digital Foundry should really veer away from opinion pieces, as I do think they have shown to their fanbase they know much less what they're talking about when they do not have their testing gear hooked up to the machines. Ever since they started making opinion content this has been a constant problem where their bias comes into play to convince people of misinformation. There are now countless people out in the wild convinced that Nintendo is overcharging for their console for "PS4 ancient tech" and citing DF as their source. I'm not going to claim this is entirely DF's fault that people are also just overall quite dumb, but they certainly didn't help the landscape.

Re: Assassin's Creed Shadows Switch 2 Rating Spotted Online

Varkster

@progx Well yeah, I agree. I'd say it specifically got worse with the uprising of the streamer mainstream where every streamer is now a bonafide expert in politics and economics, all topics video game related and think they know how to run a multi-billion business.

Man, I wish I was that smart so I could feed my 15000 fans a daily dose of brainwashing.

Re: Assassin's Creed Shadows Switch 2 Rating Spotted Online

Varkster

@IOI You must have been loving the Digital Foundry strange opinion pieces based on compressed footage and backtracking and damage control in the past few weeks, I'm sure.

Lovely content which everybody else reshared on their channel claiming well if DF said so that means it's facts.

YouTube has slowly become an echo chamber of trash, I have been steering clear of most negative content and have just been focused on the more positive coverage.

Re: Star Wars Outlaws Shows Off 'A Pirate's Fortune' DLC Ahead Of Switch 2 Release

Varkster

@Residentsteven Yeah, guess not every show is for everyone, I really like slow burn shows overall (I'm a big fan of LOST and From) but I understand not everyone will be into that.

On the topic of the game, I think the world in Jedi Fallen Order felt really well put together, levels didn't feel boring and like they had no purpose, there are many instances in open-world games where this feels like the case. It was developed at a time where things were looking grim for single-player experiences, where From Software, Nintendo and Sony's inhouse studios were pretty much the only companies interested in making big single-player games. Sony's studios have literally slowed to a stall where they released a single player game every 2 years, Nintendo had a lot of controversial releases that didn't appeal to everyone, and From Software just made one type of game.

The fact that Jedi Fallen Order released in the state that it did, from EA of all companies is a compliment in itself, and it probably clouds my judgement of the game a little bit. Sure, I'll admit it's not as great as something like the old Jedi games like Jedi Outcast and Academy, I still think there is a lot more fun to find in those games, but for me personally I would prefer an intricate Metroidvania over a Doom-like FPS anyday. Really depends on the player.

If you do enjoy sci-fi and games like the old Star Wars I'd highly recommend playing Prey, it's probably one of my favorite games of the PS4/XOne generation. Right up there with Half-Life 2 as one of my most memorable sci-fi FPS experiences.

Re: Star Wars Outlaws Shows Off 'A Pirate's Fortune' DLC Ahead Of Switch 2 Release

Varkster

@Residentsteven That's a shame, I actually finished Fallen Order and found it pretty great, it's a nice little mix of Metroidvania and Souls and action adventure with Star Wars. The sequel is better in some ways, worse in some. More exploration and more incentive to go out find things (unlockables), just with atrocious performance even on PC. I do suggest revisiting at some point, there is value in those games. I was actually hoping EA would bring them instead of sports, though I understand sports are their main push.

You will probably not find the same amount value in this game unfortunately, it's very bland and not exciting. It feels really low energy, which is really anticlimactic for a wacky Star Wars adventure. This is coming from a really massive fan of Andor, I think Andor is one of the best written shows on television, and that is a very unique experience which is very unlike Star Wars, but it has the incredible writing to back it up. Outlaws does not.

Re: Star Wars Outlaws Shows Off 'A Pirate's Fortune' DLC Ahead Of Switch 2 Release

Varkster

This one was the strangest game in the entire presentation for me, I don't know why Ubisoft haven't shown off another project in place of this one.

There was plenty of room to show another FPS in the reveal, the only other FPS there was Cyberpunk and I feel if the rumors are to be believed and Rainbow Six Siege is being developed for the Switch 2, that would be the game they'd go in with. It's a competitive shooter which would directly benefit from the mouse functionality.

Instead, they showed a game that had worse than middling reception from both critics and fans, the only positive note on it is that it looks kind of incredible on the Switch 2 going off the shown footage.

If you wanted to show off an action adventure, just go with your Assassins Creed games to be safe?

I don't know, I highly doubt this is the Ubisoft game that's coming out, I'm sure there's plenty more from them, just seems like an odd showing, even stranger that they weren't even featured in the third party rep talks on the Direct to talk about their upcoming support, it was sort of just flashed in a reel later in the Direct.

Re: Opinion: Oh No, I'm Not A Fan Of Switch 2's Mouse Mode At All

Varkster

@-wc- I'm sorry am I missing the part where you're paying for the mouse functionality separately? According to Nintendo this literally cost them nothing to add to the console, and it incentivized them to utilize the mouse in unique ways which you wouldn't see on PC games. I don't see how working with a concept we've been familiar with for years and adding functionality to it is a downside at all.

My point is I don't understand how this 'diminishes' the value of the product, when you're paying for the full package, and the full package clearly has tech on a level that would be the same price regardless of the mouse functionality.

Re: Video: Mario Kart World And Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Side-By-Side Graphics Comparison

Varkster

@mazzel Regional taxes and costs per country vary, $80 USD is the template, the rest of the countries are then increased and decreased depending on the market.

I am arguing the 'why' and not the economics study behind why things cost more in other countries.

I am also exhausted by the constant rage from people online without anybody actually delving in and attempting to understand why the price is higher.

Again, basing regional costs is asinine in an argument like this. The game is $80 USD advertised on their main page, their smaller markets in other parts of the world will likely cost more, but I notice you haven't mentioned the usual game price in your region. How much does AC: Shadows and other games cost? And if you compare AC Shadows, please do compare the digital price vs the digital price, and it will likely make a whole lot more sense to you.

Sure, you don't get your premium physical, but again, these carts are expensive to produce. I can't understate how expensive they are to make, this isn't a disc which is produced in 500000 factories around the world, this is a much more niche and complex technology. Nintendo Switch 1 carts at 32GB were around $17 USD to produce. This is a lesser version of the much more modern Switch 2 cart. I think the $10 price increase while does not sound great on paper, when you factor in that they're likely producing it at $20+ it suddenly accounts for that.

Re: Civilization VII Dev Likens Game's Switch 2 Graphical Performance To "Mid-Tier PC"

Varkster

@KoopaTheGamer I'm sure there will be accessories down the line which plug into the USB-C slot, but given what I've been hearing from various sources after their hands-on experiences, everyone is rather impressed with the mouse mode and don't think it's uncomfortable in any way.

The biggest takeaway I gathered was that your brain has trouble understanding where the buttons are at any given point because you're not used to holding the controller that way, but I think this will pass very quickly and become second nature.

Re: Video: Mario Kart World And Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Side-By-Side Graphics Comparison

Varkster

@Ladasta For the record I'm not attempting to discredit your feelings, I am also upset about the price, I'm actually not from the US, I live in Australia and the price hike here is quite a bitter pill to swallow.

That being said I just wanted to give some ideas as to why the price discussion is overblown completely out of proportion, given the price of those carts is actually notoriously expensive.

I still think Nintendo did a poor job explaining why and that's the real issue here. Most people don't understand, just point their finger and rage.

I bought the Switch 2 bundle so maybe I'm a hack trying to justify the money I'm spending on this console, but having actually sat down and thought about it I think it just makes sense.

Re: Video: Mario Kart World And Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Side-By-Side Graphics Comparison

Varkster

@johnvboy I agree there are a lot of smaller details that may be completely missed to the non-techy people, though I think the biggest difference here is the fact that World is open-world, and Mario Kart 8 is not.

It's just a completely different kind of beast than 8. 8 was really impressive for its time driven by strong art direction and no nonsense on screen, they really didn't waste a single spot on the screen and still managed to run the game at 60 (59 on Wii U) which was impressive for the time. You simply cannot pack stages in an open world in the same way as you can small tracks, it's incredible that they are able to plug this much detail into an open world game overall, and have it run at 1440p 60fps is all the more impressive, especially given that the rest of the game world is still being rendered at all times.

Re: Video: Mario Kart World And Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Side-By-Side Graphics Comparison

Varkster

@Ladasta First off, please stop spinning the narrative that the game is $90 USD.

It's $80 for physical, $70 for digital.

To add to what you have said, please note that selling a game isn't as flat as spending money to make it, then releasing it and making profit.

You have to pay for marketing, pay for the production of the physical cartridge and boxes, shipping out to multiple countries and retailers, then pay extra if you want your space to take an extra special place in the retail stores.

$70 for Mario Kart World isn't actually crazy at all, games have cost this much for forever now and the only premium you're paying is if you decide to go for the physical, which clearly costs more because of the higher speed carts.

Go online and try to find an SD card express, they are not cheap. The carts perform effectively on the same tech, sure they're smaller size (in GB), but they are large enough to warrant raising the price by $10 and have historically been known to inflate the costs for Switch games, and Switch games run on a previous version of said carts. Production of these isn't cheap, definitely not as cheap as discs, which at this point are becoming outdated technology.

Nintendo are also attempting to soften the blow by selling a bundle which almost everyone sane will buy which comes with a copy of Mario Kart World. This bundle literally cuts the price of the game for those who want it by almost 50%.

At first I was quite disappointed with the higher pricing of the game, but reading through the rage bandwagon as well as actually using my brain a little to think I have come to the conclusion that this isn't actually a surprise at all, and everybody is spinning this completely out of context (like yourself) which weaves a negative narrative which isn't at all true.

Please also note that this rule doesn't even apply to all their games, Donkey Kong Bananza is clearly at a $70 retail price.

I wanted to give my two cents as well as reply to your comment because I've been reading through this website these past couple of days and didn't want to contribute. There is an exceptional amount of people here who have registered to make a statement and tell others about how unhappy they are. It's highly likely these people were never planning to buy this system in the first place, it's just a way to join the rage and hate that all the normie YouTubers have been pumping out by the truckload these past few days. Switch 2 came out swinging with a lot of positive news, but at the end of the day the prices are what stuck the most.

Nintendo could have done a better job at communicating the 'why', but please for the love of god stop spinning things out of context and stop joining the childish 'riots' out there. This comment does not only apply to you but to everyone who has been spamming their Treehouse events. Spend energy better elsewhere.

Re: Ori Dev Asks Nintendo Fans If They Want 'No Rest For The Wicked' On Switch 2

Varkster

@Max_the_German Apologies for the double-post, I do also want to mention here that what I'm arguing is not whether the Switch 2 will outperform any other system in specs alone, we are not using consoles to mine bitcoin, we are using them to play games, so in the end what speaks for how much potential a system can have is the end-user experience, not raw numbers on a piece of paper.

This is primarily why I hold my opinion strongly on staying the hand on assuming how games will run on the console before we know more (at least by seeing the Direct in April).

Modern technology custom built by specialists in the scene, and arguably the most talented and most funded ones (Nvidia and Nintendo) is not going to provide underwhelming experiences, especially since Nintendo is well aware the Switch missed out on a good chunk of third party games during its lifecycle, and in their most recent investor meeting it was clear they were trying to remedy that. They even had a whole segment discussing how important third party relations are to them and pointing out just how well those games sold during the Switch's lifecycle.

Re: Ori Dev Asks Nintendo Fans If They Want 'No Rest For The Wicked' On Switch 2

Varkster

@Max_the_German A lot more games nowadays are much more taxing on the GPU than the CPU, and throughout development, especially on consoles which are lighter on the CPU, a lot of tasks were handled instead by the GPU instead of the CPU as a gateway to ease the CPU's load and play demanding games on those systems. It's sort of the integral part of the whole porting process.

I won't go too much into the specifics, there are hardware threads discussing this kind of stuff around the internet where this has been debated for months, as well as a lot of trustworthy game developers coming in and sharing their two cents who know a lot better than both you and I (unless you're a game dev yourself, I don't know). These threads are relatively easy to find if you know where to look for them.

DLSS alone is a major step up from the PS4, I think this one feature is really not to be underestimated, AI upscaling and frame generation really took off on the Nvidia side throughout this generation and they will no doubt push their newest tech onto the next big console that uses their architecture. For gauging just how far DLSS has progressed I suggest watching the latest RTX 5000 series reveal, they put up some flashy numbers, but the point they're trying to make is that the generative AI has made things possible in recent years that have not been 6 years back. Nvidia and Nintendo have had a very good relationship over the years and they were really proud of what they were able to accomplish with the Switch, since the Switch came out a lot of progress was made in the mobile gaming sphere.

The bottom line is my point still stands, I don't imagine we are capable of comparing hardware based on spec sheets alone without first seeing the end-user experience. If games like Flight Simulator (which by the way is a very CPU heavy game) are rumored for the Switch 2, I don't think there is a big worry about other games underperforming.

By the way, I'm not trying to argue in bad faith or anything, it's nice to have a chat about this sort of thing.

Re: Ori Dev Asks Nintendo Fans If They Want 'No Rest For The Wicked' On Switch 2

Varkster

@Max_the_German I understand that having a point of reference is nice for those who are not as familiar with specs and how specs are relative to the user experience, but I think the buzzword of it being 'PS4 level' is wrong and needs to be thrown out, it's far beyond on a base spec level as well as being engineered to be suitable for handheld, meaning simplifying the UI and adjusting for upscaling among other things. This is all based on the leaks, but then so is the presumption that the Switch 2 is comparable to the PS4 so this is fair game.

This is not to also mention that the chip is custom made by Nvidia and Nintendo and is not easily comparable to existing hardware, most definitely not decade year old hardware. It's a modern device and has been specifically designed in mind to accommodate the creators to have more freedom than the Switch provided them with, including third parties.

I guess what I'm trying to say here is let's not presume whether a game will run on the console (or run well for that fact) before we've even seen any games for it aside from 5 seconds of Mario Kart in compressed format.

Re: Patent Suggests Samsung May Create Its Own Foldable Handheld Console

Varkster

Why do companies that don't already have an established footprint in the gaming market keep trying to push their consoles? It has failed every single time and the companies that do this lose a ton of money. Every. Single. Time.

Why not invest your ideas and tech into already existing consoles, you can then make some money off the percent of sale but will avoid risking manufacturing a million deadweights that won't sell 100 copies?

Re: Nintendo's Mysterious Switch Online Playtest Program Is Now Accessible

Varkster

What's with the negativity on this site recently, this is like the best case scenario. It's something unique, weird and creative instead of testing boring features like voice chat and GameCube games.

Half the comments on here are just complaining or saying they're 'disappointed'. How are you disappointed with an unreleased product that you didn't even get or care enough to try for the chance to be a part of? Is everyone missing the irony in that?

Re: Final Fantasy Creator Considers Square Enix & Nintendo His "Hometown"

Varkster

I recently went down memory lane watching long form videos on Iwata, Itoi, Sakurai and Miyamoto.

There is a certain familial nature to Nintendo and how, over the years, they developed from these 5-man groups of university graduates to long term stays in the development business who still shared food on their free days.

It's a shame how corporate gaming has become, although this sort of thing is inevitable with a market as massive as games.

For the ones that passed over the years and for the ones still alive, I really wish all of these massive people in the gaming industry could just sit for a grand buffet. No video games need to come out of it, just the thought.

Re: Valorant Datamine Supposedly Uncovers References To Nintendo Switch

Varkster

Whichever console this is coming to, as someone who invested a good few hundred hours into this game a couple years ago, I can't see this being playable on a controller.

This specific type of shooter where you have to use precision aiming to tap headshots, I just don't see a controller being responsive enough.

Re: Talking Point: Is Knowing A Game's Ending Really That Bad?

Varkster

I'll be completely honest, when I first played the original Xenoblade Chronicles on the Wii, the game was taking a really long time to beat and during high school I really didn't have that much time on my hands so I looked up the whole 'movie' on YouTube just because I really wanted to see what happens, but didn't think I'd ever finish the game.

Nowadays, I refrain from looking up movies like that, because games with a great story especially feel rewarding to complete, because the rest of the journey is just as important as the ending.

I also think it's really difficult to 'get' an ending for a game without full context in mind, like I just mentioned the journey is a part of the story, you playing through the game is just as important as the last hour of it.

There are many games I can think of where I know exactly how it ends, but don't really care because out of context it doesn't hold much meaning to me.

Re: The Game Awards GOTY For 2023 Is Baldur's Gate 3

Varkster

Baldur's Gate 3 was by no means perfect, especially on release without the latter patches, but I don't mind the win simply due to it being the studio's first big GOTY win in history after making great games for years now.

Breath of the Wild had its shine, Baldur's Gate can have this one.

The next Zelda game will likely be on the GOTY front when it releases, though. Especially since you won't have all of the cool internet minorities spitting on the game for being a sequel.

It's a shame I won't be playing Alan Wake 2 for a while, simply because it's on Epic store (vomit).

Re: Baldur's Gate 3 Surpasses Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom As 2023's Highest-Rated Game "So Far"

Varkster

@Kirgo I'll have to download Divinity Original Sin 2 to see and tell you for sure, I spoke from memory alone.

I don't think the jump is big at all. Baldur's Gate 3 is certainly prettier, but it's not pretty by any means. I think it looks worse than Witcher 3 (different type of game but still) I don't think it can't be optimized well.

Unfortunately at the moment I'm noticing the weirdest freezes and frame slowdowns in places where they shouldn't be, the game isn't perfectly optimized but I think that's because the team is still quite small, there is a lot to learn.

It's a really ambitious project for one small team and it really shows in performance.

Re: Baldur's Gate 3 Surpasses Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom As 2023's Highest-Rated Game "So Far"

Varkster

@SpoonySpoons Oh god, I've played Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 in the past couple of years for the first time and found that I needed to do a sh*tload of research before I actually got to play the game. But then I found the real biggest offender to this: Pathfinder.

I launched Pathfinder after having played the Baldur's Gate enhanced edition duology on PC on Insane difficulty (I always play my games on harder difficulties because I find it's the best way to learn but the Son of Bhaal difficulty is way too ridiculous and unappealing) and just booting up the Pathfinder character creator screen I think has gotten me to contract some sort of disease. I had to sift through the creation screen for hours to discern any sort of stat-appropriate build and even then I created an awful character that couldn't get past one of the first sequences in the games.

If we want to talk about uninviting games let's talk about Pathfinder and other such PC-heavy games, especially strategic simulators, massive world-building simulators, etc.

There are games out there that are completely invisible to the console audiences because these games aren't targeted for console crowds. Baldur's Gate 3 is probably one of the most inviting ones compared to the rest.

Re: Metroid Dread Developer Has "Two Large Undisclosed Titles" In The Works

Varkster

I honestly don't think they should remake classics, either it's going to be a straight up remake which will get new fans upset because they will find the games limiting (reskin) or more likely it will introduce a whole load of mechanics that won't sit with the old school fans which will be a huge detriment because the Metroid fanbase is still quite small and those fans do matter when it comes to sales.

If they were to create another Metroid, let it be 6. Expand on the meaty skeleton you made with Dread, take in the criticisms, make the game bigger without compromising quality.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps did this perfectly, in my opinion. Very comparable studios in size as well.

Re: Baldur's Gate 3 Surpasses Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom As 2023's Highest-Rated Game

Varkster

@boxyguy From what I've played thus far Baldur's Gate 3 in terms of graphical fidelity isn't that much harder to run than Divinity Original Sin 2 (which is currently on the Switch). I don't see any reason that capable hands wouldn't be able to bring it over even to the current system.

I haven't played DOS 2 in about a year or so, but I can download it just to double-check, from memory it looked approximately the same. Divinity has slightly less detail in the environment and character models, but that's about it.

The issues running the game on the Scarlet might be a lot more in-depth than just "can we run this game at a good framerate", I'm sure it has something to do with the architecture design of the machine itself.

Re: Baldur's Gate 3 Surpasses Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom As 2023's Highest-Rated Game

Varkster

I'm 60h into Baldur's Gate 3 and up to pretty deep in act 2 and yes, it is that good.

Should you play it is a separate question entirely, if strategy RPGs aren't your cup of tea (like Divinity Original Sin 2) then maybe don't pick up this game.

You'd also have to be pretty curious about DnD lore to really enjoy the game. But yes, it has a lot of similar strength Tears of the Kingdom had. Very intelligent game where the developers give you a million tools to play with and you feel quite clever when you figure an encounter out, not to mention great replayability and a heap of good content and writing.

Playing it on hard difficulty as well which means I spend an extra amount of time learning the game's systems and strategizing which feels quite rewarding.

Don't think it will beat Zelda at the awards, but I honestly wouldn't be against it as the previous Zelda game already got the spotlight once.
