Re: Round Up: The Metroid Dread Reviews Are In

Varkster

Will never understand how certain people have enough time and energy to go on each and every single Metroid Dread and Switch OLED article just to let others know that it's terrible and a waste of money before having even tried either. Oh, and then arguing essays about it with nothing much to say but having loose and vague comparisons of other products.

I pre-ordered both and will be very salty if neither come on release date.

Re: Geoff Keighley's Game Awards Return To In-Person Events This December

Varkster

I may dislike the game awards and only watch it for the cringe moments and game announcements, but I do actually like Geoff Keighley. He is very passionate about games especially ones made by Valve, Kojima and Nintendo.

Seems like a good dude, honestly. Shame that his show is reduced to media fluff, it sometimes feels like a forced over-produced talk-show.

Re: Switch Exclusive Chocobo GP Sure Wants To Be Mario Kart, Doesn't It?

Varkster

It's odd to have this as an exclusive, this is the one title I think would benefit a lot from being multiplat since Mario Kart 8 is clearly a higher-tier title and it's going to be direct competition to anyone who wants to buy a kart racer for the Switch...

If this was on a system with only Garfield and Crash Racing it would at least have a slight chance.

Re: Digital Foundry Weighs In With First Impressions Of Crysis 3 On Switch

Varkster

@BloodNinja Oh, you forgot how this game looked and ran on those systems, it was dreadful.

Im with the belief that the Crysis games are meant to be played on PC because the visuals are a large part of their appeal, otherwise they are just very flawed generic shooters. Crysis 3 in particular with its rough jumps in quality. That being said, a good port is a good port. If people want to play Crysis on a handheld this is a good time, because I'd call you insane if you were to tell me these games could run on a handheld system a few years ago. The Switch is certainly miles above that generation of consoles. There's absolutely no way a PS3 could run Monster Hunter Rise as well as the Switch does.

Re: Video: Atlus Releases New Shin Megami V 'Bethel' Story Trailer

Varkster

@Ralizah Oh, I'm sure a lot of it has to do with deadlines and having a hundred different projects all at the same time, but this just looks a lot more ambitious than anything GameFreak has made for the Switch thus far and it's a shame because I don't doubt GameFreak is a very talented company.

Re: Round Up: Here Are The First "Hands-On" Impressions Of Valve's Steam Deck

Varkster

@Silly_G I own a gaming laptop which is portable enough for me to carry somewhere (although gaming laptops are pretty chunky). I'd have considered the deck if only for the fact that my Steam library is already full and I'd be able to at least play half of them on the go portably, but because I have the laptop I really don't see any point in it unless I just have way too much money on me to spend.

I think this mostly caters to people who already have a Steam account with a library of games like myself but the novelty alone isn't enough for me to invest into one, especially since it wouldn't be even half as powerful as my computer at home. That, and a lot of games I play on the laptop actually are 200% better with a keyboard and mouse which obviously is another downside to the deck.

I'm sure there are a lot of people that would invest into one but given the already huge popularity of Steam itself, I doubt a lot of people would go out of their way to buy one like myself. The appeal of the Switch isn't just that it's portable, it's also the exclusives and I'd imagine the sole fact that it's a "hot item" when it comes to technology.

A lot of my friends want to get the Switch having never even played a Mario game, the probability of the deck stealing that same demographic is in my opinion very low. Keep in mind a lot of people also find it very "cool" having the ability to simply take off your controllers and plug the thing into a TV without any extra stress.

This is all just my speculation, obviously, but in my eyes this thing is for a very niche audience in comparison.

Re: Review: Samurai Warriors 5 - Fast And Flashy Musou On Switch

Varkster

I grew up on playing Dynasty Warriors 4 Hyper on my very old crappy laptop which couldn't run anything and that's how I started playing the series, I didn't care about how grindy they were because I thought the characters looked awesome and going through a thousand enemies at once felt like it had so much style and spectacle.

A decade later I didn't really care much for the Musou games at all, Samurai Warriors wasn't grabbing me and even the Warriors Orochi series I waved off as "meh, not my thing", but lately Koei have really been stepping up their game with these.

I feel like since the original Hyrule Warriors the quality of these games have been rising higher and higher. When before, a Musou game with a "6/10" review from respected websites was considered a good enough game it kinda makes me happy seeing that they're rising above mediocrity in peoples' eyes. Not to mention, of course, the increased mass popularity of the series.

I understand this type of game isn't everybody's cup of tea, but honestly the crazy flashiness and over-the-top spectacle seems so appealing to me in a world where every AAA game is trying to be mega realistic with slow, methodical 3D movement and "relatable" and "deep" depressing characters. They visibly started dedicating much more care into their releases and it really shows with the amount of variety and creativity they put into their characters. I'm looking forward to playing this one, as well.

Re: Rumour: EA Is Planning On Reviving An "Established IP"

Varkster

Dead Space is a franchise I don't have high hopes in anybody reviving while bringing back what was great about it in the first place.

The current popularity of Resident Evil strikes a bit of hope for the Dead Space series having a focus on slower survival gameplay but I especially don't like the idea of "reimagining". The first two games in the Dead Space series aged quite well, even in the visuals department and Extraction was also great in its own right. Dead Space 3, as much hate as it gets, still had some pretty cool idea and expansion on the dark lovecraftian lore (I'm avoiding spoilers here).

If they're to reinvent the franchise I would rather them focus on a new story set in the same universe with perhaps some cameos from the originals. The story had a very definitive ending (depending on how you look at it) so it would be odd to continue Isaac's story on after Dead Space 3's DLC.

There MAY be a chance I'll look into it if the concept trailer would look like anything interesting. They're 'reviving' Mass Effect with a direct continuation after all. But hey, it's EA.

Re: Metroid Dread Tops Amazon's "Best Sellers" Chart

Varkster

@mattesdude Metroid: Other M in terms of gameplay was limited by its control scheme. Manipulating Samus while shooting and jumping and running in a 3D environment using just the Wii-mote was a bizarre challenge the director put on the team and I think it backfired.

Visually for the Wii the game definitely looked great but the map design compared to previous Metroid games was also lacking from my memory.

The story might need a whole essay so I'll just say that they had very stilted dialogue, at times many characters were awkward and a lot of it felt forced. They also wrote Samus as a weak character who is strongly dependant and dominated by male figures almost seeming kind of creepy, as if somebody on the team couldn't hold back some sort of fetish. This is the first notable badass female protagonist in video games and they decreased her to something much different especially with the re-introduction of Adam.

Re: Metroid Dread Tops Amazon's "Best Sellers" Chart

Varkster

Metroid really deserves a spot in Nintendo's highest grossing franchises, I really hope this game hits that mark and shows that people care. Samus Returns didn't sell all that well despite being a great game thanks to the Switch taking all of the steam at the time.

I'll bet that if this game does well then they might even put more effort into showing us more of Prime 4 sooner and perhaps put more faith in the franchise.

Re: Zelda: BOTW Sequel Might Give Off Majora's Mask Vibes, But It Is "Its Own Game"

Varkster

A game doesn't have to be less colourful and dimmed down to be dark, though. It's a common misconception that people seem to have that art style dictates how deep a game could delve into darker themes. We have games that literally use their artstyle as shock value when darker themes kick in. Look at Doki Doki Literature Club as an easy example.

This game could have darker themes and concepts which we are yet to see. We saw very little of the story so far so I think it's way too difficult to tell. He could also be referring to the story not being the usual 'Link vs Ganon' but could be entirely original with a little more nuance, which I think was a very big part of what made Majora special. There is also the time travel factor which both games share from the looks of it.

May I also add I have a gripe with the idea that "dark" means "better". A story in a game has to first and foremost be well written and serve its purpose as well as coinciding with the gameplay and world. I don't like DQ12 being announced as a darker title and I didn't like it when the developers said the same about this game back when it was announced. It creates a little bit of buzz on the internet but it serves no other purpose or actually tells us any net positives about the final product.

I also really like that Trinen is pointing out that the game will have a much more obvious distinct identity when they reveal more of the game. I thought the trailer made it very clear that it's a game that stands on it's own but it looks like some people on the internet stand to differ. It's almost as if he is responding to those people directly saying "be patient, you will see it's not just an expansion for Breath of the Wild".

Re: Roundup: Here's What Was Revealed In Nintendo Direct E3 2021

Varkster

Remind me not to check the comment section after watching an E3 Direct again. Some reactions here are absolutely disgusting, it seems like some kind of consumerist dystopia where every Direct needs to be like 5 XL McDonald's meals otherwise it's "abysmal" and "embarrassing".

You didn't get what you want? Sure. Next time. But calling this Direct embarrassing? Perhaps you might need to humble down a little.

Re: Best Nintendo Switch Survival Games

Varkster

Highly recommend Subnautica to anyone interested in survival games. It gave me a very strong sense of exploration and adventure which games like Minecraft couldn't accomplish in my opinion.

The port was also surprisingly competent as the game sometimes runs poorly on high end PCs.

Just be wary the game may get pretty frightening at times when you're exploring the deep ocean.

Re: Dragon Quest XII: The Flames Of Fate Officially Announced

Varkster

I don't like when developers boast about a 'darker tone' in a video game. It usually means they will add gore or some 'edgy' themes which really aren't all that deep or meaningful to understand in the first place unless you're perhaps below your teenage years.

In Dragon Quest's case especially I really hope they don't grim down the aesthetic and colour. Dragon Quest is a series that stands out as one of the real few colourful RPGs with an easily identifiable aesthetic left out there. This doesn't mean that Dragon Quest doesn't already have some mature undertones. There are plenty of stories in the DQ series where, when you look at them individually, do really strike some sensitive topics.

It seems they're going with the same approach for FFXVI, and to me that game is so far separated from Final Fantasy games to this point which almost makes it lose some of its identity in my eyes.

I do have trust in the creative vision behind the DQ team and hope they prove me wrong.

Re: Super Smash Bros. Director Masahiro Sakurai Reportedly Considering Early Retirement

Varkster

Early retirement for the man would be suitable, I think the moment you're self-imposing yourself to overwork to almost the point of collapsing on the floor is a sign that perhaps it would be best for your health to either retire or at least take an excessively long vacation. Health is a very precious thing to have and enjoy in the quickly passing years.

Of course he would be missed as one of the few very recognizable 'columns' of Nintendo. Reggie has left and we have unfortunately lost Iwata. Aonuma and Miyamoto would realistically be the only ones left (off the top of my head) and I'm sure both of them have considered retirement as well.

That said though I would still have loved to see one last passion project by him. Kid Icarus Uprising and Kirby Air Ride are great games and I feel it would be appropriate to see one last banger before he leaves.
