Re: Yes, Monster Hunter Rise Is Running On Capcom's RE Engine

Varkster

@Phantasm333 Resident Evil 7 in particular had a strong start and a lot of areas to explore but later in the game you end up going through a really crappy ship segment with refurbished environments and enemies. There was little variety in the game and overall after I finished it I felt there wasn't much to do in the end-game. I did enjoy the DLC though as bonkers as some of it was and I ended up getting all of the achievements on steam.

Resident Evil 2 Remake looked great, had solid voice acting and game feel but after a while I ran into the same issue (near end of the game) where it didn't feel fresh anymore and everything felt, again, like assets were being reused with no variety and enemies were becoming more of a chore than a threat. I ended up not even finishing the Claire campaign for this game because I simply got bored.

I'll give you a comparison with one of my favourite games of all time - Half-Life. Half-Life reuses assets even moreso than the recent RE games throughout the entire runtime of the game (and Half-Life is quite long especially for a shooter) but they build these assets up in strong level design and situations which feel more like a puzzle rather than you just shredding through the same bullet sponges. Think Assassin's Creed or Skyrim vs Breath of the Wild, same concept.

Overall both games weren't bad but I didn't think they were amazing or games of the year as some have pointed out. It was also disheartening hearing from my friend that they cut out a ***** load of content from RE2 in the Remake which would have probably enhanced my overall enjoyment.

I'll be honest I enjoyed RE4 and 5 more than I enjoyed Remake 2. This may be an unpopular opinion but it's my opinion. A lot of reviewers out there gave RE2 praise simply because of how great it looks and plays especially in the first couple hours but nobody really talks about the generic backside of the game where you're going through the sewer and garden part of the lab.

As for RE3, I haven't even bought it because I heard it's a disaster and barely adds any content worth playing. If I had issues with asset re-use in the Remake for the 2nd game then I most definitely don't want to play Remake 3. Maybe when it goes on a really big sale (around $15)...

Re: Yes, Monster Hunter Rise Is Running On Capcom's RE Engine

Varkster

@Ratking I don't think RE2 or RE7 were garbage per se. I enjoyed them both quite a bit, I did find them to be a little more on the bland side and at times it feels they played it very safe in some areas. After hearing continuous praise for Resident Evil 2 I had my expectations set up unnaturally high and did find myself a bit disappointed, but calling the games downright bad is a stretch in my opinion.

I think it would be cool for them to make original games for the Switch though, rather than seeing ports of PS1 and PS2 games. They've done plenty of those, maybe we should ask for a little more this time. Their ports were severely overpriced for ancient games and if they want my buck I think I want to see something completely new.

@MrBlacky I mean, a couple weeks back Microsoft came out and said there were no plans to have any other collaboration releases with Nintendo followed by the Ori director coming out and saying there are no current plans to port Ori and the Will of the Wisps to the Switch. I guess we're in an age where rumors are so far out there and common that big-name studios just come out and lie not to spoil the element of surprise. I actually like the fact that developers are contradicting rumors for this reason, I watched this Nintendo direct with 0 expectations and came out with a full smile.

Re: Yes, Monster Hunter Rise Is Running On Capcom's RE Engine

Varkster

After years of them making virtually nothing for the Switch but PS3, PS2 and 3DS ports I'm finally happy seeing Capcom put work in and create something ground up. It's honestly refreshing seeing 2 promising exclusives in development at the same time which both look fantastic.

This is exactly what I had in mind when I was telling people how instead of port-begging we should be asking companies for making games for the Switch specifically. THIS is what I wanted, and I hope to see them utilize this engine to make more games for the Switch in the future. If not Monster Hunter, this would be a great time for an Okami game or a special Resident Evil game. Since I'm on the topic of Okami, I think it's also a missed opportunity for them not to add Okami as a skin for your mount in Rise as pre-order bonus, but whatever.

Let's hope the amount of sales they gain from Monster Hunter Rise and potentially even Stories (which I don't doubt will be gargantuan) shows Capcom that people really do appreciate effort put into games on the Switch. Perhaps it will show other companies this notion too. Square Enix has a very tiny team developing games for the Switch, in contrast Capcom seems to be handling this with a lot of manpower. Good on them, honestly. I can finally praise Capcom and feel good about it.

Re: Nintendo Looks To Extend Switch Life-Cycle As Demand Looks Higher Than Ever This Year

Varkster

@GannonBanned I actually have a funny experience at work where nobody really plays games but when I pull out my Switch during lunchtime to pass the time some people stand around in shock at just how powerful and impressive a device of its size can be. Then they start asking a million questions which I don't wanna answer because I wanna play my damn game.

The people who complain about the specs of the Switch should really rather invest into a PS5/XBS or better yet a PC. The Switch is a console which can play big name games on the go. I don't understand the need of a Pro version of that when the system already holds so many merit points.

Re: Nintendo Looks To Extend Switch Life-Cycle As Demand Looks Higher Than Ever This Year

Varkster

@zool You can't apply simple maths if you're using broken logic. Sony and Microsoft don't even have an appealing handheld counterpart. The reason the Switch is doing well is because it's one of the most appealing gaming devices on the market to the average consumer with a strong exclusive lineup.

Most people don't buy a handheld AND a console of the same brand. Hell, I'm a major gamer and even I don't do that. I usually buy one console device per generation and stick with my PC for the rest of the games.

The Switch is sold out in most regions even at a higher price and worse deals than the PS4/X1 because people simply see more appeal in the system. Not because somehow the two 'halves' of the handheld and home console market have combined. Like...dude, what are you talking about?

Re: Estranged: The Departure Is A First-Person Adventure That Started Life As A Half-Life 2 Mod

Varkster

Dude...this brings back so many memories of scavenging ModDB and following weekly updates for Half-Life 1 and 2 mods.

Estranged wasn't my favourite mod of the bunch, but this looks great, and even the fact that this now exists as a full release is awesome.

Underhell is a mod that springs to mind when I think of something which could be refined and made its own thing. That mod was seriously impressive, the amount of assets the team created along with completely new game mechanics.

It's inspiring to look at Dev teams like this with humble beginnings who push the boundaries and end up creating something bigger. I felt the same way when I saw Stanley Parable release as its own full game. Not to mention Counter-Strike and Garry's Mod.

Re: Here's The Resolution Of Each Game In Super Mario 3D All-Stars

Varkster

Looking at it, honestly Galaxy with its superb art direction and beautiful environments has aged incredibly well. Even if it's just a straight up-res it will still look fantastic in this day and age.

64 on the other hand, not so. That being said, I'm surprised at how many people in the comment section were disappointed with this collection. Maybe it's because the rumours already killed all element of surprise but three full 3D Mario games in one full-priced package is a steal.

Here in Australia to buy Galaxy on its OWN for the damn WII costs around $50 in most stores. I don't know in what world we live in that we expected these games to get full remakes in a current-age Mario engine. I think everyone is mislead to believe that isn't a gargantuan undertaking. To remake these games for the modern age would take a huge amount of time and resources, and I wouldn't be surprised if in that scenario we would get 3 full priced releases instead.

Lack of other game announcements from Nintendo may be disheartening, but this collection is far from disappointing. The sales will prove that notion.

Re: A Subnautica Physical Release Appears To Be Surfacing On Nintendo Switch

Varkster

@CTmatic Even though technically the game is very different in genre, it definitely has some aspects which remind me of Endless Ocean. I invested over 50 hours in both games and can say that the exploration and wonder aspect is very similar between the two.

Maybe it's just the fact that there's no other big exploration underwater games where you find treasure and discover different underwater species but I stand by my opinion. Also there are clunky ground control and mild island exploring in both as well as some supernatural elements.

Endless Ocean 3 definitely needs to happen. Excellent series and it's a shame Nintendo doesn't want to do anything with it.

Re: Shigesato Itoi's Company Reveals New Mother Themed Merch

Varkster

Unpopular opinion but I think Earthbound and Mother 3 are very much products of their time and although they're fantastic games, for a sequel they would need to seriously re-design the game and we know how fans would react to such a change (look at Paper Mario for an example).

I want to be proven wrong though.

Re: Devil May Cry's Dante Returns As DLC In Shin Megami Tensei III

Varkster

@shazbot Most games on release are $80+ in Australia, I assume he's alluding to that metric.

Regardless, a HD remaster of a PS2 title simply shouldn't have any form of DLC if released full price. It should have additional content to incentivise people to double dip rather than emulate the old game or buy it for cheaper elsewhere.

Re: Nintendo Switch Sales Surpass 61 Million, Equalling The Mighty NES

Varkster

@cheesedude I disagree, Nintendo has worked on smaller projects in the past, hell, even new IP's. Following this logic we would be seeing nothing but Mario and Animal Crossing for the past 5 years but of course this wasn't the case.

When a fanbase of a console is this large it's wise to invest in more niche franchises as in the long run, it will attract a bigger audience and attract new fans as well as outsiders attracted to said niche. It's always worth it, from a business standpoint, to invest in amassing long-term appeal for every single owned IP, otherwise Nintendo would have long since sold them off.

I see your point about potential revenue but you're thinking on a very short-term approach. Nintendo is a long-term business and something that may seem obvious to us may not be benifitial to them in the end.

As for the amount of staff and resources, Nintendo is very well off in that regard. The amount of first and second party studios under Nintendo's flag is enormous, the only fault with what I said is that Nintendo seems to have a very high quality standard for hiring new developers. Usually they hire people with a lot of past experience for their bigger studios.

This is all my take, at the very least.

Re: Nintendo Switch Sales Surpass 61 Million, Equalling The Mighty NES

Varkster

I really hope they can use this opportunity to explore their lesser-known franchises. There's already a massive install base and new weekly owners of the Switch. Half of my friends own one and the other half want one and most of them don't even play video games.

This is a perfect opportunity to invest into franchises that can bring this newfound fanbase under their wings. I'm thinking Kid Icarus, Endless Ocean, Eternal Darkness, Fatal Frame, etc. Nintendo has an unlimited amount of IP's and essentially even resources, it'd be nice to see these series return in a new light.

What's exciting about this news is that the Switch attracted this audience with true games, they weren't focused on the blue ocean unlimited revenue titles of the past but brought us very core experiences. I'd be the first to argue that the term "hardcore games" is stupid, but I'm glad they've learned from their Wii/Wii U years that in order to maintain attention you need to output high quality, not Wii Music.

Re: Animal Crossing: New Horizons Has Sold Over 22 Million Copies

Varkster

@FX102A While that's a fun observation, that's not entirely how economy works. Nintendo has a lot of subsidiaries under its wing and they have many developers who did not participate in the creation of this game. Trust me when I say this money isn't going to just pay off all the other developers who are working on other projects to have a good, long holiday. Instead, the majority of it is going into the development of other, bigger projects.

This maybe gave incentive to prolong some development times in order to make higher quality releases, but that's already pushing it.

A company, and I mean every single company out there has one major objective and that's to expand. They constantly have to have heightened work-loads and increasing capacity in order to put out more revenue year upon year. I guarantee you if anything they are probably putting more pressure on developers to make playable versions of upcoming games so they can release new trailers.

If Nintendo was some indie dev who made a load of cash, put some shades on and went to a Hawaiian resort sipping martini, well that would be a whole different story.

Re: Paper Mario: The Origami King Version 1.0.1 Now Available - Fixes Game-Breaking Bug And Multiple Other Issues

Varkster

@Andrew5678 Lockdown has very likely hindered the ability to get proper play testers who communicate well to the development team. From what I hear face to face testing is much more efficient than communicating through emails about every minor bug.

I wouldn't be surprised if the games upcoming in the next few months have their share of bugs. There isn't much anybody can do.

Re: WayForward's New Switch Game Is Bakugan Champions Of Vestroia, Coming In November

Varkster

@TG16_IS_BAE Did I say anything that implies otherwise? They literally announced they will show Paper Mario and a new game by WayForward.

People are sh*tting all over this game and I feel genuinely bad for the developers who probably put hard work into it.

As I said it wasn't a direct and they didn't say they will show any games. If this was the first reveal for Paper Mario noone would mind.

Re: The ESA Reminds Us That E3 Will Return

Varkster

I honestly have no idea why everyone wants E3 to go so bad. It's a nice time during the year to look at big announcements and yeah, sometimes they don't deliver but even for the hilarious awkward moments on stage I would like it to stay.

Todd Howard coming on stage after the abysmal Fallout 76 is permanently engraved in my mind, that's what I live for.

Re: Capcom Says "No" To Monster Hunter World On Nintendo Switch (Again)

Varkster

@FullMetalWesker I would argue that Devil May Cry 5 is the only Capcom game in recent years which blew it out of the park. I played through Remake 2 and I felt as if the game played it very safe, Monster Hunter World felt like a game crafted just to make it out of the niche and create a much more accessible version of an existing franchise (aka. Oblivion vs Morrowind).

Maybe I'm a jaded old gamer but Capcom is far from a "golden age" and their Switch support has been absolutely abysmal. Maybe I shouldn't have expected them to even try porting their games over, but at least develop smaller projects for the system. The current state of Capcom's library on the Switch is just laughable.

Re: Monolith Soft Celebrates 10 Years Of Xenoblade Chronicles With Special Artwork

Varkster

@Franz It gets even better, trust me. The story and characters in the first game much surpass the second game in my opinion.

You'll eventually run into your next party member and there are many more themes introduced that you wouldn't expect from the game.

@RCGamer I think he was listing in-house Nintendo IP's, not games made by Monolith Soft to prove a point that Nintendo has games with heavier themes to counterbalance the more playful "games for kids".

Re: Japanese Charts: Animal Crossing Denies Xenoblade Chronicles A Debut Week At Number One

Varkster

@TheLightSpirit I don't understand how it's a full game when it's named "Remake" and doesn't tell a full story with a clearly unsatisfying ending. This "full game" was planned with sequels in mind in pre-production.

I still remember people giving Deus Ex: Mankind Divided a hard time because it was clearly a plot setting up a bigger threat even though THAT by all means was a big AAA new game with new characters and story beats. FF7R gets a pass despite it being a remake of a pre-existing plot?

FF7R doesn't stand as a full game with a full conclusion on its own in my eyes.

Like the other guy said I don't really feel like arguing either, I'm tired, there's plenty of other worse problems to worry about than debating remakes of video games. I likely won't reply to anyone elses comment after this so feel free to prove me wrong, I'm not gonna bother.

Have a good day though.

Re: Japanese Charts: Animal Crossing Denies Xenoblade Chronicles A Debut Week At Number One

Varkster

@Razer FF7R is an unfinished game dude. Not only is it a very clearly unfinished product, but it's also a very conflicted game in its development. Without its sequels it's a terrible investment for players because the story isn't even halfway through and they're planning to release the second and third part (if not fourth) with re-used assets and quite possibly entirely trash the story up. The reason it's priced the way it is is because it's an investment, you're not getting the full package. For reference, look at RE2 Remake reception as opposed to RE3. This exact same thing already happened and people were angry.

The quality of that game (which many fans and non-paid critics already sh*t all over) is an entirely different debate/discussion which I can't participate in since I've yet to play the game.

Also you seem to be going into the Dev territory assuming you know how long each game takes to make and how much dedicated manpower there is behind a project. I won't even argue with you there because I think you know why you're wrong.

Re: Japanese Charts: Animal Crossing Denies Xenoblade Chronicles A Debut Week At Number One

Varkster

@Razer I deleted my long reply to your comment as well so let me just put it blunt and clear to you.

Old ports coming from other consoles with no improvements or additional content is what people whine about. Some of these ports have sh*t performance even though they were initially designed for PS3/X360. People didn't whine when Witcher 3 came despite it being a clear downgrade because it was a port done right. It becomes a problem however when a game you release as a cheap port on the system for full price with no extra features has a current much cheaper counterpart on other systems. That's a real problem. People aren't whining about Xenoblade because it is an improved version of the older game in every sense of the word and the original still holds up very well in the modern scene. You can't play this game anywhere but Nintendo systems. You can't play this superior version of the game anywhere but the Switch.

I don't know what mind game you're playing trying to convince me it's not. It's factually improved in every. single. way.

That plus 10 hours of new content which, some full priced games aren't even 10 hours long, so how tf can you tell me this ain't worth the price?

I put my money into developers that deserve it. If I see a Dark Souls dev shun the Nintendo fanbase for years then release a delayed crappy port of their game just to make a quick buck, yeah, sorry my guy. Not gonna support that sh*t. And this is coming from a Dark Souls fan.

Re: Japanese Charts: Animal Crossing Denies Xenoblade Chronicles A Debut Week At Number One

Varkster

@Razer I think he was just pointing out that your "it's not a masterpiece as people make it out to be" seemed to be very condescending and written as if fact.

Many "make it out to be" a masterpiece because in their eyes it actually is. In yours, it isn't. I'm a long time WRPG fan, going back to Baldur's Gate days and I could never get into JRPG games such as Tales or Final Fantasy. The characters never gripped me and the worlds, although interesting, couldn't keep me engaged because they always seemed shallow.

To me, personally, Xenoblade was the game that started up an interest in even picking up these various franchises again. The undeniably great music, the strong unique art design, the great voice acting, characters and an engaging story with a diverse cast all kept me coming back to it. Judging by the internet I see others feeling the same.

Opinions are opinions - and yours is just that. As for what you think on the price, I'll just straight up disagree. Xenoblade Definitive is branded and advertised as a "definitive edition" in its title, much like many other definitive editions that come out with no improvements over the original games other than smoother framerate in places. In this package you're getting the game remade in a new engine with new animations, improved models, added features, VERY much improved questing system which saves TONS of player time as well as a re-imagined soundtrack with the original still being in the game and easily selectable. Oh and not to mention the entirely new 10-hour epilogue chapter slapped on top as well with brand new voice acting, story and even new gameplay elements not present in the original game. The original game offers countless hours of content with 60-70% of it being completely optional and for those who want to be completionists. There is never a point in the game where you need to grind your ass off and the combat is actually on your feet and linked directly to player engagement and skill unlike hot garbage like FFXV. You can play as 7 characters and combinations thereof in your party to experiment and mix and match with their unique skill sets, hell they even threw in a challenge mode in the new version just for fun with its completely separate from the main game currency and ranking system.

I don't know what to you is worth the price tag on a definitive game. I don't know if you're just being cynical for whatever reason, but the original Xenoblade deserves the praise it gets. I do believe anyone who would say that Xenoblade for a full price in this current state isn't worth it is seriously insane. I'm 25 hours into my game and I'm not slowing down in playing in on the way to work and even at home (even though I prefer PC gaming at home and not my Switch). I'm also only about 25% through the main story. That's saying a lot man.

Re: It Doesn't Sound Like A Nintendo Direct Will Be Happening Anytime Soon

Varkster

As I said during these times I prefer this because Nintendo can just drop great announcements without people's hightened expectations for Directs or an E3 special. It means people can get excited about single releases instead of overall disappointment, which is usually the case with the latter format. Also means people can notice the more obscure titles instead of them being overshadowed by bigger franchises.

Now show me some weirdos like Endless Ocean 3 and WarioWare!

Re: UK Charts: Animal Crossing: New Horizons Fends Off GTA V For Another Week At Number One

Varkster

@playstation_king I mean...none of this is an indication that Animal Crossing is selling poor - it's literally in top spot with no discernable way to tell the difference in numbers between it and GTA V.

Keep in mind that there are also massive shortages of both the Switch and Animal Crossing in the UK which means a lot of people are probably sticking to buying games on other systems.

Re: Random: Japanese Scheme To "Smash" Switch Scalpers Doesn't Quite Go According To Plan

Varkster

@Collette Sony and Microsoft are just as affected by this. I think they would have already fully revealed their systems by now if not for the situation.

Production of most systems is outsourced to China. Not only that, but shipping products to multiple countries and retailers will, on its own, prove very difficult with the moderation of international flights. I work in a company where production has slowed down by a large degree because of this, and I work in Australia, not China.

Re: Random: Japanese Scheme To "Smash" Switch Scalpers Doesn't Quite Go According To Plan

Varkster

I'm surprised that people would even go so far as to buy a gaming system, regardless of high demand or shortages, at insane prices like this. Surely, people could invest their money into other things (or other game devices) until all of this boils down, this just looks like complete madness.

I guess Japanese people really gotta have that Animal Crossing.

@Krull We will likely find out once stock shortages disappear. Once people are adamant on buying a system or game, it's really tough for them to give up, especially given these circumstances. Humans are very stubborn creatures.

Once the virus situation dies down I doubt everyone who wanted a Switch will just fold their arms and say "oh well, I don't want it anymore".

Re: Rumours About Pikmin 3 Coming To Nintendo Switch Intensify

Varkster

@Ambassador_Kong Developers took this as a "testing waters bring whatever we want in remastered form onto the Switch" and started releasing only re-hashes and re-releases. This is not within Nintendo's power as a company and I don't see how this is relevant in the argument whatsoever. Establishing relations as Nintendo did with Platinum isn't an everyday ordeal and requires a lot of business interaction and money investments. I also want to point out that the third party games that are re-released on the Switch in singles, trilogies and packages for the most part have never seen the light of day on a single Nintendo system. They also have never been playable in portable form, which means a lot of people who have skipped over these titles on release will absolutely pick them up on the Switch if interested with the massive strength of portability. It makes a large amount of sense why these developers are porting over their games, it introduces a new fandom to their franchises and brings lots of revenue. If a sequel or a spin-off or even a game by the same developer with no past connection to any games beforehand is put on the Switch, it's likely to see a big audience anticipating its release, simply because of their provided support with previous ports. Sony's PS4, on the other hand, saw a massive amount of re-released titles from third parties which were all available on PS3, PS2 and the Vita. These games were readily available for the fans on their previous generation systems (with slight performance differences). I think you can see the difference without me openly stating it.

My comparison to Sony was showing that people give Sony a pass for lacklustre first-party output, however Nintendo seems to get a lot of criticism and you very much proved that notion.

I think you as well are a self-entitled little turkey who also looks at a business and pretends to see and analyse how well it's run and what they have in the pipeline. I'd say you're comparable to the industry joke Michael Pachter, except Pachter actually has professional experience with business and a long-term knowledge (albeit flawed) of the gaming industry. People running these companies are many in numbers and much more intelligent than you. Stop being pretentious and arrogant believing you or anybody else on this website for that matter knows how to run a business. As well-written and long as your comment is, I'm sorry your response is even more bizarre and clueless than the original comment I was responding to. I do not care how many insults you may shove in your comment, it doesn't add to your credibility and I don't think people should be discouraged from pointing out that some comments on this website, despite the person who wrote them, are simply a crock of sh*t. I will once again reiterate that calling me a fanboy to validate your argument is downright retarded as I game for the vast majority on my PC and have owned a PS4, PSVita, PSP and the original Xbox before in my life. Have a good day, buddy.
