I played the first on my Amiga and the second on my first "IBM compatible" as PC's were called back then. Remember being let down by the third and not going back but with the OG team (-Tim) back together I'll will be headed back to my 20's hoping for some good laughs.
It does look like a student project. But with the number of games they sell I don't think they care at all. I think all their effort goes into getting the next one out of the door. And are people buying and enjoying the games, so it's hard to argue with.
Its nothing to do with the name. Its based on one of the best selling board games of the past decade. I will admit we have gone from playing a game every month or so to not even considering it when we pull out a board game in the last 2 years so that may have effected sales. It may well be a licensing issue, and this seems to be the most likely issue as sales may not have meet expectations when the deal was done due to what been going on for the last couple of years.
I spent about 200 hours playing MK8D. I spent about 20 minutes playing MK tour before I deleted it. But with MK8D still selling well and tour bringing in low effort cash I don't expect to see MK9 for some time. It's a shame as every Nintendo console generation should have its own MK release and it is looking unlikely the switch will ever get one. Still, we can hope.
@1ThomasBW84 I have to ask, did you not think to wipe the finger prints off the screen before you filmed it? Maybe its just my laptop screen but I'm sure I could login to your phone they are so clear
The switch was my fist Nintendo console for many many years, I had a wii for a couple of months but a friend wanted one for his daughter for Xmas and could not find one so I gave him mine. I pre-ordered the switch and had mine day one. I thought the marketing was great, Skyrim on a plane. I would not have bought a home console though. I bought the switch as a handheld. That switch has about 3000 hours play on it so at 10p an hour I've had great value from the hardware!
Great read! Well done. We use to have a lot more of this kind of stuff when games Journalists worked in print. Its a shame it does not match the click bait in an on-line world but it still gives a publication standing.
I think they tooled up for the pro but there is no silicon out there so as the old parts run short they have released the OLED as a stop gap. It will become harder from Nintendo to stick with the current switch as the internal parts are just to old to source and will become more expensive than the upgraded parts.
The switch relies on the mobile market for parts and even the cheapest phones are using denser chips than the switch. the X1 is a 22nm design. Its currently fabbed at 16nm but those lines are shutting down. The X1 design will not shrink further. Nintendo maybe has 12 months part supply until its hands are forced.
It's sad that the best thing Konami can say about their games is that they will not be making them. Lets face it, Konami is not a games developer anymore, its just a company that happens to have some of the oldest gaming IP locked in a cupboard in the back of one of their Casinos.
@Desrever Man it's great when that happens, It's not often these days, though that's me not a shortage of great games, but gaming is never better than when it grabs you by the nuts and doesn't let go till your done.
These games are always better when the dev is able to take the time needed to get it right. The first game bought them plenty of time to work on this. No rush from me, I will be happy to see it release though.
That's a long project. I know dissecting and relinking the Wii main board has been documented a few times but still that's a whole load of prototyping to produce that level of polish in the unit. With that as his CV, I would hire him a flash.
I wound if BotW-2 could be Big N's answer to the next gen consoles dropping over the holidays. It could be a good strategy to hold back until the final drop dates and prices are announced and only then announce holiday date for BOTW-2 to get back some news cycles
Xcloud is cheap, no money down and it works really well on my cheap android phone. And it performs well both on my wifi and over 4G. Given for my £18 a month I already have unlimited data, I must disagree that network service is not ready or available, at least in the UK both are more than ready. Xcloud would now seem to be Nintendos direct and largest competition
carl zeiss maked a similar 1080p headset a number of years ago. I used it for drone flying and to play PS4 in bed. I think I played most of a run of the witcher and good but fallout 4 on it. The novelty does not last long and at £600 for the CZ it was only worth it for the best possible first person view flying available at the time, not worth it as a gaming device
I bought on PC due to the reported problems on the switch port, it may look better but i just never got around to playing (like most games i buy on the PC) wish i'd picked up the switch version as l'm sure I'd have played it to death by now. Not to late of course...
@Deanstead2k20 It'e quite good value in book, I bought one battle pass, Since than my kid has earned enough to buy the following season every time and had bit left over. I think he has around 4000 Vbucks now. He does not buy skins as so many are part of the battle pass. He has about 500+ hours in the game. At £10 that a great per hour value
We log on (by we, I mean my 8 year old who is fornite crazy) at 6:25 UK time, just before the recommended 6:30 and got in without a problem, I thought he had just joined a squads match and had him exit and reconnect at about 6:40 it took a while but still got back in. Guess we were lucky. Next time i'll keep my mouth shut though. Clearly I came close to making him miss it.
Well i must be letting the team down. Took me a good year to unlock gold Mario and had a terrible online record. Has been a while since i played. May go a few laps this evening and bask in the glory earned by my country men and women.
The switch has been on sale in china since close to launch. I may have spotted a PS4 or Xbox in one of my trips , I don't recall but seeing the Switch for sale is common. I remember the price being really high so grey imports in the past no doubt but, at least in Shanghai, Beijing and Shenzhen they have always been openly for sale.
@Maxz Its not just the areas that are under quarantine, my colleges tell of the streets of Shanghai being deserted. They send the occasional photos of major places in a city of 44 million being absolutely empty. People are not going out and getting bored.
I would strongly advice against Xcom 2. That game can steal your life away like a bad drug, and in handheld could cost you your Partner, your Job and your Kids.... And I'm only half joking. There is no way I'm going to risk getting sucked back in.... 😎
We play a lot of table top games. Getting a fully painted set of minis is very expensive. While a standard game set of that gender would set you back £80~£100 painted would exceed £300 every time. So I guess its value would depend on the quality and play ability of the tabletop game itself. I had my sons Galactic Assault plus a couple of expansion set figures painted as a gift a while back and it cost far more than this collectors set. But that is a highly rated game, so has some value.
@Razer If I'm not mistaken they release their quarterly earning report today, 22nd. I think historically they only report unit sales on the 6 month and yearly reports. Nintendo have never released monthly unit sales, even for Japan. The above numbers are from Famitsu.
Edit: Just checked and its not today its on the 30th
We all know Doom guy and Link are one and the same, both resurrected through the ages to fight an inevitable evil. Different time lines, same war. The only thing stopping Id and Nintendo from coming right out and admitting it is it would cause havoc in Hyrule, Hell and the offices of every demon IP lawyer on earth.
I am soooo over all the 8 and 16 bit retro revival. It was great for a while, reminding us that games were great before graphics ruled but yep, for me its done. I'm all for reviving some of the older genders of games. Hollow Knight is one of my all time greatest hits. But Hollow Knight also shows how to bring classic game play into the modern world.
With many of the big hitters missing from this list I wounder if it shows the diversity of the user base or the continued value of physical media. I have always preferred physical but I only buy on the switch now, the small size seems to be a better fit to this age in my head for some surly unreasonable reason.
I'm not going near BOTW until release date of BOTW-2 is know and near. Otherwise I will end up doing a third run and if I have a release date to work to I will not spend 200+ hours on it this time.
Nintendo is on the ball, I hear its heard about this new fangled thing call the InterWedNet or something and is just waiting for it to take off before embracing it....
On a more serious note, Even as someone with super reliable 170Mbps internet access with major data centres 5ms from my line, I have very little to no interest in streaming. I did get the x-cloud mobile beta invite and it was good to see tomb raider playing on my phone perfectly but the novelty did not last longer than a few hours when I went right back to the switch as my main place to play.
