As promised, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is receiving a couple of welcome updates today on Nintendo Switch, introducing a Boss Revenge mode and some new customisation options. The best part? They're both free!
The updates were first mentioned last month when the team unveiled a 2020 development roadmap, detailing a number of content additions that are in the works and planned to launch this year. Let's take a closer look at what you'll be able to enjoy today:
Boss Revenge Mode
It’s time for the bosses of Bloodstained to get their revenge on the heroes! Boss Revenge mode puts you in control of one of Bloodstained’s notorious villains: Andrealphus, Bathin, Bloodless or Gremory.
Each boss comes equipped with their own roster of abilities, and their own unique play styles. Once you’ve chosen your character, you’ll challenge a series of heroes: Zangetsu, Dominique and finally, Miriam. The battles are set in their own dedicated spaces. Once you win your fight, you’ll be sent to a transition room to prepare for the next challenge.
Chroma Wheel
Ready for a new look? Todd the Killer Barber has really improved his abilities and is ready to update your style! Previously you were limited to just a few color options when customizing your look. Now you will have an entire range of colors to choose from.
The variable options can be applied to Hair, Sub Hair Color (A new option!), Outfit, Sub Outfit Color, Skin and Eyes. Currently lip color isn’t an option, but it will be added in the next update. When you’re ready to try out the new options, head to Todd and help him reach 666 hairstyles so he can have his curse lifted!
That's not all, though, because this new update is also patching in some other changes. In a bid to let fans access content as quickly as possible, some in-game features will now be unlocked right from the start:
Unlocked from the start, including new profiles and existing profiles that have not beaten the game:
- Speedrun Mode – Unlocked
- Randomizer Mode – Unlocked
- Boss Revenge Mode – Unlocked
- Zangetsu – Unlocked
Requires game progression to access:
- Boss Rush
- Hard Difficulty
- Nightmare Difficulty
In other Bloodstained news, remember that Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon 2 is also coming to Switch soon. We first heard about it just last month.

Neat, but I'm likely to continue playing the PC version over the Switch version now that I have both.
Those screenshots are from the PC version too, if it's not obvious.
This is great news! Implemented far quicker onto the Switch than any of us expected.
This part though is really good and very unexpected--

Wow you can customize a bad game...
@Zanzox
Very funny. Let's feed the troll.
Evidently you haven't played the game or even like this genre.
Congratulations for wasting your time reading an article and commenting about something you don't like.
Bravo.
Got distracted a different game so havent played to original very much.
Will go back to it in time
@Rosona not funny... I very like the genre and I played almost all metroidvania published since SOTN (I still have my copy on the psx) ... And also I PLAYED this game a lot. And confirm it is a bad game.
An ugly copy of sotn... Especially on switch.
Curse of the moon is A LOT BETTER.
I NEVER offend you so why you call me troll? It is my simple opinion.
@RupeeClock oh really? We thought switch have a z button? You funny kid.
I've just about finished Astral Chain so I was thinking of giving this a go. How's performance right now? Can anyone who owns the game chime in?
Cool, I will update today.
@Zanzox it's quite explicitly a very good game wyd
This game has been out a year at this point l, yeah? I haven’t play it since 3 weeks after its release. No multiplayer still? Didn’t they say they were adding that?
@DeclanS98 I really don't think so... It's only a matter of opinion...
Has performance improved to be on par with other versions?
im hoping their going to still fix some of the issues that still plagues the game like the resolution/polishing the graphics abit in some areas of the game.
Sooooo is it playable on Switch right now or are they adding new content without fixing the old issues?
I'm genuinely curious because I'd like to play this game but I'd rather have it on Switch than PC, if the former version isn't broken anymore.
Here’s all this meaningless stuff while we continue to stall on the performance update.
Still have this sealed copy on my shelf, need to get round to playing it and expect some hefty updates when i do since i assume the physical copy will have the original form on cart.
I bought on PC due to the reported problems on the switch port, it may look better but i just never got around to playing (like most games i buy on the PC) wish i'd picked up the switch version as l'm sure I'd have played it to death by now. Not to late of course...
Was going to write something about how pointless this update is when there is desperate need for a performance patch. Looks like I was beaten to it several times. Would like to see a new review from Nintendolife, once this game meets the standard it should have met at launch.
@Moistnado An updated review after a performance update would be nice, if they ever actually update it. I'm sensing that they may just let it slide.
To me the game is still just bland. I was cleaning up my Nintendo DS games and thought “it would be really awesome to see what a Castlevania on Switch would look like.” I momentarily forgot about this game existing even though it was on the shelf next to the DS games.
@Zanzox bs. If you didnt pmay it but liked SOTN and the other metroidvanias than you definitely didnt play this one as it improves on the other games
@TG16_IS_BAE I thought they already did a performance update...?
@Zanzox I really liked it so far, optimized poorly ya, is it a bad game? No not at all. I was not a backer though so I have no disappointment.
@Bizzyb Sadly they haven't pushed it out, yet.
@Zanzox it's only bad on switch.
looks and plays incredible on my One X, free on Game Pass too!
@Casco No. Switch is still by far the worst platform to play this on and if you have another option, I'd play it there.
@TG16_IS_BAE The performance update came out months ago. It plays fine now.
What time will this be available? EST.
Bring it on...I get back to playing it again....after Xeno and ACNH....
@MisterMan I could ´play it on Gamepass but this kind of game I would enjoy more on my Switch, so I was holding up playing it hoping Switch version would get better. Apparently that won't be the case.
@Casco it's not unplayable. if you didn't play it on gamepass yet you might not be turned off by how bad it performs, but it would be really rough going from that to the Switch. I played it first on PC and loved it, bought it again on Switch because I loved the idea of playing it handheld, but after a few hours I couldn't deal with it anymore.
@Tim_Vreeland Not what I’ve been reading on their website. There is another performance update they have been working on. It’s in their dev journal or whatever they call it.
DO NOT TRUST ANYTHING REGARDING THIS GAME!
This title, along with so many articles regarding bloodstained in the past, is not accurate. This update is not coming to Switch July 2, obviously.
@SpaceKaren in fact I speak about switch one... Even if I hate that 2.5d graphical style. Has no charisma...imho
@DanTee in fact it is a bad game for me! I gave an opinion on a game not on a person like some other that named me as troll. When I give an opinion on a game it clear is my opinion... Not an objective statement.
What I don't like that some people think they know me and judge me without knowing anything about me... just from an opinion about a game.
I am 42 years old and I don't waste my time making trolls
@Zanzox man these young dudes will chew younout for having an opinion these days. It offends them so they will absolutely call you names.. you can’t have an opinion on the internet, it’s taken too seriously and look at the reactions of these people.. @DanTee get a life dude
@DBZdan12 perfect analisys mate !
@DanTee “white knighting”... If I told you to ***** off would you thank me for allowing you to be the victim you so desire to be? I’ll do you that favor kid, ***** off.
You’re welcome.
White knighting?? Lol nah you just attacked @zanzox for literally having an opinion that was not your own.
He can say what he wants about the game, when he wants, why he wants... you’re suggesting he’s not allowed stating a simple, quick opinion and actually owes you more of an explanation??
Why not be a social justice warrior in your community and not a loud mouth ass online?
@Zanzox
Yes, I called you out for being a troll as that is exactly how you were coming across, apologies if this offended.
But it was by no means an attack or something to be taken personal, since you have declared your age, i'm surprised you did take it personal, but that is besides the point.
Yes everyone is entitled to an opinion, an all have differing ones. But when you state "Wow you can customize a bad game..." that is outright being a troll, especially on a game like this where there has been a huge divide due to it's performance.
You can not like the game but it doesn't mean it is bad. An as metroidvania's go, it's one of the best ones for a long time. Critics and fans agree, just the Switch port is where the issues arise, not the game itself.
@Rosona yep... Effectively my comment was wrote in hurry, my intentions was something like "imho the game is bad, by graphics (I don't like 2.5d style) and Gameplay is too copy and paste from sotn... Also on switch is blurred and terrible too see"
However I'm not offended about your comment, but appreciate your last post 🤝
Why did you delete all of your comments @Dantee?
@rosona any idea release date for Switch?
@Benji80 any idea when Boss Revenge will be on Switch?
