Nintendo has shared a list of the top 15 most-downloaded Switch eShop games of December 2019 in Europe, and you probably wouldn't have guessed which game has taken top spot.
It was the turn of Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle to beat the competition and be the most popular game on the eShop last month, fending off the likes of Minecraft and Pokémon. Don't get us wrong, it's a truly fantastic game, but we wouldn't have expected it to top the charts two and a half years after release.
You can check out the full list below. It's based on the number of Nintendo eShop downloads (so no physical sales) in European territories during the whole month:
- Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle
- Minecraft
- Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition
- Pokémon Sword
- Monopoly for Nintendo Switch
- Overcooked! 2
- Rayman Legends: Definitive Edition
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
- Stardew Valley
- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Complete Edition
- Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy
- Luigi’s Mansion 3
- Pokémon Shield
- Assassin’s Creed III Remastered
- Cuphead
Did you download any of these titles on Switch last month? Any surprises in the top 15? Tell us below.

Time for sequel?
Dang, I REALLY want a a sequel for Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle. Also Cuphead physical release please.
Less than £12 in the sale made it the cheapest Mario branded game over Christmas. I'm not surprised. All those new Switch owners after new games...
I might be in the minority but I would like to see a Zelda + Rabbids
I downloaded Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle Gold Edition in December. It was generously discounted and it is one of the best Switch exclusives as far as I know... and the normal edition was even cheaper. The game is great but I was slightly disappointed by the sub-30 frame rate.
Wow, I'm so glad to see Ori and Witcher selling so well! Fantastic games.
Comparing this to the PS4 lists released last week - what a good list (for the most part)!
This list is made great thanks to its lack of EA and Activision yearly titles with recycled content (imo).
Question: Since we seem to be that only family without Mario+Rabbids, can anyone recommend if it is good for an 8-year-old?
Who buys Monopoly?!
All i want is a physical for Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition, please
@Kienda Of course it is safe for an 8-year-old. Its level of violence is very mild and weapons are futuristic.
@BlueOcean Hehe. Yeah, seeing the trailers and knowing Nintendo with their flagship mascot I would imagine that to be the case.
I was meaning in terms of difficulty.
@Murbs
Yeah that makes a lot of sense.
@Kienda Oh well, I still haven't played much but I think it's not really difficult and it has a smooth difficulty curve. It might get trickier later on though, I don't know.
You can't really trust Nintendo as kids-respectful after Nintendo Badge Arcade or Pocket Camp though (for other reasons).
@koekiemonster
Well I got the physical edition.
I like Mario+Rabbids a lot but... why is it selling so well now? Was it on sale with a big discount? It's not really new anymore.
@Heavyarms55 As reported it was on sale, also probably word of mouth as it is generally touted as a great title...
@KitsuneNight where and how?
@KoekiieWoekiie
I havent played this one yet. I was having doubts. But reading your comment made me reconsider lol.
@KoekiieWoekiie
Nedgame had it used on sale.
They stil have physical copies of the game new.
I’ve maybe spent an hour in Mario and rabbids and couldn’t get into it. I’ll have another run at it at some point.
Ori needs buying too...
@Kienda my son is coming nine, he’s had it since shortly after it launched for his Switch and he loved it, put so much hours in to it I was happy to get him the DLC too. My nephew also has it, he’s a bit older but he loves it too.
@Kienda
Opinion ?
More like fact.
Fifa And COD are the same damn thing each year.
Yeah, as others have said, it's mainly due to the price M+RKB was sold at.
@KBuckley27 Actually, if the brand of humour and the fun put into and out of the final product, the accessible yet rewarding gameplay, and the respect for the original IP is as great as with Mario + Rabbids, I'd be behind Zelda + Rabbids. Plenty of source material, and with Toon Link there's plenty of expression and opportunity for comedy.
As for the article itself, I'm not surprised. There was a huge sale, the game is awesome, and the Switch hardware had plenty of new adopters. If I hadn't beaten it 100% + expansion, and would for some reason not have owned it anymore (twice, because I found the gold edition physical at a cheaper price than the dlc itself), I'd have bought it again at that price.
Present decent sale prices and people buy things
The fact that it's a Mario game that's been under £15 in several sales, has surely helped.
@KitsuneNight are you talking about Cuphead? they said they were releasing the physical edition on switch once the dlc was complete.
Also are you Dutch?
Apart from Mario odyssey, the Switch has been a huge let down for me so far. Much prefer the SNES, N64, 3ds and WIIU. Hope 2020 brings some much needed quality to the table.
@KoekiieWoekiie
No I was talking about Monopoly.
Got Rabbids in one of the many sales but couldn't get into the game and got stuck because I'm thick.
My family enjoy board games like cluedo and monopoly on switch - easy to set up and tidy away!
With many of the big hitters missing from this list I wounder if it shows the diversity of the user base or the continued value of physical media. I have always preferred physical but I only buy on the switch now, the small size seems to be a better fit to this age in my head for some surly unreasonable reason.
@KitsuneNight man you had me. Props to you
Mario + Rabbids is probably the most fun I've had on the Switch. Hurry up with a sequel already. Really expected to see more indies on there. Shame Slay the Spire or Into the Beach can't make that list. Both fantastic games.
@koekiemonster presumably people who want to play it.
Nice to see a lot of 3rd party stuff make it on these lists. Big change from previous gens.
Alien Isolation deserves better than this 😔😔😔
Seems like the Netflix show boisted Witcher by quite a lot, much like it did on PSN.
Wow the staying power of Minecraft is incredible!
@KoopaTheQuick Ah cool. Ever notice how the eshop doesn't show sale prices if you already have the game? That's why I didn't notice. lol
3 of the 15 games is from Microsoft.
I'm surprised to see Witcher 3 so high on that list considering it's a like 24 GB or someting like that. I figured most people would buy that physically.
