Just last weekend, Capcom revealed Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness - an upcoming Netflix anime CG series. Now, following on from this, we've got our first proper look at the new Monster Hunter movie.
This brief teaser trailer shows Milia Jovovich (best-known as Alice in the Resident Evil films) and co, facing off against a large demon-like creature that looks like it's been pulled straight from the DOOM or Diablo series. To be fair, the IGN description does make mention of Diablos:
Check out the new Monster Hunter movie teaser trailer featuring Diablos. Behind our world, there is another: a world of dangerous and powerful monsters that rule their domain with deadly ferocity.
When an unexpected sandstorm transports Lt. Artemis (Milla Jovovich) and her unit (TI Harris, Meagan Good, Diego Boneta) to a new world, the soldiers are shocked to discover that this hostile and unknown environment is home to enormous and terrifying monsters immune to their firepower. In their desperate battle for survival, the unit encounters the mysterious Hunter (Tony Jaa), whose unique skills allow him to stay one step ahead of the powerful creatures.
As Artemis and Hunter slowly build trust, she discovers that he is part of a team led by the Admiral (Ron Perlman). Facing a danger so great it could threaten to destroy their world, the brave warriors combine their unique abilities to band together for the ultimate showdown.
Monster Hunter, directed by Mortal Kombat and Resident Evil's Paul W.S. Anderson, is based on the global video game series phenomenon.
While the Monster Hunter film was originally set to make its debut this year on 4th September, Sony ended up pushing it back. Its date has now been moved from 23rd April 2021 to this December.
What do you think of this teaser trailer? Will you be watching when Monster Hunter releases in cinemas this December? Leave a comment down below.

Guns? And cars? Mmm
When I think Monster Hunter, I definitely think of modern-day soldiers wielding modern-day assault rifles, driving modern-day cars.
Monster Hunter: Modern Warfare
I would be surprised if that date sticks. In the UK, at least, the possibility of a second lockdown is very real, which means that the cinemas would need to close again. They've pushed back the release date of the new Bond film again, so we could see something similar happen here.
Anyone getting Transformers vibes from the trailer?
Heck no. I didn't leave my home to see Bill & Ted, and that was a movie I actually wanted to see. I'm not going outside to watch this insult to a game series I enjoy. I'll just wait for next March for some REAL Monster Hunter entertainment.
I think this is the fastest I've ever been excited for something and then just immediately disappointed
"Call for the video game movie actress!"
Cant wait to go to Regal to watch it!
Oh wait.
Why do western video game movies always try to mix something completely unrelated to the source material to the point they might as well not use it?
Ah yes my favorite monster hunter weapon, the minigun
A modern monster hunter game would be cool and all but what the heck was that? That was worse then I thought it was going to be the cgi looks ok but the acting looks like they just when't and asked some ppl hey do you want to be in the next monster hunter movie? look I love monster hunter so to see it look like this is sad thank you west for ruining a good concept, Cuz the call of duty weapon thing is cool but it looks like its done very poorly, will just have to wait and see hey it might be good (not really) but hey video game movies don't ever do well anyway.
Well.. I'd say her role in The Fifth Element is more memorable.
Also this looks exactly like those RE movies, which means: bad.
Just throw remote bombs in its mouth. That is Molduga, right...? Wait, wrong game.
Guys, will you read the description before you start raging.
To me this looks like early in the movie before she is transported to the world of monster hunter. So it seams like she and her team is gonna get transported to another world and have a monster hunter tribe show them the ropes.
Not too different from Avatar I guess. It could be alright, but probably not.
Could be worse I guess.
It could have been made by Uwe Boll.
Another Paul W.S. Anderson vehicle for his wife Milla Jovovich that seemingly ignores it's source material and just borrows the name for an immediate identity fix (imagine if this wasn't called Monster Hunter lol, it's the equivalent of a kids doodle during a maths class).
@Not_Soos same strategy works for this one tbh
Like many others I've been wondering how the "people and Tech from our world mix with the Monster Hunter World" approach would make sense. While pondering this I found that when we play a Monster Hunter game (or any game at all for that matter) this is exactly what happens: We are transported into a strange world full of fantastical creatures and people and must first learn the lay of the land and the rules of the place to be able to face the challenges laid out before us. What we know from the real world is of limited use and we can't use the tech and gadgets we're used to in real life. We can only use our wits and what the new world and its rules provide.
Suddenly this story idea doesn't appear so strange and stupid to me after all, because in a way it simulates what players of the game experience. Perhaps in an attempt to make it more accessible to people who haven't played the game or aren't gamers at all? I can't be sure, but I'm getting the feeling that this might even be the reason (or one of the reasons) why they've chosen this story approach in the first place. It might be an attempt to reach a broader audience than only the fans of the game (and they're possibly very aware that this compromise might irritate the "fans"). Either way, considering this I will not condemn the movie or judge it before I've seen it.
laughs manically No.. just no...😆
So other than the title, it's not Monster Hunter.
Oh those classic weapons.......guns!
@JunkRabbit Nice, I like the thought train!
This adaptation seems to be as close to the source material as the Super Mario Bros film from 1993.
@DaniPooo early in movie yes but they are already on the world (notice the great big Diablo)
I fear they have fallen for the age old mistake of thinking that to make it palatable for a wider audience and not just monster Hunter fans, they need to add in the big guns. What a pity. There are plenty people who will willingly watch movies set within a well developed fantasy world but this looks like they have taken fright and tried to ‘modernise’ it.
@Ooyah
Cineworld is closing nation wide.
The trailer is like a bad dream but it’s real.
Typical video game movie adaptation. In other words, it looks crap.
What a load of absolute tripe. Milla and her husband ruin these Capcom games they've somehow managed to get film licenses to. (Admittedly Resi 1 and 2 film were OK, they're good guilty pleasure films).
I never understand why they put so much money into a project like this to then hand or over to someone who clearly doesn't understand the source material.
Milla Jovovich and her husband have a kink for doing crappy movies of Capcom games.
The director is starting to come close to Uwe Boll depths of quality...even the Pope has more substance than this trailer.
One day movies won’t have to look like Transformers. One day...
Film 1: Pulled through a portal just before/during a fight with Diablos, modern weapons do nothing, everybody dies except MJ, she's saved by a hunter who shows her the ropes and they go off to kill the Elder Dragon that caused the portal, they win eventually and the portal closes trapping MJ in MH World.
Film 2: Quest to hunt monsters for portal parts, gathering a bunch of other trapped Earther's turned hunters on the way. Get home, Earth is trashed.
Film 3: Reusing RE trashed Earth sets, go hunt the monsters who got through before the portal closed, ending with an Elder Dragon that eats nukes for breakfast.
Cue MHW DLC
US film companies are sponsored (covertly) by the US military. Showing off the cool 'toys' you get to use helps with the enlisting campaigns. It's not-so-subtle subliminal advertising.
That's why they show up in nearly every movie and more importantly: always in a positive light.
I can't wait to not watch this.
Another vanity project for Milla Jovovich...made by her husband.
Quite frankly I was a bit in denial that this movie existed, blindly hoping it was all rumor and speculation.
Resident Evil was a great film...all films after that in the series were terrible.Didant have high hopes for this...good job I didant!
Brace yourselves for seven upcoming sequels no one asked for.
What a really big ***** pile of crap.
Hollywood: makes a video game movie that ignores the source material
Hollywood: so many people like this video game. Why didn't they like the movie?
Wait... This looks horrible.
I didn't think it would be possible, but it looks worse than thought it would.
Which theatres are going to be open, come December?!?
Lol they're rushing it out the door because they know nobody is going to like it and most people won't be able to go see it in theaters due to COVID. They're clearly embarrassed about it.
Look at all the people who can't read articles before they regurgitate the senseless mob anger around them. This scene is the beginning of the film before they realize their guns don't work. Whoa, it's almost like having context obliterates your entire snotty protest.
I sense a plot twist where they end up battling the monsters in the game universe or something down these lines.
I wish American film makers weren’t so cowardly. I want to see a world like the one in the games. Tribes or villages of people wearing all the MH gear or aesthetics of the game. Not this corn ball ***** where the US military is always involved and people from our world somehow go to the other world. How about it actually just takes place in the world of the game from the get go.
I'd need to see more before passing judgment as this clip is only a tiny glimpse, but...this doesn't look very promising. Going by the description, this at least seems early in the film. At least the Diablos looks cool.
Has/had potential, but fear that based upon director that it will be equal parts movies I have already seen blended and served as an action smoothie for me to drink and still feel like I need to think of what I need to eat for dinner later.
So... nothing to do with the games then.
It's like rampage !!
I think I will skip this one
Wow, Sony Pictures really don't want to show off much of this film, do they? This movie is two months away; usually this is when we start seeing more and more trailers. I'm starting to think even they realize this is gonna be a dumpster fire, and the less shown, the better.
As long as they find some way to make any monster look good then i will happily buy a ticket
If not then
I dont even need to finish my sentence.
Why is it impossible to create a movie adaptation of a video game that doesn't follow the whole 'people dumped in from the real world' scenario? It never works.
Putting aside wether this looks good or not (it doesn't), it is always a bit funny to me how many people complain about guns in this movie, when there are actual guns in Monster Hunter games already.
Not the same kind of guns, of course, but still guns
Of course they had to involve the military
JUST LIKE THE VIDEO GAME
pretty much what i expected from a game were your only goal is to hunt monsters. what do you expect from a game with literally no plot? there pretty much winging it. it looks like it could be ok. it def looks like the begining of the movie were they just encountered the first monster out of shock of it existing. So gotta believe the meat and fantasy of the movie is still left. its literally a taste without spoiling legit anything. im hopeful. Tho they shoulda put the avatar (blue ppl) or transformers director in charge. their movies rocked.
More of Paul Anderson's crappy action flicks, no thanks I'll wait for Capcom's CG-i version instead.
There is so much deep lore in the Monster Hunter games. So much yet a story about being "transported" to it from our current reality felt necessary. It's like if Peter Jackson started the Fellowship of the Ring with someone from our reality falling into a portal and poof they're at Middle Earth and the movie begins. I don't know I just feel with all the MH lore a story being 100% in MH would be a easy story to craft. Especially if you borrow ideas from the games about a big monster threatening a village(s). Or even follow a young hunter looking for his dad or something that went out on a hunt for a big elder dragon and never came back. A little cliche but still all in MH lore from the get go. Just my 2 cents I'm sure there are plenty out there who would disagree.
Because we Americans just won't go see a movie that doesn't somehow glorify guns and the military, apparently.
@link3710 Apparently they didn't learn from the Mario Bros. movie. Same concept and used a lot for whatever reason.
I love really bad movies. I really enjoyed the first Resident Evil film. But I just can't support something like this.
Firstly, it just isn't in the spirit of the source material. Like, I can be in to films that stray. LOTR and the MCU might not be 1-1 translations of their source, but they are good film series to watch and retain the spirit of the source. But the Anderson/Jovovich approach is just godawful interpretations that don't care about that spirit.
Secondly, it's like the Sharknado of video game movies. The Sonic and Detective Pikachu movies show a level of quality throughout their production, written and acting and that should be rewarded. If you're going to reward bad, it can't be a level of bad that tried to excuse its flaws by claiming it's intentional. Which seems to be how Anderson escaped critique with the later RE movies.
My favourite part of Monster Hunter is tanks and guns
I fondly remember using an assault rifle to kill Jaggis in Monster Hunter Tri
Nothing better than hunting dinosaurs in camo gear with guns
gonna watch it for sure, hope it will be good
The movie looks awful so far but I don’t know why you had to phrase it as
“ facing off against a large demon-like creature that looks like it's been pulled straight from the DOOM or Diablo series. To be fair, the IGN description does make mention of Diablos”
It makes it sounds like you’re unaware the Diablos as shown in the trailer is 1:1 to the games and has been in Monster Hunter since gen 1 on the PS2. You might know of course, but it came off otherwise.
Lmao that looks really bad.
Never played the game series but that does not look like anything I've seen in box art or game play videos. Hopefully this teaser is just from the first 5 minutes of the movie and then we can get into the Monster Hunter world. If true that was a crappy choice for a teaser. Otherwise it's just another case of: "Let's take a a property with an incredible world and dump the characters in modern day."
As bland and uninspired as the game it's based on.
But at least this movie probably has better gameplay.
I wish monster hunter was about scavengers or explorers who hunted monsters that were endangering villages and environments... not this Americanized ***** :/
Monster hunter could of made for a really cool interesting movie if the team went into it with an open creative mind instead of just tryna cash grab
I’d imagine they’ll keep the release date, that way they can blame its utter failure at the box office on the virus and not because it’s a complete betrayal of the source material that no fan of the games would want to see.
Ah, the 50 cal. Always my favorite weapon in the game!
@SpaceboyScreams Just what I was thinking, everyone complaining that guns and cars are in the trailer, and the description of the movie clearly says: an unexpected sandstorm transports Lt. Artemis and her unit to a new world.
I would blame to whoever decided to release that trailer, they should have shown armors, weapons and all they could without spoiling that much.
I like how everyone forgot this was the plan from the start. Everyone complained about it back then to. Nothing has changed they just went through with their plans
...Why do the whole "transported into a mysterious world" nonsense? Sure, it makes sense as to why they have real-world guns, but its pretty lame.
They were just better off making it an actual fantasy style movie, with characters actually set in the world, but yeah. Didn't have high hopes for this considering the director and the plot of this movie doesn't help.
@Severian didn’t you know Paul W.S. Anderson learned from Uwe Boll. :-/
@Totakekeke yessss, and not even that covertly.
The US army spends huge amounts of cash on lending props to Hollywood, and it's not like they don't want anything back in return: as you said, there's lots of pro-army propaganda and even entire useless subplots involving these "heroic" soldiers.
It kinda makes me sick to be honest.
Assuming Dune and Wonder Woman don't end up getting pushed back because of Covid, it'd be hilarious to see another bland Paul W.S. Anderson movie trying to compete with those two.
Worse than *****... didn't expect this to be so terrible.
this movie going to be one bad pile of crap wats next anderson going to direct a mega man movie starting his wife as the blue bomber.
@Richnj the first Resident Evil movie was decent though.
However, like you I love bad movies. Some of my favorites are B movie rolls trash like Ultra Violet, Daybreakers, and Vampyre Nation.
This, on other hand, can’t even be bothered to at least make it look like fantasy. :/
Well, seeing the Diablos doing his thing was cool at least...
Though I am not a fan of Monster Hunter (yet), I will say I'm sorry that you all have to go through this.
Wow! So accurate to the game. But it cant hold a candle to the persona 5 anime
wow, this is a total disgrace to the source material. I wouldn't even watch this if it was free.
I think the more important question is who keeps giving this director/writers money to keep producing terrible movies?
Sees headline*
WAIT WHAT
sees trailer*
WAIT WHAT
With the recent Bond film pushed back into 2021, I don't think theatres will stay open without any new movies coming within the next few months. Besides this December film, I've got a feeling that theatres here will close within next week, that is if the news outlets turn out to be true.
The studio is probably sacrificing what they think will likely bomb in a regular movie season to see if they can start enticing viewers back to theaters, take advantage of what little competition there is and if nobody bites, it was going to lose them money anyway.
This looks like it is going to suck.
My expectations for video game based films cannot possibly get any lower, and after seeing this, I am still disappointed. Why does it have to be this way, Hollywood? Are you too busy with pizza to make a decent film based on any video game?
To think Sonic did a better, more faithful jump to the silver screen compared to this. (post-reveal, post-redesign).
Monster Hunter can work well with modern-day guns and soldiers (if you still consider the 1970s as modern warfare).
Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker took a lot of inspiration from Monster Hunter right down to one of the control schemes being stated as based on the Freedom games in-game and even the monsters being optional bosses in some missions.
In return, some Metal Gear items appeared in Portable 3rd which is unfortunately Japan-only (though fan translations do exist).
But still, this movie looks terrible.
Out of the three Anderson directors, Paul W.S. Anderson is the worst and his films are mostly terrible with a few exceptions like Event Horizon and Soldier.
Wes Anderson (a legend among directors with his own distinct style that is often imitated but never duplicated) > Paul Thomas Anderson > Paul W.S. Anderson
@Zacattack99 even the pre-redesign looked better. And that's not saying much, because this looks terrible.
However, I will watch this when it comes to Netflix next year. These days I'm not going to a cinema to watch a movie.
why Hollywood can't stop destroying beloved video games franchises?why they can't take the live-action Sonic e Pokémon movies as a inpiration how to do a proper adaptation of a game to a movie?the Sonic e Pokémon live action movie showed to us how to adapt a video game franchise to a live action movie.
@Giancarlothomaz The classic movie adaptation dissonance. Buy a game licence to attract a large audience, but movies are expensive so it must please a general audience and must take no risks. So they follow a generic template loosely (badly) adapted to the licenced universe.
Your examples are not totally good examples as well. Sonic is just a generic super hero origin story movie template. Not bad neither unforgettable, nothing more (and don't forget the original design...). Detective Pikachu isn't much more groundbreaking, but it's a step above, because it has at least had a more intelligent pitch by going with a spinoff way more suitable to a movie adaptation. That allowed to dive into the Pokemon world without the games weirdness. But Pikachu pretty much carries the film alone ; a Ash based movie would probably collapse.
My brother and I are still watching it for the monsters. Diablos' screech is accurate as well as his looks. Whoever wrote this is clearly not a MH fan.
So you want me to go to the movies before a vaccine is out?
No thanks, hard pass.
Once again a video game based movie that has NOTHING to do with the game
...Yea I'm not watching that
Here's another piss poor American cannibalisms on a Japan game with Caucasian actors that makes this even worse then DragonBall. All became WhiteWashed. No wonder the studios are scrapping the bottom of the bucket here.
@Kamalen you have 0 understanding of what makes a Japanese Anime and Games that has staying power. You reply clearly shows you lack any understanding of why Japan Anime/Games are world wide loved and wanted.
Example take all the Japan Anime/Games Hollywood that whitewashed them and see the watching audience boo them and even worse look at the money they made which was pitiful to say the least. Even the critics boo those Hollywoodized movies tried to bank on the Audience being dumb of which they found out the hard way.
looks bad.
Seriously why machine guns. I'm a real fan of MH games and this is what l get.
@SwitchForce Why the hell are you talking about ? I only speak of Hollywood movies and nothing else...
What cinemas? They are closing in the UK.
@Kamalen typical Trolling....
No.
Pass.
WTAF is that?
Diablos gonna get you! lol
