Konami is reportedly open to outsourcing more of the company's gaming brands in the future, following on from GuruGuru's announcement of GetsuFumaDen: Undying Moon. The original game, Getsu Fūma Den, was released in 1987 as a Famicom exclusive.
According to Konami's Shin Murato, who is also the producer of Undying Moon, there's more to come. Here's what he had to say to JPGames when asked if the Japanese company was planning to outsource its IP to other companies.
“We are continually inspired by various indie titles, and how they innovate and produce exciting games. We felt that GetsuFumaDen would be an interesting IP to bring back to follow this indie approach, and so we decided to contact GuruGuru as we know the team well.
“They had been exploring new approaches for graphical design and thought they would be a great fit for this IP. It also helped that there were fans of the original GetsuFumaDen game within the GuruGuru team. In terms of other collaborations, please wait for future projects like this!”
Although there probably won't be much information about these "future projects" any time soon, last month it was discovered Konami had renewed trademarks for Castlevania and Metal Gear Rising in Japan. It's also apparently got some new projects to reveal in the coming months.
The remake of Getsu Fūma Den will be released on the Nintendo Switch in 2022. Until then, tell us what other Konami IP you would like to see make a return. Leave a comment down below.

That is awesome! Getsufumaden looks great, so I have high hopes.
Okay how bout outsourcing Metal Gear to Kojima Production, Castlevania to ArtPlay, Silent Hill to Capcom, Goemon to Nintendo, Rocket Knight to Sega, Contra to SNK, and Suikoden to Square Enix. C'mon Konami give your IPs the respect they deserve.
Didn't Konami outsource one IP to Nintendo?
...I forgot its name...
@Ghost_of_Hasashi why would Konami give Silent Hill to Capcom...
Capcom already has Resident Evil
Well, we all saw what happened with Contra... let’s not get too excited
Konami just give Igarashi the rights to finish the 1999 Demon Castle Wars starring Julius Belmont. We the Castlevania fans are waiting for so long!
Or at least give the right to the guys that are making the fan game about it called Umbra of Sorrow.
It’s for the best for the future of the beloved Japanese back-catalogue: Konami, Hudson Soft, Sega, et al. Give it all to the fan-developers who are passionate and not fussed about making a billion dollars reaping trends to pay dividends
They need to outsource anybody applicable to get a PCENGINE/TURBO collection on Switch 'cause I ain't buying a stupid plastic box with a chip in it.
@Socar yeah Zelda
@anoyonmus Unless you want a Silent Hill pachinko machine it's best to just outsource it to Capcom or Tecmo, at least both of them still knows how to do survival horror games properly.
@Realness I mean, it really just depends on the competency of the developer. WayForward developed Contra 4, and that game is one of the best entries in the series. Arguably THE best.
Unfortunately, more often than not, they seem to farm their IPs out to companies that aren't a good fit for the material. That's what happened to Silent Hill after SH4. They kept having Western developers make new entries when they're not equipped to create proper Japanese-style survival horror experiences.
Well, this sounds like good news for Switch owners
@Ocaz No I meant that Konami licensed one of their IPs to Nintendo and this news I read from Nintendo Life
@Realness yes, Contra 4 was amazing. Too bad they stopped making new ones after that, huh.
They released an anniversary arcade collection that didn't include Frogger. Maybe they should outsource their decision making to anybody but themselves.
I mean. At this point, eff Konami.
Outsource away, Konami! They sure used to be one of my favorites. That feels like ages ago now. I'll take ports too!
@Ghost_of_Hasashi Outsource Goemon to Good-Feel. That's where many of the brains behind the series went. But then again, they are currently working on a Goemon-like game, which is good enough I guess.
GuruGuru team could have done a similar game without Konami's game IP. I honestly never heard of GetsuFumaDen, I was just interested because this game has such great artwork. Hope GuruGuru team gets a bigger piece of the pie if this turns out to be a success.
@Ghost_of_Hasashi Square? Honestly, I think that would be a downgrade for Suikoden. Personally, I’d rather see maybe Nippon Ichi do Suikoden.
Suikoden to whoever is passionate about it. Heck, I'd learn coding simply for the chance to do it.
All I want is a Suikoden collection…please 🙏🏼😢
Good news, they should have done this ages ago.
@Ghost_of_Hasashi I get you’re point about matching IP with established genre masters, but they’re not really indies, are they? 🙂
GetsuFumaDen remake is obviously an experiment, that’s going well enough so far for Konami to start looking around for other potential suitable indie partners. I’d rather they give more indies a chance than play boring and safe with the same old names (who mostly have their own IPs to concentrate on anyway)
@Ghost_of_Hasashi I would actually give Suikoden to the people who are making Eiyuuden Chronicle. But Square Enix isn't a bad choice either.
That said, I would definitely give Metal Gear, Boktai, Zone of the Enders, SNATCHER and Policenauts back to Kojima, the true heir to the throne of Metal Gear. And allow him to make Silent Hills while the other Silent Hill games would be from Capcom. Kojima should remaster SNATCHER and Policenauts.
An uncensored SNATCHER remaster like what happened with Famicom Detective Club but with a retro anime aesthetic similar to SNATCHER rather than FDC's more modern anime approach, maybe get Studio Ghibli to do the new art for SNATCHER since they are the best when it comes to the retro anime style, to the point that they even filter their more modern films to look like analogue 35mm film, even their latest 3D CGI film had a 35mm film filter.
Policenauts remaster with ultra high resolution HDR scans taken from the original illustrations and film negatives with an English translation would also be amazing. The game was made with hand-drawn illustrations and paintings for the sprites and backgrounds which were digitally scanned and the anime cutscenes were made on analogue 35mm film. Ridiculously high resolution scans of the original sprite and background elements as well as a 4K or 6K remaster of the original 35mm negatives (preferably without DNR since many anime 4K remasters use heavy DNR that ruins the films) would make Policenauts look amazing and filmic, especially with HDR that would make the illustrations and animation just pop out.
Boktai 1 - 3 and Lunar Knights remasters with the sensor thing being replaced with some functions that can track the weather and time of the location that would affect the fill rate for the ammo of the Solar Gun.
Every outsourced Contra game has been mixed IMO, the PS1 games are very underwhelming, 4 was bland as water, ReBirth was pretty good, Rogue Corps was halfway decent. I never played Uprising so I can't say much. Outsource Gradius to Treasure again, they only have some level of competency with shoot em' ups. As for other series, we all know it's Gyruss ReBirth time! (Also, bring back Rocket Knight already.)
I have ZERO faith in anything relating to any Konami property. ZERO.
@hakjie11 You should definitely try it. One of the best games on the Famicom.
@Socar Yes, Momotaro Dentetsu was outsourced to Nintendo in 2015, for a 3DS game I think. But last year's Momotaro Dentetsu was developed and published by Konami.
@Ghost_of_Hasashi Contra to SNK? Why? Contra should be outsourced to Joymasher, they've already made a Contra homage that is better than most Contra's.
@Socar That was Momotaro Dentetsu, but it was only the 3DS game. If I remember correctly it was apparently developed by Valhalla Game Studios, Devil's Third developer.
EDIT: I didn't see it was already mentioned.
On topic: I'm open to this idea if it means more Hudson Soft IPs making a comeback. I'd like to see the return of Adventure Island, Bonk, Milon or Bloody Roar.
@Ghost_of_Hasashi Tecmo has Fatal Frame which is also co owned by Nintendo. Capcom had RE so no chance.
Better they give it like Bloober Team
@Ghost_of_Hasashi I'd rather see Silent Hill back in Toyama's hands at Bokeh Game Studio, honestly. He's been absent from the franchise long enough to possibly bring a fresh perspective, while still being firmly planted in what made the series great.
@YANDMAN Or WayForward. Contra 4 was dope.
Please announce a new Castlevania game. It’s always been one of my favourite franchises. 2D or 3D, Konami or outsourced, classic or metroidvania, I just want to see another title (that isn’t for a mobile device).
What about letting the studio behind the Outlast games, Red Barrel, take a shot at Silent Hill?
I mean let's be honest: after RE6, Capcom definitely looked at Outlast for inspiration for RE7.
BRING THEM ALL!!!!
Reminder that Konami has no reason to outsource Metal Gear when the majority of the Metal Gear team still works there.
@Hydra_Spectre Kojima does not want Metal Gear. There's also no reason to give him ZOE, he didn't make that series.
@xxx128 It is. They co-developed it, didn't just give the whole thing to GuruGuru.
Interesting news actually
It's sad that the best thing Konami can say about their games is that they will not be making them. Lets face it, Konami is not a games developer anymore, its just a company that happens to have some of the oldest gaming IP locked in a cupboard in the back of one of their Casinos.
I'd eat up some more Mystical Ninja games if given the proper treatment.
Wonder how they feel about the turtles in time remake.
Please give Contra to a more competent developer, and make a new Parodius, but also #FuKonami
Just give us silent hill remake or at least silent hill ports. On switch
And PES too, Konami on switch
@Ryu_Niiyama question?
Is this a remake or a sequel?
Silent Hill by Bloober Team
