This week, Obsidian Entertainment's anticipated action RPG The Outer Worlds launched on every modern platform but the Switch. So, what's happened to the Nintendo release?
According to a new press release from the game's publisher Private Division, the hybrid version of the game will be arriving in 2020. Yep, so next year...
GamesRadar speculates it could take up to five additional months to bring the game to the Switch, based on the time it took Virtuos to port Dark Souls: Remastered across to the platform. If this was the case, Switch owners could expect it by around March next year.
The fiscal year for Take-Two (Private Division's parent company) also ends in March 2020, which could be another reason to make it available then.
Were you hoping to get your hands on the Switch version of The Outer Worlds before the end of this year? Are you happy to wait until 2020? Tell us below.

That's fine, as long as it's as good as it can be on the Switch. Hope for a little less blur than Witcher, even if the other settings are downgraded.
Too much to play right now, so I can wait.
@Jayofmaya I agree. I don't mind waiting either, if it's a good port.
We can only hope so. Perhaps I will be done with The Witcher 3 by then......probably not because I don't want this game to end!
That's OK by me as long as it's a good port as its' gotten pretty good reviews so far.
I’m fine if the end result is worth it. Take whatever time you need guys.
I'm swamped in games as is. Although if they launch around March, they're SOL on my end. I'll be knee-deep in FF7R and Animal Crossing. And then Cyberpunk the following month. So I hope it's a February release!
Don't mind waiting, having this on a hybrid device will be worth it.
With my current backlog, I'm willing to wait and enjoy the Switch version.
However by the time this comes to Switch in March of 2020, it will be $19.99 for PS4 and Xbox. I'll probably end up with the Xbox version since I rarely remove my Switch from its dock.
@Ralizah hopefully the ff7r is better than the original. Eek that's overrated heep aged poorly
Yeah that's fine
I think we all got enough on our plate as it is.
@graysoncharles
Was this ever specifically slated to be coming to the Switch in 2019?
All I could find was the announcement trailer with no specific timeframe other than “following” the release of the other versions and a “Coming Soon” from the Nintendo Direct.
I didn't even realize this was coming to switch. I tried it out on my desktop though Microsoft's game pass, and it runs pretty badly even on lowest settings. Now, I do need a new PC, but my desktop is still more powerful than at least the base ps4 and xbone, let alone the Switch.
They'll have to work some serious magic for this to work.
I expected it to come next year around May, honestly. No clue how I came up with that month. I’ll likely wait, this is a game I want to play without TV shackles not achievement/trophy distractions.
I might double dip and also get it on PC, I’m sure this one will be one to play multiple times, but I also have one hell of a backlog to go through, so no rush.
@BLD We're outta luck then because this is a sci-fi game and not a fantasy game. So, no magic.
I don’t enjoy most FPS games on switch unless I’m playing with my Pro Controller— so it would make no sense for me to play this on Switch when I have game pass to play it for free. Sometimes I wish I had the Xbox One X, cuz this game is certainly pretty on my S
@BLD Heh. Was just in a thread on another site, where everyone was gushing how optimized it is, and how well it runs on low specs. I'm due for an upgrade myself, but still can pull 1080 and 30fps on high from it. Not the best optimized game ever, like those other folks were saying, but still well done. I think itll be fine on Switch.
Been playing om Xbox. It's worth the wait. The game is everything I wanted it to be. If they do a good job on the port it'll be a must play
Playing this on Xbox and it is fantastic, an absolute blast.
I'll gladly wait. Too many games already.
It looks awesome, I have no problem waiting to see the quality of the Switch port. I'll take a graphics downgrade for the options to play handheld and/or with gyro aiming. If the port happens to be terrible then I'll just pick it up for PS4 and the price will probably be reduced by then anyway. It's a win-win!
I hope it'll be worth it since I decided to forgo purchasing the game until then. Worst comes to worst the Switch version will bomb then at least I still have my PS4 to fall back on and hopefully at that time the game has also gotten some of its possible bugs patched and maybe even some cool DLC, I dunno.
Since I use my switch to play mostly first party games, plus a port now and then (with very stable fps and relatively clear graphics without considerable downgrades/blur) I won't be getting this just as I didn't get the Witcher. These games are meant to be played on more powerful systems(in my opinion), so I'll leave my switch for polished first party titles and an occasional impeccable port.
Which is good. You know sometimes it's better to way a bit longer... most DLC will be released as well right after release on other hardware and buggs will be fixed
I love Obsidian, and I'm really looking forward to playing The Outer Worlds when it comes to Switch, but I would've been shocked if it came out in 2019. There's no way they wouldn't've released a date by now if it was coming out in the next two months.
Better for it to come out later anyway. I'm still finishing up Dragon Quest XI, I have like one and a half more playthroughs of Fire Emblem: Three Houses to get through, and a new Pokemon game out in like three weeks, and Tokyo Mirage Sessions in January. I won't have time for The Outer Worlds till like March anyway (and that still seems like an optimistic estimate of when it'll be out).
I'll wait. I barely have the time to touch my PS4 let alone play a sprawling RPG on it.
not very suprising
Just use a 32gb cartridge like The Switcher and you got my 60$.
I'm playing this through Gamepass right now and it would fully be worth the money if I had to pay full price for it. Some minor framedrops here and there on the base Xbox One though, so expect framedrops on the switch version as well.
It is a fun game though! Get it on another console if you have one, keep your eyes on it if you want the Switch version.
Deffinetly worth the wait!
I wait and if it is, cool, if it's a crap port it will be £20 on ps4 by then. I'm only playing portal, sleeping dogs and bastion for the first time just now, I think I'm patient enough to wait until 2020 for this!
Given the Switch version was the one I was interested in getting, this is definitely a disappointment, but I guess if that's what it takes, then that's what it takes.
From what little I've played of it, it seems like a solid RPG so far. Also, I haven't played Fallout: New Vegas so this type of RPG is new to me.
Wasn't even expecting it this year.
Just started PS4 version. Only 20GB with no updates, expected it to be bigger. Should fit on 16GB Switch cartridge.
@BLD
Im playing it through game pass on pc aswell and it isn't running great even though my pc meets the settings alright! I changed it to windowed setting instead of full screen and it seems to run a little smoother. Maybe worth a shot. Might not work but thought I'd suggest it lol
It'll be worth the wait, currently playing it on PC via gamepass and loving it! It's what I hoped Fallout 4 would be. On that note I'd love Fallout New Vegas on Switch, the best in the series.
Running great on my PC, I'm getting between 120fps to 190fps.
I’ll wait. If I like it on Game Pass, I’ll buy it on my Switch next year. I’d rather they take the time to bring it over right.
I really wish that the Switch was powerful enough that it could handle all multi plats with no problem so we can get same day releases as all the other consoles. I love my Switch, but Nintendo's next gen (or Switch Pro) can't come soon enough.
Wait. This is definitely coming out for switch though?? As long as it’s a well done port, I’m waiting for it rather then getting it on ps4
Wasn't this known when it was announced it would be coming to Switch?
Since this is my only console, I don’t expect I will play it before that. And I am interested in playing it.
For me, nah, because gamepass is a thing. Like, I think the answer for me will always be "Is it on gamepass and eventually stadia?".
This is definitely one of those games to get on PS4 or PC to be honest...
@isellpixels yep, I'm going to be playing this on my gaming laptop, no need to wait there 🤷♂️
complete bs this game should have been released yesterday along side PS4 and Xbox this just proves these third party developers only care about Sony and Microsoft they clearly dont care about Nintendo
@KBuckley27
Most likely the decision to port came well I to their development cycle. Probably earlier this year. From what we have seen from Volition and Panic Button, you gotta give them a good year to make an amazing port.
Does anyone have a link to the press release? I don't doubt the article, but I'd like to see the source for myself.
I’m really okay with this. Not to mention Virtuos is doing it and they like to put in Nintendo specific features.
Too much on my plate to play this at the moment, perhaps by then I'll be ready and perhaps even play it on the Switch (if it's a good port)
From what I've read online, its not very good anyway
Not tried it myself yet though
I'm currently enjoying it on my pc through gamepass but would love to play it more on the go . So I can't wait for it to come to switch.
Performance at the moment is not great, I'm playing on PC with a RTX 2080 at 1440 and at times it struggles to hold 60 fps (gamepass version). Its clearly not a problem when playing on a supped up PC but will need a lot of tuning to get it running on well on the switch. Its a good but not great looking game and I would have expected to top out over the 144 of my monitor. That all said it is a fantastic game, It takes me right back to the glory days of RPGs. I already know I will replay this game many times playing different roles. For RPG fans this is a solid 9/10 or even 10/10.
Playing on Xbox one x. Gfx are mediocre at best - some of the stuff on the x in 4K is amazing but this isn’t anywhere near that quality.
Game is very good though .
It's not being released until next year on Steam... stupid Epic Store exclusive.
Love it on PS4
Ditch Epic, patch out some bugs and improve the performance. That'll sell me on the Switch version. The game froze and eventually crashed for me in the opening cutscene. It was so bad that I couldn't even get it to close with task manager. I just had to wait for it to close itself. Then once I restarted it and got through that it proceeded to freeze and stutter roughly every 30 seconds. But to be fair once I iocked the frame rate to 60fps it started running just fine. It has a really great story and rewarding progression. I'm loving it so far even though I'm only a few hours in. I'm running a stealthy, charismatic engineer right now (lol). I only got the game because j forgot to cancel my Xbox gamepass subscription too (for pc) 😂
Part of my $5 PC Game Pass (great game so far)... Not worth an extra $55 and 5 months wait to play on Switch.
Ill Play something else on the bus.
If it's not a decent port, the PS4 version should be somewhat cheaper by then so I'll grab that instead.
@Mountain_Man You can also play it for $1 on PC with Xbox game pass.
Switch just seems to be the console to play all the games I have already played to death.....at a greater price.
Downloading as we speak. No way I can wait till next year as I'll be waiting on the Ps5 by then
No rush.
This years release list is getting pretty cramped anyways. Hundreds of hours to go with Witcher 3, Luigi's Mansion coming up and Im not even done with Fire Emblem...
The more I play this the more I think how this is a perfect switch game. It’s a true classic RPG - combat is clearly part of it but there is so much more with strong emphasis on the dialogue and story.
It’s going to be amazing playing this handheld.
Think the sequel could be a big system seller for Xbox as well - reckon they will back obsidian big time on it
I've been pretty excited for this game, but like most others, I'd rather wait and have it be great, than get it now and have hiccups. Plus with all the Tokyo Mirage stuff posted lately, I realized I have a few Wii U games I need to finish as well. Soooo next year is all good.
5 months huh? From when may ask? Considering Dark souls was already a game that was published years back with an outdated engine and software, the outer worlds devs would've had this in testing for the last year to look for bugs and anything out of the ordinary. So shouldn't they have been able to work on a Nintendo port during that time. So say if the game was ready in July, and was just awaiting release, then by all technicality's it should be done by January 2020, unless the company felt Nintendo doesn't take priority in game releases in the first place therefore being outranked by the competition.
@Finlderp

That's odd, did you try ending the process instead of the application?
I’m pretty sure nobody expected otherwise. If it was only going to release like a month later, they would’ve just released them all at the same time.
But I can wait. I’d much rather play this on Switch. And I appreciate them letting me know before the game released so I could cancel my preorder and hold off, rather than conning me into having to double dip, a tactic all too commonly used.
I’m neck deep in so many great games I haven’t the time for it anyways. Can’t stop playing The Witcher 3, and still need to get back to Dragon Quest XI S, and Divinity Original Sin 2 (those three games alone could last well into 2020), plus Astral Chain, Ori and the Blind Forest, Luigi’s Mansion 3, Pokémon Sword, Assassins Creed 4 and Rebel (with gyro!), Alien Isolation (with gyro!), Atelier Ryza, Yooka Laylee Impossible Lair, Zelda Link’s Awakening, Overwatch (which I still want to get into like Splatoon, since it also has gyro, yay!), Torchlight II, Daemon X Machina (which I love, don’t care what anyone says, the gyro makes it a blast to play), Sniper Elite III (also with gyro!), heck I still need to get back to Mario Maker 2, God Eater 3, Tales of Vesperia, Dragons Dogma, and even games from last year like Valkyria Chronicles 1 and 4, the list goes on and on.
So ya. 2020 is good. Take all the time needed. Make it solid like Witcher 3 is and I’ll happily play when the time comes.
Was holding out to play this on Switch, but can't wait that long. Downloaded it on PS4 last night and LOVING EVERY SECOND OF IT!
But I can already tell it's the kinda game I'll play twice. Do a different character build, try new routes, yada yada. Happy to double dip when it hits Switch
@WhiteTrashGuy they announced a Switch version almost 3 months ago they could have gotten started and maybe it would have been about half way done and potentially released this year wouldn't be shocked if they haven't even started work on the Switch version because again who the flip are Nintendo compared to Sony and Microsoft to these Third Party Developers
@Savino yeah yeah Roam wasn't built in a day yet they had almost 3 months to get the Switch version possibly half way done
@F1R3F1Y "You can also play it for $1 on PC with Xbox game pass."
Two problems: 1) I use Linux; 2) Even if I didn't, I would never buy an Xbox Game Pass. I'll just patiently wait for it come to one of my preferred platforms.
Playing on game pass. I’m rather bored with it and surprised by the amount of texture pop in. The story was touted to be ambiguous and morally grey but 20 hours in ...it really isn’t. I’ll likely get it on sale when it hits switch to support obsidian but so far I’m not having fun.
@KBuckley27 If only they didn't have to do alot of work to down port it to the Switch then maybe it could be out now, with the other versions.
As long as they do a good job on the port I’m not to bothered having to wait.
This is on Gamepass on PC and Xbox, so you can play it now if you like. It's a solid 60fps on PC with everything on Very High or Ultra, although even then there's a lot of object pop and texture pop in.
This can be summed up as Fallout set in the world of No Man's Sky with bits of Bioshock thrown in. It's massively derivative and essentially devoid of any ideas of its own. That said, it's also much more polished than any Bethesda game, so if you want Fallout without the bugs and a more colourful (which is to say, often purple) world, then give this a go.
@Mountain_Man
Your loss. Gamepass is an absurdly good deal.
Good. Because I have way too much to play already.
Although I also have Gamepass
That's fine, I will have time to finish witcher then.
I want it all on one card though.
@ramu-chan $180 a year for the privilege of renting games on your PC?
You and I have a different understanding of what constitutes "an absurdly good deal". The Outer Worlds will eventually come to one of my preferred platforms. I can be patient.
I'm good to wait. I've still got Dragon Quest XI to get through, and Luigi's Mansion 3 is incoming tomorrow, not to mention Pokemon Sword & Shield & I'm still working through Link's Awakening. I'm also hoping that I'll be getting Switcher 3 as a Christmas gift so I have more than enough to play to keep me busy.
@Mountain_Man Fair enough. The game pass has been no hassle for me, and I got to test out a few other interesting games that I had previously overlooked.
