The coronavirus outbreak – officially known as COVID-19 – has already impacted the production of the Nintendo Switch in China and forced certain game companies operating within the country to delay upcoming game releases, and now it's reportedly linked to increased sales of Ring Fit Adventure. Oh, and mass shortages of the popular exercise game worldwide.
You see, as a result of everyone in China having to isolate themselves in their homes, there's been an increased demand for Nintendo's latest workout game. On the downside, this sudden sales surge has resulted in mass shortages around the globe, as Chinese resellers buyout any stock they can get their hands on in huge quantities and then sell it for well beyond the suggested price. Niko Partners Senior Analyst Daniel Ahmad notes one other contributing factor – viral videos showcasing the game.
If you're wondering how it's even possible for Chinese residents to play Ring Fit Adventure when it isn't officially available in the country yet, they can still import games from outside of this region and play them on their special Tencent Nintendo Switch. Switch models in other parts of the world, however, can't play games from China.
Ring Fit Adventure isn't the only Switch product impacted by the coronavirus outbreak. Earlier this week it was reported production of Animal Crossing-themed Switch console in Japan had been affected, knocking back pre-orders to 7th March. Nintendo's original model system sales have also taken a hit in this week's Japanese charts.

Legend has it if you score high enough in Ring Fit Adventure, then your body will be restored to its original state.
@Obito_Sigma Then all.the workout will be for nothing
@mazzel that's the beauty of it, it's like a monkey paw curse
People have been complaining about shortages worldwide for weeks now. I'm guessing there was an overdemand problem even before this started.
Let's make that money baby!
Well, at least one positive thing came out of this terrible situation.
So China can pilfer our game stock, but we can’t do likewise?
That’s ridiculous.
Also, will Nintendo be seen to act against these scalpers?
@HappyMaskedGuy calm down man, people are literally dying of disease. we can do without a video game.
@HappyMaskedGuy Pilfer? They’re human beings with just as much of a right to play the game as you.
Well, I'm glad that they can still find comfort through such difficult times.
@nessisonett Scalpers you mean?
@Borngis I’m not talking about the victims of Coronavirus. I’m talking about the scalpers taking advantage of the situation.
@HappyMaskedGuy Fair enough. Your comment read differently from how you meant it. I see it’s gone now.
"Global shortages," that sucks, I was hoping for one for my birthday next month. Hopefully the virus can be contained soon. Sorry to disappoint, scalper scum, but I shall patiently wait for a restock and a retail price attached to it.
@Obito_Sigma Sounds great, I have a nasty cough.
People have to find some way to pass the time.
The connection between coronavirus and interest about a videogame is stupid. Stupid are also the people here on Nintendo Life that permitted this VERY BAD WRITTEN article to go live.
Stopping a virus can't be done by getting a work out, sadly. But it might help in recovery of one. Also I can see people buying "fitness" stuff in panic.
Haven’t seen this at standard retail price in at least a month - which is a shame as I was really interested in getting it - but people confined to their houses for weeks on end would admittedly get more out of it than I would. Cabin fever is not fun.
Price markups are obviously unfortunate though. I wonder if Nintendo has plans to actually release the game domestically so people aren’t dependant on foreign imports and third party sellers. I mean, it’s not as bad as basic commodities and masks being resold for many many times their original value, but it’s not great.
@sanderev I don’t think it’s being bought as an antidote the virus itself, so much an antidote to the quarantine procedures. I don’t know the exact numbers, but the number of people unable to leave their home (healthy or otherwise), far exceeds the number of actual infected.
Being confined to a single building without entertainment or exercise for extended periods of time is bound to make anyone start feeling a little stir crazy. Ring Fit Adventure, being both an entertainment and exercise package, is probably as much an investment in mental health as it is physical, if not more.
The switch has been on sale in china since close to launch. I may have spotted a PS4 or Xbox in one of my trips , I don't recall but seeing the Switch for sale is common. I remember the price being really high so grey imports in the past no doubt but, at least in Shanghai, Beijing and Shenzhen they have always been openly for sale.
@Maxz Its not just the areas that are under quarantine, my colleges tell of the streets of Shanghai being deserted. They send the occasional photos of major places in a city of 44 million being absolutely empty. People are not going out and getting bored.
If Nintendo was smart, they could really capitalize on this situation in China.
"Ring Fit Adventure 2: Exotic Animal Eating Edition"
Surprised I haven’t read a comment citing the typical “Nintendo secretly planned to short stock” conspiracy theories.
Corona chan keeps messing things up
@Cosats what is so bad about the article? It’s a thing that is happening.
@Cosats It's really helping for those who frequently jogs or going to gyms, especially with how people are quarantined in their houses.
In China, and just bought it myself. After a month of quarantine and teaching online with no end in sight, it'll be nice to have an outlet for this.
@HobbitGamer This article is wrong for many reasons: 1. Use of the Coronavirus as a clickbait - 2. Use of the Coronavirus to advertise a particular product on purpose - 3. Ιmpiety to patiens - 4. Poor justification and means of proof that comes out of just a single tweet. - 5. Poor writing on behalf of the writer.
Wow. China paying big premiums on official video games. That's big news by itself.
Is the eShop still pretty barren over there?
@Pod
Yep. Just NSMBU DX.
Mario Kart 8 DX and Mario Odyssey were supposed to launch in January in China, but coronavirus presumably delayed that.
@westman98
Mario Kart 8 is an infection liability, what with all the getting together on the couch and shouting, so maybe it isn't all bad ^_^;;
@mazzel Pretty sure the implication with a little sarcasm by Obito is that this will cure the cornavirus
@dougphisig lol I know, so I answered with a joke, too, that it will mean all.your muscles are gone and the belly fat is back the internet... Source of misunderstanding
@Cosats Just searching "china ring fit adventure" in Google brings up 7 other websites that feature an article about an increase in sales for the title while cities in China are under quarantine. This isn't clickbait or using an illness to sell a product; These are articles showing a correlation between a densely populated geographical area that has had folks' daily routines entirely disrupted and resulted in large numbers of people not even going outside, and the scarcity of a video game that just happens to allow indoor exercise.
Also, not every story regarding Covid is required to show reverence to those affected. Is it awful, this illness? Absolutely. It's always awful when people are negatively affected by something. But just like there isn't a bunch of articles regarding the 16,000 influenza deaths reported for this season in the United States alone, this is not something that's needed nor even pertinent to this particular article.
There is more than a single tweet for this story. Reading the article and noting that there is more source material shows that. I'm not really sure what you mean by poor writing, because the whole thing seems coherent to me.
But, to each their own, I suppose.
