Now that Shovel Knight Showdown and King of Cards have been released, Yacht Club Games is focused on other projects.
One of these games is the 8-bit ninja platformer Cyber Shadow. Aarne Hunziker from Mechanical Head Studios has been developing this title for the past decade and it's now being polished up under the watchful eye of Yacht Club.
So far, we've heard about the game's story and the announcement trailer showed off plenty of platforming action. It's not often you learn about the length of a 2D sidescroller prior to its release, but during a recent interview with Nintendo Enthusiast, the game's creator spoke about how long it takes to beat the current build:
Personally, I can complete the game in a few hours, but playtesters are taking anywhere from 4 to 10 hours to reach the ending. This is not counting feats / achievements.
Given the type of game Cyber Shadow is, we'd say anywhere between 4 to 10 hours is a good amount. A lot of players are likely to find themselves replaying levels in an attempt to perfect their runs, and as noted by Hunziker, there's plenty of in-game milestones to work towards as well.
When it does arrive, Cyber Shadow is expected to be priced at US$14.99. At the moment, though, there's no word on when it will be released. How do you feel about "4 to 10 hours" worth of gameplay? Tell us below.

I don't care about game length as long as the game is fun.
Normally, I'd wait for these kind of games to go on sale before diving in, but I'd make an exception solely based on how well they nailed Shovel Knight.
That's about the length of Shovel Knight, so yea it would be good enough for $15
It just looks like a retro style action-platformer, I wouldn't expect anything too long.
The ninja theme is not as good as the original Shovel Knight theme. If it was not made by the same devs, I probably wouldn't watch the whole trailer.
That’s only before they add 3 more campaigns
I'm totally fine with that. I prefer 8-10 hour games as it is. I Make exceptions for certain games or franchises though.
@hakjie11 it is not the same devs though
That's great, I believe that's even longer than the old Ninja Gaiden and Shadow of the Ninja NES games as well which this was inspired from.
Looks like The Messenger
I must say I'm extremely excited for this! Robots? Check! Ninja's? Check! Awesome platforming action in a retro 8/16-bit style? Double check!
As for length any decently sized 2D platformer should be no less than two hours long. Heck super mario world probably only takes an hour or so for any halfway skilled player and it's still awesome! It's the gameplay and fun factor i care about. Nice graphics certainly doesn't hurt either!
10 hours for an action game is mighty fine, for a pure A-to-B platformer, i'd even say that's on the longer side.
And the game looks pretty great overall, even though i'm kinda burning out on the cyber ninja motive.
But it looks like it has the right amount of gimmicks and robust mechanics to be a solid game on its own.
And it helps freshen up Yacht Clubs overall portfolio a bit.
Fine by me. I love long RPGs, but I can definitely appreciate shorter action platformers like this. Definitely looking forward to this one.
Completely forgot this game was still coming!
Looks intense! Great with some shorter games in between all the larger titles.
I just recently bought the physical Switch version of Shovel Knight. It's the first time I've played this game and the little I've played so far is promising.
This should be a hit with Ninja Gaiden fans experiencing withdrawal, but personally I've never been much of a fan of hard games.
The length, price and visuals are all on the money for me. The real test will be how it compares to The Messenger
Anyone heard when Shovel Knight Dig is supposed to come out? When they announced that they originally said late 219
I often fail to finish long games as I play something else for a bit and then never get back into the other game. Short suits me.
From watching on Twitter right now Ninja gaiden like games are hot. They all seem to take things from one another to make each one of their games indestinguishable.
After sinking 600 hours into Destiny 1&2, I finally saw the strings. Nowadays I like my games, like my movies, with a beginning, a middle, and an end. This game is not my bag, but there is nothing wrong with a short game.
Quality over quantity. The gameplay looks incredibly polished.
@The_Pixel_King : yeah my buddy !!!
The Messenger has a lot of self awareness and humor... Let's hope some twist is still hidden in the scenario, coz' the trailer seems really 1st degree ...
even if the gameplay will be solid (S.K.'s makers, we're not afraid they can polish a game), will it be soulfull ?
This looks gorgeous and I know this group KNOWS how to make awesome retro throw back games. My problem with this tho is that there is kind of an over saturation of Ninja Gaiden-esque looking indie games right now/or upcoming games where guy slashes through foes type stuff. It does not excite me even tho it does look gorgeous. A shame.
@tendonerd Ya this is sort of my gripe with the game. I'm a little disappointed it's another indie game like this. Not that being a Ninja Gaiden game is BAD. Great games and The Messenger was fun. I'm sure there are folks who haven't had a game like this in awhile and are now in for a treat with a load of them coming out. However it doesn't excite me much. Kind of wish it was something different looking... I'm sure it will play great though.
That makes me want to go dust off my megadrive!
My rule of thumb :
4-10 hrs gameplay would mean I will not pay more than £4-10 for title.
I relish quick experiences. Pretty sure it's to be on gamepass launch day, so I'll check it out for sure.
It's not the overall length that matters to me in an old school platformer, it's the replayability.
Some of my favorite games of all time can be beaten within the space of an afternoon, but they often offer different routes or different ways to tackle parts of the game.
If Mega Man X (or even Shovel Knight) was 20-40 hours for a single playthrough it would have outstayed its welcome very quickly.
I love how this feels like Ninja Gaiden in the NES Batman kind of environment.
@Desrever yacht club are publishing this game, not making it. That aside if the trailer doesn't make you want to buy it day one then nothing will. This looks far better than yacht clubs own offering.
yes that is plenty long enough and i for one cannot wait to buy this the absolute moment it appears on the eshop. This game looks absolutely incredible. I've been following it's creation for about three years and it's great that it is nearly here.
This looks EXACTLY how I imagined it would look when I read the title and developer.
And I absolutely ADORE the glitchy effect in the "How far will he go?" thing.
I am soooo over all the 8 and 16 bit retro revival. It was great for a while, reminding us that games were great before graphics ruled but yep, for me its done. I'm all for reviving some of the older genders of games. Hollow Knight is one of my all time greatest hits. But Hollow Knight also shows how to bring classic game play into the modern world.
I love games that don't overstay their welcome. I have little time and I would like to actually see the ending
@TooBarFoo Yeah that's where I'm at as well. The whole retro style indie revival scene has been interesting but I think I have my fill as far as that goes.
4 hours is pretty short. 10 hours is okay.
This game looks like it could be the best action platformer of all time, in the tradition of NES Ninja Gaiden, Shadow of the Ninja, Hagane, Run Saber, and 3DS Shinobi. It actually looks better than its predecessors.
The only competition it has on the Switch is Oniken, but that's some pretty stiff competition. Oniken is on the same level as all the games I mentioned above, if not slightly better.
Just here waiting... waiting to play this.
@TheWingedAvenger Thanks for the recommendation, I just may have to check out Oniken while I wait for this.
It's not the size of the game that matters.........
