Axiom Verge is a bit of a classic, and has been on various Nintendo systems including the Switch; we adored it in our review. It's not only an impressive 'metroidvania', but the way it implements 'glitches' into various aspects of its design is fascinating and has always helped it to stand out.
Axiom Verge 2 is certainly on various wishlists, with creator Tom Happ initially planning it for Fall 2020 before it was pushed to Spring this year. Unfortunately it is being pushed back again, with Happ telling IGN that it "will be better for the additional time." It's now due in Q3 this year.
A making of documentary for the first game, previously available on Steam or as a Blu-Ray in the Axiom Verge: Multiverse Edition, has also been made available to view for free on IGN. You can see some gameplay from a Spring showcase of the new game below.
We have a little longer to wait, but the odds are that it may be worth it.

With all the hundreds of metroidvanias already out there on the eShop at the moment, this at least is a relief. Take all the times you need Tom Happ.
Can't wait! This is going to be a complete time sink but in a good way.
I got a physical edition with all the bonus goodies from my brother-in-law, having never played it beforehand. I put the cartridge in, and basically stayed glued to my Switch the entire time until I beat it. It was absolutely one of the best Metroidvanias I've played since "metroidvania" became a word.
I sort of blew through it in a daze, so I might need to pop it in for another spin to refresh myself before grabbing the sequel, which I can definitely do before Q3.
Highly recommend picking up the original for anyone late to the party. Its in the eshop sale rotation every once in a while.
@Ghost_of_Hasashi I couldn't have put it any better. We are spoilt for choice when it comes to metroidvanias (good and not so good) so I will wait as long as necessary since I'm taking a break from that sub genre anyway.
This is disappointing, but not too surprising. And it’s totally fine. Do whatever you have to do, Mr. Happ! I’m sure this game’ll be great.
"Q3 this year". "We suspect it'll be worth waiting for".
Next year even. Still a one man show right? Pretty amazing.
No problem. Take your time. Get it right. I love Axiom Verge, and its sequel deserves to be as well made.
By the way, if anyone wants a short but sweet little game like this, I suggest Gato Roboto. I played through it in two sittings the other night and following morning and then replayed it again that night because I had so much fun with it.
@Desrever Dang, I really want one of those collector's editions, but they're expensive. Really glad I grabbed a Hyper Light Drifter one when I did.
Super excited for this
Gives me a bit longer to finish the original.
It's not like there isn't countless other games to play in the meantime, these guys should take all the time they need.
I'm very excited for this one and really hoping the soundtrack lives up to the original.
Not surprised at the delay, I bet Happ has some worthwhile additions planned. I love AV1 - its in my top 5 Switch games
Loved the first one! Take all the time you need. Meanwhile I'll replay the original.
Take your time. Now I just need news of Freedom Planet 2…
I sort of blew through it in a daze, so I might need to pop it in for another spin to refresh myself before grabbing the sequel
@Desrever Did you find all the notes/items and see the hidden ending? I don't mean to condescend, I'm sure you did if you're a Metroid fan, but just in case you haven't yet, I can highly recommend doing so...
A making of documentary for the first game... has also been made available to view for free on IGN.
@ThomasBW84 I appreciate you including this information, Chief!
Glad you guys all like it, I kept trying it over and over but just couldn't get into it. The sequel looks different enough that it might be a better fit for me, I'll have to try it.
Agree with these comments. Take all the time you need. Will be worth the wait!
I feel like the only person who doesn't like this game, lol. I respect it from a distance, have tried a couple of times for it to click, sadly it never has.
Hope it's worth the wait for the fans, a delay for quality purposes is always welcome.
take your time and make it the best game that you can. we don't need another cyber punk 2077.
Delayed, how will life as we know it go on.
I couldn't get into the first one. Which is weird because I know people generally love it.
That stinks. Looking forward to it nonetheless though.
@Desrever Man it's great when that happens, It's not often these days, though that's me not a shortage of great games, but gaming is never better than when it grabs you by the nuts and doesn't let go till your done.
These games are always better when the dev is able to take the time needed to get it right. The first game bought them plenty of time to work on this. No rush from me, I will be happy to see it release though.
Missed the opportunity to call it "Axiom Verge: Prequel" and grab some of that AVP googles.
I will patiently wait. Glad to have an update.
@COVIDberry I want to say I did, but can't recall what was different about it. I definitely remember breaking down and using a walkthrough at the very end, so something tells me I did.
Regardless, it definitely sounds like that will be the main focus on my next play through.
Really looking forward to this game. Tom's a legend and can take as much time as he needs.
@Giygas_95 I loved every minute of gato roboto! So good and great value if you can get it on sale. Fantastic game. Hopefully I get some time to play axiom verge before it’s sequel.
@Grim Hope you do get some time to play! Axiom Verge is really good.
