Re: Reaction: What Did You Think Of The Nindies Spring Showcase 2018?

TooBarFoo

I really like the switch as first call for indies but for the first time I saw nothing that caught my interest in this showing. Still looking forward to getting my hands on Hollow knight and flipping death. Going forward it seems the switch will be first target for many indie studios so will be looking forward to finding those hidden jems

Re: The Games Industry Reacts To The White House's Violent Games Showreel

TooBarFoo

It seems like a segment of the american population are so terrified of the world around them they can not cope with the idea they may meet someone who does not look/think/sound like they need guns to give them the courage to face each day. So instead of facing up to their owns fears they look for scapegoats to reassure themselves that they are not cowards. Enter Video games, the perfect patsy

Re: Video: Digital Foundry Considers "Nintendo Switch Pro" With NVIDIA Tegra 2 Processor

TooBarFoo

The next switch update will use a custom SOC. The X2 makes little sense, either in use nor to maintain production. With Nivida focusing its standard SoCs on AI (and their Jetson boards are great) as well as the switch being a proven hit they will migrate to a custom SoC. Expect better power consumption and solid 720 / 1080 resolution. Better than a base model ps4, just short of pro. But not going to happen until mid 2019

Re: Hackers Get Linux Running On Switch And Claim Nintendo Can't Patch The Exploit

TooBarFoo

Getting Linux to run on a arm processor means nothing in its self. It is in fact fairly trivial. And it will not run switch games. The switch runs a BSD variant kernel, similar to PS4, With Nintendo and Nivida building a library set against which games are developed. In order for installing a new OS onto the hardware to mean anything you would need the ability to port the libraries over to the new OS. This is not a trivial task. The other option is to emulate the existing environment but this has overhead so you can not emulate on the same hardware that is already being pushed to the max. It is in fact far simpler to find a exploit in current code sets that would enable you to bypass any authentication checks. When we first heard of a unpatchable exploit it sounded interesting but if this is it, its just nonsense anyone who has access to a SPI programmer, a day or two of spare time, a switch they no longer what to play games on and background in hardware development could have achieved this from day one. Personally until the switch drops in price a lot I if I wanted a arm based Linux tablet there are much cheaper android tablets I would hack it into first.

Re: Feature: Bugging Out With Hollow Knight's Team Cherry

TooBarFoo

I played a bit of this on the pc, it felt almost like a 2d bloodbourne. I don't like playing on the pc much so never put in many hours but have been looking forward to getting this on switch since I first saw it was coming. I did expect to see it a long time ago though. At least I hope after all this time it will run smoothly

Re: UK Pricing For Nintendo Labo Is Confirmed

TooBarFoo

I think those who see price as a issue don't have kids. A mid size lego is £70, it gets built, lasts a week and ends up in the lego box. Next week the kids want more lego.. Never ending. I get a shiver in my wallet every time i pass the lege box knowing the £Ks that have been spent to fill it.

Re: CPU Exploits Meltdown And Spectre Could Potentially Affect Nintendo Switch

TooBarFoo

Meltdown will not affect the switch, or at least it is very very unlikely to. The X1 has 4 A57s and 4 A53 cores. (See https://developer.arm.com/support/security-update) None are effected. To date most ARM processors effected are those Designed by Apple and Apple has taken many short cuts in its chip design with the intent of avoiding paying licence fees. You also need to run code on the system to exploit, so another reason not to expect, or want, a full browser on the Switch.

Re: Review: MUJO (Switch eShop)

TooBarFoo

This game raises serious questions for the future of the e-shop and I think it was well thought through for nintendolife to bring these issues up in the form of a review and not just a rant editorial piece as we have seen else where.

Re: Naughty Hackers Have Homebrew Running On Switch Now

TooBarFoo

Thing is this is gone and patched. No going back on versions, the switch uses a fuse burn every major update number to prevent backward compatibility . As the number of fuses are limited you can be sure that every time we get a full number update it is to close a number of security holes in the system. Seems Nintendo are doing a good job staying ahead at this point. I would presume that they would also compile in run time errors and auto updates within game code on all first party software. The current security system in use is a lot more up to date than that used on the Wii U and 3DS so I would not expect those levels of system compromise achieved on those, but time will tell.

Re: Guide: Give Your Switch's Download Speed a Little Boost by Changing the MTU

TooBarFoo

So 1500 is the max standard MTU Packet size on none gigabit Jumbo frame networks. The reason it is set at 1400 is tunneling may be used within the multiplay environment which adds an extra 4 bytes to each packet. This means each packet is split into two and then requires reassembly. This would add lag with multiplayer. While it is not sure that tunneling is used it is common within distributed platforms, Defaulting to a uncommon 1400 is due to a reason. Changing this setting does nothing, and has nothing to do with WiFi signal strength, just packet size. As someone who contributed to the network stack used in all modern OS I would strongly suggest if you play any multiplayer NOT to change this above 1476 if at all

Re: Review: RiME (Switch)

TooBarFoo

as others have already stated, don't expect much more on other platforms, my ps4 pro had a hard time this and i bailed after about 90 minutes. This was always a very poorly coded release

Re: Nintendo Gives a Teasing Glimpse of a New ARMS Fighter

TooBarFoo

I played about 30 hours before I put it down to play something else but this is the kind of game i will pick up again and again through the years and go though the motions of mastering a new fighter. I would think over the next 3 years I get a good 200 hours of play. If we have some quite release windows at least

Re: Nintendo Wants Everyone In Your House To Have Their Own Switch

TooBarFoo

We already have 3 in our house. I would have liked an option without the dock as we only have two tv but my son sometimes takes the spare to his mates house so its not a big issue. We also only mainly buy physical games so we can share although we ended up with 2 copies of mario kart we still like that better docked for multiplayer as the banter is better.

Re: Zelda: Breath of the Wild's Champions' Ballad DLC is Still Due This Year

TooBarFoo

I would much rather they release the dlc when and only when its fully finished and they are 100% happy. We have enough content being released in a buggy mess due to meeting marketing or other scheduled requirements in the games industry as it is. Nintendo has been on point with most its core releases this year and now is not the time to drop standards to meet shipping date of amiibo. With so much to play right now I like others would be happy to wait till next year.
