@Nincompoop "Exactly what you said, they are an indie company using Unity to get started. Now they should have enough money to build their own engine."
If they build the 3DS successor on the same architecture as the Switch to make porting between each console easy then it's a good move to keep the dedicated handheld business alive. I love my 3DS but it's not getting a look-in now I have a Switch, yet I know that's not true for everyone. The Switch's success is in no small part due to a steady stream of software and if Nintendo can keep that up then I'm a happy camper.
@Nincompoop "Now they finally have enough money to ditch Unity and build their own engine."
Why the hate on Unity? It's because of the open nature of Unity that games like this even exist. Small teams can get up and running without having to spend months/years building an engine and can concentrate on the game itself.
@mateq "Best game available on Switch, as far as I am concerned. I'll probably get hates for saying this, but Zelda and Mario don't even come close to how epic and interesting Hollow Knight is."
You won't get 'hates' but you haven't gotten any 'loves' either π
@Razzy "The hell happened to that model's arm, it looks like someone went waaaaay overboard with simplifying the geometry and it looks like something from quake 1."
I tried voice chat on Fortnite once. It was 5 minutes of a German child singing 'Help' by the Beatles and screaming when he was shot at. A great experience, I must say! π This is what I've been missing out on all this time. /s
@NEStalgia Yeah, you might be right about the interactive blockbuster movies only being on PS4. I got a loan of a PS4 Pro for a month and I really wasn't digging anything on it. Too much waiting around watching Uncanny Valley faces talk nonsense to each other. I just want to switch on my console and be able to play for 5 minutes. Games should be fun, but also convenient. If I have to watch for 5 minutes before I can even do anything I get bored very quickly.
This is good news. The lack of any tutorial has made my first few hours a lesson in frustration. It's a silly oversight as it would make the game much more fun for beginners. I've persevered and picked up a few tips from YouTube but if your game doesn't explain how to play it's badly designed in my opinion.
I have massive amounts of respect for Ubisoft. I think they're the best third party out there because of their diversity of experiences and they understand the importance of GAMEPLAY. Take note, other developers. Games are supposed to be fun, not treated like interactive blockbuster movies. Ubisoft, like Nintendo, get it. They're not perfect, and their reliance on churning out annual sequels to their big franchises isn't the best path to quality but they know how to make a fun game. Assassins Creed Black Flag is a massively underappreciated game. I spent months upon months just pirating my way around the Caribbean.
@SBandy "Seriously is it just me that has noticed the site has nose dived in quality over the past year or so?!"
It's not just you. I'm finding myself checking this site less and less (it used to be my go-to site for Nintendo news) They seem to be churning out articles at a rate of knots these days, but it's quantity over quality for the most part. 'I liked them before they were cool'
Oh god. This is all kinds of sad. A guy who loves Smash so much that he sends a bomb threat via email when it's taken away and subsequently the email isn't read for months. It's a modern tragedy of Shakespearean proportions π΅
@Jayvir "Too many characters play identical and are very unbalanced."
I agree with you on the clone characters point, but unbalanced? Smash in my opinion is the most balanced fighting game series ever. The fact that's it's so balanced with so many different characters and variables is even more impressive. I think the reason Sakurai works himself half to death is because he spends so long playing and balancing every character, once even damaging the nerves in his hand!
My two cents: best Direct in ages. No Metroid was a little surprising but there was enough good stuff in there to have me pumped for the next year. There'll be too many excellent games for me to possibly play, so what more could I want?
When my kids are watching cartoons, normally there are two or three Nintendo ads during each ad break. Labo, Splatoon, Arms and Mario Tennis are all over kids T.V.
@Desa "The offline play argument just doesn't really make any sense to me, but if someone would like to go in more detail about it, I'd love to hear it"
Well to put it simply, the Switch's big selling point is its portability. If you can't get a stable Wifi connection when you are outside your home, it kind of makes a game like Overwatch unplayable. Games like NBA 2K18 have been examples of this: games that are designed with a constant internet connection in mind as a legacy of their console/PC heritage. As soon as you put the console to sleep - even for a few seconds - the server disconnects and you lose your progress in NBA. I've done it several times in the final quarter of a really difficult game and lost the win. I have a PS4 too and was without internet after moving house and most games on it are completely gimped without a connection (Gran Turismo only lets you play Arcade mode and can't save any progress)
@TearyIsaac "Two words: Bad Optimization. I'm sorry, but if Nintendo can Make Breath of the Wild work with 13Gb, there's no reason why this one needs double the size."
Mate, look at this game beside Breath of the Wild and it's obvious why it's a bigger file size. The art style alone demands higher resolution textures. Also, Nintendo clearly uses witchcraft to make their games so small.
Just sort out the voice chat and matchmaking, Nintendo. It's shocking how difficult it is to set up a match of Splatoon 2 with my friends when we're online. How hard would it be to implement an invite system? Rocket League does it seamlessly.
@BensonUii "No it's not an oversight. You don't dock the switch upside down."
It's not an oversight, just a really bad design. With a bit more thought, they could have had the charging port halfway up, but still flush with the back of the device and it would have solved this problem. (I think @BonafideInfidel has a similar idea to me)
It seems more like a design shortcut to me than anything else, and very uncharacteristic of Nintendo. If they're making a peripheral to solve the issue, you know they realise their error now.
Waaaaaayyyyy too expensive for what is essentially moulded plastic. The placement of the charging port and the flimsyness of the kickstand are boggling oversights by a company which usually designs hardware so well.
It boggles my mind that Nintendo - a company which rightfully prides itself on hardware design - messed up so badly with both the kickstand and the placement of the changing port on the Switch. The kickstand is very difficult to open without a tool (credit card under the rubber bit works for me) and surely the charging port could have been moved up the back of the console an inch to allow for the cable to slot in?
Love the shmup genre but somehow I have never played this, and I've owned both the GameCube and Dreamcast. A rare and seemingly glaring blindspot in my gaming life. I'll have to get this for Switch now.
@Tibob "Now I'm convinced the best move would be including Nintendo characters Γ la Mario Kart. (maybe along with them folks from '64"
I'd have to disagree. Mario gets his face plastered all over everything and I think it turns some people off. I think they'd be much better going with official sponsors (Kawasaki etc) and real-life or even just realistic-looking jet skiiers. That was half of the appeal for me in the older titles: Wave Race plays like a Nintendo game but it doesn't necessarily look like one.
@Alto "SCAM!! Why did they even raise $1000+ already ?!"
Because NintendoLife has stupidly shared this scam with all of their readers, and the sarcastic tone of the article has not been picked up by everyone.
@CTMike "Lots of people apparently missed the tone of the article. It was very much 'this is a scam, feel free to mock'."
Although I can see this is clearly a scam, sarcasm is very easy to miss on the internet. I don't see why NintendoLife is sharing what is clearly a scam with their readers, even if it is in jest. I think there are people on here who have not picked up on the tone of the article and backed this thing already.
