While everyone's attention was firmly focused on another big fighting franchise making its way to Nintendo Switch in 2018 - *cough* Super Smash Bros. Ultimate *cough* - Bandai Namco confirmed that the 3v3 madness of Dragon Ball FighterZ is also headed to Ninty's hybrid hardware via today's Nintendo Direct.
Of course, the question for big ports such as this is always 'How does it look running on Switch?', and we've got the answer, courtesy of a direct feed in 1080p/60fps. Check it out below.
So that's how Dragon Ball FighterZ looks on Nintendo Switch, but what do you think of the footage? Be sure to keep it locked to Nintendo Life for all the best Nintendo coverage direct from E3 2018 over the coming days...

I'm actually impressed at how it runs so well on the Switch!
Usually, fighting games struggle being ported.
Looks good! Definitely picking this one up.
Is there a release window yet, besides 2018?
Guess I better take out another $60...
Ah well, less money on my wallet I guess
Looks amazing, I just wish it wasn't included in a highlight reel with another 15 games that were given around 10 seconds each. Terrible format, hope they never do this again
Sure, I like being broke...
Wow, really impressed with the port. Looks fantastic. Why was it only given 2 seconds on a sizzle reel?? Bizarre.
they got my money.
Ok but here's the big question. Should Mario get added as a character to FighterZ, or should Goku get added to Super Smash Brothers? Make your choice -_-
@Ryu_Niiyama Hahah was thinking the exact same thing!
@patbacknitro18
Why not both ??
Joke’s on you, both choice seems wrong, imho... like SF characters in the rooster...
Impeccable.
I recall a number of people saying it could never hit 60fps on Switch, much less at 1080p...
@frogopus yeah alongside some of the others like that new game from GungHo and Arena of Valor. That was too fast and I don't really understand the rush, nobody is making them have the direct just for 45 minutes, half of which will be spent on Smash. Make it an hour and spend some time talking about all these games
Definitely be getting this game. Not sure I will preorder it though. Love Dragon Ball
@StephenYap3 bro I’m literally digging around for stuff to trade in/sell as we speak I ain’t got money for all these goodies Nintendos killing me!!!!!! Softly but still!
Possibly the most beautiful fighting game I've ever seen
I am far from being a fighting game buff, but this looks like it is running really well. Kudos to the dev team I guess. Who did the port? Bandai themselves or did they hire someone outside?
@LastLife Summer 2018
Looks like the stages took a little downgrade, but other than that, looks real darn good. I'm glad Namco made the game look gorgeous all while making it run well on Switch
it's impressive we got a game that released 5 months ago on XBONE/PS4/PC.
This looks great! The question.... when does Goku join Smash Bros? #ultimateofultimate
I’m so excited for this! I tried Xenoverse but really wanted an arcade style fighter.
I have the Ultimate edition on Steam but definitely will double dip on Switch.
I'm glad I skipped BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle for this, definitely feels like the better game imo.
Sounds like they did an awesome port and optimization job, kudos to them!
It looks surprisingly good. Burying this without any fanfare in the Direct looks an even stranger decision.
@TossedLlama Xbox needs to hold on to that. They barely have any diverse IPs. I can't believe it is still around. They better use BattleToads wisely.
@SenseiDje what do farm animals have to do with fighting games?
Damn autocorrect... Ryu in smash seems odd to me... poor street fighter for a livin’ versus wondefully armored cartoon-like characters...
@Heavyarms55 If it's like the other versions, then it's done in-house by Arc System Work's Red Team (Blazblue Tag is Blue Team by the by). They did an amazing job on the PC port so this is no surprise, it's incredibly lightweight and runs well on most setups.
@SenseiDje Ryu himself look like a cartoon character as well, whatcha talking about and this isn't the first time Ryu had fought with colorful characters: Tatsunoko, SNK, Tekken, and even Marvel comes to mind.
@gortsi
To be fair Namco Bandai atleast had it coming to get so little screentime after the stunt they pulled with Dark Souls: Remastered. Sucks for the other games though to get so little screentime.
@NinjaSyao What stunt did they pull with Dark Souls?
I really want to convince myself to get this game, but I'm just not into fighters like this. It's a shame because it looks cool.
@GrailUK
Using the previous Nintendo Direct to announce the game, riding the hype waves a direct brings by doing so and then shortly after delaying the Switch version (which ran great in demo booths, even Blighttown, so it doesn't look like technical issues) without giving a proper reason. Just said it was because of "causality", whatever the heck that means...
Just like with Dragonball FighterZ and their whole "make noise on Twitter and buy Xenoverse 2 and we MAY give you the game you want" stunt, Nintendo and its gamers had to work as their hype machine while being treated as 2nd class citizens when it comes to the actual releases.
I can see why Nintendo didn't want to spend too much time promoting Namco's game this time, especially with their own fighter being the big star of the show.
And this has been a pattern with Namco when it comes to Nintendo platforms ever since the Gamecube, but writing all those "f*** you" moments down will turn this into an essay so I'll leave it at this.
Good to know it looks good, but I'll wait for the price reveal. And content.
I was hoping to get it on Xbox One when a Ultimate or Definitive edition with all DLC was on the market, as always happens with fighting games. I hope Switch version comes physical, not too expensive and with all DLC. Dreaming is free.
Curious to see how it runs in portable mode, even though unfortunately Switch controls aren't the best for playing fighting games on the go
@NinjaSyao totally agree on Bandai Namco as well as Capcom, they got what they deserved. But some of the others deserved better
This game was actually the highlight of the Direct to me. I'm soooo getting this as soon as it is released.
Between this and BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle I couldn't be happier concerning fighting games.
@RetroGamerAndrew
There are mods you can buy online to give the left Joy-con a D-pad and I've heard they work surprisingly well. I'm thinking about getting one just for this issue. The buttons are okay for some games, but man do they suck for diagonal inputs in fighting games!
@gortsi
Yeah, it sucks for the other developers. The indies and smaller 3rd parties have been putting in a lot of effort to support the Switch so they deserved a bigger spotlight.
I also feel kinda bad for that Crazy Justice game. Releasing on the same day as Paladins and Fortnite must suck on so many freakin' levels >.<
@NinjaSyao I agree man I like how Nintendo just fly through them like nah we don't need to talk about these cause they were talked about already. I say ports and re-releases should just be like that. Octopath Travelers really deserve that mentions cause it's the only exclusive that seems promising.
@NinjaSyao you do realize that smash Bros is developed by Namco? Just as Pokken Tournament.
Three months ago it was said it couldn't run on the Switch and now this. I think it looks awesome.
Who has played the PS4 version and can comment on the footage? Does it appear like the game looks pretty darn close to the Switch version? As a DBZ fan, would you at the moment think I won't have regrets paying for the Switch version instead?
I have this game for the ps4 and now I just want to trade it in for the switch version
