@Pichuka97 'Now if only Panic Button! would patch up Doom to resolve the bugs' Yeah, the audio bugs are pretty annoying. Although, I must say there have been times when I've been clearing out a particularly fiendish Gore Nest and having the industrial metal drop out for a little while has been quite calming. Almost meditative. Well, as meditative as tearing a demon's face off can be anyway.
@Caryslan I think you're assuming too much here. If any of EAs big hits are exclusive to one console, their sales are going to be greatly reduced simply by being tied to one console. The reason EA sells such huge numbers is because they are multiplatform. I understand your argument that having say Madden only on Xbox would be a draw for a lot of people, the actual sales numbers of the title would likely drop drastically. It's a kind of shooting yourself in the foot scenario if they bought EA and went exclusive, and on the other hand they wouldn't solve their first party software problem if they bought EA and licenced to other consoles. It's for this reason that I find the rumour very hard to believe. It doesn't make business sense. Now, that's not to say it won't happen, but it would be a terrible strategy and would probably spell the end for Microsoft in the console industry, in my opinion.
@JLPick 'just remember what Microsoft does with companies that they buy...RARE will never be the same' I agree. Microsoft has very few ideas when it comes to actual games. I think Rare's greatness during the 90s was partly because Nintendo's high standards pushed them so hard. At Microsoft it seems like they have nobody steering the ship.
So let me get this straight....Microsoft is struggling to make first party games.....so it is going to buy a company that makes multiplatform games, which are already going to be on Xbox as well as other consoles? Seems like a great business strategy.
@drich255 Same. My kids are young enough to be the target market for Labo, but even if I didn't have kids I would still probably get the variety pack for myself just to see that sweet piano working! I think they're doing something new, interesting and (most-excitingly) unexpected. The industry needs new ideas badly before it stagnates. Again.
The concept of playing as Samus hunting actual bounties always intrigued me (I mean hunting down space pirates etc, not the coconut filled chocolate bar) It always seemed like the term Bounty Hunter was never realised within the games. She seemed to be just exploring or taking on 'seek and destroy' missions. I would love to play a game like he describes above where Samus is given the names and locations of criminals and she has to hunt them down in their seedy dens across the galaxy. It would be amazing. They could take a few ideas from the structure of Assassins Creed missions (a far inferior series, in my opinion, but has some great ideas)
@Gibb Well if you've ever been splatted by MintyFresh, she's my kid and she's 9. I've witnessed her splatting all 4 members of another team in the space of ten seconds. She's an absolute monster! A cold-blooded killer. I'm so proud! 😂
There really is a lot of repetition in this article. Take the introduction for example: "So with so many games already hitting the platform, and no doubt more to come in the months to come, we thought it only right to kick things off with the big hitters hitting retail shelves in the next 12 months." That just rolls off the tongue, doesn't it? :/
@SilentHunter382 You're right off course: an unstable framerate certainly affects your experience, but what I mean to say is that a solid 30fps compared to 60fps is not a deal breaker. After a while you don't notice. People are still playing four player Mario kart 64 and the framerate on that is atrocious.
The difference in the user's experience between 1080p and 4K is negligible. The only folks who'll really notice a difference are serious First Person Shooter gamers, and they're hardly in the majority. However, the difference in processing power needed (and therefore cost to the user) is massive, and not really justifiable. I think Nintendo are right to use existing, affordable, mass-producible tech and get their games into more people's hands. Using Doom as an example, sure you notice a downgrade in visual clarity and framerate from PS4 and XBOX, but after 10 minutes you don't even notice. The thing you do notice is being able to PLAY DOOM IN BED! User experience trumps resolution/framerate any day of the week. I'm sticking with Nintendo on this.
@thesilverbrick I think it's safe to say that Retro was working on the port of DKCTropicalFreeze and that's why they weren't working on Metroid Prime 4. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy that someone else has a chance to give us their take on Samus, and I also think Retro's DK games are the best in the series but it's kind of underwhelming to think that a studio of their talent is spending their time on a port. Again, I'm just assuming. Maybe there's an announcement that Retro are working on the new Wave Race or something. We can dream.....
@HappyMaskedGuy "Funny coincidence then, because your English is not enough too English enough for me to comprehend. Boom." Ironically your English is terrible in this comment, and an Irish person is now calling you out on it. Ka-boom.
Guys, guys. Hold on. You do realise @Nincompoop is trolling the lot of you. It's actually hilarious watching other people take the bait, because he got me with almost the exact same comment on a story about a class buying a switch for their teacher a few weeks ago. Feed the trolls if you like, but don't take everything so seriously.
@thesilverbrick Was just about to say the same thing. What they should be doing with games that are struggling to get optimised for Switch is to delay them. If you can release a patch that fixes a broken game (like NBA 2K18) a month after release, then why not delay the release until you have the game patched and then make that a mandatory patch on day one? I understand that they need to get their stock ready for release, but surely a slight delay until the game is playable would be preferable to all the bad will that releasing a turd generates? We live in an age where you can fix a broken game after release, and that's great, but there are much better ways to go about it.
Jeez, I have a lot of sympathy for the reviewers that have to play through all of these neo geo games that were decidedly average even in their heyday. Must be like pulling teeth, especially when there's so much quality on the Switch that anyone would rather be playing instead.
The fact that a title as big and as popular as this would launch with that many bugs is a perfect example of everything that is wrong with the modern games industry
As interesting as this app seems on paper (or in this case my screen) I can't imagine playing a PC game which is designed for a large display being any good on a small handheld screen. Maybe I'm being pessimistic, but even some games which have been correctly ported to the Switch (eg; Rocket League) still suffer from very tiny text in the menu screens. I can only imagine this problem would be exacerbated by Rainway.
@NEStalgia If it weren't for @sligeach_eire we wouldn't be here commenting on this story, as he/she provided the tip. Kind of ironic that you would call them negative when you're being negative right now, and the guy/girl is probably just sick of everyone jumping down their throat when they're in the comments. If I were sligeach_eire, I'd stay away from this toxic comments section too. Nintendo Life used to have a great and very positive comments section, but you're all bringing it down. This is a positive story which 'Sliggy' shared with all of us. You're welcome. Merry F'n Christmas.
@Nincompoop I think food and shelter is probably higher up their list than video games, but you know, there are charities that help people in third world countries too. There's a charity called Goal who do great work by giving goats and chickens to poor and starving people so they can become self sufficient. You can donate here: https://www.goalglobal.org/donate Just to clarify, I'm in no way affiliated to Goal, I just like their 'teach and man to fish' attitude to charity, instead of just throwing money at a problem and hoping it gets to the right people.

@kokjopan I hear ya, buddy. Unfortunately for me, my 9 year old daughter is an absolute BEAST at Splatoon 2 so I struggle to get a game in! Santa might have to bring another one this Christmas. :-0
As excited as I am that Doom is on Switch, I can't justify the cost. I'll have to wait until it drops in price, or put it on the Christmas wish list. Rocket League for 20 bucks is much better value for money, I think.
As a Nintendo-only gamer, Rocket League unfortunately passed me by. It's now taking over my life. Less than a week in and I'm already scoring hat tricks. Such a great game. Cross play makes the veterans from other systems seem like gods at times.
@CircuitWrangler3 In my experience, they do this with each hardware launch eg; promise healthy support and actively encourage ports and exclusives from 3rd parties. It's not a new phenomenon. The difference this time, I feel, is that these 3rd parties have more confidence in the Switch than the WiiU and Wii before it. Maybe it's because of work done behind the scenes by Nintendo to nurture relationships, or maybe 3rd parties see potential in the (as yet) untapped hybrid console market which the hardware can exist in. Either way, I'm a happy gamer. I don't feel I'm missing out as much by being exclusively a Nintendo gamer.
@dizzy_boy I think it's more a cultural thing that makes Nintendo less revered than Sony in this part of the world. A lot of UK (and like me, Irish) gamers don't really buzz off Nintendo's very Japanese quirkiness, whereas Sony are much more capable of catering to western tastes. When you think of the big hits in this neck of the woods (GTA, Fifa, Gran Turismo) Nintendo just doesn't pander to those types of gamer.
@gaga64 That's the opposite to me: I play Odyssey 90% docked and Splatoon2 on handheld mostly. I find it so impressive that an online shooter of the calibre runs on a handheld, and Odyssey definitely controls better with two detached joycons.
@Yorumi @carlos82 I was just about to say the same thing. Until the refresh rate of most screens is above 60hz, 60fps will be the max the developers will aim for.
@tourjeff Wave Race on Switch is the stuff of dreams. The graphics on the Gamecube version still look gorgeous today. You have no idea how excited I would be if Wave Race for Switch was announced.
As much as I'm thrilled to see games like these coming to Switch, I'd have to agree with @sillygostly and @NerdNoiseRadio about the docked mode showing no performance jump from portable. There's no excuse for this. If it's running at these settings on portable, we know it can run better in docked mode. Still super excited for these games and will likely buy them all.
