Nintendo's running a series of videos on YouTube which looks at the ways you'll be able to create cool toys using Labo, which arrives next month.
This week, it's the turn of the RC Tank. This demonstration shows how you can start with a very basic concept - such as the Joy-Con's IR camera "seeing" some reflective tape - and add layers of complexity, such as sound effects and even a "Hit" sign.
More of the Toy-Con Garage's programming system is shown here, which hints at just how deep and involving Labo is going to be when it launches.

Looks like fun, as always. I always wait for the UK video for Labo because I cannot stand the American voiceover.
"Make your own adult toys" Labo Adult Edition.
@SethNintendo @Scrummer I guess the solution is to hire an Australian VO guy
Battle City: Cardboard Edition soon?
@SmaggTheSmug Errybody loaves 'strayan accents.
@SethNintendo I can't tell if you prefer the American person or just dislike both of them.
@Bart_T
Ah would ye go 'way outta dat. Sure everyone knows de Irish accent is the best, boyo!
@The_Mysteron Now we wait for the Scots to chime in...
@Bart_T Even if they do, no one will understand them.
I wonder if you can play tones continuously, and build a theramine.
@SmaggTheSmug @Bart_T
Och, aye the noo
@Pod "I wonder if you can play tones continuously, and build a theramine."
I sold my theramine recently. I literally hadn't touched it in months. 😂
Wait, Rubber Guitar ??
I thought Toy Con 01 was just only 5 different toys .
Now it sounds like 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 Toy Cons confirmed.
@Anti-Matter
No, the entire point of the Toy-Con Garage mode is to come up with your own projects. The Sampler pack has five different Nintendo-designed toys. The garage mode allows you to program anything to your heart's content, so it's basically whatever you want that you can come up with.
@The_Mysteron
That's the BA-DUM TSH!'est of BA-DUM TSH!es I've heard in a while!
@Cameron_Talley: Great icon/avatar!
@Everyone_Else: This is going to be eventually hacked for all kinds of purposes, I have a feeling. The creepy thing is, that I could also see some sick individuals using this for nefarious purposes of all kinds. Aside from that, this looks like a really cool toy for kids to learn. In a way, I wanna say this is Nintendo's toy-origins coming out, but I also believe it's mostly from the current market trends of "programmable" toys for children, that I see in my Target, & Best Buy, etc.
Edit: Worth also pointing out, that the Game Boy Color's IR feature can now be emulated, since the Switch has ir. Actually, the Wiimotes did, too.
Does anyone know if Toy-Con Garage is Pro Controller compatible or not?
@SethNintendo What's wrong with rural, southern Americans? 😉
Sooo cool--but I'd have to make it so the tank actually shoots some kind of physical paper projectile!
People are going to find ways to accomplish some brilliant things with Labo.
I can see it now.
That music box style thing looks like it had the nodes resized on top of the camera image for sensing IR... that opens up many possibilities. Gotta start thinking of some fun projects...
@Capt_N "This is going to be eventually hacked for all kinds of purposes, I have a feeling. The creepy thing is, that I could also see some sick individuals using this for nefarious purposes of all kinds."
What do you mean? Is your 'creepy mind' thinking of vibrating joy-con that go where the sun don't shine? Indeed, I wouldn't know what's more nefarious then that
Interesting approach to the basics of programming.
@Megal0maniac: No, by "creepy", and "sick", I mean the very real potential of people using it for things they shouldn't. Like spying on/monitor others unaware, or stuff like that. If, as the video shows, it is easy to use the joy-cons tandem rumbling to move very light objects, it is then feasible someone could also move things that are tinier, but also deadly objects. It's unlikely (that) someone who wants to kill, or hurt people, would go to the trouble of learning how to operate this for purposes beyond what Nintendo intends. But, no one would suspect a "toy" being used for something morally wrong. I also know it sounds sorta cliche. I'm just saying there's going to be a lot of people use labo in ways outside the box, both good, & bad. I don't believe in wasting my time, doing the kind of stuff you mentioned, even though you were joking.
So lazy video by nintendo but at least it funny. Hey we put a pen on the car to make it look like a tank lol. I'm sure the public can come up with better than that but maybe that was intentional. Very funny video though lol.
Looks interesting, I might get it for the lolz
Attaching a marker to the RC car doesn't really make it a "tank" IMO, but this is Nintendo, so...
@Capt_N That sounds like way too much hassle and not enough effect to hurt or kill someone. It would require building some sort of Rube Goldberg machine to even work.
@Capt_N What. I'm sorry, but that does sound very far fetched. The IR-camera has a short reach and the view is pretty bad as you can see in the vid. There are standalone camera's with a multitude of capabilities and sharpness of image which are half the Joy-con price and the size of a needle. But you're thinking of Joy-con just laying around and people taking advantage of that. I think laptops and smartphones are a far greater threat in that case.
