Wave Race 64 will make a splash on the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack service tomorrow, and as much as we love this N64 classic, a brand new entry would be nice.
It seems it's not just fans of the series who would love to see Wave Race make a more serious comeback - with Fast RMX, Art of Balance and The Touryst developer Shin'en Multimedia also calling for a "new" Wave Race game on Switch. The German company's Twitter account went as far as suggesting a "modern remix" - calling the N64 outing one of the best games ever:
@ShinenGames Replying to @NintendoUK - "Wave Race 64! One of the best games ever. We would love to play a new Wave Race on Switch. Perhaps some kind of modern ReMiX."
Unsurprisingly, this response was enough to get a lot of Nintendo and Wave Race fans speculating. Some even thought the idea of a "remix" of the GameCube and Nintendo 64 game could be a good idea.

Wave Race has always been known as a bit of a visual showcase for Nintendo's hardware, and Shin'en (as highlighted by many of its fans) has a history of delivering impressive graphics on Nintendo systems with games like Fast RMX and The Touryst. So it could be a match made in heaven (assuming this isn't already some sort of tease...it probably isn't).
Of course, one other Nintendo series we're sure would be the perfect match with this developer is F-Zero. The N64 entry was most recently added to the Switch Online, but we haven't seen a new entry in a very long time. How about you give this team a shot at that, Nintendo?
Will you be checking out Wave Race 64 when it arrives on the Switch Online + Expansion Pack service tomorrow? Would you like to see a developer like Shin'en Multimedia given a chance with a series like Wave Race or F-Zero? Leave a comment below.

I mean... I'm not sure they are the best developer for an F-Zero game (FAST RMX doesn't compare to F-Zero GX in any way, quality shows)...... but they are talented.
If there's a chance to revive lost Nintendo IPs like Waverace I say... do it!
Honestly, I think Wave Race would suit Shin’en better than F-Zero would.
Now if they’d only find someone to make a new 1080 Snowboarding.
@locky-mavo You might be interested in reading this (I'd definitely nominate this guy for 1080):

That would be splendid idea! Imagine the water graphics (although there are other games that as realistic graphics, but still)!
But there was another Jet Ski game on Switch already.

Aqua Moto Racing Utopia
Give them Wave Race, Excite Truck, F Zero and 1080, any of that lot would be great instead of Nintendo sitting on them and doing nothing.
Wave Race is pretty high up my list of most wanted Nintendo series revivals. Blue Storm was one of my first console games, and I played it a ton. I can still hear the announcer's voice in my head.
@Freek You know I actually agree with that. Nintendo should let more dev handle their properties if they themselves aren't willing to do so. After all it works out very well since Cruis'n Blast did it and we already had WayForward handling Advance Wars too. As long as those stay exclusives to Nintendo and maybe PC that's good enough.
I've got both and I think the Fast games smoke GX. Although I'm not sure it's fair to compare a GC game to their Wii U and Switch counterparts.
This could be really good if they get to develop this. Maybe they are faithful to the original or maybe they come up with a new mechanic.
(I love Fast RMX. The boosts remind me of the effect in Star Wars when they go to light speed and I've not seen it in any other game.)
@Serpenterror
Yeah, I mean if Nintendo have no interest in making new entries in some of their franchises surely it would be better to hand it to proven indie developers like Shin'en who know how to make great racing titles.
Expanding the audience at the same time by creating new entries in those dormant franchises, especially on a console that has sold as many as the Switch has.
I’d still say Sega, once again, is the best choice for a 3rd party dev of a new F-Zero with Nintendo assistance and oversight. F-Zero GX was and still is amazing.
Also a new Wave Race would be wavy, but I’d prefer a new Diddy Kong Racing as that has hovercraft levels on water as well in addition to other vehicular courses.
Also also wish Midway Games were still around to make a new Hydro Thunder whilst we’re on the water racing genre subject.
… Wun can only hope.
@Freek Yeah. I’d like that but I think RawThrills would be an equally good option
Give me Wave Race 4 you cowards!
Please make it more like Waverace 64 instead of Blue Storm. The tone is much cleaner. Blue Storm feels a little bit like it is made by Sega.
I would love a new Wave Race! It would be a day one purchase for me.
Fast RMX and Wave Race 64 both enjoyed a lot of their success as a result of how early in the respective console's games library they released.
I remember Wave Race 64 coming out. The first major releases on the 64 in the UK were Mario 64, Pilotwings 64, Shadows of the Empire and FIFA 64 all at launch, with Turok later that same week. You then had Mortal Kombat, Wave Race, ISS and Mario Kart a few weeks apart taking you up to the Summer.
At the time, this was a slow roll out. I vividly remember Turok, Wave Race and ISS all having particularly big launches as they hype was off the Chart. All three are undoubtedly good games, but don't underestimate the impact that hype had on the perception.
Fast RMX is the same with Switch. No doubt helped by the F Zero vibes (even though this is clearly a Wipeout clone).
Personally, I don't see Nintendo working with them. They released a good game, but that game benefitted enormously from Switch not having many games. Have they done much since? We're talking 7 years?
Wave Race certainly deserves a new game. Its another Nintendo franchise that suffered on the GameCube not because of the game, but the console. We'd have had another Wave Race if it never came on Gamecube and was on Wii.
A new wave race beats replaying old games even if they are great ones. Make it happen Nintendo
I would love to see Nintendo try something along the line of Riot's recent 'Riot Forge' endeavour, where they got a bunch of independent studios to make the type of games they're known for doing really well, but with League of Legends characters. Honestly it's so smart, I have zero interest in the main LoL game, but through these and the Arcane tv series I am actually interested in the characters and lore now.
I'd love to see Nintendo do that with their lower tier IP. I think people are right to a degree that titles like WaveRace and Pilotwings do benefit from being on the console at launch (I don't know about Fast RMX, would have to compare to how well things like RedOut did). But I think branding is a big thing here, if Nintendo made a big deal of doing this kind of scheme, gave it branding like 'Riot Forge' and released them all as £20 ish titles on the eShop, I think they could do well.
That would be exciting to hear all about the next "Nintendo Garage" title, right?
Well F-Zero has little chance, the N64 game sold around 1 million, the Cube around 1.5 million, as for Wave race the N64 title did pretty decent numbers at 3 million, but the Cube game did not even manage a million.
Shame really as these franchises could really have potential on the Switch, no chance of an internal EAD development team taking them up, but perhaps Shin'en could take them up, all depends on the cost to Nintendo I guess.
I suppose this is a possibility as Nintendo farmed F-Zero out to Sega last time.
MAKE THIS HAPPEN!!
I’d love a WaveRace, 1080, Excitebike/truck, Pilotwings cross over. Switch Xtreme sports or something. All based on a massive wuhoo island. With RPG story elements. You start with a basic JetSki, snowboard etc. drive a jeep across the island to get to race starts and open up new areas/events of the map (can warp once found). See hang gliders overhead as you race down the mountain etc etc. oh boy I need to stop.
If anyone wants to scratch that waverace itch I strongly recommend riptide gp renegade! It's the best alternative I've found on the console so far.
I think "Vector Unit" would suit better.
In fact Vector Unit made Hydro Thunder Hurricane for Xbox 360, and also made the two Riptide games.
I adore Wave Race 64. I never played Blue Storm and forget regularly that it even happened. I would love to see the series revived, but I'd prefer a new game over some sort of reskin.
It baffles me why Nintendo don't partner with more studios to work on lapsed franchises like this. Let Sega make another F-Zero. Let these guys make Wave Race. Let Playtonic make Chibi Robo.
Just stop sitting on them and letting them die!!!
i would love to see a New Wave Race and Hydro Thunder. who owns Hydro Thunder, anyways? is it Microsoft? since they published the Xbox 360 Arcade Game, i assumed they did, but i could be wrong though.
@Freek I agree, even if just to do some remasters of the titles would be something..
At this point I'd be happy with a remake of either entry.
But, still have hopes Nintendo will revive it like it did with Cruis'n.
They made a futuristic racing game, they didn't need the F-Zero IP. Why not make a jet ski game?
Yes Please!!!! If I were Nintendo, I would look at this as a slam dunk.
@TheFox They both had their ups and downs but F-Zero GX had better identity and charm about it. Fast RMX is basically just you picking a vehicle and racing on tracks. Though if you say which one is the most fun I had to say F-Zero GX is more fun than Fast RMX but in terms of accessibility Fast RMX is more beginner's friendly. F-Zero GX's difficulty may turn beginners down if not familiar with its core gameplay and most are likely get turn down by getting punish whenever their vehicle is down instead of giving it a chance like in Fast RMX. Also the tracks are more flat and simple in Fast RMX whereas F-Zero GX had more gravitational and rotating tracks that sometimes throw you to the wrong edge of the road when you don't mean to. It's two different games with one being more chaotic and challenging while the other a more strategic simple racer. You could say F-Zero GX is being more risk and reward while Fast RMX is just playing it safe.
Shin'en needs to make a new F-Zero before anything else, please and thank you.
Then Shin'en needs to be tasked with aiding Game Freak with engine optimization, for the love of god
In fact, I keep thinking Shin'en would be a perfect studio for Nintendo to purchase.
@YoshiF2 I am confused how you say that the GameCube game has is better quality than fast rmx racing? The scope is much different, the GameCube game was a bigger game, but I don't see how you can say that fast rmx racing is not on par with it quality-wise, I feel like fast rmx racing is higher quality in my opinion it's amazing what they have done with the controls and graphics and sound and everything about fast rmx racing, it's one of the best games on the switch in my opinion. And they do it without taking up gobs and gobs of storage space.
@__jamiie I'm honestly very afraid of Sega making anything high quality again, it's like they screw up almost everything they touch recently. They take concepts that should have been a 10, and instead deliver about a five or six.
@nocdaes game cube wave race also suffers because of some weird controls and also not adding new and better courses.
I can't even tell you exactly what is wrong with the controls, except that it just does not feel as good as the 64 version.
Shin'en x F-Zero... That is all.
Shin'en makes quality games, but they're a very small studio and said games aren't exactly brimming with personality. Not sure why people think they should get handed the reins to F-Zero or even acquired
