I don't think it's an "act of desperation" to fill a gap as much as it is a carefully premeditated decision to fill a gap. Mario Kart and Splatoon are obviously both just about ready for launch (seeing as how they were perfectly playable two months ago), but Nintendo's being smart and not dropping all their bombs at once like they did with the Wii U.
I just spent two and a half hours going from the Shrine of Resurrection to the first objective in Breath of the Wild... first impressions? I'm really surprised how small the screen seems given its actual size. Also, the system DOES get quite warm. But the game and the Switch's actual functionality are fantastic. No desync issues or anything.
@6ch6ris6 I think it looks pretty great myself. Can't think of a single other system that had more than 7 full retail releases I felt I absolutely had to have in the first 12 months
IGN gave it a 6.7/10. I'm not really surprised. They had to give it a score, and many of its most important features aren't live yet. Couple in the desync issue with the JoyCon (which has to be taken into account) and you get a less-than-perfect impression. That said, neither the desync issue nor the battery will affect me in the least, so I'm still every bit as hyped. Roll on Friday!
@PanurgeJr SLIGEACH_EIRE means big triple-A third party games that will also be available on other platforms, like Mass Effect Andromeda and Resident Evil 7. In his opinion, if the Switch doesn't play the games that his other consoles already play better, it's just not worth getting.
Looks really interesting. Anyone remember that old PC game Nightmare Ned? I think it's just the subject matter, but this reminds me of that game and makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.
@Zach777 That's an interesting perspective. As for me (and probably quite a lot of other people), I'm in love with the system--I think it's different, quirky, powerful and practical, and unlike anything else I own.
Capcom and Nintendo have a great thing going right now. Monster Hunter is one of Capcom's most lucrative franchises, and it's been a Nintendo exclusive for a while now. Hell, the 3DS got an original Resident Evil game (and it was actually received better critically than the main entries at the time). I'm hoping for an Okami HD port at some point
@JpGamerGuy90 Yeah, but seriously, when's the last time a console had a really steady stream of high quality titles right out of the gate? You'd have to go back quite a ways.
@lighteningbolt79 This may come as a surprise to you, but the vast, VAST majority of the human population does not own a video game console. Even the highest selling console of all time, the PS2, was purchased by less than 2% of the population. The "average person" doesn't play video games AT ALL. If you've ever owned your own game system, you are part of an extremely exclusive niche.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I think it's sad that the Wii U version didn't get a special edition. I know one of my friends is getting the Wii U version and really wanted the map.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Well, going just by Amazon preorders, the Switch version is looking to sell like ten times more. It's better for Nintendo, remember, if the version on their fancy new box sells more
@rjejr I don't think you have to worry about Zelda on Wii U outselling the Switch version. On Amazon at least (where the sales rankings are public), pre-orders for the Switch version are crushing those for the Wii U version. We're in a very similar situation we were at when Twilight Princess dual-released on the Wii and Gamecube, and like you yourself noticed, it sold almost seven times as many copies on the newer system despite only being a marginal upgrade.
If Zelda does sell 8 million, it doesn't have to do it in its first year. Twilight Princess didn't sell 8 million copies in its first year, despite being released on two platforms; it took almost TEN YEARS to reach that number. These titles sell slowly but continuously (like many Nintendo games).
The average consumer isn't going to pick up the system until the holiday anyway, so yeah they'll probably wait until then. Most average people have lives outside of video games xD
@rjejr It's a Super Bowl ad, so this is like, five and a half million steps forward from what they were doing with the Wii U. Also, it's much better to focus your advertising. One good game will sell systems; those of us on the internet whining about the lack of a "good launch lineup" constitute maybe... .001% of their customer base.
I will never see the Switch as a home console first. They really need to stop with that marketing because I don't think it resonates with anyone. It might even alienate the Japanese audience, since they're probably (like me) all buying it for the "mega-powerful handheld" side of things.
It's a handheld that can be attached to the TV. It is not, in any way shape or form, a home console. Was the Vita* a home console because you could hook it up to your TV?
EDIT: PSP I mean. I thought the Vita did have TV out but I was mistaken.
@LegendOfPokemon To each their own! As a student who is out of the house for 95% of my daylight hours, the portability is ABSOLUTELY worth the cost to me.
It's easy to make a game big, data wise. It's a son of a woof-woof to make a game as big as this that small. Hats off to Nintendo, because this will mean faster load times and better performance for all.
@UK-Nintendo Uh... MOST studio's games are the same characters / universe but with new worlds / gameplay / refinements. GTA, CoD, God of War, Ratchet and Clank, Halo, Fable, et cetera.
When the rumors came around that the Switch would be 1080p on the TV but 720p on the go, why did everyone automatically assume it was because the Switch would be less powerful away from the dock?
Maybe it's just because the Switch has a 720p screen, in which case I would probably expect BETTER graphics while it isn't trying to force itself to make a 1080p picture
@vincentgoodwin Festival Coins are used to purchase unique items and stat boosts for your pokemon in the festival plaza. It's a fun diversion for a little bit, but nowhere near as fun as Super Training was in XY.
@Starwolf_UK Eh. The game starts you with 30-freaking-thousand dollars and it keeps rolling in from there. As long as you don't buy expensive clothes you'll probably make more than you spend :3
I sure hope it's not a launch title, not if it's going to be the same game we played at E3 with its sparse world and jittery framerate. The game looked like it still needed lots of work, and maybe more than 9 months of it.
