Re: NPD Reveals The Top 10 Best-Selling Switch Games In The United States

Tao

@JR150 Or, yano, Wii U didn't sell that well so there's more people that haven't played/bought them before than people who don't want to buy them again.

I've personally double dipped on a few of them, but then again, I threw the old Wii U versions on ebay for what was near full price, they sold for that amount and I bought what is essentially now the "definitive version" of them on the Switch.

Get Xenoblade Chronicles X ported and I can pretty much sell the Wii U since everything has been ported.

Re: Datamine Uncovers Possible Post-Launch Characters Coming To Crash Team Racing

Tao

@EasyDaRon And as I said, that's fine for you. As said, many get bored with nothing there to work towards or nothing new to see.

I also played a lot of Mario Kart online but once I had unlocked everything I didn't see the point, aside from the fact I was starting to tire of it even before I had unlocked everything. I had seen the content countless times and nothing new was going to happen other than a change in ranking I didn't personally care about. Whilst you might be fine donig the same thing over and over, I was ready to pick up something new and fresh with content I hadn't seen yet. Even a new character being added to Mario Kart would have extended the gameplay by at least one more cup since I would have been curious to see all their new animations.

Besides, unless the only game you play is Mario Kart you don't exactly defeat my point. If what you say is true, you should be happy with that being the one and only game you play given it's a fun game, so why wouldn't you want to just play that?

Re: Datamine Uncovers Possible Post-Launch Characters Coming To Crash Team Racing

Tao

@EasyDaRon It's support, regardless of whether the content is just superficial or not. It helps flesh out the roster, lower the chance of multiple of the same character in a race and generally just let people have a bit more choice. What's wrong with that?

I also don't see your point on needing motivation to play a game. If I've done everything in a game I've done everything, I can't just sit there playing through the same old content over and over with nothing to actually work towards or achieve. Going around the same tracks over and over and over with nothing to actually gain aside from occasionally getting a slightly faster lap time sounds incredibly boring to me...And to everybody really, hence why we play multiple different games and stop playing old ones, because we've done the game and even if we enjoy it there's nothing left to really do.

Same reason I can't enjoy something like Minecraft or multiplayer games with no sort of progression: after the initial x amount of hours just playing with the mechanics, what am I actually working towards? What's the point? Why am I just doing the same thing over and over again? Is it to improve at the game for the sake of improving at the game? In that case, there's far better and more productive things I could be doing with my time than being a wannabe MLG.

I mean, you may be able to pointlessly do the same thing over and over without purpose, but some of us like a goal even if we like the game. That doesn't make you or us wrong.

Re: A 14-Year-Old Has Created Super Mario Maker 2 Inside PS4 Title LittleBigPlanet 3

Tao

@Anti-Matter Of course the actual Mario Maker is better than a fan made version running on another level creation tool.

It's impressive regardless...Plus, it shows how much more potential LBP had when it can do something such as this with its far more in depth systems. Can't exactly see Mario Maker emualting other games so well, which is fine because it's supposed to be simple.

Re: Feature: It's Time To Lay Down Your ARMS

Tao

@ALinkttPresent I would say the opposite is true for me.

I did start out wanting physical copies only, coming from PC not having an issue with digital copies, I just feel I want physical copies of console exclusive and/or favourite games (need some 'rule' or I wouldnt have any shelf space with the amount I buy!)

I bought a couple digital games only because they were either digital only and/or I already had the physical copy elsewhere. I soon found I was playing those more than physical.

I then started buying digital copies of games I had physically and I've been playing games I would otherwise have said I'm done with. For the past few months I've bought nothing but digital (though to be fair, it's all stuff I dont consider worthy of shelf space anyway. Nothing worthy of a physical to me has been released in a while).

To me, it's a lot more convenient to have a digital copy of something like Mario Kart 8 and having it means I'll turn it on for 10 minutes because it's there ready for me to play at any time. Meanwhile, something like Splatoon 2 I would love to play for a few rounds but messing around with the cartridges (assuming I've even brought it with me) for the sake of 10 minutes is enough to make me feel "I'll just play something else/whatever is already on the cart slot". Its a small convenience, but it's still a convenience, especially if I just want a "quick go" i probably dont have much time and dont want to spend any of that time looking for the cart.

That said I'm likely still going to double dip on my favorites, play it by ear to which version I get first. Animal Crossing will likely be digital first since I'll play it a little bit each day for a long time after release. Fire Emblem will be a physical since I probably wont take it out of the cart slot until I've finished it anyway.

Re: Nintendo Shares Colourful Graphic Outlining Upcoming Switch Releases

Tao

Would be nice if they separated or made 'old games' logo's a little smaller. They're not a stand out for many, I feel it would be a bit more beneficial for the brand new "play 'em here first" titles to be more on display than a game most people played like 5+ years ago.

Not that I don't buy rereleases, I've probably got more time spent on old rereleased games than actual Switch exclusives (possibly because there's not that many currently out I had an interest in), but I never thought "OH MY GOD! DRAGONS DOGMA...YET AGAIN! SWITCH IS AWESOME!" or "BLOW MY LOVE LENGTH, I FINALLY HAVE THE CHANCE TO PLAY RESIDENT EVIL 4!".

Fire Emblem Three Houses and Luigi's Mansion 3 are the types of games I feel should be prominently displayed, not Alien Isolation and Contra...Though to be fair, I may have initially missed Fire Emblem's logo seeing as "bland black text with small subtitle below" is the hip cool trend.

Re: Video: Here's How The Witcher 3 On Switch Compares To The PS4 Version

Tao

Not really a fan of the Witcher, got super bored with it and doubt I'll be giving the Switch version a chance, just wanted to see how it's shaping up.

The comparison with PS4 is night and day. If I were to play it, I would avoid playing it docked since that's only going to showcase how downgraded everything is when I could be playing a far superior version on PS4 or PC. The things that instantly stand out are the view distance, model and texture detail and lighting really stand out, the colours seemingly being less bright on the Switch too IMO. Ultimately the game looks a lot older than it is.

For handheld though, I can't imagine it being very noticeable. Things like the huge lack of foliage will be noticeable IF you've played it elsewhere and know what it's SUPPOSED to be like, but as with most ports, being on a small handheld screen is going to mask a heck of a lot of the downgrades. As per, it's impressive that we have a game like this on a handheld system.

Ultimately, happy for those looking forward to the game but if you're planning on playing it docked for any significant amount of time and do own another platform, maybe consider that (though I'm sure anybody with another system who is interested has already played this).

Re: Pokémon's Junichi Masuda Explains The Decision To Limit Sword And Shield's Pokédex

Tao

I don't mind.

Regions are supposed to have different Pokemon. Just like I wouldn't see a lizard or a camel just strutting around here in my country BUT I'm likely to see something like a cat or a pigeon if I go abroad, Pokemon regions really should consist of a bunch of unique Pokemon alongside a few older ones that fit with the region.

If all the current Pokemon were available in each new region, none of the regions would really feel as unique, just a new backdrop for gen wunners to catch the exact same Pokemon yet again. Not to mention any game before it would basically be the game with less Pokemon, essentially making each game redundant with each new release.

I hope they keep adding them for the purpose of post game, maybe in some sort of special end game 'catch old Pokemon' area like they did in past games, but in regards to the main single player campaign I really don't care.

Also, I'll be surprised if Miltank and Mareep aren't guaranteed for this game. I'm not a fan of them, but cows and sheep are all over the UK.

Re: Spyro Is Headed To Crash Team Racing As Post-Launch Grand Prix Content

Tao

@RyanSilberman At least it's free content to a game they've otherwise already fully remade (so we can't really argue it's not complete on launch since it's got the same + more content than the original 'complete' game).

Not exactly like Fallout 76 which was released in a state that could never be called even close to finished.

Re: Gallery: Fan Embarks On Year-Long Project To Draw Every Smash Bros. Ultimate Character

Tao

@Starcakes Yes, but, as said, artists often get money from commissions when somebody directly asks them to draw 'the thing'. You can't play a drawing but in these (not uncommon) circumstances they're literally making money from somebody elses IP.

Fan games are most often passion projects done for free. Sometimes you can donate (usually quite far into development) but it's rare you'll ever see a fan game actually charging money for it.

Re: Random: We Really Hope The New Nintendo Switch Looks Like This

Tao

@RupeeClock That's some...Odd, reasoning.

I don't think whether the buttons are above or below the right analogue really makes much of a difference. Actually, any difference whatsoever. I highly doubt developers are thinking "dang, we can't do that 'thing' because the analogue stick is below the buttons", especially since for over a decade the vast majority of games (tons of them having Switch ports) have been developed for at least 2 platforms that had two different control layouts, the only difference being which controller the user found comfortable.

Personally, I much prefer symmetrical sticks than the asymmetrical ones the Switch has, so this would be ideal for me. It's baffling that they don't already offer an option to do this with the existing sticks given the joycons are detachable since the layout makes absolutely no difference to gameplay and is only forced to mimic the logo.

Re: All Those amiibo On Your Shelf? You Can't Use Them In Super Mario Maker 2

Tao

@WaxxyOne Most of the animation frames are already done though via Mario Maker 1. They'll at best have to add what? Like, 20 new ones to account for totally new character amiibo that have been released and not included in the first one.

Then I'm just going to ignore everything else you said since they wouldn't make 3D models for them. They wouldn't even make SMB3 or SMW sprites for them. You know why? Because these costumes only ever existed for the original Super Mario Bros style which makes everything else you said redundant.

Also, it's not entitlement, it's "we've spent all this money on your greedy overpriced cut content DLC keys and we can't use them despite the promise of them being used in games for years and years because bafflingly a feature that already existed in the first game isn't included". Expecting to get something when you pay for something isn't entitlement...Especially when the seller whispers sweet words about how you totally will get things.

Re: Talking Point: Why Is It So Hard To Buy A Switch Dock Set?

Tao

I don't see what's so difficult about them stocking more of these. There's not much to them what so ever. It's not as though they're filled with loads of specialist expensive parts.

I would like to have at least two more docks, one for another room and one to keep in the car in case I go to a friends, but I'm not paying the ridiculous prices they're going for due to Nintendo's typical ineptitude of making their products easily available to customers.

But, as per usual, it doesn't matter. There's enough idiot Nintendo fans that will accept this.

Re: These Fire Emblem Plushies Are Simply Adorable, You Guys

Tao

@Timsworld2 I dunno, you whining about a thing you don't have to buy and throwing blame at completely the wrong people simply for daring to spread word to those who may want it is way more pathetic, not to mention childish as well as a blatant display of logical thinking skills.

Re: Guide: Where To Buy The Simply Adorable Fire Emblem Plushies

Tao

@Timsworld2 Yes, how dare they show us a cool thing just because it's only available on PlayAsia! How dare they do that when PlayAsia only accepts the most popular and commonly used form of online payment option, something NintendoLife has no power over!

You know what, I was gonna buy one of these but no, I refuse since I can only use PayPal, that thing I use regardless! I refuse to have nice things! I demand NintendoLife only let me know when things can be paid for via carrier pigeon!

Re: Sega Will Reduce Number Of New Digital Releases After Facing $17 Million Loss

Tao

I imagine SEGA being one of those companies that has a lot more of "physical only" fans which I can see being a contributor to this. Add to that, SEGA's games are mostly ignored by everybody outside of the latest (usually awful) Sonic release, Yakuza and Football Manager (which is actually one of if not the most profitable franchises they have, surprisingly).

Nice to see they'll be focusing on existing franchises though. I do still follow SEGA seemingly more than most people (who are often surprised to hear they release more than just Sonic games). They have a habit of letting their existing IP's gather dust though when there's a lot that could be done with them.

Re: Random: Warren Spector's Nintendo Switch Has A Battery Problem

Tao

@Itzdmo I wouldn't say it's a terrible handheld. The games it can play as a handheld are impressive enough, a significant leap above what the 3DS or Vita was doing...But that battery life is absolutely abysmal and it absolutely baffles me how so few people ever seem to mention it since for a handheld, that's a big issue. I still take my 3DS out with me as a priority since the battery life isn't utter garbage.

But yea, as a home console the Switch isn't great. If there's a third party game on the Switch I'm most likely going to buy it on literally any other platform since playing it "on the go" isn't a huge selling point when the battery lasts so little time. If I'm probably going to be playing it at home anyway, why would I want to play the objectively worst version of it.

Re: Nintendo's Digital Sales Are Nearly Double The Amount Of The Previous Fiscal Year

Tao

@Count_Duckula It's kind of sad when people mistake their preferences for factually the best possible way of doing something, but not surprising.

I'll stick to a mixture of the two since Nintendo's games rarely drop in price physically anyway and third party games are old, digitally cheap and I already have physical copies hanging around for other systems. Seeing as I don't buy crap games, I've nothing to sell anyway.

Re: Katana Zero Sold More Than 100,000 Copies In Its First Week

Tao

Gameplay was fun enough. Nothing massively unique, but a solid and enjoyable.

The story though...I just didn't care about the story. Seems to be a thing in indie games where story parts are slow paced keeping me from playing the actual game, which is the real issue there since I would be fine if it just gave me a button to skip that.

Re: Humble Store Expands Digital Switch Selection With More Third-Party Offerings

Tao

@TheFanatic Silly to you, but you've already told us that it doesn't apply to you anyway preferring physical games, probably not a regular PC gamer by that logic.

For somebody like me who plays a lot on PC, I subscribe to Humble Monthly anyway since they more often than not have at least one game in that bundle that I wanted anyway and I would pay the £10 for alone, every other game that comes with it being a bonus. Then the fact I get a 10% discount on everything on top of that, especially useful since I'm more likely to shop on Humble Bundle than Steam, this being a contributing factor.

But yea, of course you have to sign up to the subscription to benefit from it...It wouldn't be a 10% discount if everybody had access to it, that would just be the RRP.

Re: Random: This Monster Catching RPG For PC Looks Exactly Like Pokémon

Tao

@retro_player_22 I wouldn't call the original games masterpieces, not by a long shot. If not for the mechanics and visuals being very outdated by today's standards then because the games are broken buggy messes.

Gen 1 was great at the time and I loved it as any other little kid did at the time, but I can't see it as more than a necessary stepping stone these days.

Re: Mario Tennis Aces Version 3.0 Adds New Opening Movie, Ring Shot Mode And More

Tao

@StuTwo So close to four months until another Switch game that interests me comes along, assuming no delays. Smash must have been my last Switch game I bought.

I know other games have been released between then (though Yoshi is about all that springs to mind) but it's starting to feel like the beginning/end of the Wii U where there was barely anything for months on end compared to the mid life where it was like "BAM, NEW RELEASE! BAM, ANOTHER! WHOOSH! HERE'S ANOTHER NEW GAME!"

Re: Nintendo Switch And 3DS Blockbuster Sale Starts 11th April, Up To 60% Off Top Games

Tao

@zool Okay, but if you're one of the many who just keep games then the trade in value isn't really an issue.

I would also hate to be the kind of person who thinks about trade in values when I buy something.

I also question that if you're so worried about trade in values why you're not instead throwing these things on eBay where you can instead easily sell something at close to or even at the preowned market price.

Re: Nintendo Switch And 3DS Blockbuster Sale Starts 11th April, Up To 60% Off Top Games

Tao

"Whaaa, I only do physical! Physical copies are 99% cheaper! I stop gaming if they stop physical copies!"

My time to buy a digital copy of Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate is nigh. Hopefully Mario Kart 8 and/or Splatoon 2 are also on the sale...Though hopefully not since I don't spend a ton of money all at once.

I already have all of the above games but with multiplayer games like those, especially on the Switch, I find it so much more convenient to have a digital copy for when I decide after 3 months of not playing that game "huh, I feel like doing a few multiplayer matches in Splatoon".

Single player games tend to stay in my console until I've finished with them and either never get played again or only get played again years later when I've forgotten enough so playing it again feels a little fresh. Digital is a bit worthless to me there.

Re: Video: The Doom Annihilation Movie Looks Absolutely Horrifying

Tao

If they want to make a DOOM movie that's not utter garbage (but still not brilliant...Because a DOOM movie just won't work) then make it from the perspective of the demons with Doom Guy the antagonist.

The demons are supposed to be terrified of Doom Guy. He's supposed to be some beefed up monster that gores his way through legions of demons. That would be boring to watch for 2 hours and would miss the point that the demons are supposed to be terrified of this guy. Put him in the position of 'antagonist' and BOOM, you can at least show the demons being scared as this glorified slasher movie monster picks them all off one by one...And it would be unique. How many horror/slasher movies are there where the human is the monster and the monsters are hiding in cupboards?

@Lizuka Yea, but, this is Doom. The protagonist is literally called Doom Guy. Guy, as in man. The entirety of DOOM is supposed to be a testosterone fuelled white knuckle ride with everything that is commonly stereotyped towards male interests such as demons, monsters, horror, guns, violence, gore and the heaviest of metal.

And yea, it is going to far. Regardless of those examples you've given (none I care about anyway since I'm absolutely sick of super heroe movies), rather than adapting things where a woman is already the lead or creating new IP's that star a female lead, movies, games, comics and pretty much everything are constantly just gender/race swapping and replacing the lead characters in existing things. "Women need representation and somebody to identify with", well, so do men, and taking away characters some men identify with isn't the answer. There may be a lot more choice for men to go to instead, but if I really identify with a certain character I don't want to move on to something else because Hollywood has gender swapped him and give her issues I can't relate with...As I said, adapting the HUNDREDS of decent series with female leads and creating entirely new ones is the way to do it. That way, everybody is happy, nothing is lost.

Re: Video: Digital Foundry Looks At The Cutbacks In Trials Rising On Switch

Tao

@SBandy If you're wanting a certain quality for a game and own multiple platforms, Digital Foundry is great for deciding (especially with the Switch where ports get massively gutted) whether the cutbacks there are minor enough for me to think "I'll be fine with the Switch version" or "I'll go with another console/PC for this one".

Especially when it comes to framerates. If there's constant drops on the Switch, I don't want that version. If it's locked at 30fps for a shooter, I'll go with PC. If the resolution has been lowered to a certain degree, I'll go with PC since a low resolution on my TV gives me migraines (though resolution hasn't been an issue YET on Switch ports I've wanted/played).

For something like DOOM, DF did sway my decision not to buy it since a locked 30fps and inconsistent frame rates are 2/3 of the "critical strikes" to whether or not a Switch version is worth it to me. Portability doesn't cancel out a game feeling more unfair due to hardware limitations...Not to mention analogue controls in a shooter, which is a universal default reason against me buying console versions.

One for Trials specifically: shadows. Why they've cut these back is baffling to me since at its core, trials is a platformer, a 2.5D platformer to be specific. If at any point the camera is going to be moving around for 'cool angles', being able to see your shadow massively helps in landing where you want to. Among a couple of things, that adds on to the "not going to bother with the Switch version" list since it's something that fundamentally makes the game harder at certain parts in a way the game wasn't designed to be all due to hardware limitations.

So no, DF doesn't have to say a port is good for me to buy it. All I expect is for them to give me the facts and let me decide whether that port is for me or not...It's not my fault that Switch ports are often downgraded enough for me to not want them.

Re: Random: Is That Marina From Splatoon 2 On The Xbox One Dashboard?

Tao

@BarFooToo If a deal between the two was made, it seems more likely that a partnership comes because Xbox doesn't have enough exclusive titles to pad out their release schedule (not including the fact most of their exclusives are flops) alongside the fact Nintendo has absolutely no friggin' idea what they're doing with their god awful online """"""""""service"""""""""".

A case of "you scratch my back..." since it's something important that both companies utterly fail with.

Re: Review: Fight of Gods - A Comically Bad Crossover That Nobody Asked For

Tao

@Heavyarms55 Erm, excuse me, correct me if I'm wrong but I didn't see anything racist in the article or the screenshots given. Despite popular belief, no religion is a race.

I also don't see the issue. SMITE used gods and godesses, nobody ever really seemed to care about that...Ahhh, wait, sorry, that doesn't count because Zeus, Sun Wukong and Isis aren't real, but Jesus and Buddha are totally legit...

Actually, there are Hindu gods in SMITE. People only seem to care when it's Jesus or image removed.

Re: These N64 Spine Labels Are The Perfect Way To Organise Your Game Collection

Tao

@Moroboshi876 I could be wrong, but I think Smash Bros is the only box I still have. It's in awful condition if I do still have it and not fit for purpose (thus I see it as not even having the box), but I always liked the box art and kept it because of that.

Shame they dropped that art style and 'toys to life' concept almost immediately after Smash 64.

Re: Game Freak's Giga Wrecker Alt. Has Been Rated For The Switch In Taiwan

Tao

@Preposterous I imagine you could be right about not being allowed to advertise in that way.

As for dignity, eh, I don't see anything wrong with advertising themselves based off of their most popular game, not to mention the most grossing franchise. If the games are bad it won't matter who made it, but saying "we also did this thing you like" at least gives them a leg up so they don't just blend into the ton of other nameless releases each month. Even just having Game Freak a bit more prominent on the marketing would at least grab the attention of Pokemon/Nintendo fans.

Having dignity is cool n' all, but sometimes too much pride can be just as bad as having none.

Re: These N64 Spine Labels Are The Perfect Way To Organise Your Game Collection

Tao

@Moroboshi876 I would assume it is the standard situation which is why they write it as the standard, those who started collecting more recently possibly being the exception since they would likely look for boxed versions with the intent of keeping it boxed.

Whenever I've personally seen somebody's N64 games, the majority to all of them have been unboxed. I say majority, I can't think of a time I've seen a boxed game in somebody's house, but I'm leaving it open to the possibility that I've forgot. Anecdotal evidence sure, but even a sample size so small should be a hint towards the truth given these are people I know from different areas, different upbringings, different age ranges, etc, etc.

Along with parents possibly saying to get rid of the boxes, I would say that the fact Nintendo put them in flimsy cardboard boxes basically said to the customer "you're not supposed to keep this bit" and even if you did, it's likely little kids would destroy them over time anyway.

It's baffling that they continued to use flimsy cardboard when SEGA had been using plastic clam shell boxes since the Master System at least, and again it's anecdotal, but I've seen noticeably a lot more "in box" Megadrive games.

Re: Review: YIIK: A Postmodern RPG - EarthBound For A New Generation

Tao

@CharlieSmile What if the RPG has a story focused on or written around the game having a premade player character?

It's the year 2019, but that doesn't mean that every game has to pander and provide a gender option and character creator. No, not even RPG's, where I would prefer a character creation of some sort and do 99% of the time want a female protagonist. I 100% guarentee you wouldn't be complaining if there was only a female protagonist with no option for male.

Yea, females protagonists are still outnumbered by male ones, but if somebody wants to create a fixed protagonist and they happen to be male, sit down and let that person create that, FFS.

Re: Talking Point: Come In Nintendo 3DS, Your Time Is Up

Tao

I still use my 3DS, bought a game for it today in fact...But with close to 2 years extended support since the release of the Switch, I really think they should move on and stop splitting resources across two platforms that largely appeal to the same demographic.

For one, it's an 8 year old piece of hardware. Considering the fact that its portable nature meant it was already less powerful than other systems and the leaps and bounds in technology since its conception, it really shows its age at times in various different situations. True that the N3DS exists, but so long as the original does as well then a majority of games will always be held back by original hardware and judging by recent sales figures of 3DS games, I doubt any developers are going to risk releasing another N3DS exclusive.

Then there's the matter of them competing with themselves. As a portable console, I prefer the smaller clam shell design of the 3DS, not to mention battery life...But the Switch is essentially a handheld console too, the 3DS is practically competing directly with it, Nintendo vs Nintendo. Rather than continuing development across two handheld devices locking them to one platform or the other, I would very much rather just have everything release on the Switch. Especially after the barren Switch release schedule of Nintendo games in 2018, where the 3DS has had more releases than their supposed "main" console.

Back in terms of the hardware, I would rather see new releases not held back by 8 year old technology of the 3DS. Something like Wario Ware probably wouldn't have turned out much different on the Switch, but the recent Luigi's Mansion remake or Metroid 2: Samus Returns? I can't help but think they would have looked and played infinitely better on the Switch, not to mention shift more units.

I'm not going to stop using my 3DS any time soon or buying new games for it, but I really think development of new games should be pushed towards the Switch at this point. It's been fantastic that the 3DS has had 8 years, but that's really long enough as far as I'm concerned.

It's nice the the 3DS is there for people as a cheaper alternative but even then, there's 8 years worth of games on there, surely if they stopped developing new games for it there would still be tons of releases people just haven't gotten around to yet.
