A new poster for the upcoming Detective Pikachu movie has been released today, and as you can see for yourself, it gives us a great look at some of the Pokémon set to feature.
The poster comes alongside confirmation that the film will release in China on the same day as the rest of the world (thanks, Serebii). Take a look for yourself.
We still think it's looking pretty great; we can't quite believe it, but we're genuinely excited to go and see a live action video game movie. What's going on?
The film releases worldwide on 10th May. Will you be going to your local cinema to watch it?

"your favourite Pokémon"
No Buizel smh I'm boycotting Nintendo Life
Why has it taken me this long to realise that all three of the original starters are cold-blooded?
@AlexOlney I just had a similar revelation, except mine was that none of them have fur!
I never envisioned Snorlax as being so fuzzy...
Ludicolo must stink with all that damp hair.
The headline lies. None of these are among my favourite Pokemon.
Neat regardless though.
This is one of the few times I can say that I am genuinely hyped for a movie...!
Snorlax has hair? 🤔
No Zubat, so pure lies.
I find the lack of Lopunny disturbing.
Snorlax looks nice and comfy.
Seems like they edited Mr. Mime's face to resemble the game art. It'd be interesting if any international versions of the film give him that kind of facelift in the actual footage, but it's more likely not gonna go that far.
ok, puff looks wayyy better here than the trailer
Still bummed to hear they chose Ryan Reynolds over Danny Devito. Danny Devito would have been way funnier. I'm still looking forward to this though
I both want a real Snorlax because it looks fluffy as hell, but I also don't because it also looks to be something that could maul you in a moment if it decided it didn't like you.
Look at jigglypuff posing exactly like the official art from the games.
Oh my god... I flipping love Snorlax!
Now, where's my boi Gengar?
Sorry no Hawlucha, then no ticket buy from me...
So hyped for this movie!
I just wanna curl up on top of snorelax and go to sleep.
I'm curious to see how closely the movie's plot adheres to the game. FIVE. WEEKS!
Looking forward to a Snorlax shaving scene.
Charizard looks so happy to see Justice Smith. Must be a Jurassic World fan.
Why does Psyduck have hair and not ... you know... FEATHERS!!???
Read the title and got excited to see Malamar. Imagine my disappointment when it was 14 specific Pokémon.
I mean I didn’t ACTUALLY expect Malamar. But the title is pretty exaggerated when it only has 14 Pokémon, and not even every one seen in the trailers.
@fafonio I’ve always thought of Psyduck as more of a platypus than a duck, despite the name. I mean, it doesn’t have the beaver tail but it never looked very ducklike to me either.
Dewgong or bust.
I’m excited to see this movie. I will probably wait until Blu-ray unless it gets amazing reviews.
Softcore Nightmare Fuel: The Movie
Snorlax looks so comfy.
@ShadJV Malamar is underrated.
Wow! Another awesome poster! Not quite as excellent as the last one, but I like this one too!
@MeloMan Almost makes you wish for a giant fluffy Snorlax chair for Christmas!
@subpopz I mostly agree, I prefer traditional animation too. That said, there’s plenty of Pokémon anime and anime movies out there already so I’m happy with this direction. It’s fun seeing how all the critters look this time around.
Also, somehow Aipom looks adorable and scary at the same time.
Wasn't expecting Magmar or Koffing, didn't get Magmar or Koffing.
Not even Eevee.
Snorlax looks adorable!
Get switch to China
@AxeltheBuizel I waited six gens for them to create a Pokémon based on my favorite animal (the squid). I’m gonna love it regardless of how it turned out.
That being said, it’s truly a unique take on the animal and I agree it’s underrated. I wish it was more than a one trick pony in the game, but I love it either way. It’s also one of the most evil Pokémon so there’s that.
@AxeltheBuizel @ShadJV Malamar is probably one of the most used cards in the TCG so at least it gets some spotlight there We did also get Tentacool and Tentacruel as squid Pokemon in Gen 1
Still absolutely hideous.
Hollywood is completely incapable of doing any beloved Japanese property justice.
The worst crime of all, however, is the stunt casting of Reynolds playing an animated character in his everyday voice. Mel Blanc he ain't. Any idiot could have performed the role in such a bland and bemusingly uncartoon-like fashion. The biggest injustice of all is that he is most likely being paid more than all of the other cast and crew for performing the least amount of work, and the indiscerning, sheepish public will sing their praises to him.
@DrJoson tentacool and tentacruel are based on jellyfish, especially the Portuguese Man-o-war, which is quite different than a squid. But I’m glad to see the TCG gives Malamar some love!
@ShadJV : I think a lot of people outside of Australia who may not be familiar with platypuses wouldn't make the association. I think its pretty obvious by its design, but it isn't a particularly well-known animal (and only seldom seen in the wild). Fun fact, it's on our 20 cent piece.
I would absolutely love to see a Pokémon game set in Australia, and include all of the Pokémon inspired by Australian fauna (in addition to a heap of new ones). And they absolutely must include the Australian white ibis as an uncommon bird type. They have migrated to the suburbs en masse in more recent years and they are commonly referred to as (to my chagrin) as "bin chickens", "tip turkeys" and the like. No-one shall insult our beautiful native birds, dammit!
@Silly_G I’ve often been in support of an Australian region, as it’s a goldmine of fauna (and flora) that hardly would need many changes to make for interesting Pokémon (though I’m in favor of them putting their own twists on the wildlife). Plus in terms of geography, it can be pretty diverse too. Heck... I’d bet money that sooner or later it will get a region, I just hope it’s sooner rather than later.
I also would hope Komala would get an evolution. Having never been to Australia, I’m not probably as aware of a lot of the wildlife, but I know there’s plenty to draw from. Box jellyfish, dingoes, Tanzanian devils... heck, I know we have Kangaskahn but I feel like they could still do another kangaroo, something lankier and faster and possibly at least part fighting type!
@Silly_G also I think Platypuses become fairly well known internationally thanks to the cartoon Phineas and Ferb from a few years back. It was pretty popular.
This film project reeks of desperation.
I love all of them and I will protect them
@fafonio definitely feathers, there's just lots of them (and also back hair atop his head) https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Dr0WvPdWkAANkpE.jpg
I absolutely detest this. It's simply revolting. I know I am being harsh with this, but it is hideously ugly!
I absolutely hate these live action adaptations. While I give this one more credit for doing an original-ish story rather than a straight rip-off, it is so very very very ugly!
The only thing that has jumped from another medium to live action that I have liked are superhero movies. Somehow those movies have worked and in the case of the MCU have worked really well, despite big CGI purple Thanos who we all know is just a green screen effect - but no other live action CGI mess has been able to skate the uncanny valley like the MCU has.
I really like the designs.
These are about as good as live-action versions of Pokemon could EVER be.
They still retain all their personality and charm while still fitting in a real-world setting, without looking like "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?".
It's a VERY fine line and they're walking it well.
True, Charizard's skin looks like Freddy Krueger but it FITS.
@AxeltheBuizel
No Leavanny, Leafeon or Espeon...
Major lawsuit in our sights
@Heavyarms55 : They aren't really "live action" though, and any claim as such is extremely disingenuous.
The overwhelming majority of these films will be shot in front of a green screen (with the actors being one of the very few actual "live action" elements of the production) while everything else is computer-generated animation.
Green screen is virtually indiscernable in modern Hollywood films. Even scenes that you would expect to have been shot on location (especially rom coms) are mostly shot in front of a green screen. All the required CGI would explain how even the most deceptively simple-looking of films can balloon to a $100 million budget.
@ShadJV : I'm not overly familiar with child-oriented popular culture, but the Phineas and Ferb thing makes sense.
Up until about the mid 20th century, boxing matches used to be held between kangaroos (I assume the red kangaroos as they are the largest) and the boxing kangaroo was a popular mascot, I'm not sure what for, but I had a boxing kangaroo puppet in my childhood that I would make make out with my sister's Barbie dolls, so, a normal/fighting type kangaroo Pokémon most certainly makes a lot of sense.
There are plenty of extinct animals as well, the most famous perhaps being the tylacine, otherwise known as the Tasmanian Tiger, which could inspire a few new fossil Pokémon. Mythical Pokémon based on the legends of indigenous traditions would also be an awesome way to pay homage to the First Nations people.
@AlexOlney I Dont Believe Charmander Is Cold Blooded
Psyduck looks better here than in the trailers and aipom is still creepy.
