Take a moment to reflect on 2005 and you might remember the science fiction action horror film based on id Software's famous video game franchise DOOM, starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. It ended up being a box office bomb and was a movie the majority of fans and critics would rather forget. Years later, Johnson himself said it was a cautionary tale of what "not to do" when creating a video game movie adaptation.
Fast forward to 2019 and another Doom movie has been given the green light by Universal. This time, it's a "direct-to-video adaptation" due out this Fall. This sequel follows a group of space marines as they respond to a distress call on a Martian moon base, only to find out it has been overrun by demonic creatures from Hell. Here are the cast and crew involved in this "intense" and "action-packed" film:
Doom: Annihilation was written and directed by Tony Giglio (S.W.A.T.: Under Siege), and stars Amy Manson (”Atlantis”), Dominic Mafham (Ophelia), Luke Allen-Gale (“Dominion”) and Nina Bergman (The Car: Road to Revenge).
Lorenzo Di Bonaventura (Bumblebee) and John Wells (“Animal Kingdom”) executive produced, with producers including Jeffery Beach (Jarhead 3: The Siege), Phillip Roth (Death Race: 4 Beyond Anarchy) and Ogden Gavanski (Cult of Chucky).

It looks like a made for TV movie from the 90s.
Lol they still don’t get it, I can’t believe they’d make another one of these let alone keeping the ugly Doom 3 tone and aesthetic of the last one.
I just rewatched Doom on Friday. It’s good Netflix fodder for a side watch.
Meanwhile, I’ll sit here impatiently waiting for my Robotech live action film. I think it’s finally due out 2020.
Nina Bergman is also the character model for Battery in Black Ops 4.
I just witnessed a 30-second cliché.
Video games don't make good movies. I'm hopeful for Detective Pikachu, tho.
"Straight to video"
That says all you need to know about its quality, really.
Really brings nothing to the table, makes me want to watch Aliens for the 426th time.
It looks really cheap almost Sharknado cheap! Why not get Lindsey Lohan to star in it to make it even bad.
Is it a joke ? This trailer is belong to 90s movies.
Seeing that small chick handling that big gun is just so unbelievable. It's impossible to really imagine her performing in that situation. Her meleeing a monster with that gun would have like no effect on the monster.
Only way they could make it worse is if the movie starts out "hallloooo lovelleeeeee peeplllleee"
I shut it off the moment I saw the "strong female character." Talk about not getting it...
It looks a bootleg version of old Doom movie and thats saying a lot.
im not sure yet.
could be the worst thing i've ever seen or the best thing i've ever seen.
im leading worst than best though.
Just take a look at the names of the executive producers and they're credited productions. Doesn't bode well in the quality department.
Worst Imp I’ve ever seen. Great to see some practical effects for once though...
0:17 lol die die die only sounds cool by Metallica lol die my darling
@Wavey84 Was going to say the same thing!
I liked the first Doom. Rewatch it every year or two.
I also like Silent Hill, Resident Evil 1 and 2, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, and Super Mario Bros, so my taste in videogame movies isn't amazing 🤣
Doubt this new Doom will turn out better than the first one.
Edit: Wing Commander is also an enjoyable watch....just need to survive the characters cringey emotional dialogue.
This looks terrible
@AlohaPizzaJack
At first, I misread your comment as "Robotron movie", and became impossibly excited.
Looks about as much fun as the movie “Stranded” starring Christian Slater. 😆💩
I honestly thought the one with the rock looked worse.
There should be a Metroid movie! Let’s make it exactly like the games, but let’s not capture the actual feeling or tone of the series! Also replace Samus with some random guy in very plain clothing, Samus might just be too exciting for the theatri- home market!
The trailer almost put me to sleep
@Lizuka massively missing the point there. It's incredibly tiresome at the moment how much this agenda is being pushed - my partner (female just as an FYI) is already sick of it. Quality of film/series/whatever is seemingly irrelevant in comparison for 'equality' of representation, even though if this trend continues it will be anything but equal. The recent 'Bodyguard' TV series was the most overt example of this, where you had an all-female SWAT team dealing with a female terrorist (would-be) bomber. At the current rate I would not be surprised if we saw an adaptation of Metal Gear Solid where the role of Snake was assayed by a female actress. Make no mistake, I'm all for equality and think it enriches the lives of everybody concerned, however the current climate is too far one way, and quite frankly ridiculous.
Looks like a trailer of a trailer.
If you take away the logo and the brief mention of Doomslayer, I would not be able to say what the movie was about.
I wouldn't even be able to say how the main character is.
When you said 'Horrifying' I assume you meant the quality??? It looks like they used the whole $5000 budget.
looks like cheesy b rated flick. when are they gonna learn video games should not be movies thats why they are games in the first place. its not about male or female its about forcing a particular gender into the role not because they are fit for it, but because of political reason. Feminism these days is not about women's rights but about a political agenda.
@Lizuka again, missing the point - do it, but do it properly. A gradual change can be beneficial to all - note GRADUAL. This, at the moment, is akin to force-feeding, and that's why there's such a kickback.
The acting in the trailer sounds bad as it is, so it will show how the movie will be throughout. And...direct to video means a cheap budget. Not many direct to video movies were good...Tremors 2 wasn't too bad, but still, had the cheap feel. The only thing worse than direct to video, is direct to TV or a Sci-Fi exclusive. But, as long as there is a small audience that will give money to see the Games-to-movie franchise, then they'll continue making them, because Hollywood is out of ideas (which shows with the constant remakes, reboots and the now, let's bring a sequel to a movie that released 30 years ago...seriously, Beetlejuice 2 and Bill and Ted 3?). As for the games to movies that were actually enjoyable to me, I did enjoy Silent Hill (not the sequel), Super Mario Bros (being a John Leguizamo fan at the most), Mortal Kombat (was good back in the day and I'm a Christopher Lambert fan) and the Ratchet And Clank movie (kids loved it). Also, didn't really mind the House Of The Dead movie as a cheap 80's-retro-type film, but could've done without the video game showing scenes. Resident Evil felt like I missed out as it barely had any blood or gore and honestly...never bothered to watch Prince Of Persia, Assassin's Creed, Warcraft or Rampage...kind of afraid to, as Assassin's Creed looked really cheesy and for some reason, doesn't seem like a game to movie that should have had a PG13 rating...the game is Mature, the movie should have been R.
The fact the main character is a chick--or so this trailer would suggest--is just the perfect manifestation of how dumb and pandering we are as a society right now. Literally everything about Doom is masculine and for the boys/men and has been since day one, including the main character--which is not a bad thing by the way. And, whether it upsets people or not, this is precisely why it became so popular and so beloved among millions and millions of [mostly male] gamers. It's about some hardcore soldier dude--literally called Doomguy--going around kicking demon ass! Boys more than girls tend to love this kind of OTT violent and gory ass-kicking monster stuff. I know we all want to be "equal" and "inclusive" and all that stuff in 2019, but this was the dumbest place on Earth to try and make the whole "feminist" point. It's Doom for God's sake! Stop stealing things for boys/men, thing that boys/men love, in order to forward the "feminist" agenda--create your own heroes and icons! Men shouldn't have to lose something in order for women to gain something, but that's exactly what this kind of pandering crap does.
@Lizuka I hate when people like you spout this kind of misguided crap. There's a time and a place to push women into the limelight and fight for "equality" and all that--and it's not stealing the lead in an effin' Doom movie. Doom has been since day one about a badass marine called Doomguy--he's literally called Doom GUY--going around and kicking demon ass; it's not some vehicle for virtue signalling garbage. Go get your "equality" somewhere else, somewhere it actually makes sense and doesn't steal away another thing boys and men have enjoyed for a very long time now as something made for them. And, just to be clear, in case that last comment makes you cry, it's not a sin to actually make something specifically for boys and men to enjoy you know. Doom is one such game that is primarily made by, primarily made for, and primarily bought, played and enjoyed by boys and men--and this movie, apparently, has decided to spit in the face of those boys and men by pushing the "feminist", SJW, NPC, virtue signalling agenda for no good reason and in a place where it's just totally of place and totally unnecessary. Why do "feminists" and the like think it's right to give a voice to women by taking away men's voice? Having a female protagonist/hero should not come at the expense of an already well-established and beloved male protagonist/hero. That's not the right way to do it all--that just creates resentment and anger and animosity. Seriously, modern "feminists" and the like just do not get it--at all.
Wait? That wasn't a made for tv trailer? That looked like something Asylum put together for the SyFy channel. That was Hollywood!? Ouch...
Yeah, this looks to be a hot mess, and not even in the "so bad its good" kind of way. Granted, we're all in 'mindless speculation' mode here, but I wonder if this is a sort of prequel to the game where the UAC is first starting to flood with demons, and the main character is on a quest to awaken "Doomguy" right where the 2016 game starts up. The monsters from Doom games aren't nearly as recognizable as the dark green suit of Praetor Armor, which does not show up at any point in time in the trailer. So, it makes me feel like the reveal of Doomguy is going to be the big finale at the very end.
Side note: It's either going to be a "Tone deaf casting choice shoehorning a lady in to play a traditionally male role" or it's going to upset the other side of the crowd with "Female lead requires the help of a stronger male protagonist in order to save the day". Either way, can we all agree that this movie looks awful and we're already giving it more attention than it probably deserves?
@YANDMAN You must have missed the article byline, which clearly states that it's horrifying "in more ways than one"...
If they want to make a DOOM movie that's not utter garbage (but still not brilliant...Because a DOOM movie just won't work) then make it from the perspective of the demons with Doom Guy the antagonist.
The demons are supposed to be terrified of Doom Guy. He's supposed to be some beefed up monster that gores his way through legions of demons. That would be boring to watch for 2 hours and would miss the point that the demons are supposed to be terrified of this guy. Put him in the position of 'antagonist' and BOOM, you can at least show the demons being scared as this glorified slasher movie monster picks them all off one by one...And it would be unique. How many horror/slasher movies are there where the human is the monster and the monsters are hiding in cupboards?
@Lizuka Yea, but, this is Doom. The protagonist is literally called Doom Guy. Guy, as in man. The entirety of DOOM is supposed to be a testosterone fuelled white knuckle ride with everything that is commonly stereotyped towards male interests such as demons, monsters, horror, guns, violence, gore and the heaviest of metal.
And yea, it is going to far. Regardless of those examples you've given (none I care about anyway since I'm absolutely sick of super heroe movies), rather than adapting things where a woman is already the lead or creating new IP's that star a female lead, movies, games, comics and pretty much everything are constantly just gender/race swapping and replacing the lead characters in existing things. "Women need representation and somebody to identify with", well, so do men, and taking away characters some men identify with isn't the answer. There may be a lot more choice for men to go to instead, but if I really identify with a certain character I don't want to move on to something else because Hollywood has gender swapped him and give her issues I can't relate with...As I said, adapting the HUNDREDS of decent series with female leads and creating entirely new ones is the way to do it. That way, everybody is happy, nothing is lost.
Judging by the trailer, I think the only way this ends up being good is if it crosses the "so-bad-it's-good" line.
I won't hold my breath.
@ThanosReXXX This is the internet. it is ilelgal to digest and observe anything properly before mouthing off.
@Tao "Yea, but, this is Doom. The protagonist is literally called Doom Guy. Guy, as in man. Exactly--and that's not a bad thing, despite what the ignorant, misguided and insidious third-wave "feminists" would have us all believe.
Making the main protagonist a female in this particular movie (of all movies) misses the entire point by such a long way and just spits in the face of everything that this franchise is about, and who it's primarily targeted at and bought and enjoyed by, that it's not even funny--it's rage inducing.
@Wavey84 Yeah, Mortal Kombat is still the best adaptation of a videogame to movie screens: Great script, great cast, awesome action sequences, killer soundtrack, and, most of all, respect to the source material. I never liked the RE movies, they're good for a good laugh, the one that used Avatar's 3D technology was great on that aspect...and that's it. DOOM had that cool FPS sequence, it still holds up kinda well.
@YANDMAN Ah, you got me there...
This looks worse than the first movie. Impressive.
It looks sorta.....not good!
what universal studios is doing is illegal. because bathesda nor ID software is involved in this movie universal studios should have asked either of them for conscent in using their IP before making it.
If this was a random UAC scientist or marine that's helping the Doom slayer on the side like opening doors while sometimes killing off a demon or zombie focusing on her while we sometimes cut to Doom Slayer kicking all kinds of behinds it would make more sense Imo.
I mean I understand the Doom Slayer himself aint really that great for a story.
@Coffee_Drinker Sure he is. It just takes a good filmmaker that understands the character. What is the DOOM Slayer? Someone blessed by a Seraphim to never die and boast incredible strength. Who does he hunt? Demons.
All you have to do is make a movie from the perspective of the demons, and then make the DOOM Slayer a horror/slasher monster equivalent. Suddenly the mystery and lack of characterisation he has besides his wrath is no longer a problem.
I wonder if it's loosely based on the book series? Those were actually pretty good... when I was in middle school anyway.
This is funny for all the wrong reasons.
I’m relieved that Ogden Gavanski (Cult of Chucky) is behind the helm.
Dwayne Johnson and Karl Urban. Such a bad movie, but I enjoyed it as they made it fun.
Thank goodness its straight to dvd. It looks like trash!
