Update (6th Sep 2019, 17:30 BST): As a reminder, Tetris 99's physical edition is now available in North America, with the European release coming in a couple of weeks' time on the 20th September.
The bundle includes the digital game (which is already available at no extra cost to Nintendo Switch Online subscribers), all of its currently released DLC, and a 12-month membership to Nintendo Switch Online, all for a suggested retail price of $29.99 / £24.99.
Original Article (9th Jul 2019, 10:30 BST): Well, it's official: Tetris 99 is receiving a physical release in the west with the Big Block DLC included as standard.
It was probably a safe bet to assume this was coming - we had confirmation of it arriving in Japan last month, and then a recent Australian rating pretty much confirmed the version we're talking about now - but it's nice to know for sure.
The physical edition will include the main online component to the game which is already available for free on the eShop, as well as the Big Block DLC package which introduced two offline modes - CPU Battle and Marathon. You'll also get an individual 12-month subscription to Nintendo Switch Online.
Of course, the Big Block DLC itself will be getting more modes later this year, whether you buy it as part of this bundle or from the eShop. Those modes are as follows:
- Local Arena: Get up to eight friends together for a local battle!
- 2P Share Battle: Share Joy-Con controllers for a two-player game!
We don't have any pricing info for the western release yet, but we do know it's coming on 20th September in Europe - the same day as The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening.
Any physical collectors out there who want to add this to their shelves? Or are you happy enough with your digital version? Let us know in the comments below.

Sorry but Gameboy Tetris is the best
Don’t need physical... but want physical...
All about 9 ?
Tetris 99 on September 2019 ??
@Bunkerneath Nah, outdone by Tetris DS.
This is fun to give someone as a present, I think. But for me, I don't really see the need in a physical version of a purely online-based game. (even with the offline modes)
@Bunkerneath Your nostalgia is showing.
I'll put it on a wishlist, but I don't think I'll buy it for myself.
It would've been nice to know about this before I decided to buy the DLC digitally.
I already have Nintendo Switch Online via a family plan, so I would end up gifting the subscription code anyway, or saving it for when my plan expires in the event that it isn't renewed.
As expected. But why don't they launch a version without the 12 month subscription? Many of us have family plans already...
@Moroboshi876 To sell even more subscriptions, ofcourse. This way you get the game and you can start playing. It comes with a code for 12 months, so you can always resell the code.
@sanderev That's clever... If it doesn't come in a version without it that's what I'll do, thanks!
But seriously, this is just another ploy to get people to sign up. Yuck.
@TheAwesomeBowser
I have signed up and i have no regret at all. 😀
@Anti-Matter
@TheAwesomeBowser
You can deny Online Service existence all you want, but there are 10 Million Online Service subscribers right now.
It still relevant to subscribe $20 / year. 😀
Oh, btw...
Bruh comments from you toward me will not discourage me at all. 😉
I have my own Shield.
Eew. That cover art. The Limited Edition of Super Mario Maker 2 did it better. Either way, this had better be cheap. AU$40 would be sweet. I wouldn't expect it to be any lower considering that the annual subscription alone retails for AU$30.
Anyway, I'll be getting this in order to have the DLC content on cart.
Depending on the price, I might decide to sell the included subscription (if it is supplied as a code), but if it's $40, I may as well use the code for Tetris and to unlock the Smash challenges and maybe upload a Mario level or two. I can't think of much else reason to justify renewing my subscription come September 2020, however.
@hadrian GBC Tetris DX for me!
It's pure greed that Nintendo can't include a full Tetris game with Online sub.
This retail game will probably be overpriced.
Id love the physical but the online subscription that comes with it will probably drive the cost up and I already have a subscription :-/
The boxart suffers from it, that's undeniable. But depending on the price I still prefer it over a digital version for which you have to pay if you want it to be complete. And I plan on playing it after the servers are taken down, so offline Tetris 99 is a great idea. Otherwise it would be a game with the days numbered.
Time to stack another year on to my sub. Then trade the game in. I brought 1 year. Got one year free with super mario maker 2 now also with tetris 99.
@Bunkerneath Yes, absolutely true. Good argument for it being the greatest video game of all time as well.
I love Tetris... so probably will get this.
Question is, are the sub codes stackable? With this and Mario Maker 2, you could pay nothing for 2 years if you're a physical collector but only if you can stack them.
And with that, I guess Animal Crossing will come with a sub too.
@Bunkerneath Oh god no. It was fun at the time, but it's pretty slow and boring these days. Almost every subsequent iteration of the series has improved on the original in some way.
For my money, Tetris Effect, Tetris DS, and Tetris 99 are the holy trinity of this series. They're all really excellent in their own unique ways.
Tetris on NES is also really solid if you're going for a classic and influential entry.
@Angelic_Lapras_King yes they are
What do the non-free DLC components of Tetris 99 cost?
If this cost the same as the DLC plus another $10 for NO like SMM2 did I'll pick it up for my son's birthday in September. He's been playing Tetris 99 on his brother's account, who got NO with SMM2, his graduation gift.
yes please. used the free online trial to play Tetris99 to win the gameboy skin, first day first few goes came 3,2 top 5s and then 1st a couple of times and next few days won a few more times. A lot easier than I thought it would be and only had to play straight Tetris. Have my original gameboy and Tetris, 3DS with Tetris ds and 3ds Tetris, puyo puyo Tetris, and my old ps3 with Tetris I used finish 5-10x in a row daily for a while. An invisible Tetris mode in DLC would be nice, finished that first go to though cant remember which version it was. MORE TETRIS!!!
Can't wait for the fortnite physical release
@1UP_MARIO Interesting. That LA Limited Edition's goping to take a bite out of my wallet that day, but maybe for an October purchase....
@BacklogBlues everyone will renew, Nintendo has the SNES games on standby for exactly that reason... watch this space....
@BacklogBlues Mario Maker 2's selling pretty well, so I gotta imagine quite a few current annual subscribers picked up the limited edition for a few bucks more (Especially as it seems you can stack the sub codes), combined with those taking out a family plan for peanuts each, this Tetris 99 edition, and whatever they might announce between now and the 1st year anniversary (I dunno, SNES games?), it might not be as bad as millions.
Even so, there'll be plenty of kids begging for subs in November when Pokemon gets here, National Dex or not.
Well I would re-new my subscription in September anyway, so that's £17.99 anyway (I think), so if the game is only around the £25 mark, I don't mind paying a few extra quid to get it physical as well.
I doubt of course it will be that cheap, but if I ever see it for that price I would bite; otherwise I'll just stick to the subscription re-newal
In 20 years someone is going to buy this cartridge off ebay... dust off a Switch from the basement... insert it, and find what?
@MrJed That's actually a great prediction...
@holygeez03 All the offline modes that were added to the game.
@holygeez03 Jumanji
This is a cash grab. We’re paying more for less. Cartridges cost money, you know.
@holygeez03
I would think the offline content would come on the cartridge?
Anyways, I'd be really surprised if those game cards (cartridges) even work in 20 years, seeing as how it uses flash memory, as does the internal memory on a switch (which probably wouldn't work after 20 years either)
The physical version better be around $10, no way am I paying more for a puzzle game that is just Fortnite in Tetris form epecially since Puyo Puyo Tetris cost around $20.
@Anti-Matter They missed the opportunity to release it on the 9th of September.
@Abeedo No need to wait, it already exists and is, of course, overpriced.
@Bunkerneath
Nah, I loved it back in the day and it has the nostalgia factor but it’s been well surpassed now. Tetris DX, The New Tetris, Tetris DS, Tetris 99 and Tetris Effect just off the top of my head.
Tetris 99 was never meant to be fancy. I feel they handled this physical edition perfectly!
I will get it so I can have the offline modes.
@TheAwesomeBowser 20 bucks and you get to play all the classic and online play. Or you could go with ps or Xbox and pay 60 for mediocre games and online.
I think Nintendo wins hands down
Tetris is game that I jump in and out of so much a physical would just be dumb for me to have to be switching the cart constantly.
I want this so badly, but what happens if we already have the game downloaded with all of the DLC?
@Ventilator From what I've heard, the game will cost the price of the year online service, plus the price of the DLC.
@CreepyNoodles Yes.. DLC for a Tetris game..hehe
Thats as bad as microtransactions.
@Ventilator I usually think of microtransactions as the bane of all things good, but since Tetris 99 is free to begin with, I could let it slide this time.
@Dirty0814 Well hey, at least with PS and Xbox you get dedicated servers, USB backup, special offers on digital games, none of the crap Nintendo's doing.
@CreepyNoodles
Tetris is not free. 2 of 3 game modes is locked behind Paywall.
You need to pay real money to unlock single player too.
@hadrian Tetris DS inspires even MORE nostalgia, just by being an old school Nintendo remix of the classic. And the countless modes...
I keep hearing about the PSVR version, and I want to try it.
And in the earlier days of Switch we played a lot of 4-player Puyo Puyo Tetris (mostly Tetris) if that counts. Certainly a great time.
Have preordered this, Link's Awakening and Dragon Quest XI. September will be expensive.
Edit: Is it a digital code instead of cart in the case? If so, I will cancel my preorder.
The addition of the daily challenges has me hooked right back into it. Gotta get all those cool themes. I don't see the need for a physical copy though. It's one of those games you wanna boot up quickly and get a few rounds in. Having to swap cartridges isn't that appealing for a game like this.
$30.00?!
"and a 12-month membership to Nintendo Switch Online"
Oh, right, false alarm!
This would be a nice thing to buy on sale, for a deeply discounted NSO sub
@Quarth there's no cart. Its just a DLC code because the game itself is free
@Bunkerneath True, but the GB skin along with chip tune sound is pretty awesome.
Hold on... is the physical version not a game card? Really? I’m about to preorder this for when it drops in a few weeks, so if it’s just a code in the box I’ll pass
So then it’s not on the card correct? Digital only? I already downloaded and already have an online membership so this would be a pass if it’s still a code. 🤔🤔
So this is just a code in a box, correct?
Edit-Looks like it has the card.
$30 for Tetris? They need to stop smoking weed at the Nintendo Headquarters. This costs the same as the Resident Evil ports and you get more bang for your buck. Stop it Nintendo!!!
Holding off on the DLC was a good choice, nabbed this and now i'm good with my Nintendo online until November of 2020.
@Paulywally You get a full year of Nintendo online with it.
I'd buy that for a dollar.
@Paulywally With a 20 dollar worth online subscription..
I think I'll pass, but it's still not a bad deal.
what a joke of a price. I paid $30 for a family plan that I share with 5 other people and we all could play this game for free. But if you’re that convinced to “buy physical” then it’s your money to waste.
I’m hearing that math and reading comprehension aren’t some folks’ strong suit here.
You’re essentially getting a $20 sub and the $10 dlc. It’s the same price. Not more, not a deal, the same price.
I just watched an unboxing and there is a game card in the case for NA so if that’s the case here I’m gonna be getting it
I bought the physical copy of this game... and it required a 750 mg download! The total game is 1 gigobyte. Is there any good reason Nintendo couldn't have put the entire game on the cart? Or are they just that cheap? Seriously, what's the point of a physical copy if it only contain 25% of the game?
@HobbitGamer Exactly this. If I wasn't already subscribed to NSO and didn't already buy the DLC, I'd have bought this in a heartbeat.
@HobbitGamer now now hold on there. Stop being so reasonable. Your making too much sense. This is the internet where people want to be angry after a hard days work. 😉
It's nice but why $30, $15 would be understandable. Puyo Puyo Tetris is the same price and that had both Puyo Puyo and Tetris.
@retro_player_22 it comes with 12 months NSO subscription and all the offline Dlc. It’s actually more expensive if your getting the NSO subscription on its own and then paying for the dlc
@retro_player_22 The physical version of Puyo Puyo Tetris for Switch launched at $40 (and came with bonus keychains). The eShop version was $30 (one of the few times the digital version wasn’t the same price as the physical version).
In Canada it's better to pay both alone than with this bundle... So it's a big NO for me!
What's the point in buying physical? There is nothing collectable about switch software where you only get a card and a box. When I was a lad you got lovely instruction booklets, posters, flyers and care leaflets. Mmmm care leaflets.....
@USWITCH64 Good points. The biggest advantage today would be to trade cartridges with friends or reselling the game later.
Imo Tetris ds is the daddy
@Tandy255 yeah I get the resell aspect on other games, but obviously this game is free online
@GuruOfGreatness
21.85 GBP on base:
https://www.base.com/buy/product/tetris-99-nso-uk-subscription-nintendo-switch/dgc-tetrisolns.htm
From reading the article it seems this is just a digital download in a physical case. Is this correct?
Feels like a good way to get a low price of switch online into physical stores. This way there's a physical case to stand out rather than a mere card like other similar online services in physical stores. More like an advertisement.
@Bunkerneath True, but Tetris DS should be runner up with Tetris Party in third place.
Let me see if I can possibly understand this, Nintendo FINALLY has the rights to Tetris again and this game in no way even remotely resembles Tetris DS!? Note to Nintendo: EVERY single Tetris game I've played since Tetris DS has been a BIG disappointment by comparison to your DS masterpiece... just something to consider.
@Silly_G
You can get these covers for practically any game on Etsy for $6 each. I get them for all my JP Imports with JP writing on the spine. Super high-quality so good I can’t even tell the difference between official cover art, and every single one of them comes with inside artwork as well. Made to look 100% official.
@Moroboshi876 when exactly are you thinking the servers will be down?
@JDORS : That's monumentally stupid. It looks like they have only included the "base game" on the cartridge (which, due to its online heavy nature and the DLC wouldn't be playable without the update anyway).
I only wanted this so that I could have the offline multiplayer content on the cartridge, but since Nintendo have opted to monumentally screw this up, I'm tempted to pass. Why even bother issuing a physical release at all, then? Nintendo should have just done so when they were confident that they would no longer be updating the software.
It could very well be the case that some of the update data is in fact on the cartridge, but the way that updates work is that the update is identical even if you have a latter version of the game on cartridge, so it will occupy the same amount of data either way (which is very wasteful as well due to the Switch being a portable device with limited memory).
@Ventilator pretty idiotic to say Nintendo is greedy when Tetris was released for free to online subscribers! 20 bucks a year!!!! Lol.
@rxchrisg Whenever the Switch is discontinued. But before that there will be a time when it will be difficult to find 98 other people to play. Of course, it won't be soon.
@Emperor-Palpsy well lets get physical, physical, lets get physical. You reminded me of that song. LMAO
@Bunkerneath Totally agree!! I've loved that version ever since I played it on my Game Boy as a 10 year old and was still playing it on my GBASP until 2013. Never got tempted by later GBC and DS versions but now I've got a hankering for the late 3DS version (alas not longer available on the European eShop) and since I don't have a Switch yet I'm not in a rush to get Tetris 99 unless it can match and improve the original formula (experience and bells on)😒
P. S added you on my 3DS🎮👍🏾
@Kobeskillz When 2 of the 3 game modes is locked behind paywall it's NOT free.
@Ventilator lol. Stupid. These modes were added afterwards. Pay the measly 10 dollars if you want it. The base game is 100% freee I’ve played 50 hours and not gave Nintendo a dime other than the online service I would have already paid for. You know since it’s dirt cheap and I play online with my switch. Gamers are so entitled these days. God forbid they pay but are willing to spend hundreds on Fortnite and other micro transactions.
So does this physical edition mean I can play it offline on a train yet?
@Kobeskillz thank you. I get to play smash,Splatoon (my favorite game),Mario Kart,and Mario maker online,plus 8 and 16 bit classics,for 20 bucks a YEAR.
It’s baffling to me that some people don’t like that
@Silly_G I'm guessing either the update wasn't ready in time to be included on the physical carts or Nintendo is just being super cheap and using the least expensive cart possible. I wouldn't be shocked if it is the latter.
@Kobeskillz Hello again.
You were right. If you only play online you don't need the other modes.
Today i bought Tetris 99 physical for only 20 bucks.
The retail includes 12 month online, so the extra modes and physical cart were free then.
As for microtransactions in other games, i never support that.
