@WheresWaveRace Personally I think they'd just release Galaxy 3 without doing 1 + 2 if they were doing that. I don't think Nintendo would want to confuse casual buyers and risk burning people out with multiple games.
@Uncle_Franklin I can't see them supporting it beyond 2026 either. The fact that the upcoming 2D Yoshi game isn't coming to it (even though it could easily run it) indicates they're not really doing the duel release thing that Sony did for years. Same with Poketopia really. It seems to more be games already announced before Switch 2 came out they're doing that.
It'll probably just be more niche and weird smaller games they release on Switch 1 next year (stuff similar to Tomodachi Life and Rhythm Heaven) plus ports of Yoshi's Wooly World and Kirby's Epic Yarn or the rumoured Kirby Planet Robobot port.
@Thomystic Exactly. I like this model more than Virtual Console because I only ever brought games I had nostalgia for on there but I've discovered so many great games I didn't know about through NSO (Another being Survival Kids) So it works better for me.
And I don't care if I don't own them as I don't intend to play them for the rest of my life as I'll be playing other games. I usually just play the new ones as they come up. If I really want to revisit something one day should NSO shut down or start removing games there are many other ways of playing them anyway.
Won't be buying this. The Emerald Rush mode is based on the gameplay element I disliked the most in Bananza (mindless button bashing) and that empty DK island looks like lazy nostalgia baiting at it's worst 😔
And the game was already a bit much in this regard, literally calling the throwback level Nostalgia Country which I found kind of on the nose and almost cynical :-/ It actually makes me feel less nostalgic if the game tells me I'm meant to feel nostalgic at that point, instead of it just occurring naturally.
@The_Nintendo_Pedant The annoying thing is they put a version of Street Fighter 2 on NSO but... it's the Mega Drive/Genesis version 👎🏻
It's funny how much different sound effects and music can taint the nostalgia you have for games. The sound chips were so distinct back then. I had the same problem when I brought the Switch version of Flashback which used the Amiga version and not the SNES one I grew up with.
They never acknowledge this surprisingly addictive 1989 gem! Yes it's a side scrolling platformer with levels and an original game. It was really impressive for the tech it was using, with traps like spinning platforms and tight vertical platforms you had to jump through without being crushed (it was an auto runner) Bullet bills, Lakitu and others obstacles to dodge.
Plus it got faster and faster as you went through the levels. I can't remember if I ever even managed to complete it as a, kid.
I was so disappointed when the so called 35th Anniversary "Game and Watch" was just a NES rom and not the real Game and Watch Super Mario Bros.
As a matter of fact they should bring Game and Watch to Nintendo Switch Online!
I'd like a collection with the console versions of Street Fighter instead of the arcade ones. Particularly the SNES versions of Street Fighter 2! Also the Street Fighter EX games have yet to be re-released in a collection.
@Sylamp @MrFrog Oh I thought it knot had that disclaimer on sites for games that supported that as I don't think it says it on the Kirby and the Forgotten Land and Donkey Kong Bananza site.
FYI the Japanese site says it has a mouse mode too and that the music player is in game like the one in Mario Odyssey.
Why wasn't any of this stuff in the Direct and we have to find this stuff out like detectives? It didn't even mention the free Switch 2 4k/120fps upgrades. Just made it sound like a couple of roms for Switch 1 only.
As I've said before Nintendo's PR seems to be rwakky bad if not non existant this generation for some reason. They keep doing themselves no favours.
@Yoshi3 Fair enough but how are they "forcing" you to pirate it? That's your choice you're making instead of other options such as waiting for it to go on sale (yes, their games go on sales both physically and digitally) buying a used copy for cheaper or simply not buying it and playing other games.
US. That very 80s style of game art that fell out of fashion some time in the 90s is just so nostalgic to me and looks fantastic. Reminds me of my old Commodore 64 game covers.
I'll buy Mario Galaxy 2 in some form as it's the one 3D Mario I've never played so tbh playing it for the first time as the Switch 2 upgrade in remastered 4k (or 1080p in 120fps) will be pretty much like a new game for me!
I might just buy the physical and then sell it on to CEX when completed then use the voucher towards a used Kirby Air Riders or Metroid Prime 4 in the coming months.
As an aside it's really weird Nintendo didn't mention the free Switch 2 upgrade in the Direct. Once again they do themselves no favours I question what's going on with their PR lately.
I'm playing through Yoshi's Island for the first time at the moment to mark it's 30th Anniversary (only played bits of it before) and am really blown away by the creativity, especially the variety of enemies and just weird scenarios like the "drug" level and playing inside a frog's stomach! And it's so stunningly beautiful it's often hard to believe I'm playing a Super Nintendo game!
It's curious that they kind of did away with a lot of the creativity, challenge and faster pace in the Yoshi games that followed and kind of turned it more into Mario for younger or more casual players. Especially as 2D Kirby fulfills a similar role.
@chickje The Prisoning: Fletcher's Quest looked potentially fun to me. Unfortunately they lost all their franchises when they went bankrupt and they got sold off to others. A group of investors just decided to buy the name and become an indie game publisher.
I'm predicting a new Wario Land game or some kind of Wario platformer, based only on the fact that they randomly released Wario Land 3 and 4 icons on NSO very recently! Nintendo rarely acknowledges Wario Land most of the time.
@Jujuman Yeah, the more I'm reading about this it seems to be a nothing-burger and something Nintendo and other companies do all the time.
Here is one of Nintendo's Breath of the Wild patents for instance... certainly not a new mechanic either and I'm pretty sure there's been countless games with such a mechanic since TOTK released:
They updated their Dual Screen patent three weeks ago too 👀
Personally think Switch 2 would be a bit too large and bulky with a second screen though. Maybe if they made a Switch 2 Lite the same size as the original Switch Lite.
@Coalescence Interesting, so companies always patent things like this? But yeah I'd like to know the real practical ramifications of this anyway from people who actually know about these things (eg, law and patenting experts) before becoming too outraged, including whether this can or will in fact be used and what the existence of earlier games with the same mechanics would mean for it.
Especially as there's been so much misinformation, ragebaiting and hyperbole around whatever Nintendo does since the Switch 2.
@GrailUK Lots of RPG's had such a mechanic before Pokemon. SNES Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest games and even some 80s games like Ultima and Wizardry. I think Golden Axe let you summon dragons to attack enemies too.
@TYRANACLES Because the first two games were actually well reviewed and pretty popular. It was 3D where everything fell apart. The assertion that "none" of the games were good is a modern meme.
@KaiserGX I don't really like the filters must either. I use the soft one but they look far too much like arcade screen filters IMO and most of the games I've tried so far feel much more like Commodore/ZX Spectrum home computer type games.
@sketchturner I played almost 10 hours on the first two games alone! The bug hunting one in particular is super addictive for me and it's funny as I'm not even a Strategy game fan normally but it makes me want to explore the genre more.
Weird, my icon is the same even after restarting the console? Maybe I have to redownload.
As an aside I feel like Nintendo really did this amazing game dirty by not including a full trailer explaining what it's about in their Partner Showcase and just throwing it into a Sizzle Reel.
I can't speak for other countries but Is This Seat Taken? and Tiny Bookshop which they highlighted fully have been consistently in the top 10 download games on the UK eShop since the Partner Showcase but UFO 50 currently sits at number 32 😔
@FlyingDunsparce @The_Nintendo_Pedant I'd argue that people who HATE a certain game series (as the reviewer seems to) aren't best suited to review a collection of them in the first place. The fact that the review contains a major error in saying all the Bubsy games are here (there's two games missing) perhaps justifies my view.
I'll be getting it as I have a lot of nostalgia for the SNES GAME (that one was good IMO) and would like to try the others, especially the infamous Bubsy 3D!
Also the series has a genuinely interesting backstory like the Bubsy 2 developers hanging his plushy (by a noise) in the office and Bubsy 3D developers trying to make one of the first 3D platformers and being horrified when they saw Mario 64 for first time! Looking forward to hearing more about this in the video interviews. To me it's like Tetris Forever, in that I'm partly buying it for the historical significance and interest in the franchise story. And bad games can be entertaining in a funny way, just like bad films!
It's really sad that his creator died recently and won't see Bubsy 4D which has potential to be first really great Bubsy, being developed by the Demon Turf team who I have a lot of faith in.
With so many of the major publishers treating Switch 1 like a dirty stepchild and making poorly optimised ports (despite the huge install base) this is really heartening to see and bodes well for the future.
I read an interesting message from a reliable insider on Resetera that Nintendo was working with third party developers to find a way to make Series S ports very easy to make.
@Rebusmind
I had several occasions where guards would run off into the distance (even through walls) when they noticed a knocked out guard instead of investigating what happened.
They were traumatised and scared by what they saw and ran away.
@AverageGamer Surely a demo doesn't take many resources or much time to make given it's just taking a small section of the full game that's been finished with development (bar later patches) and releasing it on it's own? Not like it's new content.
@SBandy1 @JohnnyMind Didn't Star Wars Outlaws release on the other formats a year ago though? So that 75% is gonna be very skewed by that really as most with other formats will already have it by now.
@Olliemar28 Thanks! So looks like proper digital might be doing better.
I wonder if Game Key Cards are doing worse in Europe as I noticed Pac-Man World Re-Pac 2 is digital only here but getting a Game Key Card release in US.
@Real_Obsi Because some people seemingly don't realise games at expos that are still mid development are pre-release builds or they know but just enjoy creating a drama anyway, especially some of the more trashy and desperate Youtube channels
@MatthewTaranto I totally agree there and I've not seen many people talking about that. Nintendo could've easily made a safe "more of the same but better graphics" Mario Kart title and come out with a 3D Mario rather than a Donkey Kong with highly unusual playstyle. Wheelchair Basketball and a sequel to the relatively obscure Kirby Air Ride was a leftfield move too!
The creative freedom and "weirdness" of Nintendo at the moment might cause polarisation but it's reminding me a lot of GameCube era Nintendo which is when they were at their most interesting and unpredictable I think.
Excellent for me, Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza are some of the best Nintendo games I've played in years (I didn't care about TOTK as am not a fan of the open world Zelda) even though MKW could do with some Quality of Life changes to make it even better. Also am really loving Chibi Robo and the fact that I can now play some, or my favourite Switch 1 games like Disaster Report 4 at a massively better framerate.
I do find the comments about a lack of games bizarre, especially as someone who lived through consoles like N64, 3DS and Wii U... Everyone talks about the "personality" of the Directs in the Iwata era but nobody wants to talk about the fact that the reason they did all these random skits and comedy bits is because most of the time they barely had anything to show and fill up the time.
Like how many games do people need? I've put 70 hours into Mario Kart World and 30 into Donkey Kong Bananza alone and in between Switch 2 releases I play Switch 1 stuff in my backlog, new indie titles (For Switch 1 or 2) and NSO titles. I could NEVER have nothing to play.
@SplatRay001 Actually was a story on here about how they had to remove and adjust various assets in the Switch 1 version of Splatoon 3 to create parity. It could've been that there's so many mini games it would be too difficulty to not cause issues.
I do think it might be related to that as none of the other Switch 2 editions are like this and in theory would be pretty simple to just upgrade the resolution and it actually already is if you run the base mini games from the Jamboree TV section.
@SplatRay001 It only ran at 720p undocked on Switch 2 if you ran the base Mario Party Jamboree from the title screen on Switch 2 presumably is just be referring to when it's undocked with the 1080p upgrade? It doesn't sound like they updated it Docked, though I think I heard having it higher than 1080p might cause compatibility issues with the online against Switch 1 players
Hoping for Yoshi's Wooly World and Galaxy 2 coming as they're two of the only Mario platformers (if Yoshi series counts as that) I've not played.
Plus Mario Kart World QOL updates allowing us to track the P Switches and race online without intermissions. Music playlists, volume slider and proper 2 player Free Roam with P Switches would be nice too.
European one is strange but I feel like it would've stood out more on the shelves. I definitely would've been more intrigued than if I saw the other two and have to look at the back of the box to see what it's about.
@echoplex This developer has lots of interesting looking games on there. I have a feeling there's a treasure trove of Japanese indie gems underscovered by Western audiences on the eShop. 🤔
