Great music as expected from a Sonic game, but I'm still not sure about this one. Looks a bit lifeless and stiff compared to Mario Kart World. Plus the inclusion of things like Spongebob and Minecraft is VERY offputting, especially when that could've been SEGA franchises instead. :-/
And we also have Kirby Air Ride and Garfield Kart 2 (LOL) coming this, year, as well as F-Zero GX and Fast Fusion already, so Switch 2 is seemingly very saturated for arcade racing games!
@Itsashame See post above for how harsh some were about it. Yeah I never agreed with most of the criticism either, definitely one of my favourites in the series and it had so much cartoony character and charm which I feel like World has brought back after the slightly more serious feeling 7/8. They both have that Wacky Racers type vibe. Be interesting to see how World is spoken about in 20 years time!
@LikelySatan Oh really? Critics said the same. Mario Kart Double Dash remains the lowest rated Mario Kart title at launch. For instance GameSpot and IGN both gave it 7.9 while Mario Kart DS got 9.1/9.5.
Edge Magazine (one of the most respected gaming souces at the time) gave Double Dash 5/10 and said:
“There are 16 courses on offer, and one of them is a ten-second dodgem track… even if you are the best karter in the country, you still cannot guarantee anything. It is often an acceptable game, an average one.
The co-operative mode, in which one player drives and the other throws stuff, is neat, though mostly redundant given that most pairs will prefer to drive a kart each. Mario Kart isn’t a racing game any more. It is a party game, and anyone buying it for anything more than frantic, foolish, social fun will grow tired of being cheated very quickly indeed
@Itsashame It's interesting isn't it, I was on a lot of the big gaming forums back in the day and Kirby Air Ride was ripped to pieces as the poster child for "Nintendo is for babies" because it used only one button to control. I remember all the memes of the GameCube controller with one giant A button on it.
Funnily enough Mario Kart Double Dash was the most hated Mario Kart too for very similar reasons to Mario Kart World. "Big wide boring tracks" "too much of a random party game" "too gimmicky and not enough options" A lot of people REALLY didn't like that there was no four player driving Grand Prix and two people were forced to play as the "boring" role of throwing the items. The concensus was that Mario Kart DS was a return to form for the series.
Funny how time changes things and now these games are appreciated for their unique features!
Edit: I found the old Kirby Air Ride GameCube controller meme!
@Bigmanfan Interconnected tracks are included going by the rules in the practice room. I'm sure The Internet will take this news very reasonably and maturely, especially the YouTubers.
@RupeeClock I just checked and someone called Stealer Dan DID make 45th Anniversary one already and the sign up date is exactly the same month as the 40th Anniversary one highlighted here (July 2020) so this is almost definitely fake...
@Bunkerneath Yeah I'd buy it on eShop on sale as I loved the SNES game!
Have to say I'm baffled as to how the special physical edition of this would be anything but a massive loss maker for Limited Run Games? Surely there's not enough hardcore Bubsy fans, if any, for such a product? I can't imagine anyone wanting a Bubsy soundtrack CD or posters of him in their room...
@PinderSchloss They should've made it Switch Sports Wheelchair Basketball with Miis. On top of being a bold move and very cool for people on wheelchairs it would've given the game more character which it sorely lacks.
But yeah @WhiteUmbrella that's a good point about no accessibility options and it wouldn't really be possible I don't think as anyone could play regularly then and it would make it too unfair against the people using mouse controls. So many that's why Nintendo didn't lean too much into the wheelchair aspect too.
BTW I think the game is developed by someone less NST or Next Level Games rather than their Japanese teams given the developers when they played have names like Oliver and Connie. Which might also explain the more Western/Rocket League type aesphetic.
@PJOReilly Was it the Commodore Plus/4 version? I don't think I even know anyone else who had one of them! I loved Jack Attack, Out On The Limb, Mr Puniverse and Exorcist on it too. And I remember loads of text based adventure games with only typing on it.
Wait, what other games are there like this where you have to seat people according to preferences? Unless I'm missing some similar games I don't know of I can't agree with that at all. :-/ It seems a very original idea and I've not played anything quite like it.
@Solid_Python Yeah, I was confused by that when the developers of games like Mouse Works and Is This Seat Free? (which look far better) have been unable to get one, although I learned that Oink Games (the developer) previously made a Pokemon board game in Japan so I suspect they have a strong relationship with Nintendo or were well trusted
It's more fun than I expected and I actually got pretty good at it (worked well using my legs for the mouse surface) but not sure it's something I'd want to pay £17.99 for.
If it was a Free to Play title (maybe with NSO?) I'd probably play it once in a while but I have a feeling charging for it might cause it to die like Kirby's Dream Buffet did 😕
@Dman10 Agreed and what will they do if the Switch 1 version requires a download to play too because the whole game isn't on the cartridge or it requires a patch?
@BoFiS I think it's digital only in Europe anyway, unlike US that gets game key card. That's what it said on the UK Partners Showcase. Only Switch 1 version getting physical.
It makes sense. I think Nintendo's been losing a lot of the kids audience to stuff like Roblox, Fortnite and Minecraft in recent years, especially as Pokemon arguably doesn't even have the same cultural pull as it once did.
@AeonicB It should be fine I think. If a game isn't Switch 2 compatible you simply aren't able to download it from the Switch 2 eShop and it's on there.
UFO 50 and Toree Saturn for me. Just brought "Is This Seat Taken?" after trying the demo on Steam too, although it's not on this list for some reason, but came out today too.
I really enjoyed this, much better than the Partner Showcase!
"Is This Seat Taken?" has a demo on Steam if anyone's interested. I'm trying it out now and really enjoying it. It's kind of adorable. Relaxing and different.
@YAT It's not great if it stops people enjoying their games or hardware as much because they point out things that people might not have noticed otherwise, which sadly I've seen.
One of my favourite Switch games was Disaster Report 4 which ran at an appalling framerate, although it didn't really need a great one. The humour, originality and ability to craft your persona into so many different personalities more than made up for it for me. I wonder if the guys at DF would be able to still enjoy a game like that. Probably not.
Good for them but can't say I'm a fan of what they do (obsessing over performance and often making mountains out of molehills IMO) and it's influence on the wider gaming community. Feels like the antithesis to how Nintendo thinks about games.
But that's just me, I guess some people get something out of their stuff.
@Xansies Yeah, is it some kind of 4D Chess? Do they think by doing stuff like putting UFO 50 in the Sizzle reel they'll get people talking about it more because everyone will be commenting on their bizarre behaviour? Are they purposely trying to start micro dramas to keep Switch 2 being talked about? Maybe that's giving them too much credit, but I know Outrage Marketing is a thing sometimes and at times it feels like they enjoy messing with people.
@cylemmulo Even asides from UFO 30 I'd have preferred if it was 25 - 30 minutes long if it meant trailers for all those games. I don't like the Sizzle Reel thing.
@cylemmulo Yeah I'm really pleased about this game! BUT they must've known this game was hugely sought after and it's quite a big deal, so why did they only put in a Sizzle Reel? Especially when it's out today!
Is it just me or Nintendo's PR is really off lately and they've lost their ability to read the room? Same with giving that campfire game so much time in the Partners direct. They seem to do weird things like this all the time now, why didn't they tell us we can use the mouse in Mario Picross/Nobunaga's Ambition and that they'd improved the SNES CRT filter either? Small things maybe, but they should be bigging up any wins or new games/features people would enjoy.
I don't know, but I seem to notice this a lot from them lately. Like even going back to the Switch 2 reveal they didn't say anything about all the free Switch 2 game upgrades, we found out after. Basic PR would say stuff like that would be good to highlight to counteract the other decisions like not packing in Welcome Tour etc.
Then I ask why the devs of Handy Hockey and the Campfire game have Switch 2 dev kits but Nitrome, the developers of Mouse Works don't even though their game looks way more interesting?
It's really weird and feels like they're becoming more isolated, cut off from the wider gaming world and eccentric even by their normal standards.
We're not the only one noticing this pattern right? I mean I'm happy with the games and the way Switch 2 is going personally, but it feels like Nintendo's doing themselves zero favours a lot of the time right now.
I think it's silly when people claim Nintendo doesn't care about DK consistency (outside of spin offs) when Odyssey had so many references to the events of the original Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Country made many references to Cranky being the Kong in that game. It's only with Bananza they decided to throw the narrative they consistently crafted themselves over decades for whatever reason 🙄
@datamonkey The 3DS version was quite disappointing. Got to say the SNES version holds up remarkably well IMO and feels a lot less dated than the other "3D" SNES games like Super Mario Kart, Star Fox and Stunt Race FX which I found harder to go back to.
@Ade117 They're not tech demos at all. They're full games with missions and progression apart from the Birdman mode on the N64 game. What a strange comment.
OMG, Pilotwings acknowledged by Nintendo! I'm a big fan and the "waaaah wah wah wah" song from the SNES game (if you've played it you know the one) used to crack me up as a child.
Wishful thinking maybe but I wonder if suddenly adding the whole Pilotwings series like this might mean they're planning to reveal a new one for Switch 2 and want to bring it back into the limelight. I note that they randomly added 3 Nobunaga's Ambition SNES games to the eShop before a Nobunaga's Ambition game was revealed to be a Switch 2 launch game.

@Anti-Matter What if it was a Garfield Kart 2 direct?
Re: Kirby Air Riders Direct Revealed for Tomorrow, 19th August 2025
@BenAV Most of the modes were racing modes as I recall though and we don't know what they're doing with the sequel yet.

45 minutes seems so weird! Must be presented by Sakurai and there'll be lots of talking bits.

Easy win for Japan and they should put this on NSO! It was on Virtual Console.

@jojobar The SNES version was good as I recall!

@Nintendomatt64 It does have Bubsy 3D, it's in the trailer
Is this coming to eShop, it's not just a physical right? 🤔
