Re: Yoshi And The Mysterious Book Lands Switch 2 Release Date

ShadLink

@Grumblevolcano Why would it be? Pokopia is in it's core a multiplayer game, and a small download size. This game is 20 GB (according to the Nintendo US site) and it looks single player to me. I'd say this is a cartridge game.

According to the Dutch My Nintendo store it's full cartridge release. The boxart show the "Nederlandstalig" text to indicate it has the Dutch language. But there is no text indicating it is a GKC. There is a €10 upsell for the Cartridge release as usually, though. https://store.nintendo.nl/nl/yoshi-and-the-mysterious-book-70010000119860

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (7th March)

ShadLink

For me this weekend.

Pokémon Pokopia
Animal Crossing
Resident Evil 9 (PC)
Guild Wars Reforged (PC)
Pokémon Legends Z-A

I tried the Fatal Frame 2 Demo on Switch 2 and PC. PC is looking better than Switch 2, but the controls on the PC version are horrendus if played with keyboard and mouse. (I don't like playing PC games with a controller, though). Might skip on the release.

Also building Lego Eevee this weekend

Re: Xbox Announces Next Generation Console, Will Play "Xbox And PC Games"

ShadLink

@Kilamanjaro Sony honestly has the same issue as MS. (when talking about exclusives)

But if Nintendo would buy XBOX from MS we would have games with power.

To me, I don't really care about power. So I am very happy with my Switch 2. For powerful games I play I pick my PC. I haven't touched my PS5 or XBOX Series X in months. And will not be buying a PS6, I might get Project Helix IF it has a Desktop mode. (so I can use it as a PC) or a Steam Machine if the price is right.

Re: Xbox Announces Next Generation Console, Will Play "Xbox And PC Games"

@GrailUK With Windows Microsoft is already leading the gaming market (on PC). SteamOS / Linux only is a very small market share in general. Most gamers, including Steam gamers, play on Windows.

This is going to be a PC (Windows) that boots into the XBOX Experience mode (already on the ROG and other handhelds). It might block desktop access though, but I doubt that (on the ROG Ally you can still access the Windows desktop and install any Windows app, I think this will be the same in that regard). Basically making this a competitor to the Steam Machine and not really the PS6 or Switch 2

Re: Talking Point: After 30 Years, Is It Time To Reset The Pokédex?

ShadLink

I hope they never do this. It's like making a Mario game without Mario or a Zelda game without Zelda and Link.

Added; I do als not think they should do it like in Gen 5. But I think they should rotate the Pokémon that is in a certain games' dex a lot more. So, do not put Charizard in every game. Sure Pikachu should stay. But also put more focus on Pokémon from later generations or even regional forms. They should also keep the Dexit and only limit a game to certain Pokémon.

Re: Pokémon Pokopia For Switch 2 Receives A Day One Update

ShadLink

Sure there haven't been that many exclusives, but there have been many games for Switch 2 (Switch 2 Editions or Exclusives) since launch. In 2025 there have been more Switch 2 games than PS5 and XBOX Series games combined.

The "not many games" complaint is basically just. "Nintendo announce the next Mario/Zelda game already!!" And that is just unfair to every other game Nintendo has released.

They could have easily made Metroid Prime 4 and Pokémon Legends Z-A Switch 2 exclusives, but them deciding against doing is honestly a good move by Nintendo.

Re: Pokopia Joins A 3DS Entry As The Highest-Rated Pokémon Game On Metacritic

ShadLink

@andykara2003 Gen 4 and Gen 5 (Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, SoulSilver, Black, White, Black 2, White 2), are the games that have the best "core" Pokémon gameplay. They are the last generations before they started adding "gimmicks" (Megas, Z-Moves, exp. share, etc) but since the core really hasn't changed much beyond that. Well.. except for the Legends games

Re: Pokémon Pokopia For Switch 2 Receives A Day One Update

ShadLink

@rjejr Since the start of the year Nintend has been releasing new video's, new trailers, Indies, Partner Directs, Pokémon presents, game updates, Switch 2 editions, new releases, every single week. Sure I want them to make a general Direct as well.. but it's not that they're doing nothing.

Re: Review: Pokémon FireRed & LeafGreen (Switch) - Red-Hot Nostalgia In A So-So Wrapper

ShadLink

@RobbEJay The Switch version works with local wireless multiplayer. Exactly like how it did on the GBA, but without an adapter. But that wouldn't work for online, since you at least need a (connection to a) matchmaking server to do that. Which the GBA game does not have.

I am talking about this screen:
Untitled

It's the NSO-app that allows you to play over the internet. It then hooks in on the wireless/link cable connection of the played GBA/GB/GBC game to allow for multiplayer.

I am guessing here. I think the FireRed / LeafGreen games run on the same emulator that is inside the NSO app. And it automatically starts a local wireless connection as soon as you start one in game. (quite easy, just read the memory and add a hook). Switch local wireless is not using a router or modem to create a network, but just uses Nintendo's own standard to directly connect two or more systems locally. (Some games allow for LAN play, like MarioKart, which does require a router) Creating this local connection disables the connection to the internet. (this is the case for all Switch games that have both local and internet connections) So you will need to have an option to do either local wireless multiplayer or online multiplayer. And this something a GBA game can't do.

For some reason the rerelases do not have the NSO app menu. And I am guessing here this is because of how Pokémon Home connects to these games. Pokémon Home can't read the save games of the NSO apps for some reason.
So you would have to choose: add online multiplayer or add home support. And I am happy they picked option B here. Since I do not care about online multiplayer for a 22 year old game. I do want to play with these Pokémon in Pokémon Champions though.

Re: Review: Pokémon FireRed & LeafGreen (Switch) - Red-Hot Nostalgia In A So-So Wrapper

ShadLink

@Tibob Actually even Nintendo has it in the NSO games. But adding online to Pokémon would require some sort of room system to be added (which the NSO apps have) so it would require them to basically make a NSO app for the Pokémon games.
But those won't work with Home. So it's a double edged sword. Do you want online multiplayer or do you want Home support?(and let me guess... Pokémon Champions).

Re: Review: Pokémon FireRed & LeafGreen (Switch) - Red-Hot Nostalgia In A So-So Wrapper

ShadLink

"No new content"
It's a GBA game emulated. What new content would you suspect it had? If it had any it wouldn't be the same game...

"No online functionality"
Sure, this can be a downside. But I don't see how you would be able to add "online functionality" to a GBA game. Sure the NSO games have it, but this isn't a part of it.

"The screen is framed with uneven black bars"
Yup. They scaled it to the best scale for the Switch (2) screen. Which means you get black bars.
