Re: Random: Experience The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild With PlayStation VR

Rudy_Manchego

I may give this a go at some point but it will be little more than a gimmick in terms of quality.

VR needs games designed for it, that play to its strengths rather than adapt what is there already. The best PSVR games are ones that wouldn't be the same without the use of VR. Game devs are just learning what does and doesn't work.

Also, VR isn't for everyone at this stage in its lifecycle.

Re: Anniversary: Nintendo Switch Launched Two Years Ago Today

Rudy_Manchego

The Switch is the first ever console I got in launch week in my life. I think Nintendo played a blinder in offering a device that is unique and sits neatly besides other gaming platforms. For once it is not an either or but compimentary. I have a PS4 and XB1 and I play those a lot but I always have a Switch game on the go too.

Breath of the wild started as a game I could not get into but as the console was new I persevered and finally ‘got it’ and I have since spent over 125 hours. Probably the most time I have ever spent on one game.

Re: Soapbox: Nintendo's Maddening Stance On Retro Gaming Is Driving Me To Piracy

Rudy_Manchego

As an artform, gaming has a shelf life that is determined by the move of technology. I love the GC but playing those games now isn't as easy as just plugging in the console. I need a compatible TV or some sort of mod for newer TV's. I need to maintain all the gear and that is just ONE console.

For people with no interest in retro gaming then sure, not a big deal in the same way lots of people are not interested in watching movies from the 60's or something. However, if Dr No was no longer available legally, Bond fans would be pirating the film to watch it. Like movies, old games are a window into current games. Citizen Kane is a film that many film afficionados like to have because it shows so many techniques that became staples of modern films. Same with retro games.

They need to be available and I think with the power of hardware these days, there is no reason why all manufacturers and publishers can't make these libraries available for those that want ot experience them.

Re: Soapbox: Why Do We Want More Games When We've Already Got Too Many?

Rudy_Manchego

Afraid I don't entirely agree with this. Everyone has their own tastes, it is unfair to state that because there are a lot of games, everyone should feel like they have lots of games to play. Playing devils advocate, if you are a player who predominantly likes western AAA experiences, then no the Switch does not have a great library because most of those titles are either reduced versions of other platform games or are ports released after their other console counterparts. Sure I agree that silly ideas do the round (no games on Switch, Nintendoomed and all that) but the majority of gamers don't play Hollow Knight or Hyper Light Drifter. The majority do play COD, Fifa, western RPG's etc.

Not only that but the article is bemoaning the hype train that all gaming sites generate to get views. People want to play the latest thing because the gaming marketing and media industry TELL them they should be playing the latest thing. It's why publishers are trying so hard to keep content coming so their games continue to be talked about.

Personally, I'm not moaning as like a variety of games and the Switch is great but then I am luckly enough to have several systems to pick and choose from. I have a mate that complains he has too many games to play yet keeps buying them. Doesn't mean he is indicative of anything other than being a plonker.

Re: Ubisoft CEO Believes The Next Generation Of Consoles Will Be The Last

Rudy_Manchego

Of course this is a very possible future. The real question is, how far in the future and the form that it takes. I personally doubt there will only be one more classic generation but I can see streaming slowly coming into the mainstream more and more. Don't forget, users of this and similar sites are a small niche, comparitively the same as people that would prefer blu ray over Netflix. If you are the average gamer, who perhaps only buys a few games a year, imagine a $15 a month service that gives you access to try online games.

Re: No Plans For Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4 On Nintendo Switch, Treyarch Says

Rudy_Manchego

Most third parties are focused on bigger games, with better graphics and online features to attract players and hook them in. That means that many games can't easily be ported to the Switch without considerable effort or compromise to adapt the engine. So someone like Activision or EA won't bother with their big games because it will cost a lot of time and therefore money that could be dedicated towards milking money on the safe bets. To be honest, as well, I'd be dubious that COD would sell well on a Switch, given that you need a good player base for MP only games and the Switch, as it is now, has a smaller install base.

I think you are more likely to see games like Fortnight that are more adaptable and easier to port (and not necessarily from big publishers). Bethesda seems to be the exception, but then, as I understand it, their engine is a little easier to scale down with. I don't think that means doom and gloom for Switch though, what I hope it means is that they will go the Ubisoft route and do some original games or spin off games.

Re: Nintendo Reveals Details Of Nintendo Switch Online

Rudy_Manchego

Not bad, probably at the price point for me to subscribe though not sure how much I will use the service. To be honest, I just want cloud saves because I live in constant fear of losing my BOTW save file.

OK, constant fear may be overegging it but mild trepidation when I think about it.

Re: Feature: Remembering Toys R Us, The '90s Gamer's Paradise

Rudy_Manchego

Oh boy, so many memories. I remember stopping in once when I was saving up to buy Elite for the NES. Seeing a sale I blew my money on a cheaper copy of Solar Jet man. It was rock hard for the young me and I cried all night as I had wasted my money. Luckily my parents were able to return it and I got Elite. Important lesson learnt.

Re: Nintendo On How It Views Indie and AAA Games

Rudy_Manchego

I love indies and think that Nintendo has done a great job of attracting some really good titles to the platform.

I would, however, say that indies are predominantly the domain of a smaller subset of gamers who are actively interested in playing lots of titles or new experiences. This probably isn't true of the majority of gamers. Big AAA games are important because with that big AAA budget comes the big AAA marketing budget which lets people know that the game exists on the Switch and will be on store shelves for those people that don't go looking for the best games.

I think if Nintendo can get the balance right then they are on to a winner.
