Two years ago today, the Nintendo Switch was first released into the world. And what a ride it's been so far.
Yes, 3rd March 2017 saw Nintendo's latest console hit store shelves, a home-handheld hybrid launching alongside games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Snipperclips, Just Dance 2017, Fast RMX, and more. We'd only known about the console's true form for just over four months at this point and it was already in our hands, with Zelda's Hyrule landscape serving as a pretty stellar first outing for most.
Do you remember seeing it for the first time?
Since then, we've had Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, ARMS, Splatoon 2, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Pokémon Let's Go, Pikachu!, and Let's Go, Eevee!, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe and plenty more besides. We've only scratched the surface of some of the top first-party offerings, and we wouldn't even dream of attempting to remember every top-class indie game that's found a home on Switch. The thing has games positively bulging out of its poor, underused IR camera; a complete turnaround from the barren Wii U days.
The console's been setting sales records left, right and centre since its launch, and we can only assume that this will continue as more big releases come our way. This year looks set to bring us Yoshi's Crafted World, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Animal Crossing, Luigi's Mansion 3, Super Mario Maker 2, Pokémon Sword and Shield, and more; we hope you've managed to make a dent in that backlog.
Do you remember getting your Switch on its launch day two years ago? Perhaps you've picked one up since then instead? How time flies...

2 of the best years of my Gaming life. I remember taking the day off work waiting in all day for the delivery man to arrive. Have to admit I was slightly put off by the price at first and didn't plan on getting one (not day one at least, I intended to wait 6 Months for Mario Odyssey) but I did eventually cave in and pre order one. Best decision I ever made
Happy Birthday
What a coincidence! I've brought my Switch 2 MONTHS ago.
Anyway, Happy Anniversary!
Best 2 years in a long time.
Haven't had this much fun since the Wii era, I'm glad to have bought a switch. All my hours have been happily spent on Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Splatoon 2, Zelda Botw, and Smash Ultimate.
2 years since I've had my Switch and I'm still in love with it but would jump on a revision with the beneficial changes.
Doesn't feel like 2 years at all, but had so much fun in this time with the Switch.
Looking forward to the next 2 years
Great console! In my opinion one of the best Nintendo consoles!
Great console, great concept.
I still prefer to play AAA games on a PS4 Pro ou X-Box X on the big screen of my living room, but the portability of the Switch plus its exclusiv games, makes it an excellent gaming device.
@smashboy2000
My sentiments exactly. It compliments my Ps4 Pro very nicely and I wouldn't be without either of them
HAPPY BIRTHDAY SWITCH!
I was there launch day, did not get it then. Fortunately, I got mine one week later (remember the shortages?). I have been playing it ever since and I can say, like others here, this has been the best gaming of my life.
As a 43 year old lifelong gamer I’d sort of fell out of love with gaming until the Switch came along, I think it’s great and wouldnt be without it.
I just bought a Switch and experienced it for the first time last week, and I gotta say it was the best decision I've made in the last two years. I've got so many amazing games to catch up on, and a whole ton more to come in the next two years!
Remember trading in loads of games for it when it was still the NX and we didn't know anything about it. When I picked it up on release day my friends were asking why I wanted one as "it's just a tablet". Oh how they were wrong. The worst offender now has 4 switch's in his household (8 kids...) Loved every minute and has once again got me enjoying gaming. To celebrate I'm going to play through Zelda again. Best release game ever!!
Happy Birthday Switch!
2 years? I'm still playing BOTW since launch day and can't move on until I've finished it ALL aaaarrrggghhh!
I didn't get the Switch at launch due to money issues but when I did get it, it has mostly been a lot of fun. Switch + XB1 has been a fantastic combo and I can't wait for June when the Switch lineup returns to being very strong.
After an unremarkable first year we got a mediocre second. Let’s hope things get a bit better in 2019.
Wow 2 years already?? Where do the years go?
I didn't expect much tbh due the limited hardware specs. But it comes more appealing to me. I might buy one soon so I can play on the go Disgaea 5 or the Disgaea remaster. To me now it's a must buy hardware. Love the 3rd party support this time!
Do I remember seeing it for the first time? Yes, and seeing it for many more times since, as recently as several weeks ago. Perhaps the only electronics commercial I've ever treated like that.
Switch was the very kind of console I had wanted to see happen for years. Even NDS didn't give me QUITE the same sense of a new era dawning (although it comes an extremely close second). Fast forward two years, it's decidedly running for the title of my top favourite console - and I haven't even used most of the potential it offers yet. Wii and NDS were revolutions in gaming (Wii even literally so until the final name change), Switch is an evolution. And unlike the evolution-touted developments in graphics and specs you progressively need to be ENLIGHTENED about all the impact of, this kind truly evolves the practice and flexibility of gaming. And no one's mode preferences matter here because every such preference and choice made is the point Nintendo Switch concept pursues - adjusting to a gamer's life instead of having them adjust their lives to itself.
I’m probably one of the few that bought it at launch but didn’t buy Zelda . I haven’t regretted being a day one supporter as after a slow start of releases there is now so much stuff it’s hard to keep up ! And that’s no bad thing! This year is all about final fantasy games for me !
@Rodan2000 Same! I'm an old school gamer that got bored of PS. I bought my Switch just over a year ago. Best console I ever bought; practical as in hybrid, soul warming retro games - Outrun was an emotional nostalgic journey. It really is one of my most beloved pieces of tech.
I couldn’t afford it at launch and vowed not to buy it until Pokémon came out. I lasted 3 whole weeks.
It's been great so far, thoroughly enjoying my Switch. People moan about the so-called big "AAA" games not being on there, but I have zero interest in those games so I'm not missing out at all.
Mine has become a mini arcade with my selection of Psikyo shootemups, games like Outrun and the Capcom Beat Em Up Bundle, alongside winners like Zelda, Mario Odyssey, Splatoon 2 and Smash (the last two I've barely scratched the surface of), and I love the joy cons, the convenience of having them in each hand separately is brilliant, a new way to play indeed.
The interface is snappy, games load quickly, updates take no time at all and it behaves like a console should - plug in and play.
While the Switch isn't perfect I can definitely say it's made a lasting impact. Especially when you consider the fact that the PS4 and Xbox One had around 300 games in their first two years on the market, while the Switch already has over 1400. It's managed to acquire a much more diverse library of titles in less time than its competition which shows just how much there is for it.
Not to mention, once the PS5 and Xbox Two arrive, Switch development will become much easier since developers are used to it, and they'll have to work twice as hard for the other two, effectively pulling a 180 on the Switch's current state.
In short, once they iron out issues with the Online Service and more heavy hitters like Call of Duty and GTA arrive, this system will be almost flawless with no contest!
Six moths ago I bought the Switch and have enjoyed games like Breath of the Wild, Mario Odyssey, DKC Tropical Freeze and Smash Ultimate. Haven't had this much fun since the Nintendo Wii (I skipped the Wii U but purchased a 3DS).
What can I say? Well done Nintendo 😊 Keep giving us nice surprises like the ones you did in Smash Ultimate.
Happy b-day!
This is the console that re-launched my interest in playing on the TV again (having only done handheld since the N64 days) and it being a hybrid adds so much to the experience. I've had some truly great and memorable gaming fun since I got it in December of 2017:
TLoZ:BotW, SMO, Skyrim, Dark Souls, DKC:TF, Diablo III, XC2 and Torna, SSBU, NSMBUDeluxe, Tetris 99, Mario Kart 8, Splatoon 2, Pkmn LG, Kirby Star Allies, Ys VIII, Octopath Traveler, Tales of Vesperia, Captain Toad, DOOM, Wolfenstein 2, Civ 6, Bayonetta, Mario+ Rabbids, etc.etc.
And there's more to come!!
I <3 Switch!
The Switch is the first ever console I got in launch week in my life. I think Nintendo played a blinder in offering a device that is unique and sits neatly besides other gaming platforms. For once it is not an either or but compimentary. I have a PS4 and XB1 and I play those a lot but I always have a Switch game on the go too.
Breath of the wild started as a game I could not get into but as the console was new I persevered and finally ‘got it’ and I have since spent over 125 hours. Probably the most time I have ever spent on one game.
I waited in the rain for the midnight launch of the Switch. It's been my favourite time as a gamer because I've been with the console since day one. I'm 33 years old and never owned a console from day one due to financial difficulties in the past but I took the time to save and make some hard choices of selling other devices. I've been on a rollercoaster ride of emotions and family bereavements over the last two years but the Switch has help put a smile on my face due to the library of amazing games. By the end of this year, I know i can safely say that the Nintendo Switch will be my favourite console of all time. Happy Birthday you wonderful console, thanks for the memories so far
Wow it's been 2years and such an emotional rollercoaster!
With love for 2017
And hate for 2018
And 2019 looking iffy......it's not all praise here!
It's been an absolute wonderful 2 years so far, and here's to another several wonderful years full of Switch moments. Yoshi will be my next game for it, and there's still plenty more to come!
It’s been 2 years. Wow. It’s been good
Just to show how off the radar Nintendo was to many people at the time, I didn't know Switch was a thing until after it was released. Got mine the following Christmas and it was a very worthwhile purchase.
My highlight from the video were was that Skyrim??!! Plus trying to figure out what that Mario was!
The Switch was the first console I ever preordered and got on launch day. I wasn’t sure at first how badly I wanted one, but my wife had a hunch and convinced me to preorder it, and boy was she right! In the past two years I sold my Xbox 360 and my Xbox One, and I play games almost exclusively on my Switch now. (I occasionally fire up older Nintendo consoles.) The Switch might be my favorite console of all time. Bring on the next two years!
More like 2nd anniversary of no menu folders. Kidding aside, my Switch is alright. Still waiting to see if it can improve on its weaknesses going forward
Wow
Time flies when you are having fun I guess...
Got mine just as the NSO became chargeable. Still don't regret it though. Had to sell my PS4 in order to pick it up and sure I miss some of the PS downloads and Horizon, but for all the Switch has, it's a small sacrifice to make!
The Switch has problems, sure, but one thing I’ve noticed with the Switch is it’s personality. My main take away from video games is the story, so in theory I should be far more attracted to Sony’s offerings. However, the worlds formed in games like Breath of the Wild and Mario Odyssey (and Tennis to a lesser extent, I see you Toad Commentators) makes the Switch feel unique whereas the Wii U had none of that.
Happy birthday ! I lined up over night which is not something I’d done in a loooooong while. I took the day off work and enjoyed Zelda, Mario, RMX and Snipper Clips. Good day!
Mind, I’ve managed to chip the damn top of the plastic when it fell over on my desk! Annoying as I couldn’t have been more careful with it, barely taking it out the house.
Here’s to a happy 3rd gaming year on the Switch everyone!
Great system so far. Would like to see more absolute classics added to the lineup (including more “legacy” content), but it’s been a real turnaround for Nintendo.
Will be interesting to see future iterations of the console. Hope they are all backwards compatible with physical cards and we are able to transfer everything digitally to next incarnation.
As a 67 yo gamer have to say it’s complemented my retirement perfectly, love the fact if I go away on holiday I can carry on playing handheld.
One of the best consoles EVER! I'm so happy with it. Let's hope it lasts 6 more years, like the 3DS has done.
168 physical games.
423 digital games.
2,925(!) gameplay videos.
Happy 2nd Anniversary, Nintendo Switch!
No way! Where has the time gone!? 😳
I remember I wanted one at launch but the prices here in South Korea were insane. You could only get a Japanese import and they were around $500. I finally caved when the prices came down to $375 in May. Bought a pro-controller, Zelda, Mario Kart, and Tetris. Haven't looked back since! Such a wonderful console. Thank you Nintendo!
@nhSnork Same here, I can't count how many times u watched that video
Another WiiU LOL. Next gen PKMN is just a reused asset..... again, a copy and pasted game. There's nothing to look fwd to for this bogus of a console. 2 years had passed!! Where's the AAA???
The gamer had slumbered one hundred years. The Sheikah Slate called out in the darkness... the gamer awoke and grasped the Slate... and ventured once more into the land of gaming... It’s been a stellar two years, especially for someone like me who’s skipped the last 10 or so and can discover a decade’s worth of phenomenal games, both treasures and gems, being brought to the console. Here’s to a bright future. Happy birthday Switch and happy birthday to one of the least toxic gaming communities out there!
2 years since it launched and I have played it almost every single day. Over 60 games and hundreds of hours of enjoyment. The Switch is basically my favorite console of all time, despite having some annoying faults. The good easily outweighs the bad and I expect the daily Switch gaming to continue for a long time to come.
Lined up for sure that I want to play this year, Pokemon, Animal Crossing, Fire Emblem, like 4 different Final Fantasy, Yoshi, and I am sure there will be more. My backlog is growing almost every week.
This also means that if you bought a switch with an extended warranty from GameStop/EB Games, BestBuy or any of the other similar companies you are SOL if something happens to your switch going forward!
@Evilworm Where are the AAA games? On other consoles, you ham sandwich. If you want a hundred and sixty “different” games where you go around shooting things, you know where to find them. I, and I think most of us here, would trade a thousand Overwatches for one Breath of the Wild, one Mario Odyssey, one Smash Bros. Ultimate... you get the idea. Join the party!
I woke my 5 & 7 year old kids up at 11:20pm so that they could go to the midnight launch with me. We had a blast. I took the next day off work and we played Zelda, Bomberman & Snipper Clips!
Turns out the real value for me has been taking it on work trips and playing on the plane & in the hotel
I know that some people were disappointed in the Switch being a hybrid, but for me, the Switch is a perfect concept for my busy lifestyle. They cleverly took the best thing about the Wii U, off tv play, and made it the main hook of the console. Even if my wife is playing the PS4, I can still keep playing. It’s true that could be done with the 3DS, or even the prior handhelds, but we’ve never had an HD handheld before.
I really love this console, and I’m looking forward to the games coming in the summer. Bring on UA3! My buddy and I can’t wait to play a franchise we played over a decade ago in college.
@Evilworm There's a simple solution to your problem. Really simple solution. Sell it and move on. No more tears. Done.
@WiltonRoots nailed it. I totally agree.
The versatility of the Switch, alongside the great software library, has made the first two years of this consoles life a joy. I can’t imagine going back to being tethered to a tv screen now.
I love that since I often need to kill time for several hours away from home I can play the same games I would be playing at home.
Still got my ticket for the Switch in the original packaging, proof that I woke up crazy early that third of March to stand outside my local store in the cold to get one. I remember the store manager standing outside with us, telling us he would wait it out like a normal customer rather than flex on us and get it ahead of time.
It has been a great system to own and play.
On launch day I got botw for my wiiu and caved and bought a switch when splatoon 2 came out along with mk8dx. After the release of the botw dlc bought it again for switch and put over 200 hrs on it. Best decision ever made. I loved my wiiu but the switch is just so much better. Shame theres still no netflix or other apps since its a tablet
@leo13 That's going to be a great memory for your kids for the rest of their lives. Nicely done.
How time flies.
I only preordered one last minute as I wasn’t sure after the Wii U debacle. Was able to get some corporate discount on everything so went for it.
Ironically, since then it’s been my most used machine ahead of my PS4 Pro and XB1X.
Never before has a gaming system fit into an adult lifestyle so perfectly. It’s so undemanding and so eager to be used.
Still on the fence. I have a preposterous backlog across three generations, and adding a new console isn't going to help. And the most enticing games I already have on the Wii U. But high quality mobile play is a serious tease, and I have a Visa gift card collecting dust...
Oh, the humanity.
@Ichiyama thanks! That's what I was going for. It's not something I ever got to do.
Happy Birthday! I got my Switch in the launch week and it's been great to be there at the beginning. By the end of this year there will be a very healthy library of First Party Titles never mind all the rest. That's amazing for such a short timescale.
But we are a hungry bunch and we still need Pikmin, Kid Icarus, F-Zero, Odyssey 2 or Galaxy 3, lots of ports and remasters – like MP Trilogy, Galaxy 1&2 and SM3DW. Just keep em coming Nintendo. Thanks
I remember the excitement I felt watching that initial reveal trailer online for the first time. All I could think of was "No way...that can't be what it really is...how it really works!", because it was like a dream console idea for someone who had been a gamer for decades. Wasn't able to get a pre-order for the system in, and when I went in launch week to pick one up...they were gone everywhere. I was, however, able to grab a "pre-order" for one of the bundles that my local Gamestop was setting up for their next shipment of Switch units. It came with Zelda (which I had already picked up for my Wii U as well) and Just Dance. Since it came in the Switch has been my favorite console ever. The variety of game selection is astounding, considering its just been only 2 years. From big, breathtaking AAA games like BotW and Mario, Doom and Diablo...to small indie gems like Oxenfree and Rocket League or Snake Pass and so many others...the game library of the Switch just keeps getting better and better. The system itself fits perfectly into my adult gaming lifestyle now. It goes with me to work every day, whether I play it on my lunch break or not...its there with me in case I do want to. I play on the TV through the dock just as much as I do in handheld. I've had to buy 2 other systems for my daughters, and we all play together and separately on such a variety of games. This new year just looks to expand on our ever growing collection of games over all 3 systems.
Here's to Nintendo and Switch...here's to a wonderful last 2 years of gaming excitement at home AND on the go...and here's to many more years to come with this amazing little hybrid console!
...It's already been two years? I still recall how excited I was to watch the video linked in the article. How time flies! I'm still Switchless but do intend to grab one within the next few months.
Because of college and graduate school, I fell out of gaming. 1 year into my (then) new job, I was looking to get back into playing video games so, having loved Nintendo as a kid in addition to those brilliant ads for the Nintendo Switch that seemed to fit my new lifestyle (and it did, still does to this day), I knew I had to purchase the system on Day 1. Never looked back since. I look forward to its even brighter future.
Best console I've ever owned hands down. It has it's flaws at times but overall it's the most amazing console to date. It really re-sparked my love for Nintendo that was gone since the gamecube/wii days. Had it preorederd since January of 17 and I remember checking my order countless times to make sure it wasn't canceled or some glitch happened. Then on arrival day i was completely blown away. I treat my switch like a baby and thankfully I haven't had many issues with it. Other than the left joy con connectivity issue us early adopters remember 😉. Happy birthday switch, Thank you for a fantastic 2 years of gaming!
Kind of have to say the Switch had a disappointing 2 years in terms of 1st party support. Sure there were some good games (Smash, Mario, Sushi Striker, Splatoon), but we also had a lot of crap (1 2 Switch, ARMS, Mario Tennis, Kirby). A bunch of Wii U ports I already owned. However 3rd party support is great. Mario Rabbids Kindom Battle + DLC is probabbly the best game on the system. Things are looking better now with Yoshi and Mario Maker 2 as well as future platinum projects. 2019 is looking great for Switch.
Where are the trolls and naysayers that kept talking NintenDoomed but it has far outpaced even ps4. Buyers want more and it keeps one going.
Let's give Nintendo a round of applause. Hip hip hooray....
@waluigifan1 wow the trolls can't stand the Fact outsold and outpaced ps4.
The first console other than the Wii that I got on launch day.
Two years ago today, I bought BOTW for Wii U.
No regrets!
I am enjoying the Switch, but I also really enjoyed the Wii U. Mario Maker is my top Wii U game, but I also enjoyed MK8, Nintendo Land, DKC Tropical Freeze, Pikmin 3, Wind Waker HD, Twilight Princess HD, Earthbound, Metroid Prime Trilogy, etc.
@SwitchForce I have an Xbox One and Switch. I despise the PS4. Probably the worst console I've bought. My Switch comment was probably a C. Completely average with 2019 more than likely bringing up to a C+ or B-.
The same day as my country liberation day! I love it!
and Nintendo Switch is still the same as it was at the beginning, isnt it sad?
@waluigifan1 The Switch has been successful in spite of several flaws. Apparently many people are willing to forgive the faults for all the things it does get right.
Happy Anniversary to what I consider to be the finest product Nintendo has ever produced. With four or five more years of games added to its library I might consider the Switch an all-time great platform.
Happy 2nd Anniversary, Nintendo Switch! I still remember getting mine at Best Buy while it was finally in stock (along with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe), and later on I played some fantastic games like Super Mario Odyssey and Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Love how it's a home console/handheld hybrid, as well. Here's to more years of awesome Switch games!!!
Just got my friend to buy one today
@ImagineerNik Let us know what they think of it!
i'm happy to see the switch doing so well! my most anticipated Switch Game "Animal Crossing" awaits.
other excited games to look forward as well!
@Grumblevolcano not to be contentious, but having no notable releases for a few months (in your opinion) doesn't suddenly make the Switch lineup worse.
Happy Birthday, Nintendo Switch !
I have bought World of Final Fantasy MAXIMA in physical Asia version just now to celebrate 2nd Anniversary of Nintendo Switch.
@Evilworm
"Where's the AAA???"
Who the HECK need AAA 3rd party games on Switch ?!
Switch already have some Killer 1st party games this year.
Btw, Pokemon Sword / Shield, Luigi Mansion 3, Animal Crossing Switch, Super Mario Maker 2 are already Killer AAA games.
Oh, don't forget FF X/X-2 HD, FF XII the Zodiac Age, FF IX HD. Old games but still kicking butt like AAA games.
And you do realize the specs of Nintendo Switch machine and by keep asking for AAA 3rd party games like on PC was completely NONSENSE.
You want AAA ?
I give you AAA.
It’ll be interesting to see where the Switch goes from here. I imagine that there will be at least a Mario Maker or Fire Emblem Direct before E3 if not a full on direct before E3.
@SwitchForce
"Where are the trolls and naysayers that kept talking NintenDoomed but it has far outpaced even ps4."
Did you mean Cobalt & Sliggy ? 😆
I bought mine exactly 2 months after release and it was my first big purchase after getting my job. It was with me for my first flight and my first trip to Disney World. I love my Switch.
I think @Evilworm need a reality check. Happy 2nd Anniversary Switch. Switch is the first time, I couldn't get on launch day because it sold out. I was only able to get breath of the wild, and the pro controller. it took me five months to get the switch, but it was well worth it.
I've had a great time with my Switch, got it at launch, just before my son was born (Mar10 is his birthday, which is a great coincidence).
I tried to hold off until Mario Kart came out but about 3 weeks after launch I found a Switch when they were like gold dust.
I’ve played it almost every day ever since. It came at a perfect time in my life as with 2 very young kids I never get the TV to myself.
Got my Switch at a midnight launch opening at my local game store,never would have imagined how well the console has sold though,I was at the same store at the the same time to buy my Wii U.
Good console but after the two year point I would expect them to finally get themes and folders. The PS4 and 3DS managed to do it by about this point so why can't the Switch?
@JayJ
Remember if 3DS was used to be have NO themes and Folder at first launch.
@Anti-Matter "Did you mean Cobalt & Sliggy ? 😆'
No there are new ones replacing them everyday that is whom the message was for.
Here's to another eight great years of the Nintendo Switch, am I right?
Happy 2nd Anniversary to both the Switch and Breath of the Wild!
My Grandma brought me this system for Christmas last year, and I got SSBU and Super Mario Odyssey on the same day. Later on, I brought BotW, and I'm fine with playing these three beauties while I wait patiently for the Metroid Prime Trilogy to be ported onto the system (I'm confident it'll happen at some point).
Basically same as the WiiU. A few good games from Nintendo you wait for over 2 or 3 months for. A bunch of random stuff that can't compete with what is available elsewhere - and finally games that been available for years that you didn't need a new $300 console to play
Hopefully 2019 is different.
But seeing how the only reason Switch is even getting Daemon and Astral Chains, is because Nintendo is paying for them to be made, does not inspire confidence.
This year is already shaping up to be Nintendo's absolute best. Starting in June, Switch is going to absolutely dominate. As a lifelong Nintendo fan, it's good to see the Big N back on top again.
@Anti-Matter Two years later is pretty well beyond the "first launch" date.
Two years since I booted up BOTW for the first time, and I've never been happier with a console. Play almost every day, and my kids play on it several times a week. I have 31 games physical and another 20-something digital, which is an all-time record for me. I could easily name another 20 games out now that I'd love to have. And my backlog keeps growing.
Aside from having to replace my Joy-Con once after the left stick started drifting, I've never had anything but the tiniest glitches on the Switch.
It's one of my favorite gadgets of all time. Happy Birthday, Switch!
I remember when the system came out and so many people were saying it was going to fail and be the biggest disaster in the history of gaming... yet here we are.
As a multi console owner I have lost all interest in playing video games on other consoles. There’s a few games that come out that I absolutely must play (Monster Hunter) but for the most part if it’s not on Switch I just don’t care. I can do without. Or I can wait for a Swhich version. And I’m sure there’s some great games I won’t play as a result. But if I can’t enjoy those great games on a system designed to give me freedom, then I don’t really feel like I’m missing out on much. Not to mention, there’s so many great games releasing on Switch this year, it takes all of my free time and I can’t even keep up with those.
@Agramonte
And yet, unlike Wii U, it is the most popular console on the market and has consistently broken records. So it’s gotta be doing something different and better. Maybe it’s because all those “random games” are actually really good, and as the portable market is running parallel to the console market, people see those “random games” as the best video games released on a portable in the history of mankind. Look how well 3DS did, and it never got mainline Final Fantasy games, or DOOM and Wolfenstein, or Civilization VI, or Skyrim, or YS VIII, or Dragons Dogma, or Okami, or Trials games and South Park games, or Assassins Creed games, or Diablo or Dark Souls or Crash, no Valkyria Chronicles or Dragonball Fighter Z, or the PS4 version of Dragon Quest, etc etc. Neither was it HD or hybrid or with detachable controllers and a kickstand.
You say it can’t compete but it’s literally doing exactly that. It’s telling just how many people would rather have “random games” on a hybrid than brand new games on a ball and chain console (because being utterly brand new doesn’t actually matter except to the diehard minority that does nothing but play video games day and night and feverishly waits for the next new thing- to the normal masses people haven’t played most of those games they are brand new, and on a system that fits their lifestyle). Or at the very least people want it in addition to a TV bound console. In which case you’re right, it’s not competing for those individuals. But it doesn’t need to when the outcome is that those people want one regardless.
At the end of the day, I don’t think they care if you only play a couple Nintendo games here and there throughout the year (which is still a crap ton of games- even half a dozen a year for 6 years is 35+ top-shelf exclusive games you’ll get from Switch this generation, and that’s not even touching a single multiplat), or if it’s your main console you never let out of your sight. You still bought one, and you are infatuated with it enough to come on a fan site and talk about it every single day.
Honestly crazy that it's been 2 years already.
Fantastic system. It launched with BotW, which has now become my favorite game of all-time. For me, the Switch has quickly amassed a large library between 1st, 3rd party and indies to the point where I'll never come close to catching up with. Having hybrid versions of games is so cool too. I've owned every Nintendo platform since the SNES, and I'm already feeling that the Switch can easily become the best Nintendo platform when all is said and done.
I just wish the release schedule were more consistent. I have to wonder if Yoshi got pushed back into 2019 simply because they would have nothing for the first six months of the year without it.
@JaxonH And all those other systems have also broken records and sold tons of games and hardware. So, yes they have something people want. It is not about the same games, it is about the same support. Yes. Look at the 3DS. It had Tons of new compelling software all the time, it didn't matter what Nintendo was doing. They were not the same games as on other platforms. But they were compelling. If not cared to play AC3 at home in the last 5 years, I am not going to care to play on the GO in 2019. I do care about Persona Q2 on my 3DS (just like I cared about P5 on PS4)
You still bought one, and you are infatuated with it enough to come on a fan site and talk about it every single day
YES! that is all true!... why I spend more time here than pushsquare or GURU3D... because always trying to find out if any new news on new software - so I can use that "hardware".
I want to use my 1080Ti, PS4, and Switch all the time.
I've loved the console since the reveal trailer.
@Arcamenel it'd still be 2 more years before I'd be willing to buy a revised edition
I didn't buy a Switch at launch as there wasn't enough games (got BOTW on the Wii U) but I picked it up 6 months later for Mario Odyssey. Now I use my Xbox One X for 4K movies and the big 3rd party releases; while the Switch provides me awesome gaming on the go and lots of family fun Its a great combination.
The Switch has been a good purchase and Ive bought more games for it in a year and a half than I have in 4 years on the PS4/XBO.
With games like Bayonetta 3 and Metroid Prime 4 ahead the next couple of years should be just as good.
I'm an Xbox 1S gamer and I was ~planning~ to get an Xbox 1X or possibly even a PS4 Pro. But a PS4 owning multiple VR device owning and lifelong Nintendo fan FB friend persuaded me to get a Switch. And on 16 November last year I got a Let's Go Switch bundle direct from Nintendo UK (because sweet 2yr guarantee at Nintendo) with the launch (sneaky I know!) of Let's Go P/E. If you don't have a Switch and you like a special edition I recommend getting a special edition console whenever you can because it's a heart warming thing and it makes remembering the exact date you got it easy haha! It's been only 3.5 months I've had it? It feels like 2 years haha! Definitely one of the best decisions I've ever made. So glad I didn't go for 1X/PS4 because the Switch is such a sociable console even if you have noone to play with - you can fairly easily go sit around people while you play! And that is a WONDERFUL wonderful experience!
Switch is really life enhancing in ways no other console is.
Happy Second Birthday Nintendo Switch! Many happy returns!
I bet that no one cares but I thought I would share the fact it is also my brother's birthday and the anniversary of the HxH series.
Good things seem to happen a bit more on his birthday than mine considering the fact well liked personalities and evil leaders had died and been born on my birthday.
I was going to play it today on it’s birthday. Apparently if you don’t turn it on for over a year, it won’t turn on at all.
Anybody else have trouble turning it on after a long period of time ?
@Agramonte
Not all other systems have broken records. In fact most haven’t, aside from PS4, which if it wasn’t selling, it would mean people don’t want to play on home consoles anymore, and that would be some serious breaking news. But Switch is selling and breaking records despite being a different type of product that is incapable of getting all those same games. You made a comparison to Wii U, but it’s nothing like Wii U, and the proof is in the pudding. Nobody wanted Wii U. Everybody wants Switch. So there’s enough of a difference there to make the difference between utter and total failure, and utter and total success. How much you personally use it just comes down to the fact everybody is different and has different preferences. You only use it for an exclusive every two months, while other people use it every single day and only use their PS4 for an exclusive once or twice a year. That’s just different people being different. The issue I was responding to, was the comparison to Wii U.
Switch is much more akin to 3DS, only with tons of third-party multiplats stacked on top of it, all in HD, and all able to be played as console games. 3DS got lots of unique software, but so has Switch, and everything on Switch seems better than 3DS (Monster Hunter Gen Ult in HD on TV and full button HD handheld vs MHGen on 3DS in 240p and no 2nd analog, or Dragon Quest XI PS4 Version + 16 bit mode/orchestral soundtrack vs 3DS chibi models, Fire Emblem Three Houses looks miles beyond Awakening or Fates, Persona 5 will likely come to Switch and be far better than Q2, Yokai Watch 4 looks insane vs the 3DS entries, Octopath Traveler better than Bravely Default, and itll probably get Bravely Collection on top of it, Bayonetta 3 on top of Bayo1/2, Astral Chain, as opposed to... nothing like that on 3DS, Mario Maker 2 will slopes and 3D World and online, vs Mario Maker on 3DS local only, etc etc etc). Plus things are just heating up this year. Switch has only had 24 months in the market. Compare how many great exclusive games 3DS had in 2 years vs Switch, or Wii U vs Switch.
The biggest appeal of Switch for most, besides the hybrid functionality and exclusives (which has been averaging 1 per month since launch day- 11 in 2017, 11 in 2018, 11 in 2019 we know about, and that’s just first party), is the collection of timeless classics and great games finally being given life on a portable system, or for portable exclusives, a console system. You look at how popular games like Final Fantasy X and Dragon Quest Builders was on Vita... there’s a reason for that. Because some people care about portable gaming like you care about console gaming. It’s not all about just playing brand new games that have never released- it’s about playing console games that are brand new to portable systems and handheld games new to a console system, games brand new to the Nintendo audience and audience of lapsed gamers, and amassing a collection of all the best games on a system that you can take with you when you’re on vacation, or at a friends house, or whatever. Point being, don’t marginalize the Switch. A lot of people care about those “random games” you imply no one cares about, specifically because they’re on Switch and offer freedom to enjoy them anywhere. I repurchased a lot of games for 3DS/Vita I already owned, because I wanted a handheld version. But switch versions of games are so much better. HD handheld, tabletop with removable controllers, and it doesn’t come at the expense of playing on console.
@IronMan30 That's not what I meant, was meaning about how Switch 2019 isn't particularly strong until June.
The console is not lacking games. It lacking of 'Quality' games!!. You people accept almost everything from Nintendo, when the quality is obviously compromised. 2 years had passed and it still about Botw / Oddyssey......while new releases constantly fade to obscurity.
Pokemon Swordnshield is a game with assets reused from SunnMoon!!!! Isit acceptable in 2019??? Did Sony / MS do this?? RE2 was remade from the ground up because gaming must change with time, not just a simply reskin of HD graphics upon it.Old Powerful IPs like Kirby / Yoshi / Mario all being dumbed down, contents gutted and you all praise Nintendo for that??.
Why does everyone forget about 1-2-Switch? It was also available on launch day, and sold over 2 million units worldwide so far, doing better than ARMS even!
Also, people seem to forget that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is not a Nintendo Switch exclusive, as it was simultaneously released for the Wii U.
Happy Birthday to an absolutely amazing console!
Happy birthday Nintendo Switch!! I am still playing Breath of the Wild and loving every minute of it. The Tarrey Town theme has to be my favorite. I love how it incorporates four themes into one. 44 years old and gaming like I was a teenager!
Had mine for nearly a year, really rate it. Botw is a masterpiece and enjoy it as I get to game on second screen when the mrs is watching some God awful tv!!
@Evilworm I think it’s just aimed at a different audience. Unfortunately for me, Nintendo has chosen to focus on franchises I don’t care about. I’ve been waiting for Metroid for many years, but it’s not a top focus for Nintendo. It’s been 5 years since we’ve seen Mario Kart. 5 years since a Donkey Kong (I’d rather see a 3D Kong this time). I’d love a Diddy Kong racing game. Wave Race. Kid Icarus. Start a new franchise adventure game.
But Nintendo’s audience lines up for straight ports and are willing to pay full price. Nintendo innovation has been severely lacking on Switch. I’m hoping Luigi’s Mansion takes that series to the next level or this year for Switch will be a bust for me.
@Elvie I was going to reply to your comment, but thought it would create some associative-bad-luck, so I decided not...
Oh, crap.
Best Nintendo system ever! As someone that boycotted the Wii and WU, the Switch has been a brilliant return to form. To play it handheld is pure genius because with my other consoles it's a bit of a drag to take control of the TV. Now I can flip out the Switch any time and I've I'm playing games more often now and it's rediscovered my enthusiasm for games.
PS: I bought mine day one. It wasn't the plan, as I weren't interested in the early games. Then I read the reviews of Zelda BOTW, saw a local chain had a good day 1 launch deal of the system for $20 off retail if you bought Zelda, which was already $10 lower than anywhere else, and the pro controller was $15 off. So I rode my bike then and bought it. First thing I did was download Fast RMX and play that for most of the day. Then checked out Zelda. Since then I've only played it one more time for a total of about 2 hours. I know I'm bad!
2 years in, I'd love to hear the most surprisingly enjoyable game for everyone for me it would be
NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 or Ys VIII
I got mine by chance as I had just landed in japan and thought I'd take a chance to see if I could get one on launch day. When I got to the store and saw the huge line I thought there was no chance I'd walk out with a shiny new switch. Instead I was approached by a store employee that said, if you want a switch we only have a few of the grey joy con consoles left. I walked out with a switch and no games as they were all sold out. I went to my hotel room and downloaded botw.
2 years flew by.. I remember the excitement of getting it with Zelda . That was something I’ll never forget. 2017 was amazing, 2018 no so much, and this year off to a slow start as well.
@Evilworm
I 100% agree with you
@ilikeike
“Starting in June” why Nintendo take the first 5 months off just like last year..
@Mgene15 It seems Nintendo's been hit with delays pretty hard this year. We already know Fire Emblem was meant for Spring, and it wouldn't surprise me if Mario Maker 2 was initially targeted for Spring as well in order to have a fairly packed season. However, at least it seems that Nintendo won't need to rely exclusively on 1 or 2 big new games this year, unlike 2018.
Happy B Day Switch
What a good time to be a gamer with the Nintendo Switch! Here is to another good FULLY STACKED year of games for the system!
@Elvie: Happy birthday to your brother!
@Everyone_Else: 2yrs old today. Like its predecessor, I got it finally, just a little short of 2yrs. This Christmas I got one. I enjoy mine. I still play my Nes, WU, GBC, & occasionally my phone. Happy birthday to the NX, which is now the NS!
I didn't pick up a Switch at launch, but I bought BoTW for Wii U, and sold it two weeks later, severely disappointed.
I honestly think in years to come this will be looked back as fondly as the SNES and mega drive. Here’s to many more years of great games, cheers! 👍
I recently got an xbone, mostly to check out rare replay. There are also other good games. But damn, that instant sleep/wake up function on the switch is a killer feature for people with busy lifes! I now find myself debating wether I am going to bother waiting for the console to boot and then the game to load in order to play (just like with wii u). Switch is amazing!
So I got my switch on launch day with BOTW from work having ogled at it when the first batch came in store.
This is hands down the best console I have ever owned. I play handheld 99% of the time. I also brought my brother and his wife one as I was so blown away by it.
The switch has turned into the RPG machine of my dreams. Too much to play and that was before the Final fantasy rereleases.
Spent yesterday getting back into FFIX after a 15 year hiatus.
@Evilworm
"Pokemon Swordnshield is a game with assets reused from SunnMoon!!!! Isit acceptable in 2019???"
"Old Powerful IPs like Kirby / Yoshi / Mario all being dumbed down, contents gutted and you all praise Nintendo for that??"
YES !!! and So What ?!
2 long amazing years! Cheers to 2 more!
@WOLF13
If they aren’t putting out the games you like that’s fine. Don’t extrapolate that into being an issue with “Nintendo’s audience”. A lot of people with different taste to you are clearly very happy with the Switch.
@Evilworm
Spare us the temper tantrums and desperate attention seeking. Seen it all before.
@Agramonte
Stop right there. Apart from being made by Nintendo, it’s nothing like the Wii U. It’s popular and has software.
Happy birthday Switch!!
Lol fantastic reveal...
@Evilworm you are just a hater. Do you really own a switch? It doesn't seem so.
Wasn't able to get mine at launch. I missed pre-orders and actually couldn't find one until about July 2017.
I had my Breath of The Wild limited edition sitting on my shelf for months... teasing me. At least in that time I was able to beat NieR: Automata(my personal game of the year for 2017) and Persona 5.
Finally getting the Switch and booting up BoTW for the first time was cathartic.
Since then I've mostly been just playing games on Switch, it's one of my all time favorite systems at this point.
@JaxonH sure they are - everything form PS4, Xbox to PC. From about to break the Wii sales record to generating revenue to giving record sales to Japanese publishers on Steam. on PC we do not even have the concept of 1st party games. A relic of the past when hardware had mascots like sports teams (it is hardware!).
Yes The VITA is the prime example. It didn't matter it had rehashed X/X2, FF7, Grandia, or a Mediocre Assassin Creed Liberation. Or Guacamole, Super Meatboy, Axiom verge, PEZ, Spelunky, Shovel Knigth, DArkets Dungeon, Limbo, Bastion and countless other Niche indies and mobile ports. Time and time again the narrative was how it was not worth getting - the support was not there.
Nintendo is what is holding up the Switch not any of this other nonsense. Why their Evergreen are still the go to games when people buy one today. Why SMASH saved Christmas - The USA Install base didn't matter, neither did "UK bias"... It sold millions! . Yes - Chains, Dragon Quest, Yokai Watch, Bayo3 are what will make the Switch shine.
But those are all still somewhere down the line... There has been nothing at that level now. We had Smash in Dec 7 and Yoshi end of March. And Just like before, A sea of ports and excuses in between. This is the best Chance Nintendo has had in years - it is year 3, time to take advantage!
@electrolite77 My iPhone is "popular and has software". And it is also just like the WiiU. 1 or 2 publishers release something worth playing every other few months. One is not indicative of the other.
@Agramonte
Xbox has broken no records. It's a by the numbers mediocre performer. PC isnt breaking anything. It's not even part of the console market, and software sales are not the same thing as hardware anyways.
Vita's problem is Final Fantasy X and Assassins Creed Liberation were the highlight of the entire system library even after 8 years on the market. Whereas on Switch, they're just yet another great game in a massive ocean of great games, with more great exclusives in 2 years than good Vita games period.
That's the difference. On top of which, most of Switch's ported games are actual console games. It's not just getting a pared back handheld Assassins Creed, it's getting a mainline entry. It's not just getting handheld version of Uncharted and then calling it a day for 1st party, it's getting the highest console quality exclusives, and they're coming nonstop at an average rate of 1/mo. That's the difference.
Of course Nintendo is holding up the system. Devs aren't going to suddenly cancel development of all new games and give the 200 million poqer console and PC gamers a middle finger so all their brand new releases can be Switch games. Of course Nintendo games are the main appeal. HOWEVER. Those 3rd party console games being ported have sold plenty of Switches.
I know 8 people at my work who have a Switch. One bought for Skyrim, his fave game, to have hybrid. Another 2 bought for Diablo 3. Another bought for Dark Souls. So dont tell me those games dont matter. They might not matter as much on a home console, but on a hybrid they matter a lot. If Vita got console ports of Skyrim and Dark Souls and Diablo 3 and DOOM, etc etc, and wasn't hampered by incomplete button set and high memory card prices, and actually had a knockout lineup of exclusives to go alongside them, it might have done as well as Switch.
And fyi, it's ok to not have a Smash bros level game every single month. Games like that release 2-3x a year. The rest is filled out with smaller titles selling 1-2m, but GOOD ones. I'm more excited for Final Fantasy X, XII, Dragons Dogma, etc than anything on other systems right now. I care more about Trials Rising on Switch than I ever cared about Smash Bros. It's not all about console war bragging rights. It's about actual gamers playing actually great games, of which there are plenty (and clearly the lineup is just fine for most given people continue to buy the system in droves).
Idk about any "excuses". I havent seen one excuse given, nor do I see anything that needs excusing. We're getting like a dozen new 1st party games this year, on top of a range of the most choice 3rd party games that are a fit for a system of such power. What more do you want. Better pacing for 1st party? Sure. But at the end of the day it all averages out. Less now = more a few months from now.
@JaxonH Xbox made 2.7 billion in revenue in a quarter. And that “mediocre performer” gets more support than the Switch. PC is the most popular gaming platform in the USA – and again nobody cares they not getting 1st party from anyone. Not from SONY, Not Nintendo. People pay 3X the price of a Switch/PS4 to play 3rd party games.
Final fantasy X and Liberation were not a “highlights”. X was a PS2 port, that had a better port on PS3 and Liberation was another mediocre AC failure in a long line of “Meh” AC (that includes AC3)
They were “Actual console games” ages ago!. Every best rated, best selling NEW game in 2019 has been elsewhere. Even Tetris 99 is a noteworthy Switch release now. Or the best one – someone here actually mentioned Daemon DEMO as a new release example to me.
None of the 3rd party rehash been multi-million sellers on Switch –Zero. Only Nintendo sells old games at big numbers. Top 3rd party in japan in 2018 was budget 3,200 yen MineCraft. Every territory, it is all Nintendo.
I know an entire online department (NY/UK) who have zero to do every other night as we update the servers at midnight. So we play on handhelds – Last time we all saw BlackKKlansman off a laptop. Nobody had their Switch with them.
Good for you - but I am not daydreaming about another port of FFX that is not even coming out until April 16th. If I did not care to play it in the last 10 years on PS3, PS4 and VITA… being now on Switch will not change that.
I want them to start actually getting regular top tier support for the only handheld in town - like every successful platform gets at this point.
@Agramonte
We're not talking about support, we're talking about breaking records for hardware. Dont strawman. Xbox get support because it has the power to run the games and similar architecture which makes it easy to port, and has absolutely nothing to do with what I said.
And Liberation and FFX absolutely were highlights. Absolutely highlights. Best games on the system in 8 years, alongside Persona 4 Golden, Uncharted Abyss, Dragonquest Builders and World of Final Fantasy. I owned the system from day one, and have 50+ games. That was the best it had to offer after the better part of a decade on the market. And that's part of why it failed.
I dont care if someone mentioned DXM demo as a new release. That's irrelevant to me. Switch is getting nearly a dozen new exclusive games every year, on top of creme de la creme 3rd party games that are a fit for the system. Nobody cared Final Fantasy X and Persona 4 were PS2 ports on Vita. They were the best games on the system. And the majority doesnt care if Switch is getting PS3 games, Wii U games, or PS4 multiplats. Good games are good games, and 99% have never been on handheld (100% never been hybrid).
And bullcrap, Skyrim, Diablo 3, DOOM, all of these are over a million. Skyrim over 2m I believe, judging against Xenoblade 2 performance which it has exceeded, and I believe Monster Hunter as well, maybe FIFA too. Even Disgaea 5 and Ultra Street Fighter 2 and DB Xenoverse 2 hit 500k. Just because they dont announce sales doesnt mean it never happened. Besides which, 7th gen games on the system have done just as well if not better than current gen games on the system, which completely destroys any argument that nobody wants the games. People want them every bit as much as new games, if not moreso. On top of which most of those games did no better on PS4/X1. I think Dark Souls was best selling on Switch, I’m pretty sure Diablo 3 has at least hit in the ballpark of the PS4 port, it’s amazing Skyrim did as well as it has given how long ago the game released and how many other systems it’s been on. That’s a clear example of a game exceeding expectations. As many games have. Yet new games have done no better. DOOM couldn’t outsell Skyrim. DB Fighter Z couldn’t outsell Xenoverse 2. Trials Rising won’t outsell Crash Trilogy. Older ports do just as well as newer games.
And whether your buddies use Switch doesnt mean that's indicative of anything. Plenty people say that, yet plenty also have half a dozen friends who do use Switch everywhere they go.
And could support be better? Always. But it's pretty dang good. This is top tier support for a handheld. Compare to Vita, its night and day. Compare to 3DS. Its night and day. You weren't getting Civilization VI on 3DS or Vita. Just knockoff Revolution spinoffs. You weren't getting Final Fantasy XII on 3DS or Vita. Just Explorers spinoffs. You weren't getting Dark Souls or Diablo 3 or DOOM on 3DS or Vita. So ya, its the most top tier I've ever seen on a handheld. We’re getting actual console quality console games, 7th and 8th gen, versus watered down handheld spinoffs. I’ll take Dragons Dogma over Soul Sacrifice any day of the week. I’ll take
If you mean top tier as in all the same games PS4 gets, you've got ridiculous expectations for a tablet. No handheld has ever gotten all the same games as main home consoles. The fact Switch is getting any at all is a miraculous step forward for portable gaming (Trials Rising, first ever on a handheld, Dragonball Fighter Z, same, DOOM and Doom Eternal, same, Wolf 2 and Youngblood, same, Pillars of Eternity 1 and 2, Civ VI, Mortal Kombat 11, Sonic Racing, South Park, Valkyria Chronicles 4, actual good version of YS VIII, etc).
I can always get beyond a desire for more support, totally (though one thing to keep in mind is that we are only two years in- what did 3DS and Vita look like after just 24 months? Not even close to Switch) but to pretend all these excellent games "dont count" because they dont fall into the narrow category of games you personally care about is negligent. This is a different market. To pretend it's not mega news to see Final Fantasy X or XII not only on a hybrid device for the first time ever, but on a Nintendo console at that, is negligent. If you only care about utterly brand new games, then go play your PC and PS4 and drop in once in a while for the occasional Switch exclusive. Doubtful you'd even buy those games on Switch anyways though. Its always the same "its 30fps and has worse alpha particles, I'll buy on PS4 instead" song and dance.
@JaxonH FFX was not a highlight - you are dreaming. And the AC Liberation got panned - The HD remastered version was even less cared for. The AC: Liberation VITA bundle didn't do anything for the VITA. And this turn AC3/Liberation is being given away as part of a $29 Season Pass. better just playing a "GOOD" AC at home and listening to Spotify on the GO.
You just pulled those numbers out of thin air. "Exceeded expectations" that is all you get for these games. You take Nintendo out of the top list in every country and the Switch is nowhere. Ubisoft quarterly had Switch sales in single digits again. Dark Souls sold 14K in japan opening week.
You were the one who mentioned what your buddies at work bought as "indicative" of what games people want in the first place!
Nobody is asking for the same games as PS4. Just not the same list as PS3. Fine, where is DOOm eternal? where is YoungBlood?, where is Pillars 2?... I have a pre-order since September 2018
if even half those games were out in the first 4 months of 2019 (or even 6 months) we would not be having this conversation.
It is a hybrid, a home console or a Handheld... that is just hardware to me!. Software is what makes me play at my desk, a couch or a train. Yes, I play new games. Why I have played AC7, KH3, Metro Exodus... and I get DMC5 and Dirt 2.0 tomorrow and have Sekiro to look forward at the end of the month (what do I care about darksouls when FromSoftware has a new game in 3 weeks that looks amazing!). That is what I want on Switch. And no - not the same list - but big exciting games.
Release List is like a midlife crisis of years past - I have Fire Emblem on July 26th and Astral Chains in August 30th. 2 games in 8 months!
https://www.metacritic.com/browse/games/release-date/coming-soon/switch/date
@Agramonte
Dude, those were among best games on the system. What else was there? God Eater? Muramasa? Ninja Gaiden? No. And AC Liberation was not “panned”, sitting at 70% on Metacritic which is, last I checked, a pretty good score. Games like Final Fantasy X and Persona 4 came to the system and it was earth shattering news. Borderlands 2 with the most God awful frame rate and texture pop-in, with the most offensive control scheme I’ve ever experienced... earth shattering. Yet games like that release on Switch and it’s just another drop in the bucket. Oh, it’s exciting for sure, but it’s nowhere near being highlights of the system.
The reason Ubisoft had Switch as such a low percentage is because their big selling games that account for the vast majority of their revenue didn’t come to the system, either because they simply cannot run on a tablet or they didn’t have enough development time once they realized the system was a success. It’s pretty self-explanatory. If they put all the games that are releasing elsewhere on Switch, it would account for a pretty sizable share. And “exceeded expectations” is all you need. What other metric is there? You can’t spin games exceeding the publishers expectations as a bad thing. Can’t do it. You’ll die trying, of that I’m sure, but you can’t do it. Dark Souls in Japan is cherry picking, given third-party Switch sales in Japan are much lower than in the west. Games that sell 5000 copies in Japan come to the west and sell 100,000 copies. There’s a few exceptions to this (like Dragon Quest). But by and large Japanese Nintendo gamers just don’t seem to be that interested in anything other than first party. Is not representative of the rest of the world though.
Where is DOOM Eternal? Where is Pillars of Eternity? On the way you impatient dude. Pre-order since September 2018? So what, like five months? I had my Final Fantasy 15 and Kingdom Hearts 3 pre-order in for five years. Final Fantasy VII Remake for years. The Last of Us 2 for years. Nobody cares if you only find two games this year you want to play. Rest of us have like 37 games on lock for the Switch this year. There’s plenty of great games to go around, new and old alike. Just because there’s a small couple months gap where Nintendo isn’t putting out some major new game, and they’re taking advantage of it to get out some nice third-party titles on the system doesn’t mean you have to have a freaking heart attack like you’ve waited 17 years for the next game to come out on Switch. I haven’t bought a PS4 game since Monster Hunter World (yes, I cancelled Kingdom Hearts 3- if it’s not on Switch I’m just not interested anymore)- you don’t see me complaining about it. I’m too busy with my nose buried in my Switch. You should be doing the same.
If you only care about “new games” then you’re in luck! Yoshi, Daemon X Machina, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Luigis Mansion 3, Mario Maker 2, Fire Emblem, Pokemon, Astral Chain, Zelda, Animal Crossing... that’s nearly a dozen exclusive titles you can’t find anywhere else, still coming this year that I can think of right off the top of my head. All of them look like quality games, or are games we know will be quality. On top of some new 3rd party games, some mentioned previously. And why would you care about Dark Souls? Oh Idk, because it’s a classic that tons of people love to death? Why else. It was my brother’s number one wanted game ever since the Switch released. And he’s a big PC gamer. Seikaro has nothing to do with it. One good game doesn’t negate the other from being good also. I just bought Trials Rising. Guess what. Also just bought Trials Fusion! And Trials Evolution! And Trials HD! Older games by the same company! You don’t hear me saying “ why would I care about those other games when I could be playing Rising?”. Because I can play both. It’s not an either or proposition. I can buy new games I like AND buy classics, either because I haven’t played them or because I have and love them so much I want them on a handheld device.
If a dozen new exclusive games a year, on top of scores of various other good third-party games and scores of other various great Indy games, on a hybrid system at that, is a midlife crisis for you, then I’d say you have serious problems. Nobody cares if you don’t have that much to play on Switch because you only play “brand new games”, because there’s still a dozen brand new exclusives coming every year that are quality games. More new games release on Switch every year that I care about than PS4 and Xbox combined. You don’t see me complaining about those systems. With you that doesn’t seem to be an option. Plenty of games releasing other people care about, plenty of exclusive games releasing every year that people care about, but you want to complain the lineup isn’t tailor suited to you. Spend more time complaining about games than actually playing them. For god sake’s dude. You can’t find anything you’re interested in then just go play something else! You keep boasting about all these other games you have to play so what the **** is the problem...
The biggest reason your argument comes off as ludicrous is because you take everything to such extremes. If you had just said, “ The Switch is a huge improvement over Wii U, and tons of games are releasing, unfortunately I’m an avid gamer and have played most of them so there’s not much interest in me for the next few months“ I can get behind that. That’s not how you roll though. For you, it’s a world ending disaster and the switch is “just like Wii U”, And all the great games releasing don’t count for squat, and you’ve been waiting an eternity just to find a game to play. In 2 years, Switch has amassed more meaningful quality exclusives than Wii U saw in a generation. And as if that wasn’t enough, it’s received the majority of the Wii U’s best exclusives as well. It’s got the best third-party support a Nintendo console has seen in generations. It’s never good enough though. Not for you. It seems you want 3rd parties to make games for a portable tablet that rival those of power consoles and PC. I’m sorry to break this to you but that’s not the world we live in. It’s not financially viable. There are three different platforms they can develop one game for on PS4/X1/PC. Switch is one platform by itself, that can’t run those types of games without major rework. The “big exciting games” it gets are the 7th gen games, because those are the ones that can actually run well on the system. They are the equivalent of 8th gen games releasing on other consoles. And it is exciting. For me at least. And for tons of others. If it’s not for you then I’m sorry, I guess play something else.
