Re: Feature: 1995's Nintendo Was Arrogant And Ahead Of Its Time All At Once

Rudy_Manchego

Great read - really enjoyed it. The business practices of Nintendo in the 80's and 90's were very draconian in their approach and it worked well but really did foster a lot of bad will in the industry. In a lot of ways, you create that which destroys you. Still very different times.

To be honest, I am quite glad that Sony came with the PS1 because I would credit Sony more than any other company for changing the perception and demographic of gaming

Re: Soapbox: There's No Shame In Playing On Easy, Even If You're A Pro

Rudy_Manchego

I wholeheartedly agree with this article as an aging gamer with kids, a job and other hobbies. I personally tend to play at normal but if I feel that I am not enjoying something because of a difficulty spike I will drop a difficulty level. I don’t play for the kudos and accolades.

I think it is great there are tough games out there for those that like them. I played Sekiro and barely got a third through it because my reaction times just weren’t good enough. Anyone that says you have to play for blah blah blah challenge is missing on accessibility for games. I had someone on a thread once tell me because I wish I could drop the difficulty on Sekiro because I loved the game but wasn’t good enough, that if I couldn’t beat bosses I shouldn’t game. I told them that I saw a guy on YouTube do Sekiro in a no death run so therefore what is the point of playing if you aren’t THAT good? No reply. Unless playing professionally or competitively , enjoy games how you like.

Re: Random: Switch Fans React To EA's Partnership With Google Stadia

Rudy_Manchego

Seems bizarre that Nintendo fans take offence. To port their big games in Frostbite would cost lots and EA clearly don’t want to do that whereas no doubt a google offered them a ton of money to run the game pretty much ‘as is’ with probably minimal cost.

There wasn’t an equal choice here. I think EA should support the Switch more but they aren’t related

Re: Of Course Pokémon Sword And Shield Is Getting Review-Bombed

Rudy_Manchego

The thing is that these clearly are review bombs because I don't think reasonably this game, whatever your feelings, would be worth a 3/10 or worse. Some of these reviews have genuine points and are valid but such scores are not in line with the comments being made. If you feel that way, this is what, a 5 or 6? I feel the same with 10/10 reviews - I mean is this once every generation or so good?

Re: Video: Nintendo Switch Lite Treated To The Flashiest Of New Trailers

Rudy_Manchego

@BarefootBowser Yeah it is not the end of the world but I would say my Switch use is 50/50 between portable and I'd be interested in the portable to be able to pick up when I need a portable for a day or 2. I travel a lot and at short notice so having to think ahead which games have the most up to date etc. isn't always ideal.

I completely agree, it isn't a blocker but it isn't smooth and if Nintendo are trying to market this as an additional advice for portability then it is not quite there for me. First world problem though

Re: Video: Nintendo Switch Lite Treated To The Flashiest Of New Trailers

Rudy_Manchego

@BarefootBowser Well, and I do base this from what I have read on other sites so apologies if incorrect, but I believe that to use your digital library across more than one Switch, you have to make a Switch your primary console. If you want to play a digital game on a non primary console you need to be connected to the internet to authenticate and then use. Then, at the same time, I believe you have manually transfer saves from the cloud and down to your device. So from my perspective, as someone that would like a Switch lite for travel and a Switch for home gaming (which I also do a lot of), it doesn't seem smooth.

Re: EA CEO Defends Microtransactions, Says It’s "Actually Possible" To Do It Right

Rudy_Manchego

@cryptologous Completely agree. I think this was my point - EA are so aggressive they are changing the games to maximise the need to purchase them. I remember playing SW:Battlefront after getting it in a sale and not actually knowing just what the heck I could play and what I needed to spend more money on.

Games are getting grindier, or having their MP components skewed to encourage additional spending in games. Sure in Fifa, you CAN play MP without mictrotransactions - but you are competing with those who HAVE.

Live service games are designed, by their very nature, to generate ongoing revenue. THey can only do that by modifying a game to encourage that revenue spend.

Re: EA CEO Defends Microtransactions, Says It’s "Actually Possible" To Do It Right

Rudy_Manchego

Guys guys guys - can we all just agree that these are just 'surprise mechanics'. The issue is that mictrotranscations covers a lot of areas. The other point is that to maximise revenue, you need to make microtransactions, in whatever form, a part of the gameplay. Having some skins or whatever as cosmetics will net you lots of money, sure, but does it keep you coming back? Does the game force you to them? The answer is no.

My problem with all this is that games are changing to accomodate this live service stuff rather than sitting alongside.

Re: Nintendo: It Would Be A "Disservice" To "Loyal Fans" To Release Animal Crossing In A Rushed State

Rudy_Manchego

Whether it is the truth or not, then meh. However, large first party games and the quarters they release in do have a significant impact to revenues and shares and the reason why most large publishers crunch or release sub par games is that missing shipping dates can cost a load in share prices and financial reporting.

So if the date has been missed and moved then we know it will be for a reason worthy of the share tumble.
