I admit that I find it annoying that Europe is getting Paper Jam this holiday season and those of us in NA must wait for an unspecified 2016 date. However, the bigger frustration for me is differences if hardware versions and special editions. I get that NA gamers prefer to 3DSXL (as do I) but it ticked a lot of people off when NOA refused to release the smaller size New Nintendo 3DS here because it meant that NA gamers were denies any opportunity to enjoy the swappable face plates.
Modern society really is a global community. People all over the world talk to each other. Gamers in every region know what gamers in other regions are getting so they know when they got the sort end of the deal on something. Nintendo has to stop acting like japan, NA and Europe are three unrelated markets and treating them all differently.
P.S I think the differences often come down to the VPs in each region needing to demonstrate that they actually have some power beyond just managing the local branch office. They like being able to determine their own release schedule and product offerings because then they can make arbitrary choices and say that it was based on their keen understanding of the local market when really it is just them doing something different for the sake of being different.
If there was a Direct tomorrow we would all be disappointed with the content because it would just be more footage of games that we already know about. Sometime in the new year they will hold a Direct to remind us all of the great line-up they have for the first half of 2016. However, I am not expecting them to announce a bunch of new games for Wii U and 3DS any time soon. If they had big games to announce for a near term release (before E3 2016) they would have shown those games at the last E3.
Nintendo is being quiet right now because they have nothing new to tell us right now.
I have zero interest in the multi-player mode so this will be a skip for me unless Nintendo patches the game later to make the single player campaign less tedious.
I will probably pick this up. I love the character and I love side scrolling platform games. However, I was also disappointed that it was not a 3D adventure game. I played and loved the GameCube original back in the day.
The Vita suffered more than the 3DS during the smart phone/tablet craze because its target audience was teenagers and young adults, and that is also the demographic that has bought in the hardest with smart phones and tablets. People between the ages of 15 and 25 seem to all have smart phones surgically attached to their hands these days. Nintendo was aiming at a younger audience and that is part of what allowed them to weather the storm.
However, Sony also has to take blame for the fact that they failed to support it during the crucial 2nd and 3rd years on the market because they were 100% focused on making the PS4 a success. I get that the PS4 has a much higher potential for making money, but you cannot expect a product to thrive when it gets no support from its first party platform holder.
Of course, the Vita is doing very well in Japan while the PS4 struggles there. The Japanese love their handheld game machines. Is Sony going to abandon that market when the Vita has finished its run? Perhaps they expect that mobile gaming will take over the handheld sector there as well.
I really wanted to be hyped about this game, but in the back of my mind I was always worried that the single player experience would fall flat. Now that I know my fears were justified, this game just went from a potential day one purchase to a game that I will probably never buy. I have zero interest in a multiplayer Zelda game.
It is a smart move for Nintendo to market primarily with the Nintendo brand rather than the names of individual systems. It does not necessarily mean anything beyond that.
I do not think that dedicated consoles will go away, but they will decline in market share. More and more people will decide that they do not need a console to play good video games. They can do it on a tablet, or a PC or a even use a streaming service on their smart TV.
I have the first game in backlog. Picked it up cheap earlier this year. I suppose I will have to give it a try to see how it plays before this sequel launches.
Star Fox Zero was never going to be Nintendo's big Christmas game. That role is filled by Super Mario Maker. Mario Maker is the game that Nintendo will market aggressively this Christmas and Mario Maker is the game that will entice people to pick up a system. That would have been true even if Star Fox Zero was still arriving this holiday. I am a big fan of Star Fox, but I have no delusions about it being a AAA franchise.
So far I love everything about this game. The art style is amazing. Turn based combat is perfect for me and the setting looks interesting. I hope this comes to the west.
Power Drift was included in Yu Suzuki Game Works for Dreamcast. I always found it disorienting, but I would give it a go if it was released here for 3DS.
I think the Wii U will be a popular system to collect for in the future. The library is relatively small, but has a high proportion of good games in the mix because the shovel ware producers stayed away. Full set collectors will not have to pinch their nose and shell out lots of money for crappy Barbie games and endless sport game variations.
From the article I get the impression that these 3D remaster games are not selling in huge numbers if there was doubt about a second batch happening. The problem with Mega Drive/Genesis games is that they are very easy to freely emulate. Thus, you have to convince gamers that the 3D graphics are worth paying for.
Things like this can happen to people with "normal" jobs as well. I have heard tales of people who went home after a bad day at work and posted something about their boss or a co-worker on their Facebook page. Word gets back to the company and get fired for discussing internal company business on a public forum.
The problem here is that you are imagining that you had his job and then lost it. You know you would feel very bad about that and thus you feel it is unfair.
There is a clause in my contract with my current company that states if I make public statements that tarnish the image of the company or any of its employees then I can be terminated. If I went on twitter and started airing the company's dirty laundry, and I got fired for it, that would be on my head. People might feel sorry for me, but that would not change the fact that it was my fault and there would be no one to blame but me.
If this guy had only spoken about localization I am sure that he would have been OK. However, he spoke about senior employees in the company (some of the biggest) in a less than flattering way. He got the air and kind of lost his mind a bit in the spotlight. That is why he was fired. Its too bad, but its not unfair.
The comments that he made could be interpreted as insulting by some of Nintendo's customers. He should have known better than to make comments like that in a public broadcast.
I am ashamed to say that although I own all of the Paper Mario games released to date, the first one is the only one that I have actually played through. My gaming backlog is ridiculous. I need to stop collecting games.
Having only one retail version of the game in the Europe does not mean that you get both story lines for one price. It will still work the same way as the Japanese version in which you have to choose a path after the first few missions and then you are locked in to that path. To pay the other path is a $16 DLC cost.
I routinely ignore features of games that I don't care about. Many RPGs include cooking systems and I never use them. This "pet your friends" feature of Fire Emblem is definitely something that I will ignore. It sounds creepy. However, if there are other people that like that kind of thing then good for them. Who am I to judge?
@vonseux
I noticed that you have the same avatar, but I did not copy you on purpose. Shining Force III is one of my all-time favorite games. I use Synbios as an avatar on several forums. However, since you have been here longer I have decided to switch my avatar to Prince Medion.
Within a few years this system of content delivery will be the norm. A limited number of physical copies will be produced to satisfy collectors and those who prefer having a physical product that they can resell later. If you want the physical version then you need to buy early because they will be almost impossible to get within a few months of release. Everyone else will need to buy a digital version. This system will ensure that the publishers can get some buzz around their product launch (lots of pre-orders) but they do not have to produce and ship lots of copies that might never sell.
In recent years SNK has not done a good job of taking advantage of their large stable of IPs. I wish the new owners the best with that, but I am also skeptical. This could lead to a resurgence of the brand, or it could lead to a series of quick sequels to SNK series that are uninspired and designed to make quick money off of loyal fans.
By saying that they want to do a Marvel, I assume this means that they want to use King of Fighters as a main thrust (similar to the Avengers movies) and then follow-up with games that focus on certain sets of characters. How is that different from what SNK has done all along?
Atlus manages to localize many so called "niche" games and make money doing it. Why is it that Atlus can do this but bigger companies like Nintendo and Square Enix supposedly can't? Voice acting could be part of it. However, I think Atlus is better at managing the cost of localization so that they can get it done without breaking the bank. The big companies do not know how to do anything in a cost efficient way.
Even if the NX is an all-in-one solution I seriously doubt that Nintendo will roll it out in both console and handheld form at the same time. My prediction is that NX will be released first as a console only and the handheld version will lag by 18 months or so.
I fully intend to buy this game, but not at the inflated launch price. When it comes down to $40 I will order it from Amazon. I understand that Atlus games are typically niche products, but I don't understand why they price their games so high at launch and then discount them heavily within 6 months or so. Why not just come out at the same price as most games and hold it steady for the first year?
SquareEnix should take advantage of Kickstarter when they are concerned about the potential market for localized versions of their JRPGs. Get the fans to support the localization project in exchange for a copy of the localized game, or if they want to go big with their support (over $100 pledged) they can get extra stuff like having an NPC character named after them in the localized version. If 25,000 people committed $40 US each they would have a million dollar budget for their localization. Sales of additional copies would be their profit. Considering that Bravely Second sold 400K units in the west it should not be hard to drum up at least 25K people to support localization of a Dragon Quest game.
I don't think it matters what other products are hitting the shelves around the same time. Nintendo did not position this title (and bundles) to dominate the month of September. The date is more about having the product out there for the entire build up to Christmas. Nintendo super fans and collectors will all pick it up in September and then Nintendo will refresh stock for the Christmas shopping season. I personally think that Mario Maker will sell very well (more than 3 million lifetime) and that the bundle will also do well for them.
There is no denying that the Wii U has been something of a disaster on the hardware side. However, there have been several software titles that sold very well. I think the Wii U will be highly coveted by collectors in a few years. It has a library that is small but packed with high quality games. That is the kind of thing that collectors love.
The releases this year are only mildly exciting for me. I will get Tri-Force Heroes if it plays well as a single player game. Chibi-Robo will definitely get a look and Etrian Odyssey is always good (but not at $60). Legend of Legacy will get a look so long as they offer a not-hard-as-nails difficulty option. However, there is nothing this year that makes me want to rush out an pre-order it.
2016 is a different matter. Fire Emblem Fates, Bravely Second and Mario and Luigi : Paper Jam are my three most wanted 3DS games and they are all coming out in 2016.
It is not hard to see why the Fire Emblem franchise turned around with Awakening. The DS entries were not much of an improvement from GBA in terms of presentation. With Awakening the series took a huge step upward in terms of graphics, cut scenes and the ability to tell an engrossing story. gameplay is always the most important factor, but presentation is a close second.
For every game that actually gets released there are several that never got past the concept stage or were dropped early in development. People need to stop getting upset about every story revealing a potential sequel in a popular franchise that died somewhere along the line. If it died, there is usually a good reason why (i.e. it was not very good).
Also, NST was never one of Nintendo's best developers. I personally feel that Federation Force is safer in the hands of Next level Games than NST. If there are staff members at NST who are upset that they were not brought in on the project then I have to ask ... why would they expect to be called in? It is not a sequel to Hunters.
E3 was originally created to be a trade show where publishers showed off the products they had upcoming so that retailors would get excited about the possibility of selling those games. If you look at it that way then Nintendo's approach of showing only what they will launch in the next year is spot on. Retailors care about what products they will be able to sell this holiday season. They will worry about next year when next year arrives.
Of course, the end consumers have a different agenda. They want Nintendo to give them reasons to be excited about the future of the platform that they own. With the Wii U struggling and the NX already announced, I think that most Wii U owners were looking for assurance that Nintendo was not going to abandon the Wii U early. They wanted Nintendo to announce at least a couple of new games that would help them to remain excited about the future of the Wii U. The opposite is what actually happened. Nintendo mostly focused on games that we already knew about and the few surprises that they did not have much impact. I think that is the main reason why Wii U owners are upset.
The thing that has always bothered me about this game is the multi-player focus. Everything that I have heard about it so far suggests that it is not designed with a single player experience in mind. That is the primary reason that I will probably not buy it.
I will echo the comments of a few other people here and say that if the single player mode is fun then I will buy it, otherwise I will skip. Four Swords on GameCube was fun as a single player game so I expect that this will be too.
Here are my bold predictions for the next year. This is based entirely on my own speculation.
Nintendo will announce a Wii U price drop in September. They will also create a value bundle with the console and a couple of big games (probably Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon) for $300. Black Friday sales will see older Wii U bundles selling for $150 at most major retail chains. The combination of all this will allow the Wii U to reach 15 million in lifetime sales by March 31st 2016.
At E3 2016 Nintendo will unveil NX as a development platform similar to I/OS that will eventually be available in different formats from Nintendo (console/handheld) but may also be licensed to other companies to be included in their products (TVs with NX built in, NX on PC etc). They will also announce whatever Retro Studios is working on and a new Mario 3D World game as launch titles. The launch will be set for spring 2017 with the first format being a Nintendo home console. The handheld version will not show up for at least 18 months after that, mostly due to the cost of producing such a thing.
Nintendo will then re-affirm their intentions to support the Wii U through Christmas 2016 by showcasing Zelda Wii U and a few other games. Zelda Wii U will eventually show up on NX, but not at launch. The launch will be about games that were designed with NX in mind.
This is just pure speculation on my part, but we still do not know what Retro Studios is currently working on. I bet that it is an NX game. Nintendo really want NX to get off to a flying start so my guess is that Retro Studios started on a Wii U game and then had it shifted to the NX so that it would be ready for launch. Perhaps it is a new Metroid Prime. Perhaps it is a new IP. Whatever it is, I bet it will be exactly the kind of game that fans will be excited about when they finally see it revealed.
I would love to see both DQ VII and DQ VIII come to west. However, I am not holding my breath.
A few years ago there was a fan translation project for Final Fantasy Zero on the PSP. Square ignored the project until it was complete and then within a week of the completed patch being distributed Square sent a cease and desist letter. Perhaps they have decided to be more diligent about shutting these things down before they mange to get a playable game out there.
Nintendo's biggest problem is that they do not have enough development staff to keep a steady supply of games coming to both Wii U and 3DS. I think that the move to HD made the situation worse in terms of how much time and money is required for each HD title. Zelda Wii U is probably keeping a big chunk of their staff busy at the moment. It would be hard to convince investors that having 100 people work on an F-Zero game was more important than having those 100 people work on a franchise that is likely to sell much better.
I am hoping that this situation will improve with NX. If it really is a unified platform with the same titles playable across both home console and handheld devices then Nintendo will no longer need to split their development teams between platforms and fans will get a wider variety of games to play as a result.

However, there is nothing this year that makes me want to rush out an pre-order it.
2016 is a different matter. Fire Emblem Fates, Bravely Second and Mario and Luigi : Paper Jam are my three most wanted 3DS games and they are all coming out in 2016.
Re: Fire Emblem Fates Third Path And New HOME Theme Launch In Japan
It is not hard to see why the Fire Emblem franchise turned around with Awakening. The DS entries were not much of an improvement from GBA in terms of presentation. With Awakening the series took a huge step upward in terms of graphics, cut scenes and the ability to tell an engrossing story. gameplay is always the most important factor, but presentation is a close second.
Re: Unseen64 Digs Up Development Insights Into Metroid Prime: Hunters, Dread and Federation Force
Re: The Square Enix Teases for Dragon Quest 3DS Localisations Ramp Up
If this is true, then it would be the best 3DS news that I have seen this year! I would definitely buy both.
Re: Nintendo Seeks Improvement at E3 2016, Though Miyamoto Defends Near-Term Rather Than "Dream-Like Demonstrations"
Re: Reggie Fils-Aime Asks for Fan Trust With Metroid Prime: Federation Force
The thing that has always bothered me about this game is the multi-player focus. Everything that I have heard about it so far suggests that it is not designed with a single player experience in mind. That is the primary reason that I will probably not buy it.
Re: The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes Promises a Lot of Content and Playtime
I will echo the comments of a few other people here and say that if the single player mode is fun then I will buy it, otherwise I will skip. Four Swords on GameCube was fun as a single player game so I expect that this will be too.
Re: Talking Point: E3 Highlighted Nintendo's Development Shift Towards NX, and Away from Wii U
Re: Reggie Fils-Aime Tackles Metroid Prime: Federation Force and amiibo Criticism
Re: Square Enix Shuts Down Dragon Quest VII Fan Translation Project
I would love to see both DQ VII and DQ VIII come to west. However, I am not holding my breath.
A few years ago there was a fan translation project for Final Fantasy Zero on the PSP. Square ignored the project until it was complete and then within a week of the completed patch being distributed Square sent a cease and desist letter. Perhaps they have decided to be more diligent about shutting these things down before they mange to get a playable game out there.
Re: Exclusive: We Almost Got A Wii U F-Zero Created By Burnout Studio Criterion
