Dragon Quest fans rejoice - Square Enix hasn't turned its back on you after all.
It was confirmed during today's packed Nintendo Direct broadcast that Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past and Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King are both headed to the west.
The games are coming to the 3DS and are enhanced remakes of past titles in the series.
Dragon Quest VII is set for launch early next year, while Dragon Quest VIII is expected later in 2016.

Great!! I always wanted to play Dragon Quest VIII!! (Never had a PS2). It is unbelievable that they release BOTH dragon quest the same year... I thought they were releasing VII and, if sales were good, VIII on 2017.
Best news from the whole Direct! I was almost screaming out loud for the announcement of VII and watched with open mouth that they also announced VIII. 2016 will be the ultimate handheld JRPG year
Best bit of this, and ANY Direct for me. I'm genuinely so excited, particularly for DQVII which has never ever been released in Europe. So we get one game that will actually be brand new to us, AND a handheld port of what I think is one of my greatest JRPGs ever made.
Wait, can someone shake the screen. Does it really say DQVII coming to the west?!!
This better include Europe too.
Yay!
Finally YESSSSS!!!!
@SuperWiiU It was in the European direct. It's coming
They never said a physical release, but I'd happily take a digital only release if it was that or no release at all.
Is this been published by Nintendo?
DQ 7,8 & Cloud for Smash, today was a good day.
YESSS!
Digital, physical, I don't care, my body is ready!
MINE MINE MINE!!!
I'm really not selflish....
YESSSS!!!!! Oh my jesus, I didn't think this would ever happen! Ohhhhhh my gosh! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
@Peach64 I only do physical, so if it's only digital it'll mean it still doesn't have EU release as far as I'm concerned.
Good! It took three years but good.
I'm still in a puzzled state, this news still hasn't registered properly!
All the 3DS news in the ND today made me think NX is more likely to be 3DS backwards compatible than Wii U backwards compatible.
And if not, it's replacing Wii U before 3DS. 3DS was on a roll.
I need to get a job with a long mass transit commutev
This and the Pokemon VC games made me really happy today.
Oh my God! This has made my day, week, and probably month too. Square Enix finally stopped being complete imbeciles and gave us some of the great Dragon Quest games!
So is hell freezing over?
I just hope they sell now. They're giving the series a chance, but we'll have blown it if they flop.
I'm really happy to hear this. DQ IX is the only DQ game I played, but I loved it and I've been meaning to get the other DS games.
@Peach64 Does it really matter if they sell that well(ofcouse they will)? We've got all the numbered games now and DQXI has already been confirmed for 3DS.
This one announcement made me cry. And jump all over my room like a crazy person. Both games will make 2016 for me.
Unless Atlus spits out Etrian Odyssey V or Untold 3.
This will actually probably get me to buy a Nintendo for the first time in years! Great news from Nintendo!
I'm willing to bet that Nintendo is publishing these - Squenix showed several times that they're too cheap to do it themselves (TecmoKoei had to do the whole localization for Dragon Quest Heroes by themselves, and still had to print that Squenix logo on the box), even going so far as to state that they don't believe in DQ's success in the west, despite both DQVIII and IX proving them otherwise.
Great news can't wait to play both of these great games!!!
Really exciting. Hope they get physical releases.
@Kaze_Memaryu If that ends up being the case, thank the Goddess for Nintendo's efforts. Square's stance on the DQ series in the West is appalling.
SO freaking thankful we're finally getting these, I'm been pining for them for so long, I thought we'd never see them.
What game should I start with? I'm new to the series. Btw if replies from this site don't go to your inbox, tweet me.
@Peach64
"But WE'LL have blown it if they flop"
That's a really outstanding comment. Most people skirt responsibility when it comes to not seeing a new entry of a franchise they want. It's commendable to see you acknowledge that ultimately, WE are the ones that dig our own graves many times. It's because WE don't buy games when we know they need support to continue. Then we complain we don't get another.
[tips hat]
@Captain_Gonru "Or a comfy chair with baseball on tv."
Isn't that what the Gamepad is for?
hmm, not sure what my best moment was. Cloud obviously pops into my head though. It was as if Nintendo actually paid attention to how bad their E3 was and how good Sony was and said, "hey, lets do something w/ FF7".
I always need to watch it twice to digest it, first time I'm too much on edge waiting for something big, that I know darn well isn't coming, but you always hope. Waiting for my kids to finish their homework so we can all watch it as a family. Maybe we'll make popcorn.
will definitely be getting these games when they come to the west. I love Dragon Quest games. 2016 is a great year for games (at least for the 3DS).
Never thought we would see these! Agh, so excited.
I loved DQ8 on PS2 when I was younger, but never got a chance to try DQ7. Ready to put tons of hours into them next summer/fall.
DREAMS DO COME TRUE!
I have some crow to eat....excuse me. I NEVER thought that would happen. I will double dip to show my support! However I think these will stay in the box...
FINALLY!!! Square Enix can now take my money like I wanted them to!
Excellent news and about bloody time too. This was the best news of the Direct for me personally.
DQ8 localized was pretty cool, but Cloud's special cutting the stage in half? Like E3, SE owned this. Despite the fact we know they did nothing themselves.. I'm thinking these games will be digital only and just 30$ (cheaper than the Etrian remasters) BUT SE will shock everyone with a 65-75$ special edition of both titles in one physical box. Hopefully with an art book.
I'm also thinking we're going to be getting quite a few DQ VC games (and some FF ones too).
FREAKING FINALLY.
Count me in.
Best news of the day! So excited for this!
@JaxonH @Peach64's comment is valid though. Fans have been begging for this for years and calling Square-Enix lazy money-haters. You would think from the noise made online that there is significant demand for this so the proof will be in the sales. Localising a title like this is expensive and time consuming (whoever publishes it) and so the sales will be watched extremely closely.
Great news though. So pleased it's finally coming over.
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!
OH. MY. GOD. YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANK THE HIGH GODDESS ABOVE FOR OUR SAVIOR HAS RETURNED, THANK YOU SE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ahem, oh my god. Oh my god. The 3DS is going to have a great (and bankrupting) year next year. I can't believe we have finally lived to see the day Dragon Quest returns to the states. Thank you Nintendo and thank you Square Enix. Pre-ordering both ASAP.
This was great. I really hope that with things like this Dragon Quest starts to pick up more popularity in the west. Also, it fits in with Dragon Quest XI being on 3DS and NX.
Finally! It's about time Square-Enix realized how many of us were waiting for DQ7 to release here, and to also get DQ8 confirmed as well ... can't wipe the smile off this long-time DQ fan's face.
Super excited for this too. I have never played Dragon Quest before, but any great RPG is always welcome! 2016 is already packed, but now add another 2 must have game to the list. My wallet will be crying in 2016.
FINALLY! I can't believe it! Square-Enix actually still has some sense left in them!
Awesome. Good on Nintendo & Square Enix for this move. I was honestly losing some faith in Square for a while there, but this was definitely a solid move. Unexpected too. I'll for sure be buying both.
If IV, V, and VI are any indication I think I will have to preorder these since they may not mass produce a large quantity of copies in fear that they won't be a big seller. Either way as a big Dragon Quest fan all I can say is: It is about dang time!
So happy! Been wanting to play DQ7 on the go for years now! Day 1 purchase.
This and Pokemon have made my day. About time!
that's my personal highlight from nintendo direct (I'm almost lying since it's the best one in my eyes)diehard dragon quest fan
First Cloud, mainly a PlayStation icon, is announced for Smash; then, the main Dragon Quest game available on PS2, namely Dragon Quest VIII, is going to be available on 3DS.
Coupled with the fact Square-Enix just remembered Nintendo-based Square fans still exist, all the Square news today made me wonder if the Devil's homeworld hasn't gotten a whole lot colder all of a sudden.
@Captain_Gonru AC:Naked and Afraid needs to be an app. I'll be ok if they don't call it that, but - no lie - I was watching the ND w/ my 13 year old and during that part he turned to look at me and said - "That part looks better than the whole game." Appify it. Kirby Triple Deluxe and it's 2 minigame spin-offs sets the precedent. Well I'm glad your headaches have gone away. Not being disgusted is a win for you.
I agree about Cloud being a weak ending when everybody was waiting for Minecraft - Jax is still waiting - but it felt like such an obvious choice after the FF7 excitmeent that Sony got, a "me too" moment for Ntinedo. At least they had already gotten Zelda U and Starfox out of the way, it was Minecraft or Cloud. I think even the Pokemon Z hopeful had given up by then after all the previous Pokemon news. Personally it's a teaser for me b/c w/o Sephiroth Cloud is nothing. It's like putting Rick Jones in but not the Hulk. I mean he's still Rick Jones, but why bother? So I'm in waiting mode on that announcement, and I'll be lsitneing very intently for One Winged Angel during the SSB ND in December. .
Yes! Insta-buy for me on both. I really didn't want to buy the iOS versions.
Finally, I have waited all these years.
OMG!!!! GREAT NEWS !
I'm so happy they announced this! Especially VIII.
YESSSSS ! ! So happy !
Exciting news ! Hope they go for physical copies as I don't buy digital games on consoles...
....Finally.... T_T * SOB *
@mookysam I'm pretty sure Nintendo publishes them, as both games got German names in the German direct, which indicates the game will be translated into German, which Square Enix wouldn't do. Not for these games anyway.
Looks like I'll finally be playing some Dragon Quest.
Amazing news!
I never thought this could happen.
Awesome can't wait more DQ games on Nintendo platforms plz.
I only played DQ Chapters of the Chosen on DS, how do these two compare to it?
I never played a Dragon Quest game in my life but I do love Akira Toriyamas art, to what kind of other rpg this series is most comperable?
Both of these will be day one purchases for me.
This was probably the most exciting news for me aside from the pure shock and wonder of the Cloud reveal. Amazing news!! I'll definitely get VII, probably VIII too.
Nope, didn't think this would happen. Maybe we'll get those FF5 and 6 ports some day too. I mean, with this, the Bravely series and Cloud in SSB, Square Enix and Nintendo seem to be getting on like a pair of chocbos. Might we even see FF7 ported now?!
@Captain_Gonru "Fun AC update."
Oh man, that's funny, I was going to comment to you while I was inside of Target - but I decided to come home and eat breakfast instead. Probably a good thing I didn't, or we would need to tell our wives about us.
So anyway, looking for the B2G1 games I wanted, but they only had 2 of the 4, I was smart, I had a back-up game, but not 2 back-up games. So after nto finding 3 games I started looking for AC:aF, amiibo and cards. Nothing. Nada. Zilch. Not even a sticker. So I looked behind the counter and saw some open boxes w/ the game box and some loose amiibo inside. That was at about 8:30. Nobody was working so I dind't bother asking anyone about it. Ddin't knwo about Mewtwo, I would l have looked for him for my kid.
But yeah, I think the scalpers have moved on. And the diehard collectors are still importing. But that game man. That and Devil's Third. And Fatal Frame digital only. And AC:aF not digital. Talk abut not even trying.
Are you still boycotting Amazon? They have Mabel, Tom Nook and the 3 pack hourly this afternoon. Though it looks like you'll probably be able to find them elsewhere. Are you allowed to buy things while your'e technically working?
OK, so I'm still off topic. If AC:aF had some actual game coverage this could be there, so that's my excuse. I mean, it's out today, where are the reviews and gameplay vids? Nada y nada y mas nada.
Awesome news, though I hope they sell well. It might have been better for Square Enix/Nintendo to release the two on one card as a combo pack (which would only happen if space on the 3DS card allowed, yeah). That would really catch people's attention!
Dragon Quest VIII is my favorite game in the JRPG genre. Glad to see the west will get a chance to relive the experience with new features, content, and gameplay tweaks.
Will certainly need to check out the Dragon Quest VII remake as well. Both are day one purchases, in my book.
I have no doubt that Nintendo had a hand in bringing these games to the West. I would not be surprised if Nintendo turns out to be the publisher.
When I saw the announcement on the direct a great big smile crossed my face and I thought.....Nintendo is the best! Seriously they are. That was a great direct and I had no clue these were being announced. Day one purchases! I can't wait to play these. 2016 is lookin good.
My wallet is crying right now as to the amount of games I'll be buying at the end of this year and next.
Yes, these will complete my portable Dragon Quest collection. Can't have DQ9 without DQ7 & DQ8.
@Captain_Gonru "Slime amiibo"
hmm, I'm going to go w/ "no" on that one, Sony has dibs on the slime, on both PS4 and Vita. Apparnelty Vita is still a thing. Who knows, might even outsell Wii U someday.
http://www.pushsquare.com/news/2015/11/is_this_the_most_glorious_ps_vita_design_yet
@Captain_Gonru That's so much better in context than in my inbox.
This was a fantastic Nintendo Direct. I need more hours in the day!
