The Media Create Japanese chart results have been later than normal this week, but the eventual outcome certainly has some positives for Nintendo.
For starters, Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon has claimed top spot in its début week, with the 3DS title sneaking past 150,000 sales. Super Mario Maker claims second spot in its second week in the chart, with two more Japan-only 3DS titles in the Yo-Kai Watch and Dragon Quest franchises following close behind. All told there are positives for Nintendo in the software stakes - results are below with lifetime sales in brackets.

- [Wii U] Mario Kart 8 (Nintendo, 05/29/14) – 4,095 (1,126,412)
Moving onto hardware, the New 3DS LL (XL) holds off a strong challenge from Vita, and notably the Wii U leads the way in home consoles for the second week in a row. Though both Wii U and PS4 saw a decline compared to last week, it's Nintendo's system that holds firmer and maintains sales in five figures. The results are below with last week's sales in brackets.
- New 3DS LL – 19,811 (21,504)
- PlayStation Vita – 19,471 (9,018)
- Wii U – 16,033 (20,891)

- PlayStation Vita TV – 739 (462)
- Xbox One – 737 (207)
- 3DS LL – 729 (836)
Another positive week for Nintendo in its homeland, and it'll be interesting to see how Super Mario Maker fares in the next set of US NPD results.

Thomas this is not accurate, or to say it other way, you missed the fact PS4 has got a cut price announced. Next week sales will be extremely poor, because japanese people will wait, but probably PS4 will lead the WiiU by the end of the year, while 2016 will be a massacre.
It will be interesting to see how long Splatoon and Mario Maker can stay on the list and keep Wii U hardware selling. Japan doesnt have another major release for Wii U until?????
Interesting to see most of those new releases are for Sony systems.
Quite the influx of PSV games there. I wonder just how fast Splatoon will/might pass over the million mark in Japan, especially compared with MK8.
Good to see Splatoon still has legs also I'm very curious how Yo Kai Watch will do in the west.
PS3 is still trucking along too which is a bit surprising.
Some day I'll try one of those Pokemon Mystery Dungeons. They must be liked well enough, they keep making them. Sad to see Super Mario Maker not doing crazy numbers of there. It's an awesome game.
NO!!!!!!!!!!!!! FIRE EMBLEM IS GONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DOOOOOOMMMED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
PS4 is getting a price drop in Japan next week, of course sales are going to be lower. This week, and on next week's charts.
Will Mario Maker sustane any momentum or will it fade. I honestly believe Japan is Marioed out and they've mostly moved on. For that matter I would be curious to see out the Wii U Zelda does. That's also another franchise that seems to be fading in Japan.
Ha, Playstation 4 is doomed!
@Artwark I might have missed the sarcasm, but Fire Emblem Fates sold extremely well in Japan (considering the series' history). I believe it not only had the best FE launch to date, but I think Awakening has sold 500K+ (lifetime sales) in Japan, and Fates has already broken 400K+, and is on its way to 500K. Fire Emblem has never been a multi-million copies seller, and they're actually doing well, so I don't see the "DOOMED"
Nice to hear some positive news, for once, but seriously, for the WiiU to keep selling with only few (albeit great) games, is something short of a miracle. I noticed there is some kind of balance on the type of games on the chart though, over there. Not all are violent/war shooters, at least -sigh.
read comments - Nothing attracts trolls like a good old positive article, I see, lol.
My expectations for SMM were a lot higher.
@Chubblings But then why isn't the chart showing FE fates?
Also, considering how we haven't gotten and advance wars game yet, I'm assuming the reason for that is that the last game didn't sell well. Then in that case, how can 500,000 sales be good if a lot of games need to sell more than that?
Japan isn't the World. Wii U is ironically struggling in every other place as PS4 becomes stronger.
wow crazy that happy home maker has sold nearly as much as mario kart 8 in such a short time.
@Artwark Don't worry about it the special edition containing both versions was counted as a separate release and sold about 100k. Fates is already above 500k making it the 2nd best selling Fire Emblem game in Japan, just above Awakening and below Mystery of the Emblem(SNES).
Hell it's already outsold Radiant Dawn and Path of Radiance's Worldwide sales and hot on Shadow Dragon's and it's not even out of Japan yet. It's bound to end up somewhere around Fire Emblem: Awakening which would make it the 3rd or 4th best selling SRPG of all time(or 2nd or 1st if Nintendo are lucky and it's even more popular in the west) very closely behind Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy Tactics Advance.
Fire Emblem's future is already safer than its ever been. Advance War's was selling way worse and the biggest problem wasn't selling anything and more importantly next to nothing in Japan, which is a problem since that's the country that produced it.
WOOoooooooooooooooooOOOO! I mean.....um....yep that certainly is good news.=)
@andrea987
No trolling here, at least for my part.
It's just if you say the WiiU is outselling the PS4 16k vs. 8k without giving the reason, then people will get scared next time PS4 will be over 50k, that's all.
I'm just surprised that the Xbox One outsold something for once! XD
What a pathetic number for the PS4 lol.
@SuperCharlie78 Sure kid, no trolling at all. "2016 will be a massacre", lol. Honestly, I love my PS3, but such brand loyalty must be unhealthy, surely. Just joking, of course, whatever floats your boat, man. Ciao!
@SuperCharlie78
It's not like the PS4 was doing all that great before the price cut though. It dropped a few thousand from it's norm, which is FAR from 50k. It had one good week when MGSV released, then back to the 12k range.
Sad to see the Vita do so well around the world but dead in the water here in America. Wii U and the Vita are quality systems I don't understand gamers now a days.
I never played any of the Mystery Dungeon games and I have heard a lot of good things about them from series fans. If I have the money, I'll consider picking it up. And like others have said, it's sad to see the VITA performing so poorly in the US. It's great system and Sony isn't giving it the support it needs, at least in the west. For the Wii U, I don't really see Mario Maker pushing out a ton of systems on its own. Don't get me wrong, I am expecting a sales push. It just won't be to a significant degree.
@Artwark You probably saw Dr_Lugae's comment, which pretty much summed up what I had to say. Sure, 500,000 may not be a lot for a game, like Mario Kart per se, but for Fire Emblem, this is the best it's ever been, and considering it was initially a niche series, 500K is fantastic. Nintendo was more than pleased with Awakening's sales, enough that they continued the franchise, and with Fates, they likely anticipated around the same sales target. The fact that Fates is going to easily be the best selling title in the ENTIRE franchise (more than Awakening) is all that matters (the relative quantity is what's important, not the quantity in general). The Advance Wars franchise is great, but they sold poorly—Fire Emblem at this point, is WAY above the Advance Wars sales level (which, even though I loved them, they did sell poorly).
I understand the concern, and to answer your question as to why it's not on the charts this week, it's been on the charts for months since its debut, which is impressive in itself, and FE, like many other games/franchises, isn't exactly known for long-standing legs in sales (only a select few franchises like Mario, fit into that category).
@SuperCharlie78 Well, there is it.
@XCWarrior The ones for the DS were good, the last 3DS one wasn't that great, not too sure about this one.
@Spoony_Tech I'd be curious to see how SMM would have done on 3DS. I imagine the 3DS can't handle it, but to me that's where 2D platformers belong. Zelda and Starfox need the big screen and surround sound, but SMM is almost all Gamepad. And single player.
Still a good week overall, whatever the reasons, for Nintendo.
Well, this'll lead to 10 more Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games instead of Pokemon spin offs we'd much prefer like a Snap 2, Conquest 2 or heck, a Ranger 4 since enough time has past. Hell, commission Zen Studios to make some Wii U exclusive Pokemon tables for Zen Pinball 2 and call it a new Pokemon Pinball if you want.
Just seems the only Pokemon spin offs we get these days are MD, Rumble, and the odd Puzzle game. I miss the days when we got different new spin offs every now and then, but now they're just sticking with what sales/works.
Vita TV outsold the Xbox One. MS gets no love in Japan.
@rjejr With Hyrule Warriors making that jump I wouldn't be surprised to see a 3ds version minus the HD side of it. I could see it selling at least over 500k in Japan faster then the Wii U but I just think Mario is played out and they want something new. Its obvious when sales for pokemon, ac, and Monster Hunter are 10 times Mario sales.
@Spoony_Tech Surprised they didn't split SMM like SSB, HD on Wii U, old school on 3DS. And don't forget Yokai Watch and Puzzle and Dragons. Good thing Ntineod owns Pokemon or they'ld be "no party" this holiday on 3DS as well as Wii U. They should have paid Lego for a Mushroom Kingdom world in Lego D.
@rjejr I didn't forget Kokai Watch just didn't know who to spell it.
@SuperCharlie78 Good point.
@Spoony_Tech it's all about Mario over there mate.
You need to visit Japan just to see.
So the Wii U is shooting straight up to the stars.
Good to see.
@rjejr
Nintendo's next handheld (NX??) will more than likely have the sufficient screen resolution and processing power to handle a game like Splatoon or Mario Maker, so it will be interesting to see how well a Splatoon and Mario Maker port/sequel will perform on the handheld should Nintendo ever decide to develop those two games for the Wii U.To me, both title have the potential to become 5-6+ million sellers, but were limited in sales by the Wii U's pitiful install base.
Wii U didn't drop that much, a good indication that it could sell in 5 digits for a while with both SMM and Splatoon. Now Wii U need another game that could keep it selling, but sadly major releases is pushed to next year. Will be interesting to see how it'll perform this holiday.
3DS and PSV seems to be doing good. Not sure why PSV dropped last week, but glad that it shoot back up. PS4 drop is expected but will probably have a higher baseline after the price cut. Also XBO increased more than 200% compared to last week!
@Mr_Zurkon Correction Good to see Splatoon still has "tentacles"
The Wii u is a turd and I'm glad the vita outsold it
@Spoony_Tech "just didn't know who to spell it"
Never stopped me.
@rjejr What did you think of the Muppets?
@Spoony_Tech there are only 2.5m Wii U's in Japan, making SMM have an 8% ratio, it's not great, but it's not terrible, and it will continue to grow as this game will have long legs.
Wii U games are simply not selling well at all. Heck my father-in-law has a Wii U but he only has 1 game, Dragon Quest X, that's all he cares about. He likes mario and he'd like to buy SMM, but he's busy playing DQX, that game never ends, so I won''t be surprised if he never buys an other Wii U game. It's an MMO afterall.
But you can't seriously compare SMM, a Wii U title, to Pokemon, AC and MH, which are 3DS titles. The 3DS install base in Japan is over 16m vs. Wii U's 2.5m There's no comparison. Using vgchatz numbers (I know it's not super accurate but it's better than nothing) MH4G (ultimate) sold 2.56m, SM3DL sold 2.07m, NSMB2 sold 2.37m, ACNL sold 4.11m, Pokemon X/Y sold 4.3m, OR/AS sold 2.83m. As you can clearly see MH, AC and Pokemon are NOT selling 10 times more than Mario titles. Heck if you are comparing MH3G (ultimate) on Wii U it only sold 0.22m where as NSMBU sold 1.24 (the current best selling Wii U title in Japan) and SM3DW sold 0.65 (4th best selling Wii U game in Japan). Again these numbered aren't the most accurate but it gives you food for thought.
Mario Kart 8 sold 326k on launch week, it's higher of course, but it's not that great for a Mario Kart game, Mario Karts always sells way more copies than Super Mario games. If Splatoon, Nintendo's HOTTEST Wii U IP in Japan only sold 145k it's first week. SMM launch week was 150k (when including the Wii U bundles). So the sales really aren't that bad.
Would this game have sold better on 3DS, hell yes, Japan is mobile centric and home console gaming isn't very strong here.
Well this is good news I guess. If only these charts reflected the western gaming market. After roughly thirty years of gaming I can honestly say my taste in games is very similar to our Japanese gamer friends.
I usually look at the western sales charts and think to myself, not interested.
Dragon Quest VIII is doomed!
Mystery dungeon is an awesome series, but what I really want is conquest 2 or ranger 4.
@Spoony_Tech I'm waiting for it to be on demand w/o the commercials. I checked after it aired and I believe today was that day. So after the Mets clinch this afternoon.
@Nerevar
SPLATOON!!!!
@TsukiDeity Thanks for your insight! It's always nice to hear from someone that actually lives there.
@SuperCharlie78 "Massacre" sounds so funny with the sad state of hardware sales in Japan lol
The real story here:- Xbox One Climbs a place in the charts!
Interesting seeing the New XL at #1 and Old XL at #10, even lower than Xbox One.
But at least MS still actually sell it in Japan, surely at a loss, the way many publishers still sell games digitally in Australia at a loss (as cost for classification is higher than profit for digital games, but thankfully that's finally changing to the US system that is cheap and quick).
@Nerevar Well since we're playing that game, I'm glad the 3DS outsold the Vita. Goes to show how significant proper marketing is.
@Tsurii Either way, it can't be a bad thing for FE. Maybe their interest in the band will make plenty of new FE fans.
@Artwark remember that fire emblem fates HASN'T release in the west yet until 2016 so there is still hope!(i have to say it again!)
@Artwark Humm, maybe because the game was released 3 months ago? Also, rpg an as a genre have usually shorter legs. It's already the second best selling FE ever in japan and outsold Awakening in less than an a month. It's a huge success for the series.
@Angelic_Lapras_King "Spin offs we'd much prefer"
I'll have you know that Pokemon Mystery Dungeon is a game seres I actively wait for each generation. I like Snap, Conquest and most of the others, but I think PMD tops them all for me. It has the unique concept of Pokemons living in society with no human in sight, while most of the other spin offs are humans + Pokemon like the main series. The PMD games also have pretty good/amazing stories and to me it also has addictive gameplay. It's the only spin off series I actually saw a big sub fanbase for.
