I have said this in every thread related to DQ VII and VIII but I will say it again. I really hope that these two titles do well in the west so that we can continue to receive more DQ titles in the future. After the huge petition and the letter writing campaign it would really suck if people decided to skip on the game when it was actually released.
My interest in this game was already high. Now it becomes a must buy. I am 100% certain that it will come west in 2017. Nintendo will help to make it happen just like they did with Bravely Default and the Dragon Quest games.
Considering that I went in with low expectations and came away with several new games on my to-buy list (Pikmin, Mario Maker, Wooly World and Sports Smash) I would say that it was a pretty good Direct for me. The only disappointment was confirmation that DQ VIII is delayed into 2017 and that is a minor gripe.
The impression I get from this is that Nintendo absolutely intend for 3DS and NX to co-exist, at least for a while.
@Wandman5612 Can you really blame Nintendo for wanting to get more mileage out of these games? Wii U is not going to suddenly take off and sell millions of machines this holiday season regardless of what exclusive games it has. However, there is the potential to sell millions of copies of Mario Maker on 3DS.
I was quite pleased with this Direct. I went in with low expectations and then was surprised multiple times. With NX on the horizon I fully expected Nintendo to lean hard on third parties to fill the 3DS line-up through the end of 2016 and into 2017. Obviously that is not their plan. As someone who does not own the Wii U (and has no plans to get one) I am also pleased to see Mario Maker and Yoshi's Wooly World coming over.
I suspect that the new Pikmin on 3DS will generate some of the same negative feedback as Federation Force did. Although Wii U did get a proper Pikmin game this generation I suspect that fans will be ticked if this is the Pikmin 4 that they were waiting for. We will have to wait and see once the NX is revealed.
I was underwhelmed when I tried the free demo for Yo-Kai Watch last year. The battle system felt too chaotic and I never felt like I was really in control of what my team were doing during battles (more like spinning wheels and hoping for the best). Perhaps I will give it another shot with the sequel and see if the improvements make it more fun.
This game is must-get for me. My kids love Mario Party, but I was not certain that the existing download play functionality would allow them to get the full experience out of one cart (we have two 3DS systems). It seems Nintendo has found a solution with the free client software.
I wish they would create something similar for other multi-player centric games like Tri Force Heroes.
I would buy this game for soccer and baseball alone. It seems somewhat redundant to have golf and tennis when there are already excellent Mario golf and tennis games on the 3DS, but I am not going to complain. Horse racing looks like it should be a fun multi-player game.
I am not holding my breath for any surprise reveals of big first party 3DS games that we have not previously seen. With NX on the horizon I am pretty sure that Nintendo's key resources are all committed to making sure that it has a strong library of games lined up for its first year on the market.
All that I really want to see from this Direct are confirmed release dates for Dragon Quest VIII and Ever Oasis and perhaps a confirmation that Monster Hunter Stories is coming west.
I am sure this review will be as divisive as the game itself. The people who were cautiously holding out hope for a good game will be thrilled and their faith was not misplaced. The people who have been hating on it all along were hoping that game would get terrible reviews and then flop at retail. Thus, any good review will anger them. I understand where they are coming from. They are worried that if Federation Force does well then Nintendo will get the message that Metroid fans like this direction.
The only thing I will add is that believe it or not, some people really hated Metroid Prime when it was announced because they wanted Metroid to remain a 2D franchise. They were worried that the success of Prime would kill the 2D games. There are still lots of people who refuse to play any 3D Metroid game. Different strokes for different folks I guess.
@TechJunkie69 My thoughts exactly. MK8 and SSB definitive editions are an easy way for Nintendo to pad the NX line-up early on and get extra mileage out of the massive investment they made in those two games. It would be a good business decision for Nintendo and for someone that never owned a Wii U they would be two good reasons to buy the NX.
At this point I would be shocked if NX turned out to be significantly different from what the current rumors are describing. There are just too many different outlets all claiming that this info is correct for it to be someone's uniformed speculation. There are lots of people who have seen the NX already so Nintendo was being delusional if they thought that they could keep it secret until mid-September. They should have just shown it at E3.
As for the games, it makes sense for there to be a Mario title in the first six months. The last major 3D Mario game was Super Mario 3D World so they have had lots of time to get a game together. I would expect the Pokémon game to be a remake of an older Pokémon title. I also think that the rumors of an HD remake of Smash Bros Wii U will turn out to be true as well. Mario, Zelda, Pokemon and Smash Bros all in the first year. That is how you launch a new console!
These types of machines are aimed at people who are nostalgic about the games they played as a kid but cannot be bothered to track down original hardware or figure out how emulators work. They would rather spend $60 on off-the-shelf solution that they can have up and running in five minutes and maybe spend a few hours with it before they get bored. Then it will not come out again until they are feeling nostalgic again.
@Bolt_Strike It would be a huge mistake to have games that require the base to play. That would be creating two tiers within their own market and the more expensive games to produce would be the ones that require the base (the smaller of two tiers). I doubt many developers would want to target that tier.
I think that people who were hoping for a Nintendo equivalent of the PS4 are going to be disappointed with the NX (at first) because it will not be at that level of technical prowess they were hoping for. However, once the games start rolling in they will see that you don't need that kind of power to produce world beating games. Was it not Breath of the Wild, on the Wii U, that received the most hype at E3?
@headfirstslide My thoughts exactly. The two detachable sides of the unit can connect together to form a single controller that you can comfortably hold. Voila, you have a console with a wireless controller.
At first I thought this would be too complicated, but now I think it is fine. People will get the idea that it is essentially like a tablet that has a controller which can be attached to the sides or used seperately. Only people who are totally ignorant of both tablets and video game consoles would fail to understand that. Such people would never buy a game machine anyway.
By now Nintendo knows that they cannot succeed with a dedicated home console. The Wii was a brief break from the otherwise steady decline of their home console business. With the Wii they had a revolutionary idea that captured the attention of the public. However, that fad ended quickly and Wii U was back to selling worse than the GameCube did. I seriously doubt that Nintendo will ever again produce a machine that can only be played at home attached to a TV (except for classic hardware re-releases like the mini NES). If a portable NX sold huge it won't only prove that portable systems are the way for them to go.
If this is true then I would expect Nintendo to offer different packages. The NX would be offered as a stand-alone for people who only want to play on the go (although the base could be purchased separately as well). I would expect that to be priced around $300 at launch. There would also be a combo package that included both the NX and the base for $400.
The NX would have all of the hardware required to play games. The base would only need to contain hardware for upscaling the image for HD TVs (hopefully with 4K support) and connecting to the internet. Thus it would not be too expensive.
Those of us who have primarily played on handhelds for the past few years need to be prepared for NX games to be more expensive. Depending on the game they could range from $50 to $60US.
I hope these rumors are true because this is the direction that Nintendo needs to go in. Portables are their strength so making NX portable is a must. If they tried to release another console that can only be played at home it would struggle. Making a portable that can also be played on a TV means that Nintendo fans can have the best of both worlds.
I am a bit concerned with the whole "detachable" controllers thing though. Supposedly that would allow the main unit to be plugged into the base while the controller part is used to play the game on the TV. However, it sounds complicated and possibly prone to breaking if it is attached and detached often. Hopefully there will be an option buy separate controllers to use with the base.
I am looking forward to seeing what the NX actually is.
This product is aimed squarely at casual fans who are nostalgic for the good old days when they played NES with their friends, but are not interested in paying a lot of money to explore that nostalgia. When you consider that, $60 is a very good price point and the 30 games that are included will be a great value.
If Nintendo had increased the scope to include support for SD cards and the ability to play real NES carts or download more content then the required parts would have pushed the price way up. In its current form this is a cheap system on a chip. That is why they can sell it so low and that is why it will sell well. If the price was $99 the sales would go WAY down even if the functionality was higher. For every serious gamer who suddenly became interested 10 casual gamers would balk at the price.
Of course, it won't be long before hackers figure out how to add new games to the system. Such mods already exist for the Atari VCs and Coleco retro systems which are also "locked" for content.
I hope this thing does well so that Nintendo will be motivated to create a Gameboy Color Classic with 30 preloaded GBC games.
Personally, I do not need another device connected to my TV so I skip on the console. However, I will be getting one of those controllers to use with my Wii virtual console games.
Of the 3DS games that are scheduled for this year DQ VII is the only one that I will get Day 1. I signed the petition to have it localized so now I will put my money where my mouth is.
I suspect that Pokémon Go will have a mild positive effect on sales for Sun and Moon. People who had stopped playing Pokémon may decide to come back now that there is so much world wide hype around the franchise. However, it will not be a huge gain.
I had a Saturn back in the day and loved it. However, I got tired of seeing all the best games going to PSX and N64 so I eventually sold it along with all of my games and bought an N64. I loved the N64 as well, but it was a huge mistake to get rid of my Saturn.
I emulate the Saturn now using SSF on my desktop PC. It is far from perfect as an emulator because it requires CDs (no loading from hard drive). However, it still allows me to get a blast of nostalgia from playing Sega Rally or Panzer Dragoon Zwei and to try out Japanese exclusive games.
As an aside, I cannot believe that Sega lost the source code to Panzer Dragoon Saga. What happened to configuration management on that one?
I regret that I did not pick up some of the early figures like Toon Link. If I wanted one now I would have to pay a stupid amount to some scalper. I would rather hold out hope for a reprint.
I believe the rumors that there will be two devices unveiled, NX and MH. NX will look like a successor to the Wii U and MH will look like a successor to the 3DS but they will both be running the same operating system and support the same games. Both will be backward compatible with their immediate predecessor.
How will the shared OS work? There will be one development suite for both devices. Most developers will create a game targeting both devices. They develop the NX version and then compile two different builds. On runs on the NX (available on disc or download) and one runs on the MH (available on cart or download). The MH version is the same game with a greatly reduced graphics resolution and usually a smaller file size. Since MH will not be pushing 1080P images it will not need as much CPU horse power. On MH the lower screen will provide the data that is displayed on the gamepad for the NX version.
The big difference for NX (over Wii U) will be that the tablet style gamepad will actually function as a tablet. It will run Android and can be taken with you out of the home to play on the bus or wherever. It will run apps, let you watch videos etc and even play some games that do not require the NX console to work. It will also allow you to play most NX games on the gamepad itself similar to the current Wii U.
The tablet controller will NOT be required to play games on the NX. The same second screen info that is displayed on the tablet controller could also be accessed by displaying it on the main screen when required. However, it will be required for Wii U backward compatibility.
In this model there would be three products available:
NX console with gamepad style controller $350
-Plays all NX games in 1080P but the experience is better if you have the tablet style controller as well
NX tablet controller/Android tablet $200
Acts as a stand alone tablet and plays many virtual console games and supports Android. Could be attractive to some people who do not even own an NX (possibly as tablet for a kid).
Buy the NX and tablet controller together for $500
MH handheld $300 at launch
Plays all NX games in lower resolution (much smaller screen). Fully backward compatible with 3DS and DS. Supports Android apps.
I would love to see a device that is essentially a handheld with a high quality screen, but can also plug into a docking station that allows the games to be played on an HD TV with proper controllers. All of the games and save data are on the portable device so there is no need to sync data between a console and a handheld. You just treat it as console when it is in the docking station and treat it as a handheld when it is out of the docking station.
I was surprised by how good Lost World was, however, I have no interest in Sonic Boom. Whether or not I get excited for this one will depend on whether it is a serious game in its own right or just a tie-in for the movie.
Physical copies of this game will be highly collectible some day (i.e. selling for ridiculous prices on EBay). It is a late-life, niche JRPG that appears to be pretty good on a system that was not very popular. I bet the print run is rather small as well.
With the NX I think that Apple and Android are the real competition, not Sony and Microsoft. It is the IPhone and IPad that have stolen Nintendo's market, not the PS4. Wii and DS both thrived on the casual gaming crowd. That crowd is now playing games on tablets and phones. Nintendo's strategy with NX will be to win back a significant portion of that crowd while also keeping their core fans happy.
I think that this game is going to polarize people and ultimately end up selling in underwhelming numbers on Wii U. However, I also expect that the entire Wii U line-up will be compatible with the NX so perhaps it will have a decent shot at making a profit over the long term.
Glad this is a launch title for NX as well as being the last hurrah for Wii U. On Wii U alone it would have reached only a small audience and it looks like a game that deserves to do very well.
If Nintendo has any major, unannounced, first party titles coming to 3DS this fall then I am very confused as to why they would think that E3 was not the right place to announce and showcase them. They will focus their attention on a Wii U game that is not coming out until March 2017 while staying completely silent on games that are launching months earlier than that? What the hell!
If Nintendo were planning to skip E3 altogether then I could understand not wanting to share all of their secrets right away. However, if they are paying big bucks for that much floor space then surely they can devote some of it to Pokemon Sun/Moon and whatever else is supposed to be bringing in the cash this fiscal year.

Re: Square Enix Confirms New Dragon Quest Monsters Title At Tokyo Game Show 2016
If this game is launching in February then it has been in development for a long time already. It has no bearing on whether or not NX is a handheld.
On a different note, if DQ VII is selling well (which it is) then hopefully SE will be open to bringing this one over.
Re: Guide: Getting Started In Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past
Just picked up my copy. The store had lots of copies so Nintendo must be expecting it to do well.

NX console with gamepad style controller $350
-Plays all NX games in 1080P but the experience is better if you have the tablet style controller as well
NX tablet controller/Android tablet $200
Buy the NX and tablet controller together for $500
MH handheld $300 at launch
That is my prediction
Re: Patent Reinforces the Prospect of Nintendo NX Having a Portable Handset
I would love to see a device that is essentially a handheld with a high quality screen, but can also plug into a docking station that allows the games to be played on an HD TV with proper controllers. All of the games and save data are on the portable device so there is no need to sync data between a console and a handheld. You just treat it as console when it is in the docking station and treat it as a handheld when it is out of the docking station.
Re: Sonic Team is Working on a New Sonic Game
I was surprised by how good Lost World was, however, I have no interest in Sonic Boom. Whether or not I get excited for this one will depend on whether it is a serious game in its own right or just a tie-in for the movie.
Re: Publisher Future Confirms £14.2 Million Takeover Bid For UK Rival Imagine
The takeover does not bother me so long as Retrogamer magazine is allowed to continue without any changes.
Re: Review: Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE (Wii U)
Physical copies of this game will be highly collectible some day (i.e. selling for ridiculous prices on EBay). It is a late-life, niche JRPG that appears to be pretty good on a system that was not very popular. I bet the print run is rather small as well.
Re: Editorial: Nintendo Did A Solid Job at E3 2016, But That Didn't Ease Long-Term Concerns
Re: E3 2016: Nintendo Reveals Ever Oasis for the 3DS
Action RPGs are my favorite genre so this one will be near the top of my list. Looks really good to me.
Re: E3 2016: Paper Mario: Color Splash Dated for 7th October
I think that this game is going to polarize people and ultimately end up selling in underwhelming numbers on Wii U. However, I also expect that the entire Wii U line-up will be compatible with the NX so perhaps it will have a decent shot at making a profit over the long term.
Re: Video: WayForward Issues a New Trailer for Shantae: Half-Genie Hero
This game was a long time coming, but it looks like it will be well worth the wait.
Re: E3 2016: Nintendo to Introduce a 'New Role-Playing IP' for 3DS At E3 Today
I am hoping for an action RPG. The 3DS already has LOTS of turn based RPGs.
Re: E3 2016: Full Title Of Wii U And NX Legend Of Zelda Revealed
Glad this is a launch title for NX as well as being the last hurrah for Wii U. On Wii U alone it would have reached only a small audience and it looks like a game that deserves to do very well.
Re: Nintendo Sure Has Booked A Lot Of Floor Space For E3 2016
