Re: Weirdness: Amazon UK Invites Switch Owners To Spend A Penny For Free Game Demos

PorllM

@HappyRusevDay Thanks for that, I hadn't heard about a lot of those things despite reading here for almost a decade. I will look into it for sure! You have to realise the fact you're still here makes all those criticisms feel pretty toothless though. And if "all they care about is money" is a valid criticism for a business, I bet you don't deal with 99% of companies.

Re: Weirdness: Amazon UK Invites Switch Owners To Spend A Penny For Free Game Demos

PorllM

@HappyRusevDay You're right, that is none of your business, and a really petty thing to bring up. Maybe these cheaper websites just don't have affiliate links? This is a small independent website trying to keep funded after all. Using affiliate links to get a bit of extra money from your traffic is standard practice for sites like this. To leave that money on the table just to provide links you're more happy with would be idiotic. There are sites out there like HUKD dedicated to finding games for the cheapest prices, this isn't one of them, nor would anyone logical expect them to spend time doing that.

Re: Rumour: Free-To-Play Switch Games Won't Be Impacted By Paid Online Service

PorllM

@Octane You have good points too and I'm not claiming to be an expert. I just strongly believe the internet is for everyone and the idea of certain organisations being prioritized repulses me a little. You're right that it didn't happen before, and that could still be the case, but remember the internet these days is very different, and more full of powerful giant corporations than ever before, so the possibility is certainly there. As software and systems get more complex and demanding, high speed connections are more an important thing for businesses than ever before. I guess all we can do is let the experts debate it out and hope the correct outcome comes along lol.

Re: Rumour: Free-To-Play Switch Games Won't Be Impacted By Paid Online Service

PorllM

@Octane From my understanding Net Neutrality stopped internet providers being able to prioritize different media providers. Now they can. This means Netflix can pay an ISP for higher priority access so that it loads faster than competitors do. That benefits both of them and only harms consumers for obvious reasons. Not to mention new internet startups will have no chance outbidding the big boys and as such, will never be able to stack up bandwith-wise.

Re: Rumour: Free-To-Play Switch Games Won't Be Impacted By Paid Online Service

PorllM

@Heavyarms55 Nah, this is the norm. Free to play games on PS4 don't require plus. While they do on Xbox, it's a major annoyance to Xbox gamers. So Nintendo have definitely gone the correct route here. I made a post on Resetera which was made in a slightly different context to this discussion but basically sums up my opinion on the matter:

"The entire business model of free to play games is to get as many players as possible to increase the potential sales of micro transactions. To lock these games behind the paywall would be dumb as hell, decreasing those players and micro transaction purchases and in turn reducing the amount of F2P game developers willing to launch on the system. The success (or not) of current switch F2P games like Fortnite and Paladins will directly influence what other F2P games come to the system (or not) in the future. To lock these games behind the paywall would be to hamstring this potential. Not to mention F2P/GaaS games are much more able to fund their own server costs and updates etc than a standard £40/$60 game.

Yes I know Xbox do it but future support is less an issue for them and I still think it’s dumb as hell."

@gcunit

They don't need to do anything lol. Millions will sign up as is and if you personally do or not is inconsequential. But if online games keep coming out for the system and the retro selection increases, I wouldn't be surprised if you do one day even if you're against it now. £20 a year is pretty close to nothing after all.

Re: Square Enix Issues A Second Apology As Octopath Traveler Restock Sells Out In Three Hours

PorllM

@Katelyn1223 How on earth have you read my comment and taken that from it? Read what I said again and who I was responding to. It was extremely obvious that the part in the quote marks was my impression of Square Enix and not my opinion, as we were both making fun of them. I prefer physical copies myself, which was kinda also obvious. Sorry to be snarky but, annoys me when people come at me for a comment they clearly haven't read or thought about for more than half a second.

Re: Dishonored And Prey Developer Arkane Studios Seeking Developers With Knowledge Of Switch

PorllM

Could be a sequel to Prey or Dishonored like you said, or something new like you said, but you forgot to mention it could also be ports of Dishonored 2 or Prey. Seems less likely with those games being out a little while but with Bethesda doing late ports of Skyrim, Doom and Wolfenstein 2, and all of them supposedly being pretty successful, Dishonored 2 and Prey being the next ones wouldn't be particularly surprising.

@Zuljaras

Not in the slightest? This is in line with all precedent so far

Re: Review: Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus (Switch)

PorllM

@diwdiws It launched at £49.99 on PS4 and that's still the digital price on PSN, aswell as the RRP. It has dropped in price to around £20 on physical copy in some stores as all (non Smash hit, non Nintendo first party) games do after a while, and as the Switch version will too. That's stores trying to sell off stock and isn't the official price so is irrelevant. There is not a price difference whatsoever.

Re: Review: Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus (Switch)

PorllM

@gcunit It's a review bro. The gyro and the graphical downgrade are the only difference so to not make a big deal of them would be idiocy. In fact it's the only thing that matters because every other part of the game has been covered in hundreds of reviews months ago. Outside of reviews its not mentioned everywhere at all so it's hardly over-emphasized.

Re: Splatoon 2 Producer Discusses The Potential Impact Of Paid Nintendo Switch Online Service

PorllM

@Jeronan "On both PS4 and XBOne you have to pay for online multiplayer. No exceptions!"

Not the case at all. There is lots of exceptions. On PS4 you don't need to subscribe to play any Free to Play games. Dreadnought, Fortnite, War Thunder, Warframe, and many more are all playable without subscribing. Xbox does the same for several Free to Play games too, although not for Fortnite for whatever reason.

Re: Digital Foundry Takes Issue With Hyrule Warriors' Portable Performance On Switch

PorllM

@Alikan Well you said "on my TV" and this article is clearly about the handheld version so that explains that. Also Digital Foundry are just commenting with their technical knowledge, don't shoot the messenger. Below 30FPS for this game in handheld mode is absolutely pathetic, let's be real. You're saying "not every game needs to be solid 60fps", already a dubious claim when you're talking about action games with simple graphics and a focus on combat, but this game isn't even managing half that.

Re: Digital Foundry Takes Issue With Hyrule Warriors' Portable Performance On Switch

PorllM

Really want this game and this issue has been putting me off to the point I probably won't get it which is pretty disappointing. Anyone with a lot of experience in both docked and undocked that can say how playable it is? I'd mostly play docked anyway but I just can't handle these half-assed ports. Hope a patch will put the handheld mode down to 720p but this should have been common sense from the start.

Re: UK Schools Want To Bring The Cardboard Creativity Of Nintendo Labo Into The Classroom

PorllM

@Heavyarms55 I have to disagree with some of this, I appreciate you're a teacher and your opinion is worth a lot more than mine but still:

1." you'd need custom Nintendo Switch units that are loaded only with the educational software you want to use - or kids would just play whatever games they wanted on them."

This is not really an issue - Nintendo have been creating custom N64s, Gamecubes and Wiis for children's hospitals since forever. If they are serious about getting Labo into schools then an educational version of the Switch is a given.

"2. You'd need enough units for at least a single full size class, that is at least 35 units. Plus all the Labo kits. Even assuming Nintendo cuts a deal for all this equipment and materials, we're still talking a LOT of money on something with a very limited practical/school relevant - application."

Absolutely no reason they would need one switch or one kit each. Building and playing together is one of the main aims of this. One per table or group would more than cover it. I'm thinking like 4 to 8 per class. Hell we never had one each of ANYTHING for my entire school life, so I doubt any of the students would expect it either.

"3. It's cardboard, and these are kids. It will be destroyed quickly. And what isn't destroyed will be covered in penis drawings and profanity. Even among high school students only the most disciplined classes will see the majority of the materials not destroyed."

The other thing about cardboard is that it can be fixed for nothing in 2 seconds with a piece of tape. And I assume if Nintendo were doing school specific packages they would offer a lot more spare parts than the regular store-bought SKU. Of course this depends on Nintendo doing a school aimed package but like I said in point 1, that wouldn't be anything new.

"4. The joy-cons and even the Switches themselves are small, valuable items. They will be stolen. My coworkers and I have a rule - don't distribute any materials that you absolutely need to get back. Some will be lost, destroyed, or stolen. No question. You will not get all your materials back. At least most of the time(there is always the lucky days with uncommonly well behaved classes but don't bet on it)"

I do agree with this lol completely but it's not enough reason to not do it.

Re: Nintendo May Be Facing Heat From The FTC Over Its Warranty Policy

PorllM

To be fair they do replace consoles that have been used with third party products, as long as it's not brazen i.e. sending the console to them with the third party hardware still attached. I think this statement is just to cover them in the cases where the third party hardware is the cause of the damage. That's completely fair since there is nothing they could do to prevent it in that case. I agree the way it's worded comes across wrong to the consumer though.

Re: Director Josef Fares Reveals A Way Out Could Make It To Switch One Day

PorllM

Hold up now. A Nintendo Switch comes with two Joy cons built in, so one player can use that (either split or in the grip) and they have two sticks. A PS4 comes with one controller, which has two sticks. To play local two player on Switch you'd need to buy a Pro Controller for player 2, to play local two player on PS4 you'd need to buy a Dualshock 4 for player 2. Identical situation, idiotic excuse.

Re: Review: Subsurface Circular (Switch eShop)

PorllM

@SmaggTheSmug You have a point and it's one that's hard to respond to without spoilers. But it's not as bad as you think, the game doesn't render a judgement either way as far I can tell. Although I have only played through once so I don't know what happens if you take the opposite standpoint to the one I did.

Re: Review: Subsurface Circular (Switch eShop)

PorllM

@fluggy Detention is getting high scores everywhere, not just on Nintendolife, is it possible your opinion can just differ sometimes? If you keep this in mind, and use reviews as pointers instead of the bible, it's impossible to get burned

Re: Review: Subsurface Circular (Switch eShop)

PorllM

Haha, completed this over the weekend in one sitting. As soon as I saw you'd posted the review, I thought "if this is below an 8 I will be pretty disappointed." So glad you guys enjoyed it as much as I did! To any on the fence, it's more of a short interactive story than a game. This makes it not very replayable, and if you're expecting gameplay you will be pretty disappointed. But the story is so damn good, and the price is so damn low, that it still gets a 10 from me. Utterly thrilling experience. My flatmate couldn't get a word out of me from when I started the game to when I finished it.

As a "video game" it's probably an 8, but as the piece of interactive storytelling it actually is, it's flawless.

@ThanosReXXX and @Tate24 I know you're probably joking but that isn't how score ratings work.

Re: Shock Horror! Outlast: Bundle Of Terror Is Out Now On The eShop

PorllM

@OorWullie Lol those games all reviewed pretty well but none of them are remotely close to being one of the scariest games of all time. Outlast I could maybe give you but even that would be a stretch, but Detention and Layers of Fear are not even in the top 50 realistically. Have you heard of the Amnesia series? Silent Hill? Alien Isolation? Hell, even PT blows them out the water though it's debatable if that counts.

Re: Review: Toki Tori 2+ (Switch eShop)

PorllM

@SLIGEACH_EIRE It's lovely to see you being positive on here, especially about a Wii U port . And I have to agree fully, this is a 10/10 game for me and instant recommendation for anyone that enjoys puzzle gameplay in any form.

Re: Black Panther Director Is A Big Fan Of Nintendo Switch

PorllM

@LUIGITORNADO The thing about mixing the nationality you grew up with and the one your ancestors had is a very american thing. E.g. Vietnamese American, African American etc. It doesn't really happen elsewhere. Most people of African heritage in Britain would just call themselves British if they grew up here. Or the nation in Africa they're from if they didn't. Or if you're talking specifically about black people you could just say black people. You could also just say "African British" if you want, everyone would understand what you mean. But that isn't said commonly.
